In recent years, there has been a great change in the earth science. Introducing new theories such as sea floor spreading and plate tectonics theories, sophisticated geological phenomena including continental drift, earthquakes and volcanic activities can be scientificaly explained. According to the great change of the concept of earth tectonics, earth science curriculum of domestic and foreign secondary school are now adapting this new concept such as new global tectonics. The aim of this study is to improve curriculum and develope a new efficient teaching-learning method by analyzing the contents of the chapter connected with plate tectonics in the elementary, middle and high school curriculum. For this purpose, American ESCP, CEEP and Korean earth science textbooks were analyzed in terms of general concept, system and construction. As the results, newly setting up the plate tectonics chapter include the contents of the concept of the plate, plate movement and historical back ground of the new global tectonics.

We investigate the forms, the inquiry levels and the objective types in the inquiry activities of the Earth Science text book (Science I HA) that was reorganized at March, 1988 from the eight publishers, according to the reference of Schwab's(1966) inquiry level of experiment and the Klopfer's (1971) classification of objectives of science education. Ninty seven percents of the experiments belong to the 1st level of the Schwab' s(1966) inquiry level and there are no activities of the 3rd level. On the basis of Klopfer's classification, ninty eight percents of the inquiry objectives are included in the only four kinds (A.O, B.O, D.O, G.O) of the nine objectives, and the rest (C.O, E.O, F.O, H.O, I. O) of the important objectives that are indispensable to the inquiry process seems to be exclusive. Conclusively speaking, the inquiry ability of the students may not be cultivated by the experiments in present text-book.

In most marine seismic refraction studies using shots detonated near the sea surface, the location of receivers and shots are usually assumed to be located at the point of deployment and the shot times are accurately known. In the case of bottom shots and receivers, however, the above assumption can be led to big errors in the shot and receiver positions. The errors in the shot and receiver positions can cause severe distort in the interpretation of deep ocean refraction studies. In this study, an inversion algorithm has been developed to reduce the errors in the shot and receiver position. The inversion method has been used to obtain the shot and receiver positions and the shot origin times of a deep ocean refraction seismic experiment which was performed near the Juan de Fuca ridge in 1985. The comparison of two seismic record sections, one using the initial shot and receiver positions and the other using the shot and receiver positions obtained by the inversion algorithm, shows that the seismic signals emerges much more gradually in the latter. This indicated that the posotions of shots and receivers should be relocated using some inversion methods for better interpretation of deep marine seismic refraction studies.

This paper reports on the investigation of the distributions of sediments and heavy metals in Sooyoung River and its mouth, carried out during the period from July 1990 and August 1991. Since the samples were saline, water analysis was performed by the method of alkaline KMnO₄ and sediment analysis by acidic KMnO₄. Mercury was digested with both nitric and sulfuric acids, and then determined by dithizone CCl4 method. Cadmium, Zinc, Copper, Lead and Chronium were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy after aliquots of samples were digested with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Mineral components of sediments were identified by XRD and microscopic analysis. The result are as follows : 1. The ranges of COD of water and sediments were 10.6-54.6ppm and 63-26000ppm respectively. 2. The ranges of concentrations of Cadmium, Lead, Copper and Zinc for water were 0.002 -0.024ppm, 0. 013-0.060ppm, 0.013-0.736ppm, 0.003-0.012ppm, respectively. 3. The ranges of concentration of Mercury, Cadmium, Lead, Copper, Zinc and Chromium for sediments were N.D - 0.09ppm, 0 .1-2.07ppm, 0.32-5 2.35 ppm, 1.04 - 20.67 ppm, 7.1-52.50 ppm and 0.23-5.22 ppm, respectively. 4. The mineral components of the sediments were mainly quartz and feldspar.

In the Mt. Kwangduk area, Ansan, Kyunggi-do, a hydrogeologic study was carried out with resistivity measurements from 33 points along 7 profiles with Schlumberger array and drilling from 18 points in the metamorphic rock area, which is composed of the Precambrian muscovite schist or graphite schist. The study area is covered by 25 meter thick Quaternary alluvium. The V.E.S.curves of resistivity showed N10-45° W and N10-20° E trending low apparent resistivity zone. This trend of low resistivity values is interpreted as shattered zone. The drilling data including lithologic log and exact depths of basement rocks allow to determine yield capacity, coefficients of permeability and coefficients of transmissibility. The groundwater yield capacity is related to the weathered zone and apparent resistivity anomaly but not related to the well depth. Large yield capacity of groundwater is interpreted to be the same trend as the direction of joint development and topographic relief.

A sedimentary petrologic study was carried out to clarify the composition and textural properties of the Yuchi Conglomerate in the vicinity of Yuchi-rayon, Jangheung-gun The mean size of the clasts ranges from -3.2φ to -5.5φ. Most of the conglomerate in the area is classified as pebble conglomerate. Most of the clasts are subrounded to rounded, and discoidal and spheroidal clasts are ample. The clasts are mainly composed of andesite, rhyolite, granitic gneiss and tuff with some quartzite and vein quartz. 1t is assumed that depositional environment of conglomerates was fluvial environment. On the basis of sedimentological properties of conglomerates, the source area of the Yuchi Conglomerate seems to have been located to the north to northeast of the depositional basin.

The southern margin of Euiseong sub-basin north of Mt. Palgong, Daegu is composed of Cretaceous elastic sediments, which were intruded by Palgongsan granitic rocks at the end of Cretaceous period. During investigation of the heavy minerals extracted from the sediments, plenty of the unstable heavy minerals like epidote and garnet etc. compared to other parts of Kyungsang basin necessitated the study of depositional environment and diagenesis of the sediments. The occurrence of those unstable heavy minerals such as epidote and garnet seems to be associated with intrusion of Palgongsan granite and accompanied metamorphism. Twenty four representative specimens throughout the area were studied for grain size analysis and clay mineralogy. The grain size ranges from fine to medium sand fraction, showing fining upward trend from Nagdong through Hasandong, Jinju, Iljig, Hupyeongdong to Jeomgog formations. The sand grains are moderately sorted, normal to very negatively skewed, and mesokurtic. The bivariant grain size analysis tests such as skewness vs standard deviation (Friedman, 1967) and mean diameter vs standard deviation (Moiola and Weiser, 1968) strongly suggest fluvio-lacustrine environment. The clay minerals extracted from eight of the specimens are illite and chlorite . Mixed layer clay minerals are not identified. Illite crystallinity of the illite diffraction peaks was discussed in relation to diagenesis. The illite crystallinity ranges from 2.23° to 6.20°(Weaver index values) and from 0.25 2B to 0.60° 2θ (Kubler index values) and strongly suggests that some of the specimens already passed through zone of diagenesis and transfered to anchizone.
