        하수기반역학을 이용한 코로나19 감시 결과, 연구기간 (2022년 8월-2023년 8월)동안 울산지역 4곳 하수처리장의 전체 174건 모든 시료에서 코로나바이러스-19가 검출되었 다. 확진자 수와 하수 내 코로나바이러스 농도와의 상관 분석 결과, 높은 상관성이 나타났으며 특히 하수감시가 임 상감시보다 2-3주 앞서 농도가 증가함으로써 조기 인지의 가능성도 볼 수 있었다. 또한 코로나19 변이 분석 결과 역 시 유행 시기별 우세종화된 변이와 비교적 유사하여 변이 예측도 가능하였다. 하수감시가 전국적, 전세계적으로 적용되고 있으며 많은 연구가 국가적 사업으로 진행되고 있 다. 이에 따라, 하수 분석방법 및 분석기기 발전 등의 지 속적 연구 업데이트가 필요하다. 또한 코로나19를 통해 감 염병의 선제적 모니터링 및 유행 예측의 가능성을 확인하 였으므로 다양한 병원체 및 식품·의약품 등에 확대 적용 이 진행 중이다. 따라서 본 연구는 감염병 검출분야에서 더 나아가 하수 내 식품 성분, 활성물질 및 미생물 등의 분석을 통해 지역사회의 식품안전 및 전반적인 위생환경 감시를 위해 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

        This study investigated the potential role of dietary factors associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Koreans. The scoping review method was used to evaluate the studies that utilized the secondary data sets comprising the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). Articles published between 2012 and 2022 were identified using RISS, KISS, DBpia, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases. In all, there were 32 published articles on obesity and 119 on MetS. Obesity research included eight articles on nutrients, 12 on food items/food groups, two on dietary patterns, nine on dietary behavior/eating habits, and one on the dietary index. MetS studies comprised 34 articles on nutrients, 43 on food items/food groups, seven on dietary patterns, 25 on dietary behavior/eating habits, and 10 on the dietary index. Carbohydrates, alcohol, and coffee consumption were the most frequently studied dietary factors for obesity and MetS. The primary areas of study were largely focused on nutrients and food items/food groups. Thus, to overcome the paucity of information on the relationship of dietary patterns and dietary indexes with obesity and MetS, there is a need for further research using the KNHANES and KoGES data sets.

        Recently, there is growing interest in studying the dietary patterns that affect the risk of circulatory system diseases (CSDs). We investigated the relationship between CSDs and dietary patterns through a follow-up study in Korea (2001-2016). The participants of this study were obtained from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). This study was a large community-based cohort study (the Ansan-Ansung areas) conducted to assess the effects of various factors, especially diet, on the onset of chronic diseases among the Korean population aged 40-69 yrs. Baseline data were collected from 2001 to 2002, and follow-up studies were performed every 2 yrs, with over 7 follow-up studies performed (2015-2016). Three dietary patterns were identified using factor analysis: “vegetable and seafood (men)/soup and stew (women)” pattern, “sweet foods and breads-rice cake” pattern, and “multigrain rice and cooked white rice” pattern. None of the dietary patterns were significantly associated with the risk of CSDs in either men or women. Our follow-up study is meaningful as it investigated whether the dietary patterns of individuals according to sex affects the development of CSDs.

        In the 21st century, the risk of the exotic pest being invaded is increasing due to the rise of trading activities. Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), has been considered to very destructive invader as it is highly intrusive and has a wide host range. In this study, 2,299 samples were collected from 88 locations in 12 countries by quarantine and investigation. Among them, 608 individuals (including B. correcta) were used for COI DNA barcoding analysis based on Neighbor Joining method with P-distance model. Population genetics analysis was conducted for 510 individuals selected from 47 locations of 12 Southeast Asian countries using 15 microsatellite loci. The barcoding analysis resulted in that any clade was not clustered according to a geographical isolation but indicated geographically mixed populations. Population genetics analysis showed shared genetic structure between neighboring countries across borders. Genetic structure of most Korean quarantine groups was more similar to that of Taiwan, China and Thailand in the order of appearance than other countries.

