The purpose of this study is to investigate the space composition and landscape structure around the village forests in five villages located on the coast of Wando-gun. The research focuses on field investigation and literature review. The results of this study are as follows In the case of village forests constructed for the protection of villages and cultivated areas in the coastal area of Wando-gun, which is the study area, it is confirmed that there are mountains behind the forests. Through the analysis of landscape elements, it was concluded that two types of layouts exist. Regarding the space composition around the village forest on the coast, it was found that there is a type A arranged in the order of sea → coast → village forest → village → cultivated land → rear mountain, and a type B arranged in the order the sea → coast → village forest → cultivated land → village → cultivated land → rear mountain. In the analysis of landscape characteristics, the elevation angle from the coast to the top of the mountain behind the village forest was measured. Accordingly, elevation angles of approximately 16°–17° in the type A arrangement and 7°–9° in type B arrangement were determined. From these results, it can be confirmed that the space composition and placement of the village forest with disaster prevention function vary according to the distance and elevation (changes in elevation angle) from the coast to the rear mountain.

In 2015, Baekje Historical Site was listed as a World Heritage Site. Therefore, the interest in Baekje heritage has increased rapidly, but there is insufficient research on how to utilize it. In addition, research on street composition based on historical and cultural resources is increasing, and it is necessary to find a way to establish and utilize local identity. The research method of this study is as follows. First, literature survey was conducted. Second, we used cameras to photograph the current status and color conditions. Third, the color characteristics of the photographs were analyzed through ‘Korea Standard Color Analysis (KSCA)’ program and ‘Easyrgb’ Internet program. For image analysis, we analyzed the I.R.I color sensitivity scale. Fourth, the characteristics of color and image and color characteristics and image of royal tombs in Gongju Baekje Historical Remains District were compared and analyzed by combining the results of Gongsan Fortress and Songsalli Ancient Tomb. The N and YR sequences were the most frequent in the Baekje Historical Remains. Wangneung-ro were N, Y, Y, B and R sequences. As a result of comparing and analyzing them, N and YR series were found, but the colors which were not seen in Baekje Historical Remains District such as B series and R series were derived. In addition, the Baekje Historical Remains District overlapped the ‘noble' image adjective area, and the adjectives such as ‘traditional’ and ‘calm’ were typical, but the ‘modern' adjective region overlapped with the royal tomb, Adjectives appeared as adjectives such as ‘urban' and ‘progressive'. As a result, it was found that the color characteristics and images of Baekje Historical Remains were opposite. It is considered that differentiated utilization methods are needed to establish the characteristics of the historic city and the identity of the princess. Baekje Historical Remains District is a place rich in potential to grow as a burial heritage representative of Korea. Therefore, it can be used as a strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of the region during the development of the history through the above research.

When the Japanese Empire demolished the fortress of Daegu Eupseong, the rivers that flowed into Daegu City were covered over. At present, most of the rivers in the urban area, such as Dalseo-cheon, Beomeo-cheon, Daemyung-cheon, Daegu-cheon, and Icheon-cheon, are concealed under concrete. These submerged rivers are old waterways with historical features, and there is a need to track and restore these waterways to improve the environment and landscape, and restore the ecology of the city. This study constitutes basic research on restoring the old waterway of Dalseo-cheon (which formerly comprised part of the moat of Daegu Castle) by creating an artificial stream in the area. The purpose of the study is to investigate citizens’ opinions on the introduction of such a stream, as well as on recreational and functional spaces that could be created alongside it. As a result of the study, we found that awareness of the covered waterways in Daegu City was low, but citizens generally considered it necessary to recover the old waterways, improve the residential environment, mitigate the urban heat island, strengthen the sense of place, build a water-circulation system, and improve the aesthetics of the landscape. In addition, the respondents stated that they would prefer a natural-type stream in front of a park, and would like various facilities that could improve the water-landscape function, as well as the stream’s ecological and water-friendly functions. The introduction of new waterways in the city center of Daegu will help to create a riverside and historical park, while maintaining a balance in regard to the conservation and development of historical and traditional cities, thereby transforming the city into a differentiated city.

