        The purpose of this study was to investigate the Maillard reaction–related physicochemical properties of three maize varieties (Kwangpyeongok, Sinhwangok2ho and Gangdaok) after roasting them for different times (0, 15, 25, 40, and 55 minutes). The Maillard reaction is a non-enzymatic browning reaction involving reducing sugars and amino compounds. The content of reducing sugar, the causative agent of the Maillard reaction, decreased as roasting time increased. Gangdaok showed the lowest reducing sugar content of 1.04 mg/g after 55 minutes of roasting. In the elapsed roasting time, chromaticity ‘L’ and ‘b’ values decreased. At 55 minutes of roasting, wherein the Maillard reaction occurred most actively, Gangdaok showed the lowest ‘L’ value of 56.37 and the highest ‘a’ value of 7.60. Gangdaok had superior conditions for inducing the Maillard reaction compared to other varieties, and it is consider that 'flint–type', an endosperm characteristic, may have been the influencing agent. This study detected a total of 52 types of volatile aroma compounds (VACs), of which 28 were produced after roasting. Of the total VACs detected, 2-Formyl-5-methylfuran and 2-Furancarboxaldehyde accounted for 43.8~45.5% and have been confirmed to be the major VACs present in roasted maize. Most of the correlations between the Maillard reaction–related characteristics showed high correlation coefficients.

        밀은 세계 3대 주요 작물이지만 우리나라는 대부분 수입에 의존하고 있으며, 자급률이 1%도 도달하지 못한 실정이다. 국내 밀 품종은 40여 종 이상으로 지속적으로 개발되고 있으며, 품종마다 용도와 농업적 특성이 달라 목표 형질에 맞는 적절한 품종을 선택하여 재배하는 것이 중요하다. 품종을 정확하고 빠르게 판별하기 위해선 분자 마커 기술이 필요하다. 분자 마커는 생육 환경과 시기에 영향을 받지 않고 다양한 품종을 신속하고 정확하게 구분할 수 있어 유전적 변이성, 농업 형질 등을 분석하기에 유용하다. 본 연구는 기존에 보고된 국내 밀 32품종에 대한 SCAR (Sequence Characterized Amplified Region) 판별 마커를 재검정하여 재현성이 높은 마커를 선별하였으며, 기존에 검정되지 않은 국내 밀 9품종에 추가 적용하여 비교분석하였다. 15개의 마커 세트 중 6개의 마커가 재현성과 정확도가 높은 것으로 확인되었고, 최종적으로 국내 41품종 중 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12번 마커를 이용하여 다홍, 금강, 밀성, 조은, 수강, 한백, 조광, 영광을 판별할 수 있었다. 또한, 4번 마커를 통한 증폭산물의 염기서열 분석을 통해 SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism)를 발굴하여 ‘올밀’에 대한 새로운 품종 판별 마커인 SdHRM1과 SdHRM2를 개발하여 HRM (High Resolution Melts) 분석을 시행하여 육안으로 판단하기 어려운 SNP를 정확하게 판별할 수 있었다. 품종간의 SNP를 활용한 품종 마커 기술은 다양한 농업형질에 적용할 수 있으며, 분자 육종 프로그램에 실질적인 도움이 되는데 큰 기여를 할 것으로 사료된다.

        Since the first development of the high-yield variety ‘Tongil’ that led to the self-sufficiency of rice production in Korea, plant architecture has improved steadily to increase yield components. The purpose of this study was to analyze the chronicle shift of agronomic traits of high-yield rice, to provide future breeding goals. The culm length increased sharply from 65 cm in the 1970s to 80 cm in the 1990s, and then decreased slightly to 77 cm in the 2010s. The panicle length increased continuously from 22.8 cm in the 1990s, to 24.3 cm in the 2010s. The average number of seeds per panicle increased from 118 in the 1970s, to 142 in the 1990s, and decreased continuously to 119 in the 2010s. The ripening ratio increased from 75% in the 1970s to 83% in the 1980s, and decreased to 77% in the 1990s and after that, held steady at 85%. Thousand-grain weight was lowest in the 1980s at 20.9 g and sharply increased to 25.8 g in the 1990s, and decreased continuously to 23.3 g in the 2010s. The production of high-yield varieties increased significantly from the 1970s from 510 kg/10a to 769 kg/10a in the 2010s.

