        The study was carried out to know the occurrence of the chilli trips of two varieties from three grape farm in Kyeongsangbukdo province, Korea. During the grape fruiting season, this work surveyed at intervals of about fifteen days from Jun to September, 2015 by using the yellow sticky trap. The peak occurrence time of chilli thrip at Hwaseo-myeon was in September and was August at Modong-myeon. The Gyeongsan site was almost more three times high occurrence density than that of Hwaseo-myeon and Modong-myeon of Sangju area. According to the variety and locality, occurrence time and density were different hightly.

        Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) are major pests on greenhouse crops including sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in South Korea. To manage this pest complex effectively, it is fundamental to understand population dynamics and spatial distributions of the pests. In this study, we conducted visual counting and used yellow sticky traps to monitor whitefly and thrips populations in sweet pepper greenhouse (6 × 28 m). The survey was conducted every two weeks over two months. A total of 84 traps were set up at 20cm from the plant top canopy and spaced 1m apart from each other. Leaves were selected randomly from the middle plant canopy for visual counting at the same sampling locations. The trap data indicate that the numbers of whiteflies and thrips increased from 5.50 ± 0.34 to 168.51 ± 14.95 and from 52.40 ± 1.67 to 158.42 ± 7.44 (mean ± SE) per trap, respectively, over the two-month observation period. In general, the spatial distributions of these pests aggregated near the greenhouse entrance with significant positive correlation between the densities of the two species (r = 0.74, P = 0.02). However, the results of visual counting were completely different; either species was rarely found on leaves, even when the trap catches were relatively high at the same locations. That is, there was no correlation between visual counting and sticky trap data sets. The current study will serve as a fundamental step to develop reliable and effective management programs for greenhouse sweet pepper.

        Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and F. intonsa (Trybom) have been shown asymmetrical occurrence pattern in pepper and strawberry fields. To explain this phenomenon, interactive influence of temperatures (20, 25, and 30ºC) and relative humidities [Low (50-55%), Medium (70-75%), and High (90-95%)] were assessed on pupal and adult stage of the two thrips species. In pupal stage, mortality of both species decreased as the humidity increased without significant difference between the species. Also, pupal duration of the two thrips decreased as RH increased from low to high in all the temperatures tested, but significantly shorter duration was found in F. intonsa. In adult stage, F. intonsa survived better than F. occidentalis only in high humidity at both 20 and 25ºC. Frankliniella intonsa survived 2.5 and 2.4 times longer as RH increased from low to high at 20 and 25ºC, respectively, whereas F. occidentalis survived 1.8 and 1.6 times longer, respectively. In conclusion, both pupae and adults of F. intonsa performed better at higher RH condition compared to F. occidentalis. Thus, difference in relative susceptibility to changing environmental condition can be one of the underlying mechanisms for the differential occurrence pattern in the fields.

        꽃노랑총채벌레는 꽃을 선호하며 국화의 주요해충이다. olfactometer를 이용하여 국화가 꽃노랑총채벌레를 유인하는 트랩식물로서 효용가치가 있는지를 조사하였다. 유리온실에 심겨져 있던 스텐다드국화의 화색별 꽃노랑총채벌레의 밀도를 타락법을 이용하여 조사한 결과, 개화시기의 경우에는 핑크색, 흰색, 노랑색의 꽃에서 각각 18.4, 56.6, 52.6 마리였고, 잎에서는 7.8, 16.6, 15.4 마리가 채집되었다. 꽃봉오리 형성시기의 경우에는 꽃봉오리에서 15.2, 45.8, 41.6 마리, 잎에서는2, 8.8, 3.4 마리였다. Y-tube olfactometer 시험에서 선호하는 쪽으로 향하는 꽃노랑 총채벌레의 수는 노랑색에 대하여 빨강색, 보라색, 흰색 꽃의 후각반응을 조사한 결과, 분명한 차이가 없었다. 4-way olfactometer 시험의 경우, 냄새와 동일한 시각자극이 주어졌을 때 꽃노랑총채벌레의 빈도수는 빨강색(1.3), 보라색(3.7)흰색(2.0) 보다 노랑색(10.7)을 선호하였고, 후각적 자극이 교란된 시각적 반응에서도 빨강색 (3.3), 보라색 (1.3), 흰색 (3.0) 보다 노랑색 (10.0)을 선호하였다. 노랑색의 시각적 자극만 제외하고 다른 꽃의 시각적인 자극과 동일한 후각적 자극을 주었을 경우에는 빨강색 (4.7), 보라색 (4.7), 노랑색 (2.0) 보다 흰색(8.3)을 선호하였다. 꽃노랑총 채벌레는 꽃이 개화하기 전에는 꽃의 후각적인 자극에 먼저 반응하여 꽃봉우리로 이동하고 개화되었을 때에는 꽃의 색깔에 더 잘 반응하여 노랑색꽃을 선호하는 것으로 보아 후각적인 자극보다는 시각적인 자극에 더 잘 반응하였다.

