This thesis mainly deals with the meaning of single eaves buildings which have Chunyeo with Sarae. As a rule, building with single eaves does not construct Sarae. But we can find some special buildings using Chunyeo with Sarae in the corners of the eaves. At this time, many people say that lower part of the member so called Alchunyeo, and upper part of the member so called Chunyeo. And they also say that the using of Alchunyeo was caused by the shortage of timber which can make Chunyeo properly. As a result, single eaves buildings using Chunyeo with Sarae in the corners of the eaves were not caused by the shortage of timber. That kinds of buildings were made by the hierarchy of building. Single eaves buildings with Sarae have lower rank than double eaves buildings, and also have higher rank than those without Sarae. And we have to say that lower part of the member is Chunyeo, and upper part of the member is Sarae.

This study is a comparative study on a cookbook published in 1900s titled「Jusikbangmun」, one of collections of the National Central Library, along with other cookery books in Joseon Dynasty in the late 1800s to early 1900s. 「Jusikbangmun」consists of 51 recipes, including 45 kinds of staple foods and six kinds of brews. More than 60% of the recipes deal with staple dishes and side-dishes, whereas the rest deal with ceremonial dishes and drinking. The 「Jusikbangmun」applies a composite method of cooking from boiling and steaming to seasoning with oil spices. The ingredients are largely meats rather than vegetables, which is distinguished other cookery books in the Joseon Dynasty. Only 「Jusikbangmun」deals with such peculiar recipes as ‘Kanmagitang’, ‘Bookyengsumyentang’, ‘Jeryukpyen’, ‘Yangsopyen’, and ‘Dalgihye’. It is estimated that 「Jusikbangmun」was published around the 1900s based on findings that 「Jusikbangmun」is more similar with「Buinpilgi」and「Joseonyorijebeop」in the early 1900s than with「Kyuhapchongseo」, 「Siyijenseo」and「Jusiksieui」in 1800s. Therefore,「Jusikbangmun」is a valuable resource, we can use understand the food culture of the late Joseon period.

This study explored the Jeollajwasuyeong Dongheon in the Late Joseon dynasty and its findings are as follows. Buildings in Jeollajwasuyeong were completed since the mid-18th century. They formed areas based on functions and were largely classified into two areas. The buildings within Yeongseong included Gaeksa (guesthouse), Dongheon(government office), Hyangcheong(advisory organ), Jungyeong(military camp), Guncheong (county office), Gongbang(workroom), and Changgo(warehouse). There were also buildings for low-ranking government officials. The central part of Jeollajwasuyeong was the areas of Gaeksa and Dongheon. Gaeksa was iconic area where local governors served King and had 75 Jinnamgwan Guesthouses and 3 inner gates. Those were measured off by separate walls. The Dongheon area was located in the northeast of Gaeksa. There were three gates such as Wanyeongru, Gongsamun, and Jeongbyeonmun at the entry area, which were also divided by walls like Gaeksa. Unjuheon (Dongheon) was at the center of the area where Gyeolseungdang, Mugwonjae, Naea, Chaekbang, and Gongsu were built. Outside the area, Baekwadang(used as Bijangcheong), Jinhyulgo, and Byeonggo were composed of part of the Dongheon area. Most of the buildings in Dongheon seemed to be repaired since 1664. It was difficult to locate the area of previous Dongheon. In particular, Jinnamgwan was first built in 1599 and destroyed by fire in 1716. In 1718, the building was reconstructed and shared historic denominator with Unjuheon before 1858 and reconstructed Unjuheon in 1869. It was found that Unjuheon was reconstructed more than at least three times, which was the central building in Dongheon. The buildings including Gyeolseungdang, Mugwonjae, and Baekwadang in the area were not existed within Jeollajwasuyeong and were reconstructed more than once and maintained until the early 1900s.

Finding the origin of life-centrism in East Asia, especially a longevity, you can find a harmony of the nature and mankind in Ancient Chinese myth and rarity about a idea of afterlife. In Chinese important trend, Confucianism and Taoism, their attitude to life shows a life-centrism. Confucianists' final aim at life is remaning their name in real life, so they don't care about afterlife. They put emphasis on the immortal fame and the happiness, comport in life. Taoists think the lifespan is the absolute objective because they believe the penalty for faults is lifetime shortening. The Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity is a group of the long life stuff symbolize the longevity. The first record of them appeared in the royal paintings in Goryeo Dynasty. These symbols used in the folding screen, windows and doors in palace and expand to ordinary people because of the development of commerce after the 18th century. After that, symbols have widespread popular support so appear in the folding screen, woodcraft and embroidery. The Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity describes the hermit's world, it contains the real organisms of sky, underwater and land. Symbols are the combination of objection to life, desire of longevity and transcendence in life. They show us the concentration of real life.

Nakseonjae in Changdeokgung Palace was established at The King Hunjong’s 13rd year (1847), the mid-19th century. It was constructed for own rests of King Hunjong and the residence of Kyungbin (king’s concubines), and is showing features of upper-class houses from several points such as rustic architectural types by getting out of authoritative aspects as king’s shelter space within the palace, block and floor distribution that separated spaces for men and women, simplicity in structures and styles, and non-colorful painting etc. This study aims at tracing on which architectural types did the upper-class houses within Hanyang (modern Seoul) at late Joseon Dynasty have and what was characteristics of Nakseonjae. The resemblance between Nakseonjae and the upper-class houses was very little differences from scale aspects, and floor plan shapes of Anchae (women’s quarters) and Sarangchae (men’s quarters) were followed basic common styles. Also, resemblance could be confirmed in the structural styles too. Characteristics of Nakseonjae are showing apparent differences from clearance compositions such as hall configuration etc. Nakseonjae was king’s dwelling place, and spaces for house’s collateral functions such as kitchen, stable, and warehouse etc together with shrine were unnecessary, and such places were substituted into servants’ quarters for assisting the Royal family. In detailed structural styles, column’s size was larger 3cm or more than the upper-class houses, and its height was higher to the degree of 30~60cm. Besides, formality as king’s shelter space was raised more in decorating aspects, and Nakseonjae was implemented by getting architectural influences from Qing Dynasty of China. This study induced features of Hanyang’s upper-class houses at the 19th century by supplementing distribution and space configurations at existing cases of Seoul and Gyeonggi area together with house diagrams having been collected by Gaokdohyung (site and floor plan) of Jangseogak Library, and confirmed resemblances and differences with Nakseonjae, that is, features of Nakseonjae. Through the result, this study judges a fact that architecture of Nakseonjae seemed to be affected from conveniences of upper-class houses within Hanseong, and also architectural styles and distribution types of Nakseonje would give influences to the upper-class houses.

