        Antibacterial behaviors of PAN-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) containing silver metal were investigated. The effects of surface and pore structures of the ACFs were studied by N2/77 K adsorption and D-R plot as a function of silver loading content. The antibacterial activities were investigated by a dilution test against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus; gram positive) and Klebsiella pnemoniae (K. pnumoniae; gram negative). As experimental results, the ACFs showed some decreases in specific surface areas, micropore volumes, and total pore volume with an increase of silver content. However, the antibacterial activities of the ACFs were strongly increased against S. aureus as well as K. pnumoniae, which could be attributed to the presence of antibacterial metal in the ACFs system.

        Agar, one of the most abundant marine products has not been utilized extensively because of low level of processing technology in Korea. This research was carried out to improve the utilization of agar and consequent increase in profit. Antibacterial activity of agarooligosaccharides were evaluated against bacteria causing putrefaction and food poisoning. Addition of 0.4% agarooligosaccharides showed antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli O157:H7; furthermore, autoclave treatment of agarooligosaccharides solution enhanced the antibacterial activity. Agarooligosaccharides showed high stability against the pH change. Addition of amino acid(alanine, lysine, glycine, phenylalanine) in agarooligosaccharides solution enhanced antibacterial activity in E. coli O157:H7, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus.

        Drug delivery system(DDS) have been actively studied for the past twenty years. Dual action agents are unique chemical entities comprised of two different types of antibacterial compounds covalently linked together in a single molecule in such a way that both components are able to exert their bactericidal properties. In spite of the advent of the antibacterial agent the sulfa agents are the most widely used antibacterial agent today. In this study, new antibacterials derivative was synthesized using glutaraldehyde such as crosslinking agent for the purpose of dual-action as DDS study. Antibacterial activity of these new synthetic derivative between their structures and activities were examined by disc diffusion method. As a result, new synthetic derivative exhibited the broad antibacterial activities against Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacilli. Especially, the antibacterial effect of new synthetic derivative against Gram negative(Esherichia. coli) was much stronger than that against Gram positive.

        Bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria have attracted much attention in recent years because of their useful worth in increasing safety and extending shelf life of foods. These substances show an inhibitory effect against some food spoilage bacteria and food-borne pathogens. The inhibitory effect of the bacteriocin produced by lactic acid bacteria against Listeria monocytogenes(L. monocytogenes) was examined in this study. The culture supernatants of 5 kinds of bacteria among the 10 kinds of tested lactic acid bacteria had the inhibitory activity against Listeria sp., various Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Bacteriocin produced by Lactobacillus plantarum(Lact. plantarum) LMG 7945 was the most active toward L. monocytogenes. Bacteriocin production of the Lact, plantarum LMG 7945 cultured on MRS broth was increased late logarithmic phase over early stationary phase. This bacteriocin was stable at heat treatment and acidic pH relatively; The activity was retained after heating at 121 for 15min and was active in the pH range of 2-4 but was lost above pH 5.

        1. L. acidophilus 성장(成長)을 본 결과 접종후 12시간에 가장 높은 생균수(生菌數)를 측정(測定)하였다. 2. 우유배지(牛乳培地)에서 성장(成長)한 L. acidophilus와 Tomato Juice의 것과 비교할 때 Tomato Juice에서 성장(成長)한 균(菌)이 굵게 보였다. 3. 항생효과(抗生效果)의 분석(分析)은 (1) Well 방법(方法)에서 Acidophilus Tomato Juice의 Acidophilus milk 보다 더 강(强)한 항생대(抗生帶)를 보였다. (2) 디스크 방법(方法)에서 Shigella dysenteriae 병원균(病原菌)에 대하여 가장 강한 항생대(抗生帶)를 보였으며 그외 다른 병원성(病源性)에 대하여서도 모두 항생작용(抗生作用)을 보였다. 4. Sephadex G-50 Gel여과 크로마토그라피의 제 5번째 분류(分溜)가 항생효과(抗生效果)를 가장 크게 나타냈다. 5. UV 흡광 스펙트라에서 약 270nm에서 최고 피크를 보였다.

