Bongik-dong, Kwonnong-dong, Ikseon-dong and Nakwon-dong are areas around Donhwamun-ro in Seoul. These residential areas began to be developed collectively from the 1920s and the construction period was the fastest among hanok residences collectively formed in urban center. At that time, houses were developed with high density. In the 1920s, many medium-sized plots of less than 3,300㎡ were distributed around Donhwamun-ro. Private developers such as Jeong Se-kwon(Konyangsa), Shin Tae-jong, and Yoon Heung-rim, who were active at the time, purchased medium-sized plots. Developers sold out the land directly or after constructing Hanok on the divided plot and then selling them. This method of developing hanok residences by private developers in the 1920s have influenced on hanok residences which began to be developed after the 1930s. Currently, many urban Hanoks still remain in areas around Donhwamun-ro. The initial aspects of the hanok development in the 1920s could be grasped through blocks, plot division, alleys, row house Hanok etc around Donhwamun-ro.
본 연구의 목적은 주거지역 녹지공간의 유형별 식재 특성을 분석해봄으로써, 향후 녹지공간 개선 을 위한 대안을 제시함에 있다. 난창시의 5개 주요 주거지역의 녹지를 공공, 도로 및 주택녹지로 구분하고, 전체 30곳을 대상으로 8개 평가항목(①식재 수종의 다양성, ②관상용 식물의 다양성, ③식물 계절별 다양성, ④수종별 성상 다양성, ⑤녹지와 인공환경과의 조화, ⑥녹지와 생활환경 과의 조화, ⑦녹지와 주거 환경 전반과의 조화, ⑧조경공간의 다양성)에 대한 AHP 분석을 수행하 였다. 결과를 정리해보면, 첫째, 난창시 주거지역 녹지경관의 경우 상대적으로 최근에 조성된 주거지역이 구 주거지역보다 우수함을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 공공녹지에 대한 평가 결과 관상용 식물을 포함한 개방, 반개방 및 위요된 공간이 확보된 대상지가 높게 평가되었다. 셋째, 도로녹지 의 경우, 그늘을 줄 수 있는 교목의 식재 및 대교목 및 소교목의 조화를 이루는 층위식재 지역이 상대적으로 높은 값을 나타내었다. 넷째, 주택녹지는 다양한 수종과 지피식물의 식재 등으로 식물 밀도가 높은 곳의 점수가 높게 나타났다. 향후, 주거지역의 녹지경관 개선을 위해서는 식재 수종 및 성상별 다양성, 층위를 고려한 식재, 그리고 최근 식재 설계의 경향이라 할 수 있는 볏과 및 사초과 식물의 식재와 같은 초본류 식재를 확대하여 상대적으로 오래된 주거지역의 개선에 활용 할 수 있다. 또한 이용자들이 개방감을 느끼고, 충분한 채광이 가능하도록 개방공간의 설계가 필 요하며, 필요에 따라 반개방공간 및 위요된 공간의 적절한 배치가 필요하다.
본 연구는 택지개발사업으로 조성된 단독주택용지가 ‘주택의 노후화와 토지이용의 혼재, 비주거시설의 확산, 공실(빈집) 증가 등으로 주거환경이 악화됨에 따라 범죄가 증가할 것이다’라는 가설 아래 진행되었다. 조성된 지 27년이 지난 단독주택용지를 대상으로 1996년 토지이용실태에 관한 연구 자료와 비교·분석하고, 주거환경과 폭력·절도범죄 발생(2006~2018년)과의 관계를 분석․고찰하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 1996년에 비해 2016년 비주거시설이 2배 이상 증가하며 지구 내 집산도로에 접한 주거지 내부로 확산되었고, 업무와 종교, 공실의 비율이 증가하였다. 둘째, 폭력범죄는 통과교통이 발생하는 보조간선과 집산도로에 접한 용도혼재 필지에서 발생비율이 높았고, 제2종근린생활시설 중 주류 판매시설이 밀집한 곳에서 집중되어 발생하였다. 셋째, 절도범죄 중 침입절도범죄율이 높게 나타났고 비주거건축물(39.7%) 보다 주거건축물(60.3%)에서 발생률이 높았다. 넷째, 공실이 있는 건축물에서의 범죄율은 높지 않지만, 공실이 입지한 가로의 인접 건축물과 노상에서 중복적으로 범죄가 발생되었다. 이러한 분석결과는 노후주거지의 주거환경 향상을 위해 주민과 행정 및 경찰이 협력하여 CPTED 사업 추진에 활용할 수 있고, 향후 단독주택용지를 조성함에 있어 ‘안전성’을 확보할 수 있는 가로 및 필지체계 계획과 지구단위계획에 반영할 수 있다.