        Traditional wastewater research mainly focuses on 1) estimating the amount of waste entering sewage treatment facilities, 2) evaluating the treatment efficiency of sewage facilities, 3) investigating the role of sewage treatment effluent as a point source, and 4) designing and managing sewage treatment facilities. However, since wastewater contains a variety of chemical and biological substances due to the discharge of human excreta and material used for daily living into it, the collective constituents of wastewater are likely a reflection of a community’s status. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), an emerging and promising field of study that involves the analysis of substances in wastewater, can be applied to monitor the state of a defined community. WBE provides opportunities for exploiting indicators in wastewater to fulfill various objectives. The data analyzed under WBE are those pertaining to selected natural and anthropogenic substances in wastewater that are a result of the discharge of metabolic excreta, illicit or legal drugs, and infectious pathogens into the wastewater. This paper reviews recent progress in WBE and addresses current challenges in the field. It primarily discusses several representative applications including the investigation of drug consumption across different communities and the management of community disease and health. Finally, it summarizes established indicators for WBE.

        Origin of Red imported fire ant (RIFA : Solenopsis invicta) is Central America, a tropical climate region. It has settled in the invasive area, causing various problems. In recent, Solenopsis invicta were discovered in Busan in 2017 and then in 2018 at a construction site in Busan, Pyongtaek, Incheon and in Daegu. This study aims to confirm the origin of invasive colonies of Solenopsis invicta. We tried to test previously developed microsatellite markers so that we establish the tracing protocol for molecular epidemiology of RIFA. We justified 66 microsatellite markers already developed using DNA from the RIFA found in Incheon Harbor. As results, 30 markers were selected to facilitate amplification and fragment analysis.

        According to field surveys between 1998 and 2009, four tomatoinfecting begomovirus species detected in Taiwan were Ageratum yellow vein Hualien virus (AYVHuV), Tomato leaf curl Taiwan virus (ToLCTWV), Tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus (TYLCTHV), and Tomato leaf curl Hsinchu virus (ToLCHsV). After TYLCTHV first detected in 2005, it quickly replaced ToLCTWV in the tomato fields in Taiwan. In 2009, 8% of the positive samples were infected with ToLCTWV, 51% with TYLCTHV and 41% with mixed infection of both viruses. We performed field surveys again in 2015, 2016, and 2018, and we discovered that all symptomatic tomato plants were infected with ToLCTWV and/or TYLCTHV. Altogether, 59% of the positive samples were infected with ToLCTWV, 33% with TYLCTHV and 8% with mixed infection of both viruses. Surprisingly, the positive samples were more infected with ToLCTWV and less infected with TYLCTHV. To confirm the “revenge” of ToLCTWV in tomato fields, we plan to carry out a more extensive field survey in the upcoming year.

        The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), has potential of serious damage to various vegetables or fruits, especially genus of Citrus, such as mandarin orange and tangerine in Korea, where its larvae do damages. Animal and Plant Quarantin Agency of Korea and Animsl Systematics Laboratory of Kunsans National University have collected the samples of oriental fruit fly in East Asian countries, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, China, Cambodia, India Nepal and Laos. To confirm genetic differences and structure of B. dorsalis population samples collected from those countries, we analyzed 192 individuals from 28 locations over 7 countries using 15 microsatellite loci. In total samples, number of different alleles, number of effective alleles and Shannon's Information Index were 6.421±0.364 (standard error, SE), 3.664±0.137 (SE) and 0.902±0.030 (SE), respectively. Grand means (±SE) of observed and expected heterozygosity over all loci and populations were 0.534 (±0.018) and 0.597 (±0.017), respectively. Among all populations, Fst values ranged from 0.016 to 0.705 with averaging 0.194 (±0.026).

