According to the recently revised seismic design standards, seismic design of underground structures is required. Concrete underground outer walls are installed separately from temporary earth retaining walls as permanent underground outer walls. This raises issues of constructability, economy, and space narrowness. Therefore, a steel underground continuous wall is developed to promote construction efficiency, safety, and economy by introducing the off-site construction (OSC) method of underground structures. The steel underground continuous wall will be used as a permanent underground continuous wall along with the temporary earth retaining wall. To this end, it must satisfy structural performance equivalent to or higher than the concrete underground outer wall. The integrity and in-plane shear resistance performance between single panel members must be satisfied to be used as a permanent wall. The interlocking effect through geometric bonding is intended to enhance the bonding effect between these members. Therefore, trapezoidal members were developed, and bending performance tests and analyses of each member were performed to confirm the structural bending performance of these members. The bending performance improvement effect of the combined multiple members was confirmed. As a result, it was confirmed that the integration of members and structural performance was improved due to the interlocking effect of the absence of joints. The seismic design analysis of the demonstration site was performed with these developed members, and it was confirmed that the structural performance was equivalent to or higher than that of the existing RC underground continuous wall. As a result, it was confirmed that the steel underground continuous wall can be used as a permanent underground wall together with the temporary earth retaining wall.
In this study, the performance evaluation of steel dampers was conducted based on existing research results. The test variables are cross-sectional shape and lateral deformation prevention details. As a result of performance tests according to cross-sectional shape, the circular cross-section was evaluated to be superior than the rectangular cross-section in terms of envelope, stiffness reduction, and energy dissipation capacity. In addition, it was evaluated that the rectangular cross-section where lateral deformation occurs can be restrained by lateral deformation prevention details, thereby improving strength and deformation capacity.
The purpose of this study is to experimentally analyze the seismic performance of beam-column specimens with vertical irregular, which were reinforced with RHS (Replaceable steel haunch system). a steel haunch system. To evaluate the seismic performance of the RHS, three specimens were manufactured and subjected to cycle loading tests. Retrofitted specimens have different beam-upper column stiffness ratio as a variable. The stiffness ratio of beam-upper column were considered to be 1.2 and 0.84. As a result of the test, the specimen reinforced with RHS showed improved maximum load and effective stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity compared to the non-retrofitted specimen with same beam-upper column stiffness ratio. The specimen with 0.84 beam-upper column stiffness ratio showed improved performance than the specimen with 12.
This study aims to assess the seismic performance of retrofitted reinforced concrete columns using a Replaceable Steel Brace (RSB) system, subjected to combined axial, lateral, and torsional loadings. Through experimental testing, one non-retrofitted concrete column specimen and two retrofitted specimens with variable sliding slot lengths were subjected to eccentric lateral loads to simulate realistic seismic loading. The retrofitted specimens with RSBs exhibited enhanced resistance against shear cracking, effective torsional resistance, and demonstrated the feasibility of easy replacement. The RSB system substantially improved seismic performance, achieving approximately 1.7 times higher load capacity and 3.5 times greater energy dissipation compared to non-retrofitted column, thus validating its efficacy under combined loading conditions.
The purpose of this study is to experimentally analyze the seismic performance of column with RSB (Replaceable Steel Brace), a steel brace system with slot length as a variable. To evaluate the seismic performance of the RSB, three specimens were manufactured and subjected to cyclic loading tests. The length of the sliding slots were considered to be 5 mm and 10mm to enable the brace to resist the load from the initiation of flexural crack and shear crack. As a result of the test, the specimen reinforced with the RSB showed improved maximun load and effective stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity compared to the non-reinforced specimens. The specimens with 5mm sliding slot showed little difference in test result compared to the specimen with a 10mm sliding slot, indicating that the length of sliding slot has little influence on the effectiveness of RSB.
The demand for high-strength steel is rising due to its economic efficiency. Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests have been conducted to investigate the nonlinear behaviors of high-strength steel. Accurate material models must be used to obtain reliable results on seismic performance evaluation using numerical analyses. This study uses the combined hardening model to simulate the LCF behavior of high-strength steel. However, it is challenging and complex to determine material model parameters for specific high-strength steel because a highly nonlinear equation is used in the model, and several parameters need to be resolved. This study used the particle swarm algorithm (PSO) to determine the model parameters based on the LCF test data of HSA 650 steel. It is shown that the model with parameter values selected from the PSO accurately simulates the measured LCF curves.
This study aims to evaluate the structural safety of a structural thermal barrier, installed inside the structure of a building and performed the role of a load-bearing element and an insulation simultaneously, contributing to the realization of net-zero buildings. To ensure the reliability of the analysis model, the analysis results derived from LS-DYNA were compared with the experimental results. Based on the results shown through the flexural experiment, the reliability of the thermal cross-section insulation structure model for slabs was validated. In addition, the effect of the UHPC block on the load support performance and its contribution to vertical deflection was verified.