Level of urbanization in China has reached 53.73% in 2013, indicating a tremendous progress on the urbanization of China. On the other hand, the number of villages in China reduces by around one million from 3.6 million in 2000 to 2.7 million in 2010 (Zhang, 2014). Issues in both urban and rural areas of China appear, including the imbalance between increased population and limited resources in urban region, and more significantly, the increasing disparity between rural and urban areas. Chinese researchers interpret and analyse these matters from different perspectives. For instance, Zheng (2006) and Ma (2006) suggest the importance of the infrastructure construction and public service. Wu (2006) advises that the government should pay attention to the development of the secondary and tertiary industry. Wen (2005) proposes that the improvement of social institution and the recovery of social cultural environment are required to achieve sustainability in the urbanization process in China. Previous studies in environmental psychology put quality of life, attachment to place, and residence satisfaction at the center to understand the relationship between inhabitants and their neighborhood of residence. However, there are gaps in this research realm in both practice and theories. Firstly, very limited research studies this environmental psychology issue in China (e.g. Mao, Fornara, Manca, Bonnes, & Bonaiuto, 2015). Secondly, there are different opinions on the causal order between quality, attachment, and satisfaction.
Research on the relationship between perceived residential environment quality (PREQ), place attachment, and environmental satisfaction has not reached a consensus. The debate on the direction of the causal relationship between perceived quality and satisfaction has been summarized by Bradya and Robertson (2001). They conclude that the quality to satisfaction causal order holds up well across diverse cultures. However, relevant debate is still ongoing. A number of research articles place satisfaction as an antecedent to attachment, e.g. Chen, Dwyer, and Firth (2014); Lee, Kyle, and Scott (2012); Ramkissoon and Mavondo (2015); etc. Some argue that place attachment is an indicator of satisfaction. Kyle et al. (2004) investigate the effect of place attachment on the perceived values of tourists and find that place attachment is an important factor explaining the variance of perceived values. This is supported by research e.g. Hwang, Lee, and Chen (2005); Prayag and Ryan (2012); Yuksel, Yuksel, Biljm (2010); etc.
As to the relationship between perceived quality and attachment, the debate has not stopped. Through comparisons, Mesch and Manor (1996) conclude that the residents who give a higher evaluation of the social and natural environment may have greater place attachment. Brown, Perkins, and Brown (2003) also suggest that the residents who agree that the street environment is better would attach to this place. Sam, Bayram, and Bilgel (2012) have certified the relationship between residential environment quality and place attachment. Furthermore, Borrie and Roggenbuck (2001) and Walker and Ryan (2008) find that the connection between human beings and the nature environment would affect their affection toward the environment. It means that the closer the relationship with the nature environment is, the stronger the attachment would be, which in turn, enhances the intentions to protect the environment. This quality to satisfaction relationship is supported by other research such as Bonaiuto, Aiello, Perugini, Bonnes, and Ercolani (1999); Grisaffe and Nguyen (2011); Yu, Chen, and Chen (2015); etc. Nevertheless, a different opinion arguing that attachment to a place may affect one’s perception on the quality related to a place is emerging in tourism research (e.g. Neuvonen, Pouta, & Sievänen, 2010).
This paper takes the credit of quality → attachment → satisfaction causal order as the initial model and proposes three hypotheses as follows. H1a: One’s PREQ has a positive impact on his/her attachment to this place; H2a: One’s attachment to a place has a positive impact on his/her satisfaction to the environmental settings in this place; H3a: Place attachment in addition performs as a mediating role between PREQ and environment satisfaction.To be noted, the initial model has its theoretical basis as discussed above but is not necessarily the absolute optimal model. Relatively, this model provides more theoretical interpretation and practical implications in the specific research context: residential psychology in urban and rural areas of China. On this basis, this article further examines a competing model illustrating an alternative theoretical framework on the relationships between these three constructs (satisfaction → attachment → quality). Relatively, another group of hypotheses in this competing model is listed as follows. H1b: One’s attachment to a place has a positive impact on his/her PREQ; H2b: One’s satisfaction to the environmental settings in this place has a positive impact on his/her attachment to this place; H3b: Place attachment in addition performs as a mediating role between environment satisfaction and PREQ.