        볼록총채벌레는 제주도 감귤에서 경미한 피해만 보고되다가 2007년부터 다발생하여 그 피해가 갈수록 심각해지고 있다. 본 연구는 적산온도를 이용하여 볼록총채벌레 각 발생세대의 발생최성기를 예측할 수 있는 모형을 개발하고자 수행하였다. 볼록총채벌레 성충 발생세대수를 독립변수(x)로 취급하고 세대별 발생최성기의 적산온도를 종속변수(y)로 취급하여 직선 회귀식을 추정하였다. 감귤원에서 유살된 자료와 녹차 또는 키위과원에서 얻은 자료를 기반으로 각각 감귤기반모형(y = 310.9x + 69.0, r2=0.99) 녹차기반모형(y = 285.7x + 84.1, r2=0.99)을 개발하였다. 각 모형의 예측값과 독립된 포장 실측자료와의 잔차자승합을 토대로 모형의 적합성을 평가하였으며, 녹차기반모형의 적합력이 좋았다. 본 예측모형을 통한 계산값과 실측치의 불일치에 대한 원인과 모형의 포장 활용도에 대하여 고찰하였다.

        Yellow tea thrip (Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is anthophilous pests of many crops worldwide including five flavor berry. And the mealy bug (Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli (Cooley) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)) is one of the hardest pests to control. Its body is covered with white waxy threads, which often make a chemical pest control useless. Five flavor berry (Schisandra chinensis Baill) is used in traditional Chinese medicine. So, the development of biological control against the major pest on five flavor berry is of great interest. In this work, a treatment of Chrysoperla nipponensis (Okamoto) was applied to five flavor berry fields infested by P. cockerelli and a treatment of Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot was applied to two types of five flavor berry fields infested by S. dorsalis. Even though our tests found significant differences between the two culturing method(sod culture, nonwoven type mulching), the treatment of biological control agents decreased or a little increased the fruit damage, which was comparable to the chemical insecticide treatment. In the sod culture experiment, thrip population was significantly low and increased at a lower rate than in the nonwoven type mulching. It may be suggested from these results that A. swirskii and C. nipponensis as IPM program and sod culture could be incorporated into the integrated pest management system on five flavor berry.

        Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) are sympatric thrips species infesting crops including strawberry and pepper. Recently, F. intonsa was found as a dominant species locally even though F. occidentalis has been considered as a major species in Korea. We suggested interspecific competition as a underlying mechanism for the asymmetrical abundance. Effect of the competition on adult reproduction and longevity of the two thrips species was assessed in leaf cage and microtube arena, respectively. The number of reproduced progeny was reduced by 79% for F. occidentalis and only 43% for F. intonsa in competition condition. The mean longevity was also reduced greater in F. occidentalis (by 41%) than in F. intonsa (23%). Based on these results, it is probable that interference competition exists between the two species, and F. intonsa is better competitor than F. occidentalis. Therefore, interspecific competition might affect field occurrence pattern of the two thrips species.

