This study investigated speaking anxiety among advanced Korean language learners in Korean Language Institution classrooms, and the strategies they used to overcome it. The study employed qualitative methodology using online interviews for data collection. The sampling technique involved purposive sampling by selecting 13 Korean learners who had completed an advanced Korean course at TOPIK Levels 5 or 6, with Level 6 being the highest. The interview questions addressed various aspects, including comparisons of speaking skills, anxiety in Korean classrooms, fear of making mistakes, concerns about classmates’ reactions, and anxiety induced by teachers. Thematic analysis was performed by generating initial codes, grouping related codes to uncover potential themes, and highlighting recurring patterns in the participants’ responses. The results revealed three factors that contribute to speaking anxiety: personal reasons, teachers’ classroom approaches, and teaching methods. Advanced learners manage anxiety through three coping strategies: preparation, positive thinking, and seeking support from peers. The study concludes with discussions on the pedagogical implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research in advanced Korean language learning classrooms.

This study explores the development of professionalism in using Educational Technology (EdTech) among Korean elementary English teachers amid the increasing integration of technology in English education. Employing the Grounded Theory methodology, the study involved in-depth interviews with nine Korean elementary English teachers experienced in using EdTech. It aims to identify their EdTech experiences, the elements constituting EdTech professionalism, and its developmental process. The study reveals that teachers’ EdTech professionalism encompasses a proactive approach towards technology, continuous professional growth based on practice and reflection, and adaptation of teaching methods in response to evolving technologies and learner needs. It highlights the importance of teachers’ self-directed approach, collaboration with other teachers, and the integration of pedagogical, content, and technological knowledge into their English teaching. The findings have implications for teacher education and the advancement of EdTech-utilized English education, suggesting new processes and directions for developing elementary English teachers’ professionalism in the rapidly evolving landscape of educational technology.

The present study aimed to analyze the developmental trajectories of English achievement and exposure time through private education, utilizing univariate and multivariate latent growth curve analysis. This study used a subset of the Gyeonggi Education Panel Study data from 2012 to 2017. The results indicated consistent disparities in the growth of English achievement, depending on the student’s proficiency levels at the starting point. In particular, the early exposure to private tutoring was significantly and closely related to the initial status and the growth trajectory of English achievement. When the sample was classified by urbanicity, the findings suggested that the gap in English achievement was likely to increase over time across the two regions, with a stronger correlation with private tutoring found in urban areas. These results underscore the need for educational intervention for students in less advantageous conditions, and they provide valuable pedagogical implications for teaching English in the Korean EFL context.

Lee, En Hye, & Lee, Chee Hye. (2024). “Phonological Aspects of American and British Englishes Embedded in Korean English: A Perspective of Linguistic Realities”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 32(1), 43-74. This paper explores the rationale behind the shift from Quirk’s deficit linguistics to Kachru’s liberation linguistics in English widely used in Korea. Despite the Korean government’s efforts to enhance communicative competence aligned with Inner Circle-oriented American Standard English, the study questions the perception of Korean English being solely dominated by American English from sociolinguistic perspectives. To delve into both psychological and empirical perspectives on English in Korea, a questionnaire survey involving 100 Korean college students is employed. The focus is on assessing the extent of influence from both American English and British English on Korean English. Additionally, the study examines how linguistic realities, disregarding sociolinguistic or functional aspects, contribute to the current state of Korean English. The analysis of survey data reveals that Korean linguistics, especially phonology, plays a role in shaping the dynamics of Korean English, supporting Kachru’s liberation linguistics. This contributes to the shift from the stage of aspiring to be more native-like American English to the stage of World Englishes, establishing itself as a variant of English in its own right.

개나무좀과 (Bostrichidae)에 속하는 Lyctoxylon dentatum (Pascoe, 1866)(가슴각진개나무좀; 신칭), Melalgus batillus (Lesne, 1902)(큰머 리개나무좀; 신칭)을 채집하여 한반도에서 처음으로 보고한다. 본 연구는 이들에 대한 간단한 진단형질과 종 정보 및 사진자료를 제공하고자 한다.