        Background : Panos extract is a mixture of four Panax plant extracts namely Dendropanax morbifera, Panax ginseng, Acanthopanax senticosus and Kalopanax septemlobus. We intended to use Panos extract for ZnO nanoparticles(NPs) synthesis and application for waste water treatment. Methods and Results : In the present study, we have synthesized Panos ZnO nanoparticles via co precipitation method. Characterization of the NPs has been done using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-Visible spectroscopy. An average of 75% efficacy in degrading the methylene blue dye has been observed. The nanoparticles showed antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Conclusion : The results shows that Panos ZnO NPs can be a potential eco-friendly and economical tool for waste water management in the current scenario where there an intense urge to remediate the polluted environment through novel approaches such as Nanobiotechnology.

        본 연구에서는 다양한 식품유해미생물에 대한 길항작용 및 항산화활성이 우수한 B. subtilis SRCM102046 균주를 식품보존 소재로서 이용하기 위해 반응표면분석법을 이용하여 균체 증량을 통한 항균활성 및 항산화활성 증대를 도모하고자 하였다. SRCM102046의 산업적 활용을 위한 성장조건을 최적화하기 위해 배양시간에 따른 균체 성장을 조사하였으며, 통계학적 기법인 반응표면분석법을 사용하였다. SRCM102046의 최적 성장을 위한 배지 성분을 선별하기 위해 Plackett-Burman design을 이용하였으며, PBD 결과 선별된 배지 성분으로 molasses, sucrose, peptone으로 예측되었다. 각 배지 성분의 최적농도를 결정하기 위한 방법으로 central composite design을 이용하였으며, 최종적으로 예측된 각 배지 성분의 농도는 molasses 7 g/L, sucrose 7 g/L, peptone 2 g/L로 예측되었다. 이때의 균체량은 22.03±1.30 g/L로 예측되었으며, 통계분석을 통해 실험모델의 적합성을 확인하였다. 또한, 실험 모델을 수행하여 건조균체량을 측정한 결과 22.02±0.35 g/L로 측정되어 실험모델에 의해 예측된 값이 오차범위 내에 존재하여 모델의 신뢰성이 매우 높음을 확인하였으며, 이는 실험모델에 의해 예측된 최적배지 사용시 최적화 이전의 LB 배지에서의 균체량(2.47±0.03 g/L)대비 약 9배의 균체량이 증가함을 확인하였다. 또한 최적배지에서 B. subtilis SRCM102046 배양 시 항균활성은 대조구로 사용된 LB 배지에서의 항균활성 대비 최대 140% 향상되었으며, 항산화활성은 약 100.41% 증가함을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 식품보존제로서B. subtilis SRCM102046의 산업화를 위한 배지최적화를 수행하였으며, 추후 박테리오신의 정제 및 특성 등에 대한 세부적인 연구가 필요하지만 본 연구를 통해 확립된 배양조건을 기반으로 식품보존 소재의 측면에서 매우 유용한 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

        본 연구에서는 화장품에 널리 쓰이는 컨디셔닝제이면서 항균력을 가지는 성분들인 1,2-hexanediol, ethylhexylglycerin, glyceryl caprylate를 대상으로, 이들이 화장품 제형 내에서 다양한 제형 원료와 혼합될 때 그람 양성, 음성 세균에 대한 항균력이 어떻게 변화하는지 확인하고자 하였다. 검토할 제형 원료로는 제형 내에서 항균력을 향상시킬 것으로 예상되는 물질 7종(1,3-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, glycerin, dipropylene glycol, niacinamide, EDTA-2Na, ethanol)을 선정하였으며, checkerboard assay를 이용하여 해당 물질들과 항균력을 지닌 3종 물질에 대한 항균 시너지 효과를 확인하였다. 시험 결과, 세균에 대해 눈에 띄는 항균 시너지 효과를 보인 물질은 ethanol과 EDTA-2Na였으며 특히 ethanol은 항균력을 지닌 컨디셔닝제 3종 모두와 세균에 대해 항균 시너지 효과를 나타냄을 확인할 수 있었다. Glyceryl caprylate는 시험한 물질 7종 모두와 그람 양성균인 S. aureus에 대해 항균 부가 및 상승 효과를 나타내었으며, 4종의 폴리올이 첨가된 제형에는 1,2-hexanediol, glyceryl caprylate 조합으로 방부처방을 하는 것이 그람 양성, 음성 세균을 모두 제어하기에 용이하다고 판단되었다. 본 연구는 화장품에서 자주 이용되는 항균력을 지닌 컨디셔닝제와 주요 제형 원료의 항균 시너지 효과를 확인함으로써 항균력을 지닌 컨디셔닝제의 제형 내 항균력을 예측하는 데 기여했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