        제주지역 노지감귤에서 2007년부터 볼록총채벌레 Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood에 의한 피해가 증가하고 있으나 시기별 발생특성에 관한 연구는 명확하지 못한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 감귤원 주변에 분포하고 있는 볼록총채벌레의 기주식물 종류와 이와 연관된 발생특성을 구명하였다. 감귤원 주변에서 조사된 볼록총채벌레의 기주식물은 수목류 23과 39종, 초본류 10과 15종으로 총 32과 54종이었다. 조사된 기주식물 중 볼록총채벌레 제1세대 발생과 관련된 것은 인동덩굴과 사위질빵, 송악, 아왜나무였으며, 이들 식물에 월동성충이 3월 하순~4월 상순에 산란하여 성충이 4월 하순~5월 하순에 발생되는 것으로 추정되었다. 감귤 피해와 관련된 기주식물은 예덕나무와 동백나무 그리고 사위질빵, 계요등, 거지덩굴 같은 덩굴성 식물이었다. 황색끈끈이트랩을 감귤나무와 감귤원 경계에 설치하여 볼록총채벌레의 시기별 발생밀도를 조사한 결과 비슷한 발생양상을 보였으며, 연간 7세대를 경과하는 것으로 추정되었다. 감귤 열매에 피해를 주는 시기는 6월 하순~7월 상순과 8월 하순~9월 상순으로 어린 열매와 성숙 초기 2회에 걸쳐 피해를 주며, 이는 각각 볼록총채벌레 제 3세대와 제 6세대 성충 발생 최성기와 일치하였다. 볼록총채벌레 발생밀도는 기주식물의 새순 발생량에 따라 차이가 컸으며, 감귤원 주변 기주식물에서 번식한 후 감귤나무로 이동하여 피해를 주는 것으로 나타났다.

        In the case of one standard-mum polyvinyl house, the density of F. occidentalis reached its peak in early June and decreased after the chemical control, which was carried out periodically. In the case of another standard-mum polyvinyl house, the density of F. occidentalis increased continuously in spite of the periodical chemical control after planting. In both polyvinyl houses, the density of F. occidentalis began to increase mid-May. The numbers of F. occidentalis collected on a tray with wet paper by heating the flowers of pink, white, and yellow Chrysanthemum standard mums were 18.4, 56.6, and 52.6 after flowering, but in the case of the leaves, the numbers were 7.8, 16.6, and 15.4. Also, the numbers of F. occidentalis collected on a tray with wet paper by heating the buds of pink, white, and yellow Chrysanthemum standard mums were 15.2, 45.8, and 41.6, but in the case of the leaves, the numbers were 2, 8.8 and 3.4. In the Y-tube olfactometer test, the frequency of F. occidentalis’ visits to one side arm of the Y-tube olfactometer was higher in the odor cue of the white flower than of the yellow, red, and violet flowers, but in the other combinations without white flowers, the frequency was higher in the odor cue of the violet and red flowers than of the yellow flowers. In the case of the four-choice olfactometer test, in the same visual cues as the odor cues of the pot mum flowers, the frequency of F. occidentalis was higher in the yellow flower than in the other flowers (white, red, and violet) in all the observation times (10, 15, and 20 minutes). In the case of the visual cues with disturbed odor cues, F. occidentalis preferred the yellow color to the other colors in all the observation times (10, 20, and 40 minutes). F. occidentalis preferred the white color to the other colors when the same odor cues as the flower color were provided, but the odor cue of the yellow flower was provided only without the color cue.

         ,  , Silver-grey or dark brown scaring, or dark brown discolored damages caused by the yellow tea thrip, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) have occurred on citrus fruits cultivated in the open field in east-south area orchards of Jeju Island since 2007. The weekly population of yellow tea thrips adults caught with a yellow sticky trap increased gradually from early May and peaked in late August, 2009. In 2010 and 2011, the most population was in early October. The yellow tea thrips of some species usually dominated from July in open citrus fields, and seven generations, at least, had occurred from May to late October 2009 by a yellow sticky trap survey. In 2009, S. dorsalis larva were observed from July and with peaks from late August to mid September and early October on citrus fruits. The damage symptoms appeared in the mid September. In 2011, the population peaks were in early July and late September, and the symptoms increased continually from mid July to late October. The symptoms were silver-scars or initial dark discolorations and then gradually changed to dark-brown discolorations or dark-brown scars. The percent of damaged fruits were 0.9%, 0.4%, 0.8% and 2.7% in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively, by survey in 64 typical orchards in Jeju Island. We are the first to report symptoms of the yellow tea thrip (Scirtothrips dotsalis) on citrus fruits.

         ,  , This study was conducted to develop economic injury level (EIL) of onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, on welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L. var) in the early transplanting stage. The changes of welsh onion biomass, yield loss, and T. tabaci density were investigated according to the inoculation periods of T. tabaci. In the early transplanting stage of welsh onion, the yield loss (%) increased with increasing inoculation periods: 17.0, 53.3, 38.4, and 80.8% yield loss in 5, 10, 15, and 20 d inoculation periods, respectively. The relationship between Cumulative Insect Days (CID) of T. tabaci and yield loss (%) of welsh onion was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL of T. tabaci on welsh onion was estimated to 30 CID per plant based on the yield loss 12% (an empirical gain threshold 5% + marketable rate 93% of welsh onion). ET was calculated to 24 CID, which corresponds to 80% of EIL. Until a more defined EIL-model is developed, the present results should be useful for T. tabaci management in early growth stage of welsh onion. The effect of T. tabaci attack on the yield of welsh onion in late growing season (120 days after transplanting) was also examined. The yield of welsh onion increased at a low population density of T. tabaci and decreased at higher densities, showing a typical over-compensatory response.

