        Previously, we reported a quantitative trait locus (QTL) that affect total teat number (TTN) on pig chromosome 7 (SSC7) in a large F2 intercross population between Landrace and Korean native pigs. The aim of this study was to refine the QTL associated with TTN and to identify positional candidate gene(s) within the refined genomic region. TTN was recorded in 1,105 F2 progeny. All experimental animals were genotyped using 998 informative single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers located on SSC7. A haplotype-based linkage and association analysis using the PHASEBOOK programme was applied to perform high-resolution QTL analysis. Additionally, linear mixed-effect models were used to assess the effect of a positional candidate gene on TTN and other economically important traits [i.e., thoracic vertebrae number (THO), carcass body length (CBL) and weight (CW), back fat thickness (BFT) and intramuscular fat content (IMF) in loin muscles]. Joint linkage and association analysis refined the critical region to a 1.07 Mb region that included a novel positional candidate gene, BRMS1L, that encodes the breast cancer metastasis-suppressor 1-like protein, which could possibly be implicated in normal mammary gland development. Significant association of an SNP marker (g.-1087 G>A) in the 5’-flanking region of BRMS1L with TTN (P=1.10x10-8), THO (P=5.80x10-4), and CBL (P=0.038) was observed. Based on these data, we propose BRMS1L as a positional candidate gene for TTN in pigs. After validation of the association in other independent populations and further functional studies, these results could be useful in optimizing breeding programmes that improve TTN and other economically important traits in swine

        The concern on the greenhouse gas emissions is increasing globally. Especially, the greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue due to Cancun Agreements Mexico in 1992 and the Kyoto protocol in 2005. Furthermore, the Korean government has a plan to reduce the GHG emissions as 5.2% compared to the BAU in fisheries until 2020. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries has not been executed much. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is needed as the first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from the major coastal fisheries such as coastal gillnet fishery, coastal dual purpose fishery, coastal pots fishery and coastal small scale stow net fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emission from the fisheries using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the unit weight of fishes are also calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.

        To determine sugars content of agricultural products and foods, simultaneous quantitative analysis was carried out on fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose by HPLC-RI. Analysis conditions were set as column ZORBAX carbohydrate (4.6 mm ID×250 mm, 5 μm), the mobile phase of 75% ACN, the column temperature of 35oC, sample injection amount of 10 μL and the flow rate of 1 mL/min. Five standard solutions were isolated without interfering peak within 30 minutes and the calibration curves of standard were confirmed excellent linearity from 0.10% to 1.00% with R2≥0.999. Based on the chromatogram of the standard solution, the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the limit of detection (LOD) values were calculated. The accuracy of the analytical values were highest at 100% water extraction method to the fructose 95.7%, sucrose 98.7%, lactose 102.7% respectively, compared with reference value of a certified reference material (BCR644), by applying the four solvent extraction methods. Using an in-house quality control material (infant formula), repeatability and reproducibility values of this experiment were verified on the basis of AOAC guideline and reference values were set up at 1.17 g/100g of glucose, 0.85 g/100g of maltose, and 45.54 g/100g of lactose. Quality control charts were drawn up and used for sugars analysis of agricultural products.

        The ultrastructural parameters related to synaptic release of endings which are presynaptic to tooth pulp afferent terminals (p-endings) were analyzed to understand the underlying mechanism for presynaptic modulation of tooth pulp afferents. Tooth pulp afferents were labelled by applying wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase to the rat right lower incisor, whereafter electron microscopic morphometric analysis with serial section and reconstruction of p-endings in the trigeminal oral nucleus was performed. The results obtained from 15 p-endings presynaptic to 11 labeled tooth pulp afferent terminals were as follows. P-endings contained pleomorphic vesicles and made symmetrical synaptic contacts with labeled terminals. The p-endings showed small synaptic release-related ultrastructural parameters: volume, 0.82 ± 0.45 μm3 (mean ± SD); surface area, 4.50 ± 1.76 μm2; mitochondrial volume, 0.15 ± 0.07 μm3; total apposed surface area, 0.69 ± 0.24 μm2; active zone area, 0.10 ± 0.04 μm2; total vesicle number, 1045 ± 668.86; and vesicle density, 1677 ± 684/μm2. The volume of the p-endings showed strong positive correlation with the following parameters: surface area (r=0.97, P<0.01), mitochondrial volume (r=0.56, P<0.05), and total vesicle number (r=0.73, P<0.05). However, the volume of p-endings did not positively correlate or was very weakly correlated with the apposed surface area (r=-0.12, P=0.675) and active zone area (r=0.46, P=0.084). These results show that some synaptic release-related ultrastructural parameters of p-endings on the tooth pulp afferent terminals follow the “size principle” of Pierce and Mendell (1993) in the trigeminal nucleus oralis, but other parameters do not. Our findings may demonstrate a characteristic feature of synaptic release associated with p-endings.

