This is a case study of tandem learning using a metaverse platform in a Vietnamese-Korean language course. It aimed to explore more efficient foreign language teaching methods beyond traditional approaches. To achieve this, the study provides an in-depth look at the course structure that incorporated tandem learning, the interactions between learners on the metaverse platform, and survey results reflecting their learning experiences and perceptions of this particular approach. This study is significant in that it provided a new learning environment using the metaverse, enabling more active participation from learners. It also integrated the tandem learning method, which allows learners to actively participate in the mutual language acquisition process as both target language learners and as instructors or experts of the partner’s target language. Furthermore, the study is meaningful for its specific attempt to design tandem learning classes using the metaverse, particularly for Vietnamese-Korean classes.
This study analyzes the fifth edition of the enhanced spelling of the Indonesian language (EYD V) by comparing it with the original Indonesian spelling system (EBI) in terms of the use of character and punctuation. Specifically, it presumes that the frequent occurrence of errors in the Indonesian spelling systems is related to both indifference in Indonesian orthography and recurrent orthographic revisions. Based on this premise, it investigates differences between the original EBI, officially announced in 2015, and EYD V, the latest Indonesian spelling system, in terms of the use of character and punctuation. The analytic results found that EYD V includes several new elements, such as the introduction of a monophthong eu and the use of consonants q, x, and y at the end of words. Furthermore, it was found that EYD V provides the revised and supplemented contents compared to the original EBI from multiple perspectives by implementing enhanced consistency and timeliness in descriptions and error correction. The outcomes of this study are expected to serve as essential data for Indonesian writing education and as comparative data for discussions on Malay orthography in relation to Indonesian orthography.
This study investigated the convergence of content and language integrated learning, translanguaging, and global citizenship education in an EFL tertiary English class. Conceptualized within translanguaging as an assemblage for meaning-making, machine translation was incorporated into the course in a way that EFL bilinguals could fully avail themselves of their linguistic repertoire for the learning of global citizenship and language. The analyses of thirty-three students’ response essays and survey results demonstrate the success of MT as both a scaffold for bridging language-content gaps and a tool for language acquisition. Design features, perceived as important, were a careful introduction and training on MT use and teacher feedback on MT-assisted writing. Survey results emphasize the crucial role of the students’ L1 in meaning-making. The study offers a practical guide for educators interested in using MT in L2 writing instruction and encourages further research on the theoretical and pedagogical applications of translanguaging in diverse EFL contexts.

Language use is divided into production and understanding in which each component has its own sub-parts, although they s hare core language p art (its f orm) in common. Given memory-based approach, it is claimed, at least five layers of our mind must simultaneously be activated to pass in a retrospective cycle in language use. A surface form, or a flow of sounds or letters, leads to a trigger to find an intention-in-action in any verbal communication that fits the situation of communication. This dramatically opens up a new phase to focus, once we deal with the overall aspect of language use.
This article explores the socioreligious background of the Shang dynasty oracle bone inscriptions from an unconventional perspective by analyzing the use of oracular language in epigraphic texts found on slightly later ritual bronze vessels. While this phenomenon has so far received little scholarly attention, the author argues that the cross-contextual occurrence of oracular terminology indicates a relationship between the two types of epigraphic texts and the social discourses from which they were created. Drawing on parallel passages in other bronze inscriptions, the author examines the precise meanings of the two most common oracular phrases and proposes that they belonged to a technical terminology that shared fundamental conceptual characteristics with later legal jargon. Addressing the communicative intention behind their use, the author points out that oracular language is generally placed in prominent positions in bronze inscriptions and appears in various highly ritualized and ceremonial interactions between humans and the ancestral spirits. Based on these observations, the author concludes that the bronze inscriptions support the view that the Shang dynasty oracle bone inscriptions were written for administrative and specialized purposes and were embedded in a much wider network of communication practices between humans and supra-human powers.