        The purpose of this study was to select some superior soybean varieties adaptable to growth in the northern parts of the Korean peninsula, and to identify the suitable growing regions of soybean in North Korea. Soybean varieties from South Korea were evaluated with the Chinese locally cultivated varieties as check varieties at two locations, Donggang City of Lianing Province, and at Longjing City of Jilin Province, 2017-2019. A total of 100 soybean varieties from South Korea and three Chinese check varieties were evaluated based on ecological adaptability, and a total of 18 varieties including ‘Suwon 212’ from the Longjing test site as well as a total of 59 genotypes the Donggang test site, were selected for further evaluation in the first experiment year. A total of 12 promising soybean varieties at Longjing and 15 varieties at Donggang that were selected from the previous year, were evaluated at the same sites for ecological adaptability as well as productivity in the second experiment year. A total of nine promising soybean varieties were selected at the test sites, respectively. The nine varieties at each site that were selected from the previous year for the production capacity including flowering date, degree of lodging, yield potential, and disease resistance, were reviewed to evaluate at both sites in the last experiment year. Finally, a total of eight superior varieties, including four at the Longjing site (‘Seonnogkong’, ‘Dajinputkong’, ‘Danweonkong’ and ‘Sinpaldalkong 2’) and the other four at the Donggang site (‘Iksan 13’, ‘Seonnogkong’, ‘Gangil’ and ‘Yeonpung’) were selected. The yield potential of four outstanding soybean varieties selected at the Longjin site was 1.5-2.6t/ha, and that of the other four at the Donggang site was 2.1-2.7t/ha.

        The purpose of this study was to breed a variety of stable productivity and high storage characteristics of white Hypsizygus marmoreus, which has high demand at domestic and global market due to a low bitter taste and the preference for white species. Accordingly, ‘Baekmaru’ was bred by hybridizing brown and white cap color species and backcrossing with white species. The ‘Baekmaru’ variety was bred by crossbreeding the brown and white species and backcrossing the white species. Through repeated cultivation of ‘Baekmaru’, a variety with a low contamination rate was selected when culturing the spawn for stable cultivation. As a results of demonstration test, the yield of ‘Baekmaru’ was 14% higher than that of the commercial variety. In addition, among the fruiting body characteristics of ‘Baekmaru’, diameter and thickness of the pileus were 16.43±15.27mm and 6.46±0.58mm, which were slightly higher than the commercial variety, and the hardness was 2.69±0.89N for the pileus and 3.09±0.89N for the stipe. The shelf life showed less change in thickness and color of pileus compared to commercial variety. The hardness of pileus of 'Baekmaru' was maintained in the range of 3.5 to 4.0N in the 4oC and 4oC and 20oC mixed treatment until 30 days of storage, and was higher than that of the commercial variety. Therefore, it was suggested to be excellent in storability.

        To develop mushroom varieties for cultivating at low temperature on oak logs, a strain with a low fruiting body generation temperature was crossed with Di-mon to select for a line with excellent properties. Selection was followed by cultivation testing. From these studies, Heunghwa 1ho was identified. The optimum temperature for cultivating Heunghwa 1ho, was 13.3oC. The fruiting temperature range was 6.4~20.2oC, identical to that of the parent strain. Growth at 25oC for 7 days achieved optimal mycelial growth of 61.9±2.10 mm, superior to growth of the parent strain at this temperature. The cap shape of Heunghwa 1ho was convex, cap diameter was 57.8±8.31 mm, and cap color was brown. Heunghwa 1ho showed similar genetic traits to those of the parental strain. However, dry weight (20.1 kg/m3) and cap diameter and color are superior to those of the parent strain. The 3 year fresh oak mushroom yield was 113.8 kg/m3, superior to the respective yields of the parent strains JMI 10047 and JMI 90021 (92.5 kg/m3 and 66.4 kg/m3).

