In this study, the Euro NCAP-based AEB system evaluation simulation was conducted by applying the calculated corrected TTC by road condition estimation of scenarios (CPFA, CPNC, CPLA) of the V2P situation scenario using PC-Crash, a program used for traffic accident analysis. The scenario was evaluated in consideration of the two road conditions. the low-speed conditions among every scenarios avoided collision, but in the medium and high-speed conditions has been collided with pedestrian. It was confirmed that the time point at recognizing pedestrian was lower than set TTC at which AEB system was operated, even though the AEB was operated immediately, a collision occurred due to insufficient braking distance. As in this study, if studies such as V2V, V2P, and V2B considering road friction are actively conducted, it is expected to be useful data for automobile accident prevention and accident analysis.

PURPOSES : The logistic roads for freight transport along to the new port of Busan have been suffered by the rapid weather changes including high temperature and torrential rain. As a result, the roads require annual repair, which have been distressed seriously by the heavy logistic and environmental loads. Therefore, we need to identify the cause of the road pavement distresses and find a proper design method to minimize the pavement distress in order to prohibit the problem aggravated. METHODS : The damaged conditions of the logistic roads were investigated on-site. In addition, applied pavement designs, real traffic volumes, and historical climatic information were intensively collected for this project. With the investigated and collected data Korean pavement design program (KPRP) was implemented to analyzed the causes of the damaged roads and conceive the pavement design draft optimized for the roads. RESULTS : According to the investigation and KPRP analysis, the traffic volume to transport freights impacts significantly the pavement distress, so that a higher PG grade binder type should be used, for which polymer modified asphalt (PMA) binders are recommended. Moreover, its pavement thickness should be increased to secure load bearing capacity, but thickening the pavement has been discouraged due to difficulties induced by the road-sectional change, especially road-height change. CONCLUSIONS : In conclusion, 5cm PMA overlay is suggested for the normal-scale maintenance, and 7cm PMA overlay for large-scale maintenance. Besides these, the application of Polymer-modified Stone Matrix Asphalt (PSMA) using PG76-22 binder would be the best preventive maintenance method, which has been well know as having higher fatigue resistant performance than general PMA. However, if we use PSMA, quality control should be very cautious since PSMA can be very susceptible premature distress if its production and construction are improperly proceeded.

PURPOSES : This study is performed first to define the aging of road facilities and to analyze the effects of environmental factors on the deterioration of median barriers. METHODS : The aging of road facilities is defined using an analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The first stage is associated with the period, facilities, and maintenance, whereas the second stage is associated with the details. The effects of environmental factors on the deterioration are analyzed by measuring the carbonation depth and compression strength. Two regions, i.e., Gangwon and Busan, are compared separately. Top, middle, and bottom samples are analyzed for both regions. RESULTS : Based on the result of the AHP analysis, weights for period (0.220), function (0.410), and maintenance (0.370) are derived. The average carbonation depths are 11.12 and 9.78 mm for Kangwon and Busan, respectively. The estimated values of compressive strength at Gangwon are 19.7 MPa (Wonju), 24.7 MPa (Samcheok A), and 25.9 MPa (Samcheok B), 20.2 MPa (Haeundae), 23.8 MPa (Yeongdo), and 29.5 MPa (Nam). CONCLUSIONS : The aging of road facilities is associated with subpar functionality and durability. Furthermore, the median barriers constructed in the Gangwon region deteriorated more significantly than those in the Busan region owing to environmental factors. In addition, the bottom samples are more affected by aging than the top samples.

Driving safety of a semi-trailer is greatly reduced when driving in a section with a narrow turning radius, so a dynamic study of driving and road conditions is required. In this study, the driving stability of the semi-trailer was investigated using the RecurDyn program in consideration of the velocity and weight of the semi-trailer in the entrance curve section of the highway, and the turning angle and radius of the curved road. In order to select the model and analysis conditions according to the road type, the sloping curved road was modeled by selecting the curvature, entry length, height difference, and entrance angle of the curved section. From the analysis results, the higher the semi-trailer's entrance velocity, the heavier the weight, the narrower the entrance angle of the curved road, and the smaller the curvature, the greater the semi-trailer's maximum running angular speed which had an effect on driving stability.