        Recently, polycosanol products have been actively introduced into the domestic market based on their potential biological activity. The analytical procedures of polycosanol, which determine the TMS derivatives of each polycosanol with GC-FID, were presented for inspection of standards. However, the conventional procedures are not readily applicable to polycosanol emulsion which is prepared by mixing polycosanol and water together with emulsifiers because of their interferences. Therefore, the quantitative analytical procedure of polycosanol emulsion with GC-MS at selected ion monitoring mode was proposed and its validity was inspected for standardization. The analysis of polycosanol standards according to the proposed procedure showed the following values: 90.5% for reproducibility; 0.48-5.83% for the RSD; 0.000479-0.001314 μg/μL for the LOD; 0.001452-0.003983 μg/μL for the LOQ; 80.38-108.98% for accuracy; and 0.01-4.88% for the coefficients of variation. The average reproducibilities of polycosanol emulsions according to the current procedure were 87.43±4.48% and 88±2.2%, respectively, which were within the 80-120% range of the designated amounts. Therefore, it was found that the proposed analytical procedure with GC-MS at SIM mode in this study would be promising for the accurate quantitative analysis of polycosanol emulsion.

        Lycopene, one of the major carotenoids in human diet, has been suggested as a healthful phytochemical compound. Recently, it is important to quantify lycopene content in the lycopene-containing foods. However, it has been difficult to analyze lycopene content in the lycopene-containing foods using a HPLC because lycopene is not fully extracted during sample pretreatment resulting in less reliable quantitative data. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of solvent on lycopene extraction from lycopene-containing foods for HPLC quantitative analysis. Two different solvents such as 100% acetone and methanol/acetone (1:1) mixture were used to extract lycopenefrom a commercial lycopene-enriched tomato concentrate (containing approximate 72 mg/g lycopene). All extracted samples were sonicated for 10 min, centrifuged, and filtered before injection into HPLC. The analysis of lycopene content was performed by an Ultimate3000 series HPLC system using a Unisol C18 column on UV detector at 450 nm. When the lycopene-enriched tomato concentrate was extracted using 100% acetone and methanol/acetone mixture for HPLC analysis, the lycopene contents were 75.88 and 39.84 (mg/g), respectively. As a result of quantitative analysis, acetone was able to extract lycopene fully from the lycopene-containing foods. The HPLC method established in this study might be useful to quantify lycopene in the lycopene-containing foods which are manufactured in various typessuchasbeverage, powder, tablet, and etc

        Quantitative analysis of termites damage is important in terms of conservation and maintenance of wooden cultural heritage buildings, because termites makes cavities and decreases the section area of wooden structural members. The purpose of this study is to forecast the range and spread of termites damage in the wooden structural members by using ultrasonic pulse velocity method. Ultrasonic pulse velocity has been used as one of non-destructive test to analysis the internal defect by using difference velocity between medium material and cavity. This method would be effective to analysis termites damages. From the result of the ultrasonic velocity test, the loss rate of area effected by termites damage had a strong correlation with ultrasonic velocity. And it is possible to predict the loss rate of area from by termites damage by using regression equation in the case of structural member of fine tree.

        Recent studies have shown that mating can alter starvation resistance in female D. melanogaster, but little is known about the behavioral and physiological mechanisms underlying such mating-mediated changes in starvation resistance. In the present study, we first investigated whether the effect of mating on starvation resistance is sex-specific in D. melanogaster. As indicated by a significant sex × mating status interaction, mating increased starvation resistance in females but not in males. In female D. melanogaster, post-mating increase in starvation resistance was mainly attributed to increases in food intake and in the level of lipid storage relative to lean body weight. We then performed quantitative genetic analysis to estimate the proportion of the total phenotypic variance attributable to genetic differences (i.e., heritability) for starvation resistance in mated male and female D. melanogaster. The narrow-sense heritability (h2) of starvation resistance was 0.235 and 0.155 for males and females, respectively. Mated females were generally more resistant to starvation than males, but the degree of such sexual dimorphism varied substantially among genotypes, as indicated by a significant sex × genotype interaction for starvation resistance. Cross-sex genetic correlation was greater than 0 but less than l for starvation resistance, implying that the genetic architecture of this trait was partially shared between the two sexes. For both sexes, starvation resistance was positively correlated with longevity and lipid storage at genetic level. The present study suggests that sex differences in starvation resistance depend on mating status and have a genetic basis in D. melanogaster.