        This study was conducted to diversify the cultivation of mushroom items and develop a competitive variety of Hypsizigus marmoreus. We focused on developing Hypsizigus marmoreus with lower bitterness, likable shape, and high yield. We have collected and tested characteristics of genetic resources from domestic and abroad since 2019. Breeding (2019), characterization (2020), productivity test (2021), and farm demonstration test (2021) have been sequentially conducted. We bred the new variety ‘Yunseul’ with unique traits. The optimal temperature for mycelial and fruit body growth were 22–25oC and 15– 18oC, respectively. It was similar to the control variety (Mangadak-2Ho) in the pileus form (hemispherical shape) and the cultivation period. However, it was thinner and longer than the control variety with the pileus diameter, thickness, stipe diameter, and length being 19.9 mm, 7.0 mm, 9.4 mm, and 86.3 mm, respectively. The effective number of fruit bodies was 47.8 in bottle cultivation, which was more than that of the control variety. The yield was 197.4 g/bottle (1,100 cc), which was 30% higher than the yield of the control variety, 151.9 g/bottle (1,100 cc). The parent and control varieties were also incubated alongside the new variety. The somatic incompatibility line was distinct. The band pattern in the mycelial DNA PCR reaction was different from that of the parent and control varieties, confirming the hybrid species.

        This study was conducted to reduce the phenomenon of biased cultivation and to pursue the diversification of mushroom items. We focused on developing Sparassis latifolia varieties with a short cultivation period, stable pinheading, and a high yield. We have collected and determined the characteristics of genetic resources domestically and abroad since 2016. We bred the unique domestic variety, “Hanyeoul” and the results of this study are as follows. The optimal temperatures for mycelial growth and fruit body growth were 22~25oC and 19~21oC, respectively. The color of the pileus was pale-yellowish white, which was similar to the color of the control variety, “Neoul”. The number of days required for cultivation was 125 for bottle cultivation and 98~102 for bag cultivation, which was shorter than the number of days required for the control variety. Bottle cultivation took 39 days shorter for the new variety than the control variety. The fruiting body of the new variety was similar in size or larger than that of the control variety. The pinheading rate was more than 90% in bottle cultivation and bag cultivation, which was more stable than pinheading in the control variety. The yield was 79.1 g/bottle (1,100 cc) for bottle cultivation, which was 22.6% higher than the yield of the control variety, and 641.1~689.5 g/bag (2.6 kg) for bag cultivation, which 5.8~10.4% higher than yield of the control variety.

        본 연구과제는 아시아지역 AFACI(Asian Food & Agriculture Cooperation Initiative) 회원 13개국을 대상으로 토마토 또는 고추 품종육성 기술을 지원하기 위해 수행 되었다. AFACI 회원국 별 채소 육종 및 종자 생산, 가공, 유통 기술 수준 차이가 크다. 라오스, 미얀마, 캄보디아 등의 회원국에서는 자가 종자 생산이 어려워 필 요 종자의 70~80%를 다른 나라에서 수입하여 활용하고 있다. AFACI 회원국들의 자가 종자 생산기술 향상을 통한 자체 종자 생산을 지원하기 위해 회원국들의 요 청을 받아 고추 또는 토마토 작목의 품종육성 기술지원을 수행하였다. 회원국에서 보유하고 있는 다양한 재래종 자원들의 수집, 평가 및 선발과 세계채소센터에서 육성한 자원들을 공급받아 육종 재료로 활용하였다. 본 과제는 2019년 11월부터 2022년 10월까지 1단계 과정을 통해 회원국별로 다양한 성과들을 창출하고 있다. 효율적인 기술지원을 위해 세계채소센터 전문가들을 활용하여 육종 기술과 재료 들을 공급하였다. 2단계에서는 1단계에서 확보된 다양한 자원들을 활용한 우수 고 정종 품종 등록과 일대잡종 품종육성 기술을 지원할 계획이다. 육성된 품종들은 국가별 품종 등록 절차에 따라 품종보호출원 및 농가 보급을 추진할 계획이다. 1 단계에서는 코로나 19로 인한 대면 교육이 불가능하여 국내 종자회사들과의 소통 이 어려웠다. 하지만 2단계에서는 대면 교육 기회를 확대하고, 국내 채소 종자 업 체와 회원국의 연구원들 간의 소통을 확대하여 국내 종자 기업들의 해외 진출에 도 기여 할 수 있도록 노력할 계획이다.