        담낭암은 비교적 드문 소화기계 암이다. 여자에서 더 많이 발생하며 지역적, 인종적 발생 빈도의 차이를 보인다. 5년 생 존율이 5% 정도의 예후가 매우 불량한 암이며 최근 담낭절제술의 활발한 시행으로 전 세계적으로는 발생 빈도가 줄어들고 있으나 우리나라는 아직도 발생 빈도가 높은 지역에 속한다. 담석증이 가장 중요한 위험인자이며 담석의 크기가 3 cm 이상일 경우 10배 이상의 상대적 위험도를 보인다. 크기뿐 아니라 담석의 부피와 무게 또한 암 발생과 연관 관계가 있다. 담낭 용종의 경우 10 mm 이상의 크기와 50세 이상일 경우 암 발생 위험성이 증가하여 예방적 담낭절제술을 고려해야 한다. 선근종증의 일부와 황색 육아종성 담낭염에서도 암의 선행 질환으로 작용하거나 혹은 담낭암과의 구분이 어려워 담낭절제술의 적응증이 되며 선천성 담췌관 합류이상 및 석회화 담낭에서도 담낭암의 발생이 증가한다. 그 외에도 장기간의 장티푸스 보균 상태나 비만 등도 고위험군에 속한다. 담낭 암은 조기 발견이 매우 중요하여 담낭암의 위험인자들에 대 한 충분한 이해가 필요하며 고위험을 보이는 환자들에 대한 적절한 전략을 통해 담낭암의 발생을 줄이는 시도가 필요할 것으로 보인다. 또한 향후 위험인자들에 대한 대규모의 다기관의 전향적 연구가 필요하다.

        노로바이러스는 전세계적으로 모든 연령에게 급성 장염을 일으키는 주요 원인체이다. 본 연구는 국내 식품업계의 식품종사자를 대상으로 무증상 노로바이러스 감염의 유행성을 조사하였다. 2,729명의 식품종사자에서 29명 (1.06%)이 무증상 노로바이러스로 확인되었고 이 중 5명 (17.24%)은 노로바이러스 GI 양성이었고 24명(82.76%)은 노로바이러스 GII 양성이었다. 특히 유전자 염기서열 분석과 계통 분석에서 GII-4 유전자형이 가장 유행성이 높은 것으로 나타났으며 많은 수의 무증상 식품종사자는 노로바이러스 GII-4 에 감염되어있었다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과는 무증상 식품종사자가 노로바이러스 감염에 잠재적인 전파 원인일 가능성이 있음을 보여준다. 또한 이러한 결과는 노로바이러스 예방에 대한 식품업체의 교육의 필요성을 강조한다. 무증상 노로바이러스 감염에 더 많은 주 의를 기울여야 할 것이다.

        The Veterinary Epidemiology Division of The Animal, Plant, and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency (QIA) was established in 2002. It is the first governmental organization in the Republic of Korea to be charged with the epidemiological task of managing veterinary public health. In commemorating the previous efforts of this organization, this paper describes the brief history, concept, tools, and approaches of veterinary epidemiology. The mission of veterinary epidemiology, as a leader of 'One Health', to improve the public health status of human and animal is also discussed.

        The epidemiology of reported food-borne disease (FBD) outbreaks from 2001 to 2008 in Korea and Japan were compared in this study. The outbreak rate of FBD in Japan was significantly higher although the average number of patient in each outbreak in Korea was much higher. In both countries, summer was the season when most FBD outbreaks occurred. The comparison study revealed that FBD outbreaks in spring were more frequent in Korea, and outbreaks in winter were more frequent in Japan. Almost half of FBD outbreaks were observed at restaurants in both countries while FBD outbreaks at schools and work-places in Korea were much higher than in Japan. The most frequent cause of bacterial FBDs in Korea was pathogenic Escherichia coli followed by Salmonella species. On the other hand, Campylobacter jejuni was the most frequent source of bacterial FBDs in Japan. Norovirus, which is related to uncontrolled hand hygiene and involvement of ill food workers, was the main cause of viral FBDs in both countries. In conclusion, there are common epidemiological characteristics as well as several differences in FBD outbreaks of Korea and Japan. These are suggested to be originated from the characteristic of climate, food sources, and life styles in two countries. Establishment of stricter control and surveillance system for FBD outbreaks are required for prevention and reduction of FBD outbreaks in both countries.

