        This is a summary of a comparative study of the national policies to foster the agri-food industry implemented by the leading countries of the industry before and after the COVID-19-induced global economic crisis. By comparing the policies of each country, we discovered that key leading countries of the agri-food industry had given up or suspended one-on-one, face-to-face support programs that they had maintained for years, and have started providing financial assistance to companies or self-employed people in relative industries. Korea should implement such decisive policies for the Korean agri-food industry to tackle this unprecedented economic shrink and maintain the competitiveness of the industry. Considering the scale and speed of the spreading of the pandemic, the new policies should be implemented swiftly and boldly.

        World is now shifting from the industrial and information society to the 4th Industrial Revolution in its structure, and new products and services appear in various sectors. The 4th Industrial Revolution changes the entire daily lives in more convenient, safer, and more effective forms. There will be many changes in food industries with combination between intelligent information technologies such as IoT, big data, AI and new technologies such as 3D printing, robotics, and nano-technology, developing more intelligent ones. Intelligent IoT is one of four main basic industries for sustainable growth with future driving force in Korea. Since 2010, food smart distribution researches combining food technologies and ICT have been conducted in Korea, and core original technologies including quality management sensor, intelligent food distribution environment control system, smart warehouse, real-time quality monitoring, etc. Food smart distribution technology is a system converging ICT including sensor tag, sensor network, and LBS and food technologies for safe management of history, quality, and distribution, and it will be applied to food distribution industries, developing the domestic food distribution industries to the world-class level. Recently, IoT has been increasingly introduced into food industries, and development of new convergence technologies and adjustment to technological changes are required, and it is necessary to establish strategies for how to introduce food system based on IoT. As a result of the analysis of frequency of keywords o technological trends by applying text-mining technologies into tremendous amount of unstructured data created by newly convergence technologies between food and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there are eight main keywords including IoT, smart sensor, artificial intelligence(AI), multi-tasking, automatic cognition/discernment, quality management, simplification of distribution, an customer-friendly. It is necessary to make national strategies for R&D. In case of Korea, ICT is the world class, and if it is applied to food industries, it will be available to develop new world-class business models.

        Research and technology has been transforming the agriculture to agribusiness which encompasses all operations with all the connections from faming per se, to manufacture & distribution of production supplies and farm commodities. Further, with the revolutionary development of information technology in the last two decades, we cannot talk about agribusiness process alone without considering the information technology embedded in the artifact, process, and structure. Despite the emergence of precision agriculture (PA) which is supported by IT based innovations which can not only improve efficiency in farming operations but also contribute to environmental sustainability, the adoption of IT among farmers and in agriculture industry are rather low than expected. Thus, Korean government has been seeking to converge IT into food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries to improve the competency of the agribusiness, and much progress has been made. This paper investigated the status quo of the current IT convergence with Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Korea, and further proposed future policy directions.

        The Asian food market has been growing recently, due to the role played by major Asian countries, which include Korea, China, and Japan. This study is purposed to investigate the potential of the food market in these Northeast Asian countries and to suggest future direction for global food companies. For in-depth analysis, this study is limited in scope to the confectionery market and analyzes that market within two frameworks: first, the ‘Market Attractiveness Matrix’ which transforms the ‘BCG Matrix’ to fit into the food market in order to analyze the flow in the Asian confectionery market; and second, analysis of the potential growth of the market using a Category Development Index (CDI), which aids in understanding the growth potential of a market. The European food market has recently reached its capacity and is now experiencing a low growth rate (Data Monitor, 2011). It is time for food companies to find a new ‘blue ocean’ to avoid fierce competition in the mature markets of Europe. Therefore, this analysis of the confectionery market, using the Market Attractiveness Matrix and CDI will suggest opportune directions for global food companies.

        The main goal of this study is to show promising future food market of Northeast Asia countries, including China, Japan, and South Korea. Drinks market, including soft and alcoholic drinks is selected to show global food companies new opportunities for next strategic movements. Market Attractiveness Matrix is developed based on BCG matrix as a main framework for this study. CDI (Category Development Index) is also used. It is found that Asia-pacific has fast-growing markets and it has strong potential for future investment. Northeast Asia countries (China, Japan, and South Korea) turned out to be ones of the most attractive regional markets. However, European drinks market is saturated even though its size is still big. This study suggests that Northeast Asian market be considered a market for the next strategic movement and investment.

        Nanotechnology represents a new frontier in science and technology with long term goals and benefits. Nowadays, nanotechnology is producing many revolutions and applications such as quantum computing, surface and materials modification, novel separation and sensing technologies, and human biomedical replacements. These new techniques are being introduced in food and bio filed. In this review, the status and trends related to nanocomposites, nanoparticles, nanotubes, delivery vehicles and biosafety were reviewed. The situation of funding of nanotechnology research in USA, Japan and Korea is also summarized.