        Anaphothrips Uzel, 1895 is a large genus in the family Thripidae with about 80 species in the world. Members of the genus are generally found on plants of the grass families, Poaceae and Cyperaceae. Anaphothrips was formerly paraphyletic group until critical review by Bhatti (1978), who elevated six subgenera to generic status. Only one species, A. obscurus (Muller, 1776), has been known in Korea. It widely distributes and rarely damages to forage crops. As a result of this study, Anaphothrips asahi Kudo, 1989 is found for the first time in Korea. A. asahi easily distinguished from A. obsurus by undivided 8th antennal segment and C-shaped glandular areas on abdomen of male. Although not frequent, A. asahi also widely distributes in our country. For identification, morphological characters of two species in Korea are described and figured. In addition, biological information about distribution and plant relationship is also presented.

        Reported herein is the use of mycotized millet grains with entomopathogenic fungi applied to soil to control western flower thrips (WFT), Franklinella occidentalis. The majority of mature larvae move from plants to soil for pupation. Mycotized millet grains with Beauveria bassiana ERL1170 and Metarhizium anisopliae ERL1171 were mixed in the upper layer of potting soil containing a blossomed marigold as a banker plant. B. bassiana GHA, a commercial isolate, served as a control. One week post applicaion 3 mated WFT females were added per plant. At 8 wks post infestation WFT mortality in pots with ERL1170 and ERL1171 treatments was 90% and 81% respectively compared to GHA with 15% mortality. Plants in the two ERL treatments had lower levels of damage. The insecticidal activities were positively associated with the fungal soil colonization. No significant release of fungal innoculum from the potting medium was observed. These results suggest that soil applications of entomopathogenic fungi can reduce WFT populations to significantly low levels by targeting pupae. Application timing and the life cycle of WFT are important considerations.

        Dendrothripine thrips are distinguished from other members of Thripidae by a remarkably elongate, “lyre-shaped” metasternal endofurca. This furca extends to the mesothorax as a pair of sinusoidal curved spurs, providing the insertion points for powerful muscles arising from the hind legs of the salatatorial thrips. The subfamily Dendrothripinae, formerly known for a long time as the tribe Dendrothripini since Priesner (1925), was up-ranked to subfamily level of Thripidae by Bhatti (1989). Of the 97 species in 15 genera known worldwide, Dendrothrips minowai Priesner, 1935 and Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa, 1908) have been hitherto reported from Korea. In this study of the Korean Dendrothripinae, two species of genus Dendrothrips, D. ornatus (Jablonowski, 1894) and D. magnoliae Kudo, 1984, are found for the first time. However, D. minowai Priesner recorded by Woo (1974), is excluded from the Korean fauna because of misidentification as supposed by Kudo (1984). Morphological characters for identification of three species including P. mori previously recorded are described and figured with a key to Korean species of Dendrothripinae.

        This study was conducted to develop economic injury level (EIL) and economic threshold (ET) of onion thrips, Thrips tabaci on welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L. var). The changes of welsh onion biomass and T. tabacci density were investigated after introductions of T. tabacci at different densities and days: By the results of the experiment in the early welsh onion cultivation periods (30d after transplanting), the biomass of welsh onion significantly decreased with increasing the initial inoculated density of T. tabacci. The relationship between cumulative insect days (CID) and yield loss (%) of welsh onion was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL and ET of T. tabacci on welsh onion were estimated at 24 and 20 CID per plant, respectively. By the results of the experiment in the late cultivation periods of welsh onion (about 120d after transplanting), the welsh onion biomass was also significantly different inoculation thrips densities to welsh onion. The EIL and ET were calculated as 35 and 28 thrips per welsh onion plant. Until a more elaborate EIL-model is developed, the present result may be useful for T. tabacci management during the cultivations of welsh onion.

