The papers of earth science examinations given during the first semester of 1981 academic year were collected from the seventy five high schools randomly chosen all over the country. The examination questions were analyzed and evaluated in order to grasp the current state and issues of earth science education. Some critical remarks and suggestions are made for improvement of the earth science education at the secondary school level.

The 44 events of high tides recorded in the Joseonwangjo-silog (1392-1903) were investigated and analyzed. These 44 records were described with explanation in time sequence after conversion to Gregorean date. Among the 44 events listed in the Joseonwangjo-silog, one event which took place in Youngjo 17th (1741), was caused by the underwater seismic earthquake, and the others were all associated with the storm surges. And the 36 events took place in the western coast, the 7 events in the eastern coast, and the only 3 events in the southern coast.

The offshore magnetic data were analyzed to determine the depth of magnetic basement of Kyungi-bay. The mean depth to the basement was computed by a power spectral analysis method. To determine the relief of magnetic basement, the total magnetic intensity data were first reduced to the pole and transformed to a pseudo-gravimetric anomaly data using the Poisson's relation. The relief of basement was estimated from the downward continued pseudo-gravimetric anomaly data to the mean depth. In the process of data preparation, Tuckey and Harming filter was used to suppress the near surface effect of short wavelength. A band-pass filter was also applied before downward continuation. From the result of this study, it is appeared that the magnetic basement rock is ccmposed of mainly granite gneiss and depth to the basement rock is varied from 300m to 500m. The relief of magnetic basement is appeared to reflect the general topography in this area.

The circulation of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is simulated by means of the two layer numerical model with bottom topography: The circulation inside the Yellow Sea is mostly affected by the Kuroshio Current in the case without the wind stress exerting on the surface. The main current is trapped along the continental slope by the characteristics of geostrophy. The second strong current region is appeared from the southern coast of the Ghina to the Korea Straits, which is characterized the western boundary current. The circulation inside the Yellow Sea is rotated in clockwise direction even though its magnitude is negligibly small compare with the other current, for example, the tidal residual current.

인류는 오래 전부터 지구는 언제, 어떻게 만들어졌으며 또 그것은 어떻게 변해왔는가? 등 많은 의문을 가져왔다. 그리고 이와 같은 의문을 풀기 위한 한 방법으로 지구 내부 물질의 상태에 대해서 부단한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 그러나 지구 내부는 직접 관찰할 수 없는 곳이므로 간접적인 방법을 통해서만이 밝혀질 수 있다. 그래서 화산분출물이 분포하는 곳은 지구 내부의 상태를 연구하는데 좋은 대상이 된다. 제주도는 다량의 화산분출물이 분포하고, 특히 화산 형태가 원형 그대로 남아 있어 지질학을 위한 자연 학습장으로 최적의 곳이다. 본란에서는 제주도에서 학습될 수 있는 여러 학습 내용 중 몇 가지를 간략히 소개한다. 그리고, 좀더 자세한 내용은 본도에 대한 연구 문헌을 소개하니 참고하기 바란다.