A survey approach is employed and data are collected from several backgrounds. Dataset A (rural) is collected from three villages from Heilongjiang Province and two villages from Shandong Province in China from July to August 2014. The choices of the provinces, rural areas, and the sampling process are random. 490 valid questionnaires are included in the data analysis. Dataset B (urban) is collected via an online survey portal, which allows a nationwide sampling reach. In total 1368 online survey entries are recorded and 420 valid questionnaires are included, resulting in a valid rate of 30.7%. The measures for each construct are based on an extensive literature review. The measurement of perceived residential environment quality is from Sam, Bayram, & Bilgel’s (2012) development on the perception of residential environment. The measurement of place attachment in this study is adopted from Kyle, Graefe, and Manning’s (2005) and Chen, Dwyer, and Firth’s (2014) evaluation based place attachment dimensionality and scales. As for the scale of environmental satisfaction, Pelletier, Legault, and Tuson’s (1996) measure was applied. All the entire variables adopted multiple-item, 5-point Likert scales were adopted, where “1” indicated “strongly disagree” and “5” indicated “strongly agree”. After pre-testing the preliminary version of the survey instrument, a revised version was developed.
This study adopts structural equation modeling (SEM) based on partial least squares (PLS) modeling given the small sample size and the explorative purpose of this study (Dijkstra & Henseler, 2015a). The software used was Smart PLS 3.0. The reliability and validity of the constructs were assessed. Cronbach’s alpha and the value of CR of each construct were found to exceed the cut-off value of 0.70 (Fornell & Larcker, 1981), except for adequacy of education which is close to 0.70 (only for Cronbach’s alpha but not for CR). Furthermore, the AVE of each construct exceeded the variance attributable to its measurement error cut-off value of 0.50 (Chin, 1998; Fornell & Larcker, 1981). In addition, heterotrait-monotrait ratio (HTMT) is recommended as a better method to test discriminant validity (Henseler, Dijkstra, Sarstedt, Ringle, Diamantopoulos, Straub, Ketchen, Hair, Hult, & Calantone, 2014). The result shows that there is neither value of the HTMT higher than the threshold of 0.85 nor confidence interval containing the value one, indicating that all the constructs exhibit satisfactory discriminant validity.
The hypothesized effects in the theoretical model were tested by structural equation modeling (SEM). The first group of models tested the effect of perceived environmental quality on environmental satisfaction through place attachment i.e. initial model (Model A, Model B, Model C), while the second group of models tested the reverse effect of environmental satisfaction on perceived environmental quality through place attachment (Model D, Model E, Model F). Both the full model and the multi-group model were tested. The value of SRMR of the full model that tests either the effect of perceived environmental quality on environmental satisfaction (SRMR = 0.104, t = 41.826, p < 0.001) or the reversed effect (SRMR = 0.106, t = 37.736, p < 0.001) shows that the models fit the data quite well (Dijkstra & Henseler, 2015b). However, the former is little bit more significant.
In this study, PREQI is found different impacts on place attachment and environmental satisfaction. This provides evidence to support a similar mechanism of studying residents’ psychology with SERVEQUAL model. However, the model testing is found significantly different between rural and urban samples, indicating a systematic difference in the psychology of rural and urban populations. Quality attachment satisfaction causal order is found significant and supported by both samples in this study. However, a reversed causal order model (satisfaction attachment quality) is also supported by the samples. Although the results may not be able to end the debate on alternative models between PREQ, place attachment, and environmental satisfaction, this paper provides empirical evidence from a specific context (urban and rural China) for further research. Specifically, PREQ has a significant impact on place attachment in both urban and rural areas in China. As for the impact of place attachment on environmental satisfaction as well as the indirect impact of PREQ on environmental satisfaction, the influence is more significant in cities of China compared to rural areas. This suggests in the urban areas in China, affective and emotional responses to their lives play an important role to residents. Local government in cities should balance between improving and maintaining quality of the environment and strengthening local residents’ psychological attachment to the place. Governments in rural areas, on the other hand, should lay great focus on the physical aspects of the environment including nature, health, education, commerce, and venture of the rural areas, to enhance residents’ living experience and satisfaction.