        ‘Well-being’ is an important trend and issue that requires consumers to be satisfied with various functional fabrics; subsequently, functional fabrics that are highly sensible, functional, and environmentally friendly have a competitive edge (O’Mahony & Braddock, 2002; Hui, Lau & Ng, 2004). Recent interest in environmental protection due to global warming has led to various energy reduction campaigns. Fabric research has focused on developing cool summer fabrics and warm winter fabrics. The selection of a correct textile material is important to form a pleasant clothing climate. New fabric development requires new measurement methods. Warm/cool touch is a major factor that influences thermal clothing comfort. Current measurements of warm/cool touch is mainly assessed by Q-max using Thermo-LaboⅡ. The potential of using an infrared thermography camera (widely used because of its relatively cheap price) on warm/cool touch research has increased because it can visually show changes in clothing surface temperature. Skin temperature is a factor that influences heat exchange between the body and environment. It also indicates the effectiveness of the heat transfer process. It is an important standard to evaluate thermal comfort in thermal physiology. The techniques to measure skin temperature have been investigated to find more accurate data (Min, Chung, Sung, Jeon, & Kim, 2001). A thermometer is generally used to measure body temperature; however, there are some difficulties to accurately measure skin temperature using a thermometer. First, skin temperature was determined by only a few points on the body. Second, heat occurs during exercising due to fabric and thermometer friction that creates difficulties for the accurate measurement of skin temperature. A previous study by Choi & Lee (2008) indicated that it would be possible to evaluate the thermal properties of clothing using infrared thermal images. This study used a garment with different triacetate and PET high absorbance quick dry filament blending ratios and chose three healthy female subjects in their twenties to evaluate wear comfort sensations. They walked at 3.3 km/h for 20 minutes under conditions of 29±2℃ and 75±5% R.H. Subjective assessments of wear coolness, microclimate, and the thermogram image under the clothing were measured before and after exercising. We compared the results of the microclimate and subjective assessments with the results of the thermogram analyses. Clothing, high blended with triacetate, had a small average temperature difference as indicated by infrared thermal image. This result corresponded to subjective thermal sensation, microclimate humidity, and subjective wear comfort.

        Near Infra-red (NIR) analytical method was applied to quantify fat, moisture, protein, and salt in meat products. To ensure an accurate analysis, the NIR analysis method was compared with Korean food standard codex method. Correlation coefficients were 0.961-0.997, and the ratio of standard error of prediction (SEP) with standard error of laboratory (SEL) were 1.01-1.32. Z-score and Q score were −0.02-0.95 and −0.27-0.15, respectively. A control chart was conducted for three meat products. Each control chart data consisted of fat, moisture, protein, and salt, and it was produced by NIR analysis. The control chart of meat products was used for quality control.

        The negative factors of fishery in environmental aspect of view are Greenhouse gas emission problems by high usage of fossil fuel, destruction of underwater ecosystem by bottom trawls, reduction of resources by fishing and damage of ecosystem diversity. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the edible weight of fishes are calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas and slaughtering process also. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.

        한국지구과학회 창립 50주년을 맞아 1979년 창간 한 이후 36년간 지구과학과 지구과학교육 전문가들의 학술교류와 다음 세대 교육에 큰 역할을 한 한국지구과학회지에 출판된 논문을 정량적으로 분석하였다. 한국지구과학회지를 통하여 2014년 8월 기준 35권 1,544편의 논문이 실렸고, 년 간 실리는 논문 수도 증가하여 왔다. 한국지구과학회지에 실린 논문들은 지구과학 내용학 관련 논문이 69.3%, 지구과학 교육학 논문이 30.7%이며, 내용학 논문 중 지질학 55.2%, 대기과학 17.6%, 환경과학 16.0%, 해양학 6.0%, 천문학 5.2%의 분포를 보였다. 최근 들어 대기과학과 환경과학 논문 수가 크게 증가하고 있으나, 지구과학 교육학 관련 논문수는 15년 전 수준으로 감소하였다. 이는 2008년 12월 창간호를 낸 대한지구과학교육학회지의 창간과 관련이 있는 것으로 보인다. 한국지구과학회지에 게재된 외국인 저자들의 공동 참여 논문 수는 53편으로 전체 논문의 3.4%에 불과하여 한국지구과학회지가 우수등재학술지로 정착하기 위해서는 학회지의 양적인 팽창 뿐만 아니라 질적인 성장에도 관심을 기울여야 할 것으로 생각되며, 영문 홈페이지 개선과 함께 국제적 홍보가 필요하다고 생각된다. 교육부는 앞으로 학술지 등재제도의 지나친 문제점의 발생으로 학술지 등재제도 폐지를 통한 학계 자율평가체제로의 전환을 구상 중이며 한국지구과학회지도 이러한 미래의 변화에 대해 철저히 준비하여 학회의 위상을 제고하여야 할 것으로 생각된다.

