Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.60 presents the response spectra for the seismic design, especially for the safe shutdown earthquake (SSE), of nuclear power plants. This guide is applicable to a two-step process involving the issuance of construction permits and operating licenses (10 CFR Part 50) as well as the issuance of combined construction and operating licenses (COLs), early site permits (ESPs), and standard plant design certifications (10 CFR Part 52) [1]. New reactor designs, however, require modified design response spectra (MDRS) by broadening the high-frequency range from design response spectra (DRS) in RG 1.60. In order to generate artificial time histories to meet the acceptable criteria described in NUREG-0800 [2], it9s necessary to develop the power spectral density of the MDRS. In this paper, we generate the artificial earthquake time histories of the MDRS for further research.

Nuclear fuel assemblies are exposed to high temperature and high pressure environments underwater for long periods of time in a reactor, leading to deterioration of the assembly structure. These assembly consists of fuel rods, grids, a top nozzle, a bottom nozzle and guide tubes. In particular, the integrity of the guide tube made of Zircaloy-4 is a very important part in handling the assembly. In the Post Irradiation Examination Facility (PIEF), there are 14×14 Westinghouse STD assemblies that have lost their handleability due to the top nozzle being removed for damaged fuel rod test. To handle these assemblies, it is reasonable to use cut guide tubes whenever possible. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the irradiation embrittlement state of the guide tube before designing or manufacturing parts that can connect the top nozzle and the guide tubes. Therefore, in this paper, the location for installing the top nozzle-guide tube connection parts was selected in the height range of 3,460 to 3,713 mm, and guide tube specimens were made within that range. Offset strain was derived from the load-displacement curve obtained through compression testing to confirm whether the ductility of guide tubes was maintained. As a result, there was no significant difference in strength and ductility of the guide tube within the above length range. In addition, it was confirmed that the ductility was maintained enough to install the top nozzle-guide tube connection parts. Therefore, it is judged that there will be no problem even if the top nozzle-guide tube connection parts are installed in the guide tube to restore the handleability of the assemblies.
As an initial part of Kori-1 & Wolsung-1 Unit decommissioning planning, a characterization plan is developed to define the nature, extent and location of contaminants, determine sampling locations and protocols, determine quality assurance objectives for characterization, and define documentation requirements. The actual characterization of a facility is an iterative process that involves initial sampling according to the characterization plan, field management (such as labeling, packaging, storing, and transport) of the samples, laboratory analysis, conformance to the data quality objectives (DQOs), and then identifying any additional sampling required, refining the DQOs, and modifying the characterization plan accordingly. The final product of the facility characterization is a document that describes the type, amount, and location of contaminants that will require consideration and removal during the decommissioning operations sufficient to prepare a decommissioning plan. In this study, implementing a characterization plan, developed in accordance with this standard, will result in obtaining or deriving the above information.
Recently, more than 70 SMRs have been developed around the world due to their modularity, flexibility, and miniaturization. An innovative SMR (i-SMR) is also being developed in Korea, and operators are planning to apply for a Standard Design Approval (SDA) in 2026 after completing the standard design. Accordingly, regulatory organizations are conducting R&D on regulatory requirements and guidelines for systematic SMR standard design review by referring to IAEA and NRC cases. In terms of security, SMRs are expected to undergo many changes not only in terms of physical security through security systems, security areas, and vital equipments, but also in terms of cybersecurity through new digital technologies, remote monitoring, and automated operation. Accordingly, the IAEA Fundamental Safety Principles (SF-1) require operators to improve the safety of nuclear facilities by considering security requirements, access control requirements, and the results of operational impact assessments based on threats from the design and construction stages. Similarly, the U.S. nuclear regulatory body (NRC) has confirmed the status of security assessment and design considering design basis threats (DBTs) in the NuScale standard design review process, and the Canadian nuclear regulatory body (CNSC) has revised security regulatory guidelines and applied them to the SMR standard design review. Among these various activities related to SMR security, this paper analyzes the major changes in the cybersecurity regulatory guidelines for SMRs recently revised by the CNSC, the Canadian nuclear regulatory body. Compared to the previous guidelines, the Defensive Cybersecurity Architecture (DCSA), including external logical access control, security level and zone communication requirements, verification and validation (V&V) activities during development phases, and system & service acquisition security requirements have been added. Other changes, such as the cyber incident response program, will be analyzed and compared. Through the revised regulatory guidelines, the CNSC has divided cybersecurity levels into four (High, Moderate, Low, and Business), strictly prohibiting remote access to High and Moderate levels, and allowing remote access to Low levels only for maintenance purposes. In addition, the paper will analyze the detailed revisions, such as prohibiting access to the High level from lower levels and allowing only handshaking signals from the Low level to the Moderate level.