        Background: The objective of this study were to determine the antibacterial activity and antibiotic activity-enhancing effect of 70% ethanol extract of the root of Rumex japonicus Houtt. and its fractions when used in combination with gentamicin against aerobic skin flora. Methods and Results: The antibacterial activity and antibiotic (gentamicin) activity enhancing effect against aerobic skin flora were determined using the disc diffusion assay. Chloroform fraction (CF) and ethyl acetate fraction (EF) showed higher activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis than those shown by other fractions. Regarding the antibiotic (gentamicin) activity-enhancing effect against aerobic skin flora, the n-hexane fraction (HF) and CF showed strong activity. The combination of HF and CF with gentamicin was evaluated using the broth dilution assay to determine the inhibitory effect on the growth of aerobic skin flora. The combination of CF with gentamicin exhibited the highest inhibitory effect on the growth of S. aureus and S. epdermidis. MTT assay performed to determine the viability of L929 cells revealed that EF treatment resulted in viability of 33.96 - 116.76% at the tested concentration. The combination of 70% ethanol extract and its other fractions with gentamicin showed low cell toxicity. Conclusions: Appropriate use of antimicrobial agents is important prior to the development of new antibiotics. The 70% ethanol extract of the root of R. japonicus Houtt. and its fractions showed significant synergism with gentamicin when used in combination against S. aureus and S. epdermidis. Thus, R. japonicus Houtt. could be used as a functional materials in antimicrobial-related fields.

        Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a serious clinical and an urgent problem worldwide. Few new drugs are available against MRSA, because MRSA has the ability to acquire resistance to most antibiotics, which consequently increases the cost of medication. In the present study, the antibacterial activity of Hydnocarpi Semen was investigated. The most effective method is to develop antibiotics from the natural products without having any toxic or side effects. Therefore, there is a need to develop alternative antibacterial drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases. Five Clinical isolates (MRSA) were obtained from five different patients at Wonkwang University Hospital (Iksan, South Korea). The Other 2 strains were ATCC 33591 (Methicillin-resistant strain) and ATCC 25923 (Methicillin-susceptible strain). Antibacterial activity (Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations, MICs) was determined by broth dilution method, disk diffusion method, MTT test, and checkerboard dilution test. Antibacterial activity of n-hexane fraction was remarkable, and had a MICs ranging from 31.25-125 ㎍/㎖. FICI values for HFH+AM and HFH+OX were 0.13-0.19 and 0.04-0.29, showing the increase of synergistic effect. When combined together, these antibacterial effects were dramatically increased.

        This study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial activities and sensory properties of a sauce containing tea extract and garlic vineger against raw fish. The sauce was evaluated antibacterial activity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus which is considered as one of the major food borne pathogens. As a result, the sauce inhibited the growth of V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus distinctly. In addition, the sauce with soy sauce and Kochujang showed the restricted growth of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus in sliced raw flatfish. Sensory evaluations were measured by 7-point hedonic scale using sliced raw flatfish with the sauce mixed with Kochujang and soy sauce. The score of texture in the sauce with Kochujang was significantly higher than that of regular Chokochujang (p<0.05). Moreover, total preference including appearance, texture, aroma and taste were significantly higher in the sauce with soy sauce than those of regular soy sauce (p<0.05). Consequently, the soy sauce with tea extract and garlic vinegar may enhance the satisfaction of consumer and antimicrobial activity that against V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus, resulting in potential reduction the outbreaks of food borne pathogens.