        본 연구에서는 FCV 현탁액에 물리, 화학적 위생처리 후 복합효소처리라는 전처리과정을 적용한 뒤 real-time RTPCR법을 이용하여 살균효능을 분석하였다. RT-PCR 이전에 37oC에서 30분 동안 PK와 RNase A를 처리함으로써 UV, 열, 염소, 에탄올, 과초산계열 제품에 의해 불활성화 된 바이러스들은 음성 결과를 나타내었고, real-time RTPCR법을 통해 살균 효능을 정량분석한 결과, 복합효소처리를 했을 경우 무처리구보다 더 높은 살균 효능을 보이는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이로써 Nuanualsuwan S. 등11,18,29)의 선행연구에서와 같이 PK와 RNase A로 전처리하는 단계를 통하여 물리, 화학적 위생처리에 의해 손상되지 않은 바이러스가 RT-PCR 법에 의해 증폭되는 것을 방지함으로써 Real-time PCR법 에 대한 검출 감도를 높일 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한, FCV를 검출하기 위해 사용된 RT-PCR과 real-time RT-PCR 두 방법 중에서도 real-time RT-PCR법이 가장 신속하면서도 민감도 높은 결과로 도출되었다. 따라서, 유전자 분석 이전에 복합효소처리는 물리, 화학적 위생처리에 의해 불활성화 된 바이러스의 RNA가 transcription 또는 증폭되는 것을 방지하기 위한 수단으로 real-time RT-PCR법과 결합 됨으로써 노로바이러스를 비롯한 식중독 바이러스를 검출 하는데 효과적으로 적용될 것으로 판단된다. 또한 식품현 장에서 전기영동 과정없이 신속하게 살아있는 바이러스만을 수치적으로 정량화함으로써 식품안전에도 기여할 것으 로 사료된다.

        본 연구는 계방산 가문비나무 및 전나무 임분의 산림식생유형분류와 정량적 분석을 위하여 Z-M 식물사회학적 방법으로 식생구조의 유형분류를 실시한 결과, 군락단위에서 가문비나무군락, 전나무군락으로 분류되었으며 가문비나무군락은 군단위에서 흰인가목군과 부게꽃나무군으로 세분되었으며, 전나무군락은 복장나무군과 생강나무군으로 세분되었다. 분류된 식생단위를 기준으로 중요치를 산출한 결과, 가문비나무는 식생단위 1과 2의 교목층에서 각각 30.73%, 20.25%로 비교적 높게 나타나 당분간 가문비나무의 우점이 계속될 것이라 판단되었다. 또한 종다양도를 분석한 결과 식생단위 4의 종다양도 지수는 0.6976으로 가장 낮았으며, 식생단위 2의 종다양도 지수는 1.1256으로 가장 높게 나타났다. 군락간의 유사도는 식생단위 1과 4, 2와 4가 각각 0.2880과 0.3626으로 낮게 나타났으며 식생단위 1과 2, 3과 4의 군락유사성은 각각 0.5411과 0.5041로 나타나, 군락 간 구성종의 차이가 크지 않은 군락으로 판단되었다. 종간연관에 대한 Chi-square matrix와 성좌표를 각각 분석한 결과, 크게 2개의 유형으로 나뉘어졌는데 Ⅰ유형의 식물 종들은 대부분 식물사회학적으로 분류된 가문비나무군락에서 주로 출현하는 식별종과 표징종이었으며, Ⅱ유형의 식물종은 전나무군락에서 주로 출현하는 식물종으로, 비교적 습한 곳에 나타나는 종들로 나뉘어졌다. 이러한 결과는 각 수종들이 선호하는 생육환경이 비슷한 종들끼리는 정의 상관이 인정되고, 선호하는 환경이 다른 종들끼리는 부의 상관을 보이는 것으로 판단된다.