Sustainable and healthy diet is a challenge in recent world. Despite the global depletion of water resources, Korea has no system for controlling its water footprint. This study established the water footprint tables of Korean food using the Water Footprint Network databases, and applied them into two meal plans for 19~64 year-old adults recommended in the Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans 2020. Nut, oil, and meat’s water footprints were higher and those of fruit and vegetable were lower. Sesame oil had the highest water footprint of 21,793 L/kg and pineapple had the lowest domestic water footprint of 102 L/kg. Water footprint of one serving size of beef was 925 L, that of chicken was 260 L, and those of soybean were 43 L in global and 81 L in domestic. The water footprint of the recommended 2,400 kcal meal plan was 2,882 L, and that of 1,900 kcal meal plan was 1,915 L. The water resources can be saved by choosing food with lower water footprint. The results of this study can be used in the further researches for more sustainable and healthier Korean diet.
Recently, halogen lamps for vehicle exterior lamp systems are being replaced by LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) in consideration of miniaturization, power consumption, life, luminance, and eco-friendliness. Due to regulations on the amount of light required, luminance, light uniformity, and glare prevention, it is required to develop a light guide for controlling a light source of an LED lamp for a vehicle. For the development of the light guides, the development of machining technology that can cut micro patterns of hundreds of micrometers scale into surface roughness of tens of nanometers scale must be preceded. In this study, the effect of variations in cutting conditions on surface roughness was analyzed through experiments. The micro patterns was manufactured by cutting into STAVAX material, and the surface of the micro patterns was super-finished using a ball-shaped PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tool without flutes. In experiments, the cutting conditions of the super-finishing process were varied, and the varied cutting conditions were feed rate, radial depth of cut, and spindle speed
The skeleton of fuel assembly is composed of top nozzle, bottom nozzle, grids, and guide tubes. In the reactor core, all the parts of the fuel assembly suffer degradations due to the condition of high temperature, pressure and water environment. Therefore, many material properties of high temperature mechanical strength, corrosion and irradiation resistance have been considered to choose the material for fuel assembly parts in the fuel development stage. The guide tubes have important roles to connect each parts and support the load of fuel assembly while the fuel is lifted. In Westinghouse 14×14 standard fuel assembly, Zircaloy-4 was used for the material of the guide tubes. Zircaloy-4 has a resistance to water corrosion and maintain good mechanical properties after the discharge from the core, so this alloy is also utilized for a fuel rod cladding material although the microstructure is slightly different due to the heat treatment difference. Thus, it is expected that there is no issue regarding the guide tube integrity after the discharge and during the storage in the pool, especially in case of low burn-up. However, the surface oxidation and resultant hydrogen pick-up can affect to the embrittlement to the Zr alloy. So, it is needed to know the actual status of spent fuel assembly by performing post-irradiation examination. In this study, the degradation level of the guide Tubes in low burn-up spent fuel assembly was investigated using the KAERI PIE facility in order to make some data which can be utilized to the baseline for evaluating the integrity of the spent fuel skeleton.
Gamma-ray spectroscopy, which is an appropriate method to identify and quantify radionuclides, is widely utilized in radiological leakage monitoring of nuclear facilities, assay of radioactive wastes, and decontamination evaluation of post-processing such as decommissioning and remediation. For example, in the post-processing, it is conducted to verify the radioactivity level of the site before and after the work and decide to recycle or dispose the generated waste. For an accurate evaluation of gamma-ray emitting radionuclides, the measurement should be carried out near the region of interest on site, or a sample analysis should be performed in the laboratory. However, the region is inaccessible due to the safety-critical nature of nuclear facilities, and excessive radiation exposure to workers could be caused. In addition, in the case of subjects that may be contaminated inside such as pipe structures generated during decommissioning, surveying is usually done over the outside of them only, so the effectiveness of the result is limited. Thus, there is a need to develop a radiation measurement system that can be available in narrow space and can sense remotely with excellent performance. A liquid light guide (LLG), unlike typical optical fiber, is a light guide which has a liquid core. It has superior light transmissivity than any optical fiber and can be manufactured with a larger diameter. Additionally, it can deliver light with much greater intensity with very low attenuation along the length because there is no packing fraction and it has very high radiation resistant characteristics. Especially, thanks to the good transmissivity in UV-VIS wavelength, the LLG can well transmit the scintillation light signals from scintillators that have relatively short emission wavelengths, such as LaBr3:Ce and CeBr3. In this study, we developed a radiation sensor system based on a LLG for remote gamma-ray spectroscopy. We fabricated a radiation sensor with LaBr3:Ce scintillator and LLG, and acquired energy spectra of Cs-137 and Co-60 remotely. Furthermore, the results of gamma-ray spectroscopy using different lengths of LLG were compared with those obtained without LLG. Energy resolutions were estimated as 7.67%, 4.90%, and 4.81% at 662, 1,173, and 1,332 keV, respectively for 1 m long LLG, which shows similar values of a general NaI(Tl) scintillator. With 3 m long LLG, the energy resolutions were 7.92%, 5.48%, and 5.07% for 662, 1,173, and 1,332 keV gamma-rays, respectively.