        For the purpose of disclosing causative factors of traumatic spinal cord injury. the medical record of 429 cases with spinal cord injury which admitted in 46 general hospital and National rehabilitation center located in Seoul, including Sam Yook rehabilitation center and Jung Ang hospital in Kyungi do and occurred in 1995 were analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. This incidence frequency was the highest in the 20th years(31.2%), followed by in the 30th years(23.596) and in the 40th years(l8.9%) in descending order. 2. The incidence ratio between male and female was 4: 1. 3. The leading cause of injury was the highest in traffic accidents(49.2%), followed by falls from elevation(25.2%) and falls on the same leve1(8.4%). 4. Traffic accident mainly occured from 20th years to 40th years and falls from elevation in 50th years. 5. The level of spinal cord injury was the highest in cervical cord(54.8%). followed by the thoracic cord(28.9%) and lumbosacral cord(16.3%). Traffic accidents mainly caused in cervical cord injury and thoracic cord injury whereas lumbosacral cord injury was caused from falls from elevation.

        1981년도 사과 흰빛 썩음병(白腐病)의 발생은 지역에 따라 5%에서 16%에 달하였으며 평균발병 과율은 9%였다. 사과에서 분리한 병원균을 사과, 배, 복숭아, 포도의 잎, 가지, 과실에 상처 접종하였을때 접종 부위에 병반이 형성되었다. 병원균의 영양 생장은 감자설탕 한천배지와 귀리즙 한천배지에서 모두 좋았으며 특히 온도 , pH 4, 당도 의 광조사하에서 가장 양호하였다. 사과의 이병과실은 8월 초순에 포장에서 처음 관찰되었으며 이때의 과실 당도는 9.0%였다. 그 이후 과실의 당도가 증가함에 따라 이병과실의 수도 급격히 증가하였다. 과실의 이병정도와 과일즙내 산도와는 아무런 상관이 없었다. 사과 과실의 이병시기를 과실을 일정기간동안 노출하는 방법으로 포장에서 조사한 결과, 과실의 이병은 과실이 형성되기 시작한 6월초순부터 가능하였다. 과실의 숙기별로 포장에서 과실을 채집하여 실내 유상접종 하였을때 접종 과실은 과실의 숙기와 상관없이 모두 병만을 형성하였다. 포장에서 병 발생 정도를 품종별로 조사한 결과, 골덴데리셔스, 육오가 가장 많이 이병되었고 조나단, 레드데리셔스가 가장 적었으며 아오리, 후지, 인도는 중간이었다.

        콩 모자이크 바이러스계통 SMV-G7의 감염에 의하여 모자이크 병징이 나타나는 함안 품종과 괴저병징이 나타나는 광교를 공시하여 (99평)의 포장 중앙 (1평)에 함안을 파종, 접종한 후 주변 시험구(1평씩 99구)에는 광교를 파종하여 SMV의 발생생태를 조사하였다. 광교에서 SMV 이병주율은 7월 13일에 가장 심하였고 황색수반으로 채집한 진딧물 밀도는 6월 22일에 가장 높게 나타났으며 함안과 인접한 시험구의 SMV 이병주율은 평균 , 포장전체의 이병주율은 평균 로 나타났다. 풍향과 바이러스 이병율을 분석한 결과 SMV의 전파는 바람부는 쪽으로 일정한 gradient를 형성하여 SMV 전파에 중요한 요인으로 나타났다