Further, there are some limitations. Although this study attempts to clarify the framework of “perception-affection-attitude” in the field of environment management, considering the practical implications, the future study could bring the individuals’ behaviors or intentions into this model such as willingness-to-pay for environment-friendly products. It will also benefit from reviewing more literature on community-based social marketing.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the odor arising from the Cheong-ju industrial complex area for odor materials confirmation, and to predict the impact of the odor in the residential area using the CALPUFF Model. Among the odor causing substances in the area with a rising number of collective complaints due to odor, methyl sulfide, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, n-buthylaldehyde, n-valeraldehyde and styrene were detected. Odor causing substances detected in the area surrounding the industrial complex include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, n-buthylaldehyde, toluene, xylene, benzene and styrene. Using the CALPUFF Model, it was predicted that 1hr average was 3.981~7.553 OU/m3 and 24hr average was 1.753~2.359 OU/m3. In terms of odor intensity, the predicted 1hr average was 0.6~0.9 and the 24hr average was 0.2~0.4.
The study of odor generation conditions in urban areas which were outside odor controlled(or management) areas were investigated using the air dilution olfactory method and instrumental analysis in Incheon city. From the study the generation of odor from residential sources and industrial sources was different from region to region. Odor intensity was high in industrial regions in the afternoon, but was low in school regions in urban areas. From the analysis, more effective regional policy suggestions to address different kinds of odor problems in urban areas are proposed.
This study provides a descriptive and analytical account of major aspects of urban development and transformation of housing types of Italian Firenze from the 13th century to the 19th century. It is a typo-morphological depiction of urban spatial structure of the extraordinary city, Firenze, the center of Italian Renaissance. And this study has proceeded on the assumption that the evolving form of the urban structure and housing types cannot be understood without reference to the larger context of political, economic, and social life. Based on these backgrounds, the purpose of this study is threefold: to provide a comprehensive discussion of general characteristics of urban spatial structure of Firenze, and to explain the process of formation of working-class neighborhoods by constructing new city wall in later 13th century, and to discuss transformation of housing types of the working-class neighborhood with understanding the mechanism of existence of housing in the newly formed residential neighborhoods. The development of residential neighborhoods was pursued by 'planned' manner through forming square-shaped blocks, and characterized by the subdivision of larger properties into standardized building lots for the construction of houses. On the bases of documentary evidences, several ecclesiastical institutions are identified as the agents of a distinctive type of development. While the institutions did the major role for developing lands, the construction of houses was done by small scale construction agents with moderate amount of properties. The major housing type of working-class neighborhoods of Firenze has been the 'casa a schiera' characterized by the form of narrow front and long depth. The type was generalized by the newly formed middle and working-class of Firenze which grew their body very rapidly, Even though the type assumed very uniform in its fen there were many variations. And through passing time, the casa a schiera developed to be multi-family housing, and the level of variation became deepen. Eventually, transformation of housing type of Firenze was ended by appearance of the 'casa in linea', which was very similar to modern apartment in its spatial organization.
This study examines the changes in environmental resource perception and residential areas on Jeju Island. This study focuses on Jeju Island, which has prepared a legal framework for the total amount of environmental resources. The study identifies Jeju residents and non-provincial citizens, analyzes the differences between them, and suggests the future direction of the total amount system for environmental resources. This study aims to provide essential data necessary for successfully implementing the assigned environmental resources. This will contribute to sustainable growth and preserving valuable environmental resources in an era where environmental importance is increasing. The findings indicate that both Jeju residents and non-provincial citizens are satisfied with the current environmental resources on the island. However, when comparing past and current environmental resources, Jeju residents generally indicated lower satisfaction over time, whereas non-provincial citizens perceived an improvement over time. While overall satisfaction with the natural and local environment remains high, there is a notable increase in perception regarding the ecological value of plants, wildlife, wetlands, and Gotjawal areas compared to the past. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating these high-priority components into the total environmental resource system for future consideration.