본 연구의 목적은 광주지역에 거주하는 북한이탈주민의 지역사회적응 과정에서의 어려움과 평생교육 경험에 대해 살펴보는데 있다. 연구 대상 자는 6년 이상 광주지역에 거주하고 있는 북한이탈주민 10명이었다. 본 연구는 심층면담을 통한 질적 연구방법을 실시했다. 주요한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 북한이탈주민들은 언어적 문화적 차이에서 오는 어려 움을 겪었지만 평생교육 현장에서 만난 동기, 강사들과 함께 긴밀한 관 계를 형성하면서 언어와 문화를 배울 수 있었다. 둘째, 북한이탈주민들은 수혜자라는 지역주민들의 편견으로 인해 어려움을 경험했지만 혜택만 받 는 사람이 아니라 평생교육을 통해 세금을 납부하는 근로자가 되어 대한 민국 국민으로서 자긍심이 높아졌다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 광주광역 시에 거주하는 북한이탈주민의 통합과 평생교육 프로그램 개발을 위한 현실적이고 효과적인 평생교육의 역할을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있 을 것이다.

본 연구는 북한이탈여성 노인의 성공적 노화 척도개발과 신뢰도, 타당 도를 검증하기 위한 연구이다. 연구자는 북한이탈여성 노인 20명을 심층 면담하여 구성요소를 설정했다. 포커스 그룹을 걸쳐 북한이탈여성 노인 의 성공적 노화 척도 예비문항을 개발했다. 이러한 작업을 수행한 후 문 항분석, 상관관계 분석, 탐색적 요인분석, 확인적 요인분석을 실시하여 척도의 신뢰도와 타당도를 검증했다. 연구결과 4요인 모델, 5요인 모델, 6요인 모델 모두 적합도 검증 결과 판정기준을 만족하는 것으로 분석했 다. 적합도 지수가 높게 나타난 6요인 모델을 최종적으로 선정했다. 연 구결과에 근거하여 북한이탈여성 노인에게 특징적으로 나타난 죽음인식, 자기성장, 모호한 상실 속에서의 가족 애착 등에 대한 논의를 했다.

‘크로스 플랫폼’(cross platform) 시대로 불리는 콘텐츠 패러다임의 전환기를 맞아, 지금까지 ‘서브 컬처’(sub-culture)로 불리던 웹툰이 OTT 플랫폼의 원천 IP(지식재산)로 급부상하고 있다. 웹툰은 팬덤을 통한 흥 행성 확보 및 독창성·확장성 등의 장점을 무기로 유력한 거점 콘텐츠 IP 로 각광받고 있다. 넷플릭스 등 OTT 플랫폼에서 K-드라마의 글로벌 경 쟁력을 확인시킨 <킹덤>, <이태원 클라쓰>, <스위트 홈>, <지옥>, <지금 우리 학교는> 등은 모두 웹툰을 원작으로 하고 있다. 특히 웹툰은 스토 리의 완결성과 세계관을 가진 원천 콘텐츠로서 영상, 게임 등 다양한 분 야로 IP 확장이 가능하기 때문에 미디어 생태계의 새로운 ‘가치사 슬’(value chain)로 떠오르고 있다. 이러한 시점에서 본 연구는 OTT 플 랫폼을 통해 공개된 국내 웹툰 콘텐츠의 활용 사례와 IP 확장에 유용한 전략으로 기대되는 ‘트랜스미디어 스토리텔링’과의 상관관계 연구를 통해 웹툰의 세계관 확장에 대한 시사점을 모색해 보고자 한다.

이 연구는, 생활종교(lived religion) 연구 방법을 사용하여, 한국의 대표적인 여성 작가이자 가톨릭 신자인 박완서와 공지영이 어떻게 그리스도교를 해석하고 그것을 문학적 실천에 반영했는지를 탐구한다. 박완서는 종교는 사람의 중심을 바로 잡아주는 것이라 보았고, 이에 따라 반성을 중요한 종교적 실천으로 보았다. 반면에, 공지영은 종교는 사람의 진실을 알아주는 것이라 보았고, 따라서 자기 용납을 중요한 종교적 실천으로 보았다. 이들은 종교에 대한 이러한 해석을 문학의 의미와도 연결했는데, 그 해석이 문학적 실천으로 드러난 대표적인 사례로 박완서의 ｢사람의 일기｣와 공지영의 󰡔우리들의 행복한 시간󰡕을 생활종교의 관점에서 분석하였다. 결과적으로 박완서의 생활종교는 유교와 그리스도교의 혼종 양상을 띠면서 자기를 반성하는 인간으로 표상되며, 공지영의 생활종교는 그리스도교와 치료 심리학의 혼종 양상을 띠면서 자기를 용납하는 인간으로 표상되었다. 이 연구는 20세기 말에서 21세기 초 한국 사회의 그리스도교 혼종 양상과 실천의 다양성 그리고 변화를 엿보게 해준다는 데에도 의의가 있다.

