The present study has shown that the effect of boron and phosphorus in Ni-Cr-Si-X alloy to interfacial reactions and bonding strength of diamond-steel substrate, and the influence of various construction parameters on the formation of the topography of the tool. And these factors are required to making a good brazed tool. The microstructures and phase change of the brazed region were analyzed into SEM, EDS. According to the electron probe microanalysis, while brazing, the chromium present in the brazing alloy segregated preferentially to the surface of the diamond to form a chromium rich reaction product, which was readily wetted by the alloy.

When was added to Ti-excess ((Ba+Y)/Ti =1), the area occupied by ion was confirmed by its microstructure development, electrical conductivity behavior and lattice constant. Grain growth inhibition was observed when the content of donor dopant exceeded a critical value () in system. A donor-doped behavior was observed at various Y contents ( mol% Y) when was added to -excess . As Y content was increased, (002) and (200) peaks shifted to higher angles and the lattice constant (a and c axis) decreased gradually.

The microstructure and electrical conductivity of CNTs dispersed nanocomposites depending on the powder processing and CNTs content were demonstrated. The composite powders with homogeneous dispersion of CNTs could be synthesized by a catalytic route for direct formation of CNTs on nano-sized Fe dispersed powders. The sintered nanocomposite using the composite powder with directly synthesized CNTs showed homogeneous microstructure and enhanced elelctrical conductivity. The influence of powder processing on the properties of sintered nanocomposites was discussed by the observed microstructural features.

This paper presents a new approach for analyzing the microstructure of -reinforced aluminum matrix composites from digital images. Various samples of aluminum matrix composite were fabricated by hot pressing the powder mixtures with certain volume and size combinations of pure Al and SiC particles. Microstructures of the samples were analyzed by computer-based image processing methods. Since the conventional methods are not suitable for separating phases of such complex microstructures, some new algorithms have been developed for the improved recognition and characterization of the particles in the metal matrix composites.

Fabrication of bulk alloy has been performed through the consolidation of rapidly solidified ribbons. The bulk alloy exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high tensile yield strength of 530 MPa, and large elongation of 3 %. Microstructure of the alloy was characterized by equiaxed fine grains that consist of -Mg, long period ordered (LPO) structure phase, and -type cubic compound. The strengthening of the alloys may be due to fine grains with LPO structure phase and -type compound.

High heat-resistant Al-Fe-V-Si and Al-Fe-V-Si-X rapidly solidified powder metallurgy (RS P/M) alloys have been developed under well-controlled high purity argon gas atmosphere. The (at. %) RS P/M alloy exhibited high elevated-temperature strength exceeding 300 MPa and good ductility with elongation of 6 % at 573 K. Reduction of partical pressure in P/M processing atmosphere led to improvement in mechanical properties of the powder-consolidated alloys under elevated-temperature service conditions. Ti addition to the Al-Fe-V-Si conduced to enhancement of the strength at room temperature. The tensile yeild strength and ultimate strenght were 545 MPa and 722 MPa, respectively.

The effect of tempering temperature and microstructure on dry sliding wear behavior of quenched and tempered PM with 0.3% graphite and 1-2% Ni steels was investigated. The sintered specimens were quenched from 890℃ and then tempered at 200℃ and 600℃ for 1 hr. Wear tests were carried out on the quenched+tempered specimens under dry sliding wear conditions using a pin-on-disk type machine at constant load and speed. The experimental results showed that the wear coefficient effectively increased with increasing tempering temperature and decreased with increasing Ni content.

The microstructure of the extruded Al-20Si bars showed a homogeneous distribution of eutectic Si and primary Si particles embedded in the Al matrix. The grain size of α-Al varied from 150 to 600 nm and the size of the eutectic Si and primary Si in the extruded bars was about 100 - 200 nm. The room temperature tensile strength of the alloy with a powder size <26μm was 322 MPa, while for the coarser powder (45-106μm) it was 230 MPa. With decreasing powder size from 45-106μm to <26μm, the specific wear of all the alloys decreased significantly at all sliding speeds due to the higher strength achieved by ultrafine-grained constituent phases. The fracture mechanism of failure in tension testing and wear testing was also studied.

The injection molded Fe sintered bodies were fabricated using two kinds of nano Fe powders, Fe-5%vol.ZrO2 and Fe-10vol.%ZrO2 powders. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties depending on the ZrO2 contents and sintering temperature were characterized by SEM and TEM techniques. In the wear test, the Fe-0vol%ZrO2 sintered bodies showed mainly adhesive wear, but in the Fe-5%vol. ZrO2 and Fe-10vol. % ZrO2 composites the main wear behavior showed abrasive wear mode.

Tensile stress-strain and dynamic acoustic resonance tests were performed on Fe-C-Ni-Cu-Mo high-strength steels, characterized by a heterogeneous matrix microstructure and the prevalence of open porosity. All materials display the first yielding phenomenon and, successively, a continuous yielding behavior. This flow behavior can be described by the Ludwigson equation and developes through three stages: the onset of localized plastic deformation at the pore edges; the evolution of plastic deformation at the pore necks (where the austenitic Ni-rich phase is predominant); the spreading of plastic deformation in the interior of the matrix. The analytical modeling of the strain hardening behavior made it possible to obtain the boundaries between the different deformation stages.

Sintering behavior of the Fe-0.8Mn-0.5C powder system was studied on the specimens with a density of ~7.0 g/cc sintered at 11200C for 30 min in a gas mixture of 7%H2/93%N2 with the inlet dew point of -600C. During the atmosphere monitoring (CO/CO2-content and dew point) was showed, that carbothermical reduction occurs in two different temperature ranges; three peaks of dew point profile also can be distinguished during sintering cycle as well. Following sintering the Mn-content distribution and microstructures around the Mn-source were micro-analytical evaluated; the results showed that manganese travels through porous iron matrix up to ~60 μm.

Homogeneous microstructures of the PM compacts are difficult to attain when mixed elemental powders are used. This study examined the microstructures of pressed-and-sintered and MIM products that contain Ni and Mo.Ni-rich areas, which were lean in carbon and were soft and were found easily in regular specimens. Gaps or cracks near the Ni-rich or Mo-rich areas were also frequently observed. This problem worsened when Ni and Mo particles were large and were irregular in shape. By using ball milling treatment and ferroalloy powders, the microstructure homogeneity and mechanical properties were improved. The addition of 0.5wt%Cr further improved the distribution of Ni because Cr reduced the repulsion effect between nickel and carbon. With the elimination of Ni-rich areas, more bainites and martensites were formed and mechanical properties were significantly improved.

We successfully developed Al-Si-Transition Metal (TM) -Rare Earth (RE) Powder Metallurgy (P/M) alloy with fine microstructure, which has high strength at high temperature. This material was compacted rapidly solidified powder and directly consolidated by hot extruding or forging. Before consolidating, rapid heating was performed on powder compaction in order to keep the fine microstructure in powder state. We have also investigated the processing conditions of this new alloy by computing simulations and experiments.