This study is about meta-language used for teaching the Korean language in Serbia, where it is not a native language. This study examined meta-language for teaching preferred by Korean language learners of Serbia and explored efficient methods of meta-language use for teaching. First, meta-language and meta-language for teaching were discussed, and meta-language for Korean language teaching was defined. After setting up the research question and hypothesis, a survey was conducted on Korean language learners at the University of Niš in Serbia to determine their preferred meta-language for teaching. According to the survey, many learners wanted to take classes in ‘Korean-Serbian languages.’ Beginner and intermediate learners of vocabulary, grammar, and conversation preferred ‘Korean-Serbian’ meta-language for teaching, and advanced learners preferred ‘Korean’ meta-language for teaching. Based on such grounds and existing theories, this paper proposed a usage model of meta-language for teaching in beginner, intermediate, and advanced Korean language classes in Serbia and presented the necessity for fostering professional Korean language instructors overseas.
The purpose of this study is to examine a corpus regarding the use of discriminatory language and its perceptions. First, we examined informal job titles that indicate social views regarding the respective workers, and then we analyzed expressions indicating negative perceptions as well as negative expressions about occupations and tasks to determine negative views or attitudes toward the workers. Summarizing the results of the analysis, ganhowon(nurse) and cheongsobu(cleaner) as inappropriate titles, nogada(physical labor) and gongdori/gongsuni(factory boy/girl) as expressions of negative perception, and nogada and wunjeonsu(driver) in negative expressions related to occupations and work occur with high frequency. Ganhowon is used with titles for women like eonni(older sister), agassi(lady), and Miss ○, cheongsobu and pachulbu(day maids) with the titles ajumma(tannie) and ajeossi(older man), wunjeonsu and gongsuni with the epithets nom(jerk) and nyeon(bitch), and nogada with the titles ilggun(workers) and inbu(laborers), and such terms as jjapsae(the fuss) with a epithet saeggi(jerk/bleeder) are used mainly as inappropriate titles. Bad behavior, deprecatory social treatment, and negligent discrimination are conveyed in these expressions of negative perception. The expressions related to occupation and work were mainly used for professionals doing less respected or socially lower work or who do not work well, and there were many expressions indicative of low status or lower rank in the job hierarchy. Lastly, references to appearance and sexuality were those most frequently used in expressions conveying other occupational discrimination, and were found to be used mainly for ganhowon and gongsuni who are young women.
Reform and opening-up in China brought rapid changes in the society of ethnic Koreans in China. And those changes caused following changes in language identity and language attitude of those ethnic Koreans that eventually led to change in their language use. The present study investigates relation between changes in language identity and language attitude and their language use.
The rates that Ethnic Koreans living in Jilin, China consider their mother language to be Korean(Joseon language, South Korean language and North Korean language) are different by their generations. Middle aged and older people tend more to consider Korean as their mother language compared to younger generation. Those two generations, however, showed opposed opinions about the future language they will use. More of older generation predicted that Korean will be rarely used among ethnic Koreans living in China in the future compared to younger generation.
The difference of language identity and the attitude to the language across generations was reflected in their actual language use. Older generations use Korean in general. They may borrow Chinese words when they can’t come up with appropriate Korean words or sometimes show code mixing by using Chinese words and sentences while speaking in Korean. In generations younger than middle age, code mixing and code switching are more frequently observed when their conversation topics are Chinese politics and Chinese cultures. The youngest generation mainly uses Chinese and showed code switching most frequently among all generations. The language use observed differently among the generations is reflection of changes in language identity and language attitude.
This study examines student opinions into teacher use of English as a lingua franca as a second language to teach a third language. This research focuses on student recognition of the benefits of specific teacher uses of English as a lingua franca, student preferences of specific teacher uses of English as a lingua franca, and potential attitudinal effects of teacher use of English as a lingua franca. Thirty eight Korean university students participated in this study by completing a questionnaire. The data were analyzed through Mann Whitney U tests, a Borda count, chi-squared goodness of fit tests, and descriptive statistics. The results revealed students held the different uses in a similar and positive light but did not prefer uses that perform a social function. The results also showed students did not perceive of much positive attitudinal benefit (anxiety, connection to the teacher, and motivation). Nor did the students indicate teacher use of English as a lingua franca causes the students to lose face or feel that their mother tongue is disrespected. Classroom implications and limitations are discussed.
L2 learners’ target language use has been examined for various purposes, including assessment of the learners’ proficiency and examination of the process of language learning. That is, target language use in the real life tasks on the level as automatized as that of native speakers represents the goal of L2 learning. More importantly, however, target language use has been proposed as a process that provides the learning opportunities, particularly since 1980s by communicative approach to SLA. Until the learners can communicate effortlessly without being conscious of the form of the language, how learners’ attention and awareness are or should be directed to the language form and meaning has been an important issue among the recent SLA theories, summarized as the interface/non-interface debate. This paper discusses how different major SLA theories view learners’ attention and awareness of language form during language use and how it has been measured for both process and result research. Finally, a recent neurobiolobical SLA model is introduced in terms of its methodological and theoretical contribution to SLA research.

The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 19(1). The purpose of this study is to investigate current status of Korean teenagers' language use regarding expletives, teenage slangs, and buzz-words, by employing a questionnaire survey. We have obtained a sample of 2418 teenage students from elementary, middle, and high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. For data analysis, we performed frequency, mean, chi-square test, and Spearman's correlation analysis. Our results indicate that expletives, teenage slangs, and buzz-words tend to be widely used in daily life with almost no sense of guilt or shame and that frequency of expletives highly increase from middle school age. Negative result of expletives is an increase in physical and verbal aggression as well as in passive aggression. Some of the questioned replied that they feel estrangement and inconvenience about teenage slangs and buzz-words. Additionally, we found that elements of family conversation, parental propensity to control, school education, leisure activity, self-control, and empathy ability correlate closely with frequency of expletives in teenage students.