Road surfaces and tires have a great influence on road noise in automobiles. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the effect of changes in road surface and tire tread on road noise. For six road surfaces, road noise was measured and analyzed while changing two types of tire treads. In all frequency bands, the sound pressure of the road surface with a relatively large roughness was higher than that of other roads. And in the case of a road surface with relatively large pore, it was investigated that noise was reduced compared to other road surfaces due to the sound absorption effect in the low frequency area. On roads with irregular road roughness, the high sound pressure was exhibited in all frequency bands regardless of tire tread, indicating an increase in road noise due to irregular wear on roads. It was confirmed that the noise deviation due to the change in road surface was larger than the noise deviation due to the tire structure, and it is judged that noise research according to the structure and condition of the road surface.

In this study, the AEB system evaluation simulation was conducted by applying a corrected TTC from 0s to 3s obtained by estimating the road-friction factor and slope applying two scenarios(CCRs and CCRm) that may occur in V2V situation using PC-CrashⓇ, a program used for traffic accident analysis. As a result of two scenarios : At 0.8 of road-friction factor and 0° slope which adapted default model of TTC had longer braking distance so that it crashed. At 0.2 of road-friction factor with corrected TTC slidingly crashed due to slope and braking condition. CCRs and CCRm scenario showed that the maximum slipped distance of the collision avoidance situation was 31.7m, 87.7m. And the collision speed was 35.7km/h at 50km/h and 66.1km/h at 80km/h.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the road design elements affecting the lateral driving safety under high-speed driving conditions with a speed limit of 140 km/h and to derive useful implications to design of safer roads. METHODS : A full-scale driving simulator was used to evaluate the various design scenarios. Different regression techniques and a random forest method were adopted to conduct comprehensive comparisons among the simulation scenarios. The relationships between the safety indicators, including the frequency of the lane departures and the standard deviation of the lateral acceleration, and the design elements were explored in terms of lateral driving safety. RESULTS : The length of the combined alignment was found to be a significant factor affecting the lateral driving safety based on the analysis of the frequency of lane departures. Regarding the standard deviation of the lateral acceleration, it was identified that the length of the horizontal curve, the length of the bridge, and the right-side superelevation must be considered significant factors associated with driving safety while designing the road under high-speed driving conditions. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the findings of this study, a set of recommendations for designing roads was proposed. For example, the proper length of the combined alignment and the horizontal curve should be determined to prevent crashes due to hazardous lateral driving events because the installation of sufficient superelevation in the bridge section would be limited under high-speed driving conditions. In addition, applying a larger horizontal curve radius with longitudinal grooving is a promising approach to tackle risky driving conditions.

Along with the increase in demand for rescue services, the types of rescue services are also diversifying. Accordingly, rescue workers are exposed to various unpredictable dangerous situations, and the possibility of safety accidents is increasing, so the need for systematic management of safety accidents by rescue teams is emerging. It is necessary to present a roadmap for improving the quality of rescue services. An integrated technology roadmap tool that can be used immediately to improve structural quality was applied. The driving elements of the roadmap are composed of three elements that constitute the improvement of structural quality. It can be divided into safety management, professional competence and other (policy support) fields. This study intends to present a long-term and short-term roadmap by dividing it into safety management, professional competency, and other (policy support) fields.

PURPOSES : This study aims to develop and evaluate computer vision-based algorithms that classify the road roughness index (IRI) of road specimens with known IRIs. The presented study develops and compares classifier-based and deep learning-based models that can effectively determine pavement roughness grades. METHODS : A set road specimen was developed for various IRIs by generating road profiles with matching standard deviations. In addition, five distinct features from road images, including mean, peak-to-peak, standard variation, and mean absolute deviation, were extracted to develop a classifier-based model. From parametric studies, a support vector machine (SVM) was selected. To further demonstrate that the model is more applicable to real-world problems, with a non-integer road grade, a deep-learning model was developed. The algorithm was proposed by modifying the MNIST database, and the model input parameters were determined to achieve higher precision. RESULTS : The results of the proposed algorithms indicated the potential of using computer vision-based models for classifying road surface roughness. When SVM was adopted, near 100% precision was achieved for the training data, and 98% for the test data. Although the model indicated accurate results, the model was classified based on integer IRIs, which is less practical. Alternatively, a deep-learning model, which can be applied to a non-integer road grade, indicated an accuracy of over 85%. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, both the classifier-based, and deep-learning-based models indicated high precision for estimating road surface roughness grades. However, because the proposed algorithm has only been verified against the road model with fixed integers, optimization and verification of the proposed algorithm need to be performed for a real road condition.