While designation status of state-appointed cultural properties, promotion status of scenic sites, overlap with natural parks, and relationship with both nine river bends and eight views were reviewed, application and promotion status of scenic sites were analyzed by exploring culture and tourism websites of local governments and tourist leaflets on scenic sites. The results of the analysis are as follows. There are totally 109 designated scenic sites in Korea and these are distributed in 59 local governments, which account for 26.1% of local governments. Accordingly, unequal regional distribution was found to be significant. As a result of the exploration of the status of overlapping between scenic site-designated areas and national, provincial, and county parks, altogether 53 designated scenic sites that account for 48.6%, overlapped with natural parks. Thus, there is a great need for role sharing and cooperation with natural park management entities in terms of experience programs within scenic sites and cultural commentaries. Meanwhile, there is a significant difference among the local governments regarding the efforts in highlighting cultural properties as tourist resources while universal awareness and promotion of scenic sites was found to be very low. Marking scenic sites on leaflets were prone to lag behind those on homepages. The analysis on status of scenic sites revealed that festivals and events were being held in 39.4% of scenic sites and those with longer designation- lapsed years were associated with the prevalence of festivals. Moreover, natural scenic sites located in natural parks were unwilling to be used through local government’s awareness and tourism endeavors compared to historical and cultural scenic sites. Additionally, several wrong descriptions were found on the markings of scenic sites and thus, promotion of scenic site culture and operational management requires urgent improvement.

This study aims to acquire basic data for creating a new landscape forest by examining and analyzing both current and desired images of a forest in a rural neighborhood park. Regarding the forest in Janggye Neighborhood Park, located in Janggye-myeon, Jangsu-gun, Jeollabuk-do Province, this study conducted a questionnaire, using one-on-one interviews, to survey residents in Janggye-myeon who visited the park, and a total of 58 questionnaire copies were used for analysis. The current image about the forest was analyzed as giving a common and non-mysterious impression, and the subjects did not notice seasonal changes very much. Overall, the residents had negative images about the current forest. The desired image of the forest is a forest that is amiable, beautiful, comfortable, safe, and pleasant. A t-test was conducted to identify differences between the current image and the desire image, and its results showed that there were significant differences in most variables. The factor group implying the forest image consists of fascination dimension and diversity dimension. When factor scores of the current image and the desired image were compared, there were bigger differences in the fascination dimension scores than in the diversity dimension scores. As a result, it is drew that it would be much more effective to prioritize images related to fascination dimension in creating a forest landscape in Janggye Neighborhood Park.

This study aims to present a strategic direction in revitalizing tourist destinations using the concept of “functional adaptation” and applying it to the Yedang National Tourism Resort located in Yesan-gun in Chungcheungnam-do, which is losing its functionality as a tourist attraction. The term “functional adaptation” as used in this study refers to applying an intervention to natural changes while maintaining the existing functions, adapting them to changing tourism marketing paradigms. First, problems and potential functions were derived from relevant literature, on-site surveys, and in-depth interviews with insiders from the target resort. Indicators of revitalizing tourist destinations were then preselected from the reviewed literature data, and the final function-adaptive activation indicators were developed after subjecting the preselected preliminary indicators to reliability testing through a Likert-scale questionnaire survey with experts. Finally, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was employed for an importance-analysis of individual elements of the developed indicators. The analyses revealed the tourism resort’s “storytelling development” as having the highest importance, followed by “transport connectivity”, and “amusement/leisure programs offered”. The function-adaptive activation indicators developed in this study were applied to the Yedang National Tourism Resort for the importance-analysis of its functions, but the generalizability in applying the proposed indicators to other tourist sites has not yet been established. The findings of this study are expected to serve as an input for setting up strategies for tourist site revitalization in future in-depth research.

The aim of this project was to present a landscape design proposal for the rooftop terrace of the College of Art and Design building in Kyunghee University. The design is based on the contemporary concept of “coworking” in order to encourage multidisciplinary development of projects among students of different fields within the college. This design suggested an inclusive programming strategy for an inspiring outdoor environment. With the assumption that the successful development of a landscape project relies on the collaboration between nature and humans from different specialties, this design attempted to improve the link described above and to stimulate, through the designed setting, a living environment. The main concept was inspired by the relationship between the common honeybees (Apis mellifera), which represent social insects, and their relation with flowers. The honeycomb- shaped (hexagonal) modular unit enables various forms of the process of collaboration among the students, which provides a sense of place and an aesthetic value to the site as a whole. In addition, the site is composed of three floor levels, which are meant for different functions according to the level of intensity of activity. The first level is divided into two areas, one meant for low intensity activity (secret garden) and the second one meant for medium intensity activity (a space for meeting and conversation). The second level is designated for more diverse activities, and therefore, the intensity of activity would be higher. The third level was planned as a planting experiment zone with a medium level of activity. Considering the intention of the place to improve the physical and mental well-being of students and teachers through physical interaction with nature, this design proposal is expected to inspire other professionals who deal with similar contexts, such as, and in particular, a college environment with diverse disciplines or any type of rooftop garden in an urban context.