        Occurrence of Japanese gall-forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi was surveyed from 143 orchards at 11 cities or counties in 6 provinces, Korea from 2008 to 2009. Occurrence of P. diospyrosi was not observed from Jeju (4 persimmon orchards) in Jeju-do and Wanju (12 persimmon orchards) in Jeollabuk-do. However, P. diospyrosi occurred newly in the orchards in Sanchung, Gyeongsangnam-do and in Gangreung, Gangwon-do. Rate of damaged orchards by P. diospyrosi in Gumi, Mungyeong, Sangju and Euseong in Gyeongsangbuk-do (73.3%) was higher than that of in Gyeongsangnam-do or Youngdong areas in Chungcheongbuk-do. A maximum rate of damaged trees by P. diospyrosi was 23.5% in Gumi, while the damage was lower in Sancheong and Jinju representing 0.2 and 1.6%, respectively. Rate of damaged leaves by P. diospyrosi was the highest in Sangju (0.12%). P. diospyrosi occurred between N35°07′50″ and 35°51′24″ and between E127°38′36″ to 128°53′02″. Persimmon orchards close to mountain were more damaged by P. diospyrosi. Edge parts of persimmon orchards were more damaged by P. diospyrosi than inner parts, especially in orchards close to mountain. Also, the middle and lower parts of tree canopy were more damaged by P. diospyrosi than the upper parts of canopy.

        By releasing predatory mite, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, with 25 individuals per cucumber plant in a commercial greenhouse (1,600 ㎡), the population of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), was kept under the economic threshold level. The initial thrips population of 18.3 individuals per leaf decreased to 2.1 individuals per leaf after four weeks, while the number of A. swirskii reached to 16.6 individuals per leaf. It was also observed that at a point where the thrips occurred in high density of about 34.3 individuals per leaf, A. swirskii population built up on the lower part of cucumber plant first, but as time passed the predatory mites moved upward to the top of the plant and aggregated.

        Cage experiments by artificial infestations with different initial densities of Frankliniella occidentalis were conducted to analyze damages and develop control thresholds of F. occidentalis on greenhouse eggplant in 2005 and on greenhouse sweet pepper in 2007. In the eggplant experiment, the infestations of F. occidentalis resulted in direct damage on fruit surface and non-marketable fruits which had several thin or thick lines or bleaching patches on the surface. F. occidentalis adults were frequently found on the flowers of eggplants, while nymphs were mainly observed on leaves. The fruit yield of eggplants was not significantly different among experimental plots with different initial density of F. occidentalis. Relationship between % non-marketable fruits among harvested fruits of eggplant and sticky trap catches of F. occidentalis (no. thrips/trap/week) at two weeks before the harvest showed a positive correlation. Using the estimated relationship, the control threshold of F. occidentalis on greenhouse eggplant was estimated at 10 adults per week at two weeks before the harvest when 5% of non-marketable fruit was applied for the gain threshold. In the experiment of sweet pepper, the direct damage by F. occidentalis was observed on the fruit surface and calyx, and the marketable grade of the damaged fruits decreased. The significant yield loss of marketable fruits was found in plots with high initial introduced-densities. There was a high relationship between thrips density and percentage of damaged fruits. Assuming 5% yield loss (non-marketable fruit) for the gain threshold, the control threshold of F. occidentalis on greenhouse sweet pepper was 4.8 adults per trap and 0.9 individuals per flower at two weeks before harvest.

        Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis(Perg.), is one of the major pests of lettuce, Lactuca sativa. To develop the economic thresholds for western flower thrips on lettuce, the thrips was inoculated into two types of lettuce, green deeply lobed leaf lettuce which was harvested every week and red frilled & crinkled leaf lettuce which was harvested one time, with a density of 0, 1, 3, 7, 10 thrips per one lettuce after planting 1 week and 3 weeks at the plastic house in 2006, and 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 thrips per one lettuce after planting 1 week in 2007. There was close correlation between the initial thrips density and the marketable quantity of lettuce : y = -155.36x + 3564.7, r2=0.9724('06), y = -167.82x + 3474.5, r2=0.8897('07) in the green deeply lobed leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 1 week, y = -109.65x + 3549.1, r2=0.9384('06) in the green deeply lobed leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 3 weeks, y = -197.09x + 3334.9, r2=0.9707('06), y = -244.08x + 3425.9, r2=0.8914('07) in the red frilled & crinkled leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 1 week, y = -101.07x + 3457.6, r2=0.7334('06) in the red frilled & crinkled leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 3 weeks.