PURPOSES : This study was conducted to prevent road thinning ice caused by abnormal weather conditions. METHODS : The appropriate amount of de-icer spread rate was verified by presenting the appropriate amount of snow removal agent spraying criteria for the thickness of the water film, owing to abnormal weather phenomena (fog, frost), and applying the standards to the site. Furthermore, we present a method to utilize residual salt, by quantifying the surface state changes according to the amount of deicer. RESULTS : Precautionary spread experiments to prevent road thin ice caused by abnormal weather conditions, indicated no freezing from 7.6g/m2 at 2℃-4℃ but 11.1g/m2 was suggested as a step higher considering external environmental variables. The amount of spraying was presented in two sections of rainfall(freezing rain). It is 17.7g/m2 at 0-7℃, 33.3g/m2 at -7~ -15℃, and 44.4g/m2 and 51.1g/m2 at non-urban, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : The criteria were divided into air temperature and road temperature standards, so that they could be distributed according to the temperature standards that meet the conditions, and the criteria presented were confirmed to be effective in preventing road thinning ice. If the road manager adopts Safety Line, which is suggested by utilizing the amount of residual salt on the road, it is believed that it can help determine the additional deicer.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to analyze the uniform diffusion mechanism of precursor gas species, and the effect of NOx reduction technology in a full-scale particulate matter testing facility, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). METHODS : A full-scale environment chamber was constructed to evaluate the effects of particulate matter reduction technologies on the road. CFD analysis was conducted to simulate the road environment conditions in the chamber, and investigate the effect of the NOx removal panel. The time required to reach the NOx concentration to target value in the fluid field was determined at a given inflow velocity, inlet direction, and initial inflow concentration. The effect of the NOx removal panel, and solar energy on the reduction characteristics of the NOx concentration in the environment chamber was analyzed. RESULTS : The inflow velocity was determined to be the major factor affecting the time required to reach a uniform target NOx concentration in the environment chamber. The inlet location in the transverse direction requires additional time to approach the uniform target concentration, than the longitudinal direction at the same inflow velocity. Based on the CFD analysis in the 1ppm concentration condition of the chamber, a two-fold increase in the NOx removal panel efficiency can reduce the time to target concentration by approximately 50%. It is also observed that a 20% increase in solar energy can decrease the time to target concentration by 4%–12% depending on the panel efficiency. CONCLUSIONS : This study proved that a full-scale environment chamber can be effectively utilized to evaluate the particulate matter reduction technologies applied in road facilities

PURPOSES : This study attempts to reveal the limitations of the current asset valuation methods for road infrastructure, based on national accounting standards. We proposed novel asset valuation methods, namely; the nearly land price and ratio-based method(NLP&R), and the consumption-based depreciation method(CBD). In addition, we verified the possibility of application through the research on the road network of Daejeon Metropolitan City. METHODS : This study proposes a novel re-evaluation method for road facilities. Regarding land, the authors proposed calculating the asset value, using the arithmetic average of the publicly announced land price of nearby land, located on both sides of the road section. For structures, a consumption-based depreciation(CBD) method that reflects the current condition level of structures was proposed. RESULTS : Owing to the application of the evaluation method for the current guidelines, land value was evaluated at 0.84-8.12 trillion won, pavement value at 8.75 trillion won, tunnel value at 0.26 trillion won, and bridge value at 2.09 trillion won. Owing to the application of the novel evaluation method proposed in this study on road facilities of Daejeon City, land value was estimated at 6.96 trillion won, tunnel value at 0.28 trillion won, and bridge value at 2.40 trillion won. CONCLUSIONS : We discovered that four current evaluation methods for land prices have some limitations that were over-or underestimated. However, in the case of the novel evaluation method proposed in this study, the value of land assets was estimated at 6.96 trillion won, by applying the nearly land price and ratio-based method. The road pavement was evaluated at approximately 8.75 trillion won, by applying the newly calculated re-procurement cost per unit in 2019. Bridges and tunnels using the new evaluation method were evaluated to be higher than the existing evaluation methods, because the current damaged condition of the facilities was reflected in the valuation. It was concluded that the proposed method is more objective and reliable than the current evaluation methods.

Assessment of noise exposed population is to check the environment noise level and social influence in order to reduce the risks such as annoyance and disturbance that are generated by environmental noise. Also, this method suggests the preferential noise abatement policy and action plan by accurately finding the area that the noise causes harmful effect to human health. Recently, a noise map, which can predict noise in comprehensive area, is used for the assessment of noise exposed population, breaking from the methods using existing measures. In particular, countermeasure for noise can be considered more effectively by using assessment methods of noise exposed population for specific noise level, area and building types which are the main input factors in noise maps. In this study, we propose noise prediction at traffic noise due to noise map.