Since the 17th century, the society of Joseon dynasty belongs to a period of rapid transition in many fields. As the building is a result to be produced on the basis of a society and economy, the general transition in a society is to be reflected into a process of building construction. Especially, a study on the material supply system of economic base in a process of building construction is one of very important factors in an understanding or estimate of a building. On the premise, this paper is to examine the supply system of iron materials and the tools in the construction of the government managed buildings in the late of Joseon dynasty on a viewpoint of productivity. Construction reports and other documents in those days are examined for the study. Following conclusions have been reached through the study. 1) The general supply method of iron materials for a large-scale government construction was based on 'byulgong', that is, a kind of tribute. 2) Various methods were selected in the supply method of iron materials for government use in the late of Joseon dynasty. The priority order of choice in its government policy was put on an easiness of amount security, on a minimum of expenditure, and on an efficiency of construction execution. 3) The manufacturing technique of weaponry was used in the production method of iron materials and the tools for government use. The cooperation of the official, the army, and the merchant had improved the manufacturing technique of building construction.

This study examines the joint and splice of wooden structure at Geunjeongjeon Hall of Gyengbok Palace, which was constructed in the late Joseon Dynasty. The scope of the study is on the part of columns, the bracket sets, and the frame structure. This research also deals with the relationship between vortical load and horizontal load. Firstly, the examination of the joint and splice methods between the pillar and penetrating ties is on the joint and splice methods of the outer and corner. Through the investigation, it is verified that the joint methods between pillar and penetrating tie on the outer and corner pillars is the method of Sagal joints(cross joints, 사개맞춤). Joints used between pillar and penetrating tie are dovetailed tenon joints, between columns and Anchogong(안초공), between columns and Choikgong(초익공) are tenon joint(장부맞춤). Secondly, the examination of the joint and splice methods of the bracket set is on that of Salmi and Cheomcha(첨차), and Salmi and Janghyeo(장혀). Joints used between Salmi and Cheomcha, Salmi and Janghyeo are halved joint, and between each Janghyeo are stepped dovetailed splice. It is Cheomcha that is used the Jujang-Cheomcha(주장첨차) on center line. Therefore it is connected with each bracket set, which gets to is the strong system, easy and convenient on the construction of that. Thirdly, the frame structure of wooden architecture in royal palace is consist of purlins and beams, Janghyeo(장혀, timber under purlin), tall columns, king posts, etc. Through the investigation, it is verified that the joint and splice methods between purlins and beams are used with the methods of Sungeoteok joint(숭어턱맞춤). It is verified that the joint and splice methods between beams and high columns are used with methods of mortise and tenon joint(장부맞춤), is highly related with tensile force. To reduce the separation of parts, sangi(산지) and tishoi(띠쇠) are used as a counterproposal, which were generally used for architecture in royal Palaces in the late Joseon Dynasty and continued to be used until these days common wooden architecture.

In this study, the characteristics of a horizontal sundial from the Joseon Dynasty were investigated. Korea’s Treasure No. 840 (T840) is a Western-style horizontal sundial where hour-lines and solar-term-lines are engraved. The inscription of this sundial indicates that the latitude (altitude of the north celestial pole) is 37° 39´, but the gnomon is lost. In the present study, the latitude of the sundial and the length of the gnomon were estimated based only on the hour-lines and solar-termlines of the horizontal sundial. When statistically calculated from the convergent point obtained by extending the hourlines, the latitude of this sundial was 37° 15´ ± 26´, which showed a 24´ difference from the record of the inscription. When it was also assumed that a convergent point is changeable, the estimation of the sundial’s latitude was found to be sensitive to the variation of this point. This study found that T840 used a vertical gnomon, that is, perpendicular to the horizontal plane, rather than an inclined triangular gnomon, and a horn-shaped mark like a vertical gnomon is cut on its surface. The length of the gnomon engraved on the artifact was 43.1 mm, and in the present study was statistically calculated as 43.7 ± 0.7 mm. In addition, the position of the gnomon according to the original inscription and our calculation showed an error of 0.3 mm.

We investigated the six remaining Yang-cheon-cheoks (量天尺), which were first described in the Veritable Record of King Sukjong (肅宗實錄). These woodblock sundials from Korea are structurally very similar to a Gyupyo (圭表, gnomon) or an altitude sundial and are light, compact, and portable. The front side of a Yang-cheon-cheok has two holes for styluses and several hour-lines. We compared the intervals of the hour-lines from the originating point of the stylus placement on all Yang-cheon-cheoks and found that two of the relics had the same hour-lines using the standard of the unit of 1 chon (寸). These two were actually the same sundial although the physical size was different. In spite of the lack of time accuracy, we hypothesize that various-sized Yang-cheon-cheoks were made and widely distributed throughout the public in the late Joseon Dynasty.