초등학생들의 농업에 대한 이해도를 조사하여 농업 관련 효과적인 프로그램 운영과 효율적인 프로그램 개발을 도모하고자 본 연구를 실시한 결과, 학년에 따라 부모님 농사 여부는 차이가 없었고 지역에 따라 부모님 농사 여부는 차이가 있었다. 부모님이 농사를 짓는 학생의 수가 가장 많은 지역은 산청(31.7%)이고, 그 다음은 의령(22.1%), 남해(15.7%), 하동(14.6%), 진주(10.1%) 순이었다. 성별에 따라 부모님 농사 여부에는 차이가 없었고, 전체 학생 중에서는 부모님이 농사를 짓는 학생의 수는 14.1%이고 부모님이 농사를 짓지 않는 학생의 수는 85.9%였다. 사는 지역별로 부모님이 농사를 짓는 학생의 수가 가장 많은 곳은 면이고, 그 다음으로는 읍, 동의 순이었다. 학년에 따라 부모님 식물 가꾸기 선호도에 차이가 없다고 나타났으며, 지역에 따라서는 부모님 식물 가꾸기 선호도에 차이가 있다고 나타났다. 부모님 식물 가꾸기 선호도가 가장 높은 지역은 산청 지역이고 그 다음으로는 하동, 의령, 진주, 남해의 순이었다. 성별에 따라서는 여학생의 부모가 남학생의 부모보다 식물 가꾸기 선호도가 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 사는 지역(읍/면/동)에 따라 부모님 식물 가꾸기 선호도는 차이가 없다고 나타났다.학생들의 농업에 대한 이해도는 4학년에서 6학년까지 학년별로 차이가 있었으며 학년이 높아질수록 이해도가 높았다. 지역에 따라서도 농업에 대한 이해도 차이가 보였다. 즉, 진주, 하동 지역의 초등학생들이 이해도가 높고 산청 지역은 낮았다. 남해와 의령은 다른 지역과 차이를 보이지 않았다. 농업에 대한 이해도의 학생들의 성별에 따른 차이는 없는 것으로 보였다. 지역(읍/면/동)에 따라 농업에 대한 이해도 전체가 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났는데, 동에 사는 초등학생들이 읍에 사는 초등학생들보다 농업에 대한 이해도가 높은 것으로 나타났고, 동과 읍 지역 사이에는 차이가 있었고 면 지역은 두 지역과 차이가 없다고 나타났다. 부모님 농사 여부에 따른 초등학생들의 농업에 대한 이해도는 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났고, 부모님의 식물가꾸기 선호도에 따른 초등학생들의 농업에 대한 이해도는 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 부모님이 식물가꾸기를 좋아하는 정도가 높을수록 초등학생들의 농업에 대한 이해도가 높았다. 따라서 어린이들의 농업에 대한 이해도는 주거지역이나 외부환경의 변화보다 체계적인 교육 프로그램을 통해서 높일 수 있을 것으로 보이며, 앞으로 학교 통합교육에 농업관련 프로그램을 적용할 때 농업에 대한 이해도를 살펴보는 것은 프로그램의 효과를 판단하는 중요한 척도가 될 것으로 판단된다.
The present study aims to evaluate the characteristics of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in roadside and residential areas of two Korean metropolitan cities (Seoul and Incheon) and a background area (Seokmolee). This purpose was established by analyzing temporal and spacial concentration distribution of total and 7 individual PAHs, which were extracted from ambient particulate matters, and by utilizing a multivariate statistical method (principal component analysis, PCA) for the qualitative determination of potential PAH sources. Target PAHs included benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), chrysene (Chr), dibenzo(a,h)anthracene (DahA), and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene (IcdP). For all surveyed sites, the concentrations of total PAHs were higher in winter season than in other seasons. However, the concentrations of individual PAHs varied with surveyed sites. In both residential and roadside sites of Seoul and Incheon, BbF revealed the highest atmospheric levels. For all 7 target PAHs, the ambient concentrations were higher in Seoul and Incheon than in a background area (Seokmolee). In both residential and roadside areas, the concentrations of 4 target PAHs (BaA, BbF, BkF, DahA) were higher in Incheon than in Seoul. However, both the residential and roadside Chr concentrations were comparable in Seoul and Incheon. In addition, the residential IcdP concentrations were higher in Incheon than in Seoul, whereas the roadside concentrations were higher in Seoul. The roadside and residential BaP concentrations exhibited the reverse result to the IcdP concentrations. An PCA analysis suggested that atmospheric PAHs in both residential and roadside areas would be due to combined effects of several potential sources such as gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles, coal/oil combustion, and waste incineration.