        This study compared the physicochemical and gelatinization properties of naked barley, tetrastichum barley, and waxy barley. Compared to tetrastichum barley and waxy barley, naked barley had shorter and rounder grains with a 1.43 length/ width ratio. Tetrastichum barley had lower crude protein, crude lipid, and crude ash content and higher amylose content compared to naked barley and waxy barley. The L, a, b color values of waxy barley were significantly higher than those of naked barley and tetrastichum barley. The water absorption index (WAI) and the water soluble index (WSI) were highest in waxy barley. The X-ray diffraction pattern was type A in all samples, and the peak intensity was highest in waxy barley. The maximum viscosity, cooling viscosity, breakdown, and setback of amylogram properties were the highest in tetrastichum barley. The thermal properties through the differential scanning calorimeter showed that the waxy barley had higher values of the onset, peak, conclusion temperature and enthalpy (?H). In conclusion, the variety of barley influenced the physicochemical and gelatinization properties, which could be important factors in the manufacture of processed foods. These results would thus useful inputs for the manufacturing of these foods using barley.

        Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most popular horticultural crops cultivated globally. Since the 1950s, the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) of Rural Development Administration (RDA) has been conducting research on developing Korean tomato cultivars. Recently, the objectives of breeding have been diversified according to the rapidly changing market trends. To meet such demands, various cultivars with distinct characteristics have been made: rootstock tomato, ornamental tomato, sweet cherry tomato, and virus resistant tomato. In 2022, a total of 20 cultivars were registered for variety protection in the Korea Seed and Variety Service (KSVS) and two cultivars with high temperature tolerance have been under field trials for application. In this paper, the breeding history and major characteristics of eight representative tomato cultivars are discussed. Since each tomato has its own valuable feature, they are expected to be used in diverse places from garden to farm.

        This experiment was conducted to investigate the change in the productivity of Italian ryegrass seeds according to the inter-row spacing in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) ‘Green Call’ variety was sown in Jinju, Gyeongnam in the fall of 2020 with three inter-row spacings (20, 30 and 40 cm). The experiment was arranged a randomized block design with three replications. The ryegrass was sown on October 17, 2020, and the harvest was on May 31, about 60 days from the first heading stage. There was no difference among treatments with an average of April 27th in heading stage. Plant height was significantly longer at 30 cm seeding interval and the shortest in 20 cm treatment. The length of the spike was the longest in the 40 cm seeding interval, and the number of seeds per spike was the highest in the 20cm seeding interval, but there was no significant difference among treatments. The seed yield was the highest at the 20 cm sowing interval (2,180 kg/ha), and decreased as the spacing increased. The dry matter content of seeds and straw was found to be 44.90% and 45.51% on average, and there was no significant difference among treatments. The amount of remaining straw after harvesting was found to be 7,506 kg/ha on average on DM basis, and was high at the 20 cm seeding interval. In view of the above results, it was found that it is most advantageous to sow at intervals of 20 cm when producing Italian ryegrass seeds through autumn sowing in the southern region.