PURPOSES : Accidents involving autonomous vehicle continue to occur. However, research on autonomous vehicle monitoring has been insufficient. The purpose of this study is to develop monitoring indicators from the perspective of vehicles and road infrastructure for the safe driving of autonomous vehicles. In addition, the purpose is to monitor autonomous vehicles and road environments using the monitoring indicators developed, as well as to analyze the characteristics of road sections where autonomous vehicles exhibit abnormalities. METHODS : Data from Pangyo Zero Shuttle, an autonomous vehicle, were used in this study. Infrastructure data installed in Pangyo Zero City were used. The data were collected from June 2019 to July 2019, during the normal driving period of the zero shuttle. The five monitoring indicators were developed by combining the vehicle operation information table collected from the V2X device of the zero shuttle and the road environment monitoring detail table collected from the infrastructure data with the road section table. In addition, an analysis of road characteristics with frequent errors is performed for each monitoring indicator. RESULTS : The three monitoring indicators from the perspective of the vehicle allowed monitoring of the sensor error, sensor communication error, and yaw rate error of the autonomous vehicle's timing and road section. In addition, the two monitoring indicators from the infrastructure perspective enabled the monitoring of events and road surface conditions on roads where autonomous vehicles drive. As a result of analyzing the road characteristics that frequently caused errors by monitoring indicators, sensor errors frequently occurred in the section waiting to enter the left-turn lane. Sensor communication errors are left-turn standby and have occurred frequently on road sections where U-turns are allowed. Finally, yaw rate error occurred frequently in sections of roads where there were no induction lines or where changes to lanes occurred frequently. CONCLUSIONS : The five monitoring indicators developed in this study allowed the monitoring of autonomous vehicles and roads. The results of this study are expected to help the safe driving of autonomous vehicles and contribute to the detection of autonomous driving abnormalities and the provision of real-time road condition information through further analysis.

PURPOSES : This study aims to deduce the appropriate interval of cross passage for small vehicle exclusive roads within urban underground roads to ensure safety. METHODS : This study evaluated evacuation safety by fire and evacuation simulations. The simulation was applied to a passenger-caronly urban underground road, which was performed in the entry/exit section with a gradient of 6.0% and the mainline on level grade. The values of the variables for the simulations were determined to be close to the actual situation based on of the statistics and the results of previous studies. In the simulation scenario, the cross passage interval was visible. The evacuation safety was evaluated by comparing the “evacuation completion time” and the “smoke diffusion time.” Evacuation safety can be desirable when the evacuation completion time is shorter than the smoke diffusion time. RESULTS : According to the results of the simulation, the desirable cross passage interval is 180 m for the entry/exit sections with a 6% gradient in passenger-car-only tunnels. This criterion may be prolonged to an interval of 210 m and a width of 0.9 m for the construction reduction, based on the results of the statistical analysis. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of this study, the risk indices of the “Small Vehicles Road Tunnel Fire Safety Facility Installation and Management Guidelines” may be supplemented by the tunnel class and the gradient of the entry/exit section. In addition, the guideline may provide an improved interval of evacuation cross passage and the width of the cross passage door by the safety index.

PURPOSES : The evaluation of the road pavement thickness in an apartment complex through a methodology for estimating the number of construction vehicles is presented. We also show the usability of the new design criteria. METHODS : A field survey plan was established by conducting literature and preliminary surveys, and the structural performance of each section of the road pavement was compared through a structural analysis program. The load on construction vehicles is required for analyzing the ESAL factors of construction vehicles; it is calculated as a methodology for estimating construction vehicles because it is difficult to measure the traffic volume through visual inspection. Accordingly, the extent of damage predicted by road pavement sections in apartment complexes was analyzed to examine the possibility of applying the methodology for estimating the number of construction vehicles. RESULTS : If the road crack exceeds 20% as a result of the site survey of a previous study, structural damage to the road pavement occurs from construction vehicles. Compared to the actual traffic volume observation, an error of 5% took place; therefore, it is necessary to perform a design such that the damage caused by the load of the construction vehicle be 15% or less for proper road performance. Structural analysis through the KENPAVE program showed that the damage caused by the load of the construction vehicle exceeded 20% in all sections except section B (with a thickness of 46 cm). CONCLUSIONS : Owing to the limitations of the test construction section and environmental conditions, it is necessary to assess the effects of various variables by conducting an analysis. This is expected to be applied as a design basis considering more reliable construction vehicles.
