The company's most important goal is to generate revenue. Managers want to lower prices, improve quality, and increase productivity. So many innovative activities have been developed. Businesses must perform management innovation. But many companies fail due to the difficulties of innovation. POSCO developed QSS with advantages such as TPS(Toyota Production System), TPM(Total Quality Management), Six Sigma, and IE(Industrial Engineering). The KOREA government spread QSS activities to enterprises. QSS activities are applied to manufacturing companies through training and activities, and basic capacities, maintenance capabilities, and improvement capacities are evaluated before and after the evaluation. An empirical study on BPR of companies through QSS innovation.

This paper suggests a procedure to define business process improvement (BPI) projects with analysis results based on the cause-and-effect chain. The procedure developed in this paper focuses on eliminating root causes of business problems resulted from abnormal events occurred in business process executions. First, we develop three criteria used to make clusters of the root causes where a cluster of root causes will be eliminated together by a BPI project defined based on the cluster. Second, we develop a method to formulate desired expectations from the BPI project. Also, we suggest a method to calculate the relative importance of the BPI projects that help a BPI organization determine priorities of them. We illustrate the procedure and the methods with some examples for the domestic mail delivery process in the postal service industry.

In this paper we explore competition as a firm process, rather than as a background economic variable. We contribute by refining firm competition as a process of goal seeking within a context of many actors. First we consider past research on structural and socially constructed competition. We develop a research framework inside relational time, based on the priority of a firm’s line of action, the direction of a firm’s activities, whether primarily towards the customer or first focusing on the activities of another firm. We explore the theoretical distinctions between non-competitive, competitive and rivalry firm activity through an analysis of exporters and importers of fine wine to Denmark from South Australia. We distinguish firm competition from other more complex interactions in a network context. We conclude with managerial implications and the opportunities for future research. The concept of competition in the business-to-business literature shifts meaning depending on the context. The meaning seems to extend along a continuum from rivalry (Porac, Thomas, Wilson, Paton & Kanfer 1995) to coopetition (Bengtsson & Kock 2000). According to McNulty (1968, 639) “There is probably no concept in all of economics that is at once more fundamental and pervasive, yet less satisfactorily developed, than the concept of competition.” In the business-to-business literature competition is defined as structural, where firms seek the same customer or goal (Macdonald & Ryall 2004), or competition is regarded as socially constructed (Porac et al. 1995). Competition is also considered as an interaction process undertaken over time between firms (cf Easton & Araujo 1994; Turnbull, Ford & Cunningham 1996). We pursue only an understanding of the competition process based on a single firm’s activities. Our approach is to focus on this simple form and develop a process based framework to understand competition. We see this as a single step, the first advance towards a framework for analyzing cooperation and competition together (Jarillo 1988).

In this study, we develop a method for analyzing business process based on the event-driven process chain (EPC) model. The method consists of five stages such as identifying abnormal events, finding causes for the abnormal events and problems caused by the abnormal events, making cause-and-effect chains, drawing root-cause map, and defining improvement areas. We illustrate how to apply the method with some examples for the domestic registered mail delivery process.

To adapt to a rapidly changing business environment, introduction of new management techniques and innovative activities are crucial. In the case of small and medium companies, the compensation for scarce management resources and sustainable development can be obtained from advantage of management consulting. In this study, we propose the enterprise process evaluation model for small and medium business consulting, which can deploy the process improvement activities with considering the process maturity level within an organization. The process evaluation area of proposed Small and Medium Business, Staged Maturity Model (SMB-SMM) consists of four following parts: supply management, demand management, business management, and research and development (R&D) management. For each area, we set goals and also define the practices to achieve their goals respectively. By applying the SMB-SMM model to the small and medium sized companies, the process maturity level can be defined. And then to overcome the gap between the goals and evaluation results, the customized management consulting activities can be drawn from the predefined consulting approaches from the SMB-SMM.

Business processes are often of long duration, and include internal worker's decision making, which makes business processes to be exposed to many exceptional situations. These properties of business processes makes it difficult to guarantee successful termination of business processes at the design phase. The behavioral properties of business processes mainly depends on the data aspects of business processes. To formalize the data aspect of process modeling, this paper proposes a graph-based model, called Data Dependency Graph (DDG), constructed from dependency relationships specified between business data. The paper also defines a mechanism of describing a set of mapping rules that generates a process model semantically equivalent to a DDG, which is accomplished by allocating data dependencies to component activities.

Nowadays, Internet-based businesses is activated in various organizations. In most of distribution and manufacturing companies, the main current of internet businesses is on-line sales (B2C: Business-to-Customer) centering around internet shopping. Most of theses businesses applied contents-centered and customer-oriented methodology for implementing internet business system(IBS). Also, recently, Introduction of Internet-based VAN(Value Added Network) systems and e-Procurement systems of purchase fields between parent companies and suppliers are proliferated for an efficiency of business and a reduction of transaction cost. These systems used methods of re-constructing the existing legacy systems into Internet-based systems. This paper proposes a customer-oriented and process-based methodology that simultaneously considers customer requirements and business processes of operational systems in order to implement an Internet business system. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology, we applied and implemented an Internet business system for sales of A/S (After Service) spare parts and services on the object of the "H" company of manufacturing ship engines, which is a make-to-order corporation. As a result, This paper showed an effective applicability of Internet-based e-business on A/S business processes in order to improve a service quality for customer satisfaction in manufacturing companies.