This study aims to understand the opening efficiency of the finless porpoise escape guide net by the type of extension net that is the part to which the escape guide net is attached in stow net. To this end, extension nets were manufactured in full size and the net mouth area and towing tension were investigated according to the towing speed (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 m/s) and the type of extension net (25 mm net and raschel net) in the water tank. As a result, the net mouth area of the guide net was larger when the raschel net was used for the extension net than when the 25 mm net was used under all towing speeds. In addition, regardless of the type of extension net, the net mouth area reached about 80% of the maximum value at a towing speed of 0.4 m/s. In the field, fishing operation of stow net is performed only when the current speed is above 0.4 m/s. Therefore, the speed of 0.4 m/s was confirmed as a meaningful value to determine whether it is possible to operate. As a result of analyzing the relationship between the net mouth area of the guide net and the towing tension, it was confirmed that the difference in the net mouth area of the guide net according to the type of the extension net was due to the difference in the solidity ratio.
In this study, a rocking behavior experiment using a guide plate and a guide channel to prevent lateral deformation of a steel damper was planned. For this purpose, strut I-type specimen I-1 and strut S-type specimen S-1 were prepared. The experimental results were compared with the existing experimental results of SI-260 and SS-260 under the same conditions without the details of lateral deformation prevention in order to evaluate the effect of preventing lateral deformation. The damper with lateral deformation prevention detail was evaluated to have superior strength capacity, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity than the damper without it. Therefore, the lateral deformation prevention detail was evaluated to have a good effect in improving the design capability of the steel damper.
In this study, we studied the method of using general architectural glass instead of using the existing acrylic material for high luminance flat lighting. The flat panel lighting used the side illumination method to increase the ease of installation and aesthetic satisfaction. In general, glass has an amorphous structure with a lower angle of refraction than acrylic, so it is not suitable for use in flat panel lighting as a light guide, but in this study, the role of light distribution characteristics and diffusion patterns in the case of using such a glass light guide. Quantitative simulations were conducted to confirm new possibilities. In the simulation, the backlight estimation method was used, and about 10,000,000 rays were placed within a unit area in order to obtain a result similar to the real thing. As a result of the simulation, the geometry of the diffusion pattern could be specified, and the value of the geometry could be quantified using the ratio of the diameter and height of the pattern. As a result of the calculation, it was found that the maximum amount of light was generated around 75 degrees by quantitatively calculating the ratio and the outgoing light angle at which the maximum value of the outgoing light occurred between 05 and 1.0. As a result of these studies, it was confirmed that it is possible to use ordinary glass at the same time as a transparent window and light-emitting lighting at night.

In this study, in order to observe the effect of guide bar installation conditions on the ship’s anchor containment by varying the guide bar installation conditions were comprehensively observed. The proper installation of the guide bar, it is possible to improve the hammering phenomenon that occurs when the anchor chain falls vertically. It was confirmed that the anchor storage condition could be improved not only by the guide bar, but also by adding a welding bead at an appropriate location. The capacity of the power source has a significant effect on the anchor pendulum motion.
The cast iron pipe protection of submarine cables has a bump in the connection, so the guide device for checking the position and location of the submarine cable must pass through the curved surface. Since the connection is present at a regular intervals, impact loads are periodically applied, affecting the durability of the guide device. In this study, the design was changed to improve the durability of guide device links. And for the analysis of the durability for link of guide device, the flexible dynamic analysis of the guide device was performed using MSC.Adams, and the dynamic stress acting on the link was calculated using MSR(Modal Stress Recovery) method. As a result, the dynamic stress is reduced by 17.9%~31.1%. In addition, durability was calculated for the initial model and the improved model. As a result, the durability of the new model was improved more than 200 % better than to the initial model.