We measured ambient concentrations of hazardous air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aldehydes in residential areas nearby small and medium scale shipbuilding companies. The VOC concentrations were higher during the normal operation periods than vacation at which almost all operations were shutdown. Concentrations of VOCs was higher, as the sampling site was nearer from shipbuilding companies. The major components of VOCs were m,p-xylene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, toluene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene which had been found as major VOC compounds emitted from painting processes of shipbuilding in the previous studies. The major components of aldehydes analyzed were benzaldehyde, acrolein, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde. The concentration of aldehydes was highest at the furthest sampling point from shipbuilding companies because the formation of aldehyde compounds could be occurred by the secondary chemical reactions of VOCs. The results of this study shows a proper counterplan need to be established for the reduction of hazardous air pollutants emitted from small and medium scale shipping companies.
본 연구는 해양건축물 또는 워터프런트 개발계획에 있어 특히 워터프런트에 입지하는 주거단지 계획에 역점을 투어 사용자의 측면에서 기존 워터프런트 주거단지의 거주환경 만족도를 조사, 분석 하였다. 또한 통일 주거단지 내에서도 각층별, 방위별, 위치별 쾌적성에 대해 분석하여 가장 선호하는 층, 방위 위치 통에 관한 근거를 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 1) 만족도의 순서는 남향, 남동향, 동향, 남서향의 순으로 나타났으며 남향, 남동향의 선호 경향이 절대적으로 우세한 것으로 나타났다. 2) 전체 응답자의 67%이상이 향보다는 외부로의 조망이 좋아야 한다고 응답하여 워터프런트 주거단지에 있어서는 조망에 대한 중요성이 매우 크다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 3) 경관 선호도를 분석한 결과는 안벽형 워터프런트, 호안형 워터프런트 덴 하천형 워터프런트의 세가지 Type의 경관별로 약간의 차이는 있었으나 공통적으로 고층부 경관이 가장 높은 선호도를 보였으며 저층부 경관이 상대적으로 가장 낮은 선호도를 보여주었다.
Recently, Environmentally friendliness and sustainability become the main concern of residential area planning. This paper deals with the estimation indicator system for environmentally friendliness of residential areas. An interview survey was carried out for resident groups by the type of housing.
'Environmentally friendly residential site' is defined as "A site of sustainable development with low undesirable impact on environment, friendliness to natural environments such as green areas and waters, and amenity, health & hygiene of residents". Totally, nineteen individual indicators, six categories and three principles(Low Impact, High Contact, Amenity & Health) were proposed as estimation indicator system. Residents showed high importance on principle of 'amenity & health'. Individual indicators such as 'garbage segregated collection', 'secure green areas' and 'cleanness of water and air' showed high weighting value by each principles. Satisfaction level of residents for individual indicators, such as 'garbage segregated collection', 'common gardens', and 'cleanness of residential areas', were comparatively high. By the result of factor analysis, the proposed model for indicator system was valid.
Air pollution from the Daegu industrial complex (DIC) in Korea has been a common nuisance and cause of complaints for nearby residents. The current study measured the indoor and outdoor levels of six VOC (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and three isomeric xylenes) at two residential areas with a different proximity to the DDIC, plus the ambient levels at two industrial areas within the boundary of the DDIC. The QA/QC program included the range of correlation coefficient (0.94~0.99) for calibration curves, within the permissible range. Toluene was the most abundant VOC in the ambient air both in residential and industrial areas. Both indoor and outdoor air concentrations of all target VOC except benzene were higher in residential area near the DIC compared to that further away from the DIC. Moreover, the ambient air concentrations of all target VOC except benzene for two industrial sites (A and B) were significantly higher than the outdoor or indoor air concentrations in the two residential areas. The findings further suggested that VOC ambient levels measured in a residential area near the DIC be used as a potential indicator of odor-causing unidentified air pollutants transported from the DIC. Moreover, it was found that the elevated ambient toluene levels outweighed the indoor sources with respect to the environmental exposure of residents nearby the DIC. However, in the residential area further away from the DIC, the toluene indoor sources outweighed the outdoor sources.