목적: 본 연구는 국내 초고령자를 대상으로 삶의 만족도 및 우울과 라이프스타일신( 체활동, 식습관, 참여빈도, 참여다양성) 간의 상관관계를 확인하고, 삶의 만족도와 우울에 영향을 미치는 라이프스타일 요인을 분석 및 확인하고자 하였다. 연구방법: 본 연구의 독립변수는 라이프스타일 요인으로 신체활동, 규칙적 식습관, 참여빈도, 참여다양성이었으 며, 종속변인은 삶의 만족도와 우울이었다. 분석을 위해 SPSS를 이용해 상관관계분석 및 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 결과: 다중회귀분석을 통해 삶의 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 참여빈도(t = 6.262, p < 0.001)와 규칙적 식습관(t = 4.627, p < 0.001)이 통계적 유의성을 가지는 것으로 확인되었으며, 우울에 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 참여빈도(t = 6.540, p < 0.001)와 규칙적 식습관(t = 4.061, p < 0.001)이 통계적 유의성을 가지는 것으로 확인되었다. 결론: 본 연구를 통하여 국내 초고령자의 삶의 만족도와 우울에 영향을 주는 라이프스타일 요인을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구 결과를 토대로 초고령자의 삶의 만족도와 우울 개선을 위해서는 라이프스타일을 기반으로 하는 다면적 중재 프로그램이 필요하다.

본 연구는 한국계 미국작가 이혜리와 크리스 리의 작품을 통하여 두 작가의 탈북서사가 재현하는 기독교의 모습을 탐구한다. 두 작품은 특히 미국문학의 영역에서 탈북을 소재로 삼았다는 점과 탈북서사와 기독교와의 만남을 예시한다는 점에서 주목할만하다. 작가는 환란으로 점철된 탈출의 여정에서 탈북자들이 기독교적 구원의 메시지를 접하면서 종교적 주체로 전환하는 모습을 탐구한다. 기독교는 사마리아인의 옷을 입고 절대적 환대와 구원을 설파하지만, 때로는 탈북자들의 삶에 고통과 고난을 가중하는 거대악으로 묘사되기도 한다. 이혜리의 탈북서사는 위험천만의 순간에도 신의 섭리에 의존하고 인간의 안위를 신에게 위탁하는 기독교적 낙관주의를 유지한다. 반면 크리스 리의 소설에서 교회는 오히려 탈북인의 생존과 자유로 향한 의지를 위협하는 일탈의 모습으로 형상화된다. 두 작가의 문학이 다른 방식으로 기독교를 재현하는 과정을 추적하면서 궁극적으로 작품이 은유하는 ‘믿음’과 ‘구원’의 문제를 고찰한다.

본 연구는 한국어 학습자들이 자신들의 언어학습 신념이 그들의 전반 적인 언어학습과 새로운 환경에 적응하는 것에 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 찾기 위함이 목적이다. 여섯 명의 한국대학교에 재학 중인 외국인 유학 생들을 대상으로 그들의 언어학습 신념에 대한 인터뷰가 진행되었다. Horwitz의 BALLI 문항을 기반으로 한 반구조적 인터뷰가 진행되었으며, 그들의 답변은 외국어 능력, 언어학습의 어려움, 언어학습의 본성, 학습 과 소통전략, 동기와 기대 등의 주제를 기반으로 비슷한 패턴을 보이는 항목별로 구분되어졌다. 연구 결과는 외국인 유학생들은 그들의 한국어 실력이 향상될수록 자신감을 가졌으며, 그들은 문화에 대한 학습이 언어 학습에 중요한 부분이라는 것을 인지했다. 또한, 가장 효과적인 학습법은 실제적인 상황과 사람들과 어울리는 것을 꼽았으며, 그들은 대학 졸업 이후에도 한국에 남아 있기를 희망했다.