This study aimed to address the limitations of traditional plasma nitriding methods by implementing a short-term plasma oxy-nitriding treatment on the surface of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. This treatment involved the sequential formation of nitride and oxide layers, to enhance surface hardness and corrosion resistance, respectively. The process resulted in the formation of a 20 μm-thick nitride layer and a 3 μm-thick oxide layer on the steel surface. Initially, the hardness increased by 2.2 times after nitriding, followed by a subsequent decrease of approximately 31 % after oxidation. While the nitriding process reduced corrosion resistance, the subsequent oxidation process led to the formation of a passive oxide film, effectively resolving this issue. The pitting corrosion of the oxide passive film started at 82.6 mVssc, providing better corrosion resistance characteristics than the nitride layer. Consequently, the trade-off between surface hardness and corrosion resistance in plasma oxy-nitrided AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel is anticipated to be recognized as an innovative and comprehensive surface treatment process for biomedical components.
In this study, the performance evaluation of the RC frame specimen (RV2) which was strengthened by a steel frame and a steel damper with the lateral deformation prevention details proceeded. The comparison objects are bare frame specimen (BF), RV2 and AWD, where AWD is a specimen reinforced with steel damper and aramid fiber sheets. In the evaluation of envelope curve, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation capacity, RV2 was evaluated to have excellent capacity as a whole. To evaluate the strengthening effect of the steel frame based on the maximum strength and energy dissipation capacity, it was evaluated to have a 38% of the RV2’s capacity.
This study proposes an RCS composite damping device that can achieve seismic reinforcement of existing buildings by dissipating energy by inelastic deformation. A series of experiments assessing the performances of the rubber core pad, hysteretic steel slit damping device, and hybrid RCS damping device were conducted. The results showed that the ratios of the deviations to the mean values satisfied the domestic damping-device conformity condition for the load at maximum device displacement in each direction, at the maximum force and minimum force at zero displacement, as well as the hysteresis curve area. In addition, three analysis models based on load-displacement characteristics were proposed for application to seismic reinforcement design. In addition, the validity of the three proposed models was confirmed, as they simulated the experimental results well. Meanwhile, as the shear deformation of the rubber-core pad increased, the hysteretic behavior of super-elasticity greatly increased the horizontal force of the damping device. Therefore, limiting the allowable displacement during design is deemed to be necessary.
In SRC column, the closed hoops are applied with the same detail of both 135° standard hooks to expect the same performance as hoops of RC columns. This standard detail is actually complicated to construct, thus, two separating rebars are connected in the form of a square shape and welded over the overlapping section. But this is also complicated in construction practice. Therefore, this study describes experimental results regarding cyclic behaviors shown with alternative hoops cramped by the steel clip type-binding device instead of welding and standard specimen. As a result of the experiment, the specimens with alternative hoops of the SRC column showed comparable performance to the specimens with closed hoops. Therefore, it can be evaluated that the alternative hoops applied with the rebar confinement clips in the SRC column can replace the closed hoop.
In this study, an incremental loading test of the HRS(Hybrid Rubber Slit) damper was additionally performed to define the physical characteristics according to the incremental test results, and an analytical study was performed according to the damping design procedure by selecting an example structure. As a result of performing seismic performance evaluation before reinforcement by selecting a RC structure similar to an actual school structure as an example structure, the story drift ratio was satisfied, but some column members collapsed due to bending deformation. In order to secure the seismic performance, the damping design procedure of the HRS damper was presented and performed. As a result of calculating the amount of damping device according to the expected damping ratio and applying it to the example structure, the hysteresis behavior was stable without decrease in strength, and the story drift ratio and the shear force were reduced according to the damping effect. Finally the column members that had collapsed before reinforcement satisfied the LS Level.
It is effective to apply hybrid damping device that combine separate damping device to cope with various seismic load. In this study, HRS hybrid damper(hybrid rubber slit damper) in which high damping rubber and steel slit plate are combined in parallel was proposed and structural performance tests were performed to review the suitability for seismic performance. Cyclic Loading tests were performed in accordance with criteria presented in KDS 41 17 00 and MOE 2019. As a result of the test, the criteria of KDS 41 17 00 and MOE2019 was satisfied, and the amount of energy dissipation increased due to the shear deformation of the high-damping rubber at low displacement. Result of performing the RC frame test, the allowable story drift ratio was satisfied, and the amount of energy dissipation increased in the reinforced specimen compared to the non-reinforced specimen.