        도시의 입지와 공간적 특성은 산지 지형과 밀접한 관련성을 가지며, 도시와 산지 지형은 지속적으로 상호작용 하면서 변화하고 있다. 특히, 산지 지형이 도시에 주는 다양한 영향을 통해 도시의 입지와 도시 내부 구조가 형성, 변화하고 있다. 그러나 도시와 산지 지형 간 공간적 관계의 중요성에도 불구하고, 이에 대한 실증적 분석 연구가 제대로 이루어지지 않는 실정이다. 본 연구는 도시와 산지 지형 간 공간 관계를 이론적으로 고찰하고, 이 관계를 사례 연구를 통해 실증적으로 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 실증적 탐색을 위해 세계 수도를 중심으로 도시 규모, 고도, 최근린 거리를 중심으로 관계성을 살펴보았고, 일본, 중국, 미국의 도시를 대상으로 도시 규모, 고도, 경사도, 토지이용 등을 중심으로 공간 관계를 탐색하였다. 수도 도시 사례를 통해 도시의 규모와 고도의 상관성을 확인하였다. 그리고 일본, 중국, 미국 도시의 사례 분석을 통해 도시의 고도, 인구, 최근린 거리의 상관관계를 일부 살펴볼 수 있었으며, 또한 세 차례 도시의 내부 구조 분석을 통해 고도, 경사도에 따라 토지이용 패턴이 나타남을 확인할 수 있었다.

        Leptotrombidium pallidum and Leptotrombidium scutellare are the major vector mites for Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of scrub typhus. Before these organisms can be subjected to whole-genome sequencing, the genome sizes of L. pallidum and L. scutellare were estimated by a method based on quantitative real-time PCR. In addition, k-mer analysis of the genome sequences obtained from Illumina sequencing was conducted to verify the mutual compatibility and reliability of results. The genome sizes estimated by qPCR were 191.3±7 Mb for L. pallidum and 262.1±13 Mb for L. scutellare. The estimated genome sizes based on k-mer analysis were 175.5 Mb for L. pallidum and 286.6 Mb for L. scutellare. The estimates from two independent methods were mutually complementary and in a similar range to those of other Acariform mites. The relatively small genome size would facilitate genome analysis, which could contribute to understanding Arachnida genome evolution and mite vector competence and provide key information for scrub typhus prevention.

        Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis in all age groups and its food poisoning outbreaks are rapidly increasing in Korea. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is most widely used for the rapid detection of foodborne viruses due to high sensitivity. However, the false positive results of RT-PCR obtained against already inactivated viruses could be a serious drawbacks in food safety area. In this study, we investigated a method to yield true positive RT-PCR results only with alive viruses. To decompose the RNA genes from dead viruses, the enzymatic treatments composed of proteinse K and Ribonuclease A were applied to the sanitized and inactivated virus particles. Another aim of this study was to quantify the efficiencies of several major sanitizing treatments using realtime RT-PCR. Feline calicivirus (FCV) that belongs to the same Caliciviridae family with norovirus was used as a surrogate model for norovirus. The initial level of virus in control suspension was approximately 104 PFU/mL. Most of inactivated viruses treated with the enzymatic treatment for 30 min at 37oC were not detected in RT-PCR, Quantification results to verify the inactivation efficiencies of sanitizing treatments using real-time RT-PCR showed no false positive in most cases. We could successfully develope a numerical quantification process for the inactivated viruses after major sanitizing treatments using real-time RT-PCR. The results obtained in this study could provide a novel basis of rapid virus quantification in food safety area.

        In biomass gasification, efficiency of energy quantification is a difficult part without finishing the process. In this article, a radial basis function neural network (RBFN) is proposed to predict biomass efficiency before gasification. RBFN will be compared with a principal component regression (PCR) and a multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPN). Due to the high dimensionality of data, principal component transform is first used in PCR and afterwards, ordinary regression is applied to selected principal components for modeling. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPN) is also used without any preprocessing. For this research, 3 wood samples and 3 other feedstock are used and they are near infrared (NIR) spectrum data with high-dimensionality. Ash and char are used as response variables. The comparison results of two responses will be shown.