        This study was carried out to get basic resources for the industrial use of Lactobacillus bulgaricus SP5. The antibacterial activity of the supernatant obtained from Lactobacillus bulgaricus SP5 was tested against the pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli KCCM 11234, Salmonella enteritidis KCCM 3313, Salmonella enteritidis KCCM 12021, and Salmonella typhimurium KCCM 40253. The supernatant of L. bulgaricus SP5 showed antibacterial activity against tested pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial activity was examined after adjusting pH and heat treatment of supernatant. Heat treatment of supernatant had antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria at all temperature. However, pH changes showed no antibacterial activity. Antibacterial activity of the supernatant was confirmed to be due to organic acids (lactic, acetic, phosphoric, succinic, pyroglutamic, citric, malic, and formic acid).

        The antimicrobial effects of ten isothiocyanates (ITCs) present in cruciferous vegetables and radish root hydrolysate were investigated against pathogenic bacteria from olive flounder. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were measured against two gram-positive bacterial strains (Streptococcus parauberis, S. iniae) and four gram-negative bacterial strains (Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio ichthyoenteri, V. harveyi, Photobacterium damselae) by using a broth microdilution technique. The antibacterial activity of ITCs was in the order sulforaphane > sulforaphene > phenylethyl ITC > erucin > benzyl ITC > iberin > I3C > allyl ITC > phenyl ITC > hexyl ITC. The susceptibility of fish pathogens to ITCs was in the order of V. harveyi > E. tarda > P. damselae > S. parauberis > S. iniae > V. ichthyoenteri. Antimicrobial activity (MIC) of radish root hydrolysate was 0.250 mg/mL against S. iniae, 0.438 mg/mL against S. parauberis, and 0.500 mg/mL against both E. tarda and V. harveyi. The aliphatic ITCs were potent inhibitors of the growth of fish pathogens, followed by aromatic ITCs and indolyl ITC. The presence of a double bond in the chemical structure of ITCs decreased antibacterial activity, while ITCs with a thiol (-S-) group and a longer carbon chain increased antibacterial activity. These results suggest that ITCs have strong antibacterial activities and may be useful in the prevention of fish pathogens.

        The purpose of this study is to develop eco-friendly finishing materials of acrylic emulsion-modified mortars using lightweight aggregate carrier which contains pyroligneous liquid. Four types of light-weight aggregate carriers such as perlite, vermiculite, charcoal and zeolite are selected. The acrylic emulsion-modified mortars are prepared with light-weight carrier replacements to dolomite of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20%, and tested for flowability, adhesion in tension, water absorption coefficient and antibiosis. As a result, the flowability of acrylic emulsion-modified mortars using zeolite light-weight is improved with increasing light-weight carrier content. The adhesion in tension of acrylic emulsion-modified mortars using lightweight carrier is satisfied with KS requirement. Especially, the adhesion in tension of acrylic emulsion-modified mortars using light-weight aggregate carrier at a high temperature of 40oC are better than the low temperatures of 0oC and 20oC. The water absorption coefficient of acrylic emulsion-modified mortars using light-weight aggregate carriers is increased with increasing light-weight carrier content. However, the water absorption coefficient is satisfied with KS requirement. The antibiosis of acrylic emulsion-modified mortars using zeolite light-weight carrier is remarkably improved with increasing light-weight carrier content.

        This study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial activity of lactic acid bacteria isolated from traditional fermented foods and to develop a new starter for fermented milk. The isolates were identified using 16S rDNA sequencing and named Lactobacillus plantarum A, Leuconostoc lactis B and L. acidophilus C. The activity of these strains to inhibit the growth of food-borne human pathogens (Escherichia coli NCTC 12923, Salmonella Typhimurium NCTC 12023, Listeria monocytogenes NCTC 11994) was measured using the paper disc method. All these strains showed strong antibacterial activity against Li. monocytogenes NCTC 11994. The experiment groups were the fermented milks with these strains, and the control group was the fermented milk with the commercial starter (ABT 5). The change of pH, acidity and viable cell counts were measured during their aging time. All the experiment groups showed a significant difference in their aging times compared to the control group. However, the sensory test showed that the experiment groups can be used as useful starters for fermented milk. This result suggests that L. plantarum A, Leu. lactis B and L. acidophilus C have the potential to be developed as new starters for fermented milk.