Nanoparticles are commonly used to avoid the opaque white color of TiO2 based sunscreen. However, a dispersing agent is typically required because of the tendency of the nanoparticles (NPs) to agglomerate. Stearic acid is one kind of dispersing agent often used for sunscreen products. However, according to the MSDS data sheet on stearic acid, stearic acid is highly hazardous to aquatic life and causes irritation on human skin. To avoid this problem, in this study a safer organic dispersing agent extracted from Korean seaweed has been studied to disperse TiO2 nanoparticles, and further use as an active agent in sunscreen products. The presence of phytochemicals in seaweed extract, especially alginate, can disperse TiO2 nanoparticles and improve TiO2 dispersion properties. Results show that seaweed extract can improve the dispersion properties of TiO2 nanoparticles and sunscreen products. Reducing the agglomeration of TiO2 nanoparticles improves sunscreen properties, by making it less opaque white in color, and increasing UV protection value. It was also confirmed that adding seaweed extract into sunscreen products had no irritating effects on the human skin, making it more desirable for cosmetics application.

This study utilizes social big data to investigate the factors influencing the awareness, attitude, and behavior toward vegan fashion consumption among global and Korean consumers. Social media posts containing the keyword “vegan fashion” were gathered, and meaningful discourse patterns were identified using semantic network analysis and sentiment analysis. The study revealed that diverse factors guide the purchase of vegan fashion products within global consumer groups, while among Korean consumers, the predominant discourse involved the concepts of veganism and ethics, indicating a heightened awareness of vegan fashion. The research then delved into the factors underpinning awareness (comprehension of animal exploitation, environmental concerns, and alternative materials), attitudes (both positive and negative), and behaviors (exploration, rejection, advocacy, purchase decisions, recommendations, utilization, and disposal). Global consumers placed great significance on product-related information, whereas Korean consumers prioritized ethical integrity and reasonable pricing. In addition, environmental issues stemming from synthetic fibers emerged as a significant factor influencing the awareness, attitude, and behavior regarding vegan fashion consumption. Further, this study confirmed the potential presence of cultural disparities influencing overall awareness, attitude, and behavior concerning the acceptance of vegan fashion, and offers insights into vegan fashion marketing strategies tailored to specific cultures, aiming to provide vegan fashion companies and brands with a deeper understanding of their consumer base.

This study explores Korean EFL learner preferences and perceptions of digital composing (DC) with innovative online technology tools during the implementation of emergency remote learning measures. The research compares learner use of text-based DC and voice-based audio asynchronous online discussion (AOD). This paper investigates the following research problem: What digital modes of interactive, online instructional design can serve as appropriate, learner-accepted replacements for offline instruction? One prior finding indicated that Korean undergraduate EFL learners preferred text and audio DC to video modes. To follow up, this paper investigates 57 learners’ preferences and perceptions toward text-based and voice-based DC, and compares the results. The data analysis methods employ paired-samples Tests, and a thematic analysis to identify issues raised in student comments. The results reveal that learners’ levels of user satisfaction with voice-based audio AOD and their ratings of its perceived usefulness confirm that it can be a satisfactory, effective, and preferable task for engaging learners in digitally-mediated four-skills practice. Another finding is that utilizing a voice-based audio module did not significantly alter learners’ course satisfaction when superseding a text-based module. These findings inform pedagogical practice with empirical insights regarding learners’ use of digital technologies, levels of acceptance, and DC preferences.

이 연구는 한국어교육능력검정시험의 문법 영역 문항이 예비한국어 교 사가 갖추어야 할 문법 교육 역량을 평가하기에 타당한지를 비판적으로 고찰하고, 한국어교육능력검정시험 문법 영역 문항의 개선 방안을 구체 적으로 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법으로는 한국어교육능력 검정시험 제1회(2006년)-제18회(2023년)까지의 시험 문항에서 한국어 문 법 영역과 관련이 있는 한국어어휘・형태론, 한국어통사론, 한국어규범, 한국어문법교육론 과목 623개의 문항을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 전체적 으로 이론적인 문법 지식을 묻는 문항으로 출제가 되는 경향이 많았다. 그렇지만 한국어 교사에게는 교실 현장에서 외국인 학생들에게 쉽고 재 미있게 가르칠 수 있는 ‘가르치기 위한 지식’이 중요하다. 그러므로 한국 어교육능력검정시험의 문법 영역에서도 예비한국어 교사들이 한국어 교 실 현장에서 실제적으로 접하게 될 교실 현장과 관련이 있는 문항으로 출제가 되어야 할 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구가 예비한국어 교사의 한국 어 문법 교육 능력을 제대로 측정할 수 있는 한국어교육능력검정시험의 초석이 되기를 바란다.

현재 우리 군에 입대하는 초급간부와 병사들의 대부분은 후기청소년들 이다. 그러나 이들을 위한 장려정책에 대한 고민은 매우 부족한 실정이 다. 이에 본 연구를 통하여 후기청소년기의 특성을 분석해보고, 이들을 위한 병영문화 개선과제에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다. 본 연구에서 적용한 주요 연구방법으로 연구 특성을 고려하여 병영문화 개선 및 MZ 세대 연 구와 관련 학술지, 학위논문 등 문헌연구와 일부 실증연구 자료를 활용 하였다. 후기청소년기의 장병 특성을 고려해서 한국군의 병영문화 개선 에 대해 다음 몇 가지 방안을 도출하였다. 첫째, 병사계층의 권한과 책임 강화. 둘째, 여성가족부의 지원을 통한 군내 후기청소년의 정신발달과 스 트레스 극복 방안 마련. 셋째, 마약을 비롯한 항정신성 약물에 대한 강력 한 대응. 넷째, 초급간부에 대한 관심 필요. 이외에도 후기청소년 전문가 양성과 후기청소년을 위한 이해 등의 과정도 고려되어야 한다. 마지막으 로 정서지능 향상을 위한 의사소통의 활성화와 사회경험 제공 방안에 대 한 검토가 필요하다. 본 연구를 통하여 군 내에서 후기청소년에 대한 인 식이 확대될 수 있을 것이며 이를 통해 후기청소년들은 더 많은 성장을 이루어 낼 것이다.

Acknowledging the limited opportunities faced by learners of Korean in the US, this study investigates the efficacy and challenges of immersive Korean language-focus residential programs in US college dormitories. Through an examination of a Korean language dormitory (called K-house) at a Midwestern university in the US, the current study sheds light on the optimal experiences and effective immersive environments that college langauge dormitory programs in the US can foster for both linguistic and cultural learning of Korean. By delving deeper into the specific programming and experiences of K-house residents, the study demonstrates that K-house facilitates access to Korean language and culture, enhances motivation of Korean language study, and cultivates a sense of belonging to the K-house community among K-house residents. Additionally, the findings of this study provide valuable insights for designing effective Korean language dormitory programs that promote language and cultural immersion in the context of teaching and learning Korean as a foreign language. Furthermore, this study offers suggestions for future research in this area.

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of machine translation by Uzbek-speaking Korean learners, focusing on their usage patterns, attitudes, perceptions, and expectations, as well as identifying the educational implications of using machine translation. An online survey, lasting two weeks, involved 85 Korean language learners from universities in Korea and Uzbekistan. The main findings indicated a high reliance on machine translation for Korean language learning, with the majority of respondents using machine translations to find accurate vocabulary and expressions. Regarding their attitudes towards machine translation, learners mainly utilized it for literal communication, reading, and writing, and were generally satisfied with them, especially as tools for learning spellings and pronunciations. The use of machine translation significantly influenced learners’ confidence, interest in learning, and anxiety reduction. In terms of perception, learners found machine translation effective for learning Korean vocabulary, expressions, and writing, but also perceived machine translators as sources of stress and anxiety. Expectations for using machine translation were high for completing tasks in vocabulary, expression, and writing, but low for improving grammar skills and producing error-free Korean expressions.

This study investigated and analyzed the recognition and needs for Korean communication competency among non-Korean learners who participated in an online Korean language course. To this end, the importance, performance, and necessity of the categories of communication competency recognized by Korean language learners were measured, and then IPA(Importancce-Performance Analysis: Martilla & James, 1977) analysis and Borich’s needs analysis(Borich, 1980) were used. After implementation, we examined whether there were differences in outcomes depending on learner variables. After examining the sub-items, it was found that there were differences in importance, current level, and need depending on the learner’s home country, and there were differences in current level, demand, and necessity depending on academic background and Korean language proficiency. In addition, there are differences in need depending on the learner’s reason for learning Korean, so it is necessary to respond to individual learnier’s needs according to learner variables when designing curriculum for online foreign language learners of Korean.
