Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) projects in South Korea starts with permanent shutdown of Kori unit 1 and Wolsung unit 1. It is important to establish a treatment and disposal method for radioactive waste generated during the decommissioning of the nuclear power plants. Large quantities of the wastes during decommissioning of NPP are generated in a short period of time and the wastes have various types and characteristics. For efficient decommissioning of NPP process, the radioactive waste is classified by types and each treatment method and packaging concept is presented respectively in this paper. Radioactive waste generated during decommissioning of NPP is classified into reactor vessel, reactor internals, metals, Dry Active Waste (DAW), concreate, spent fuel storage rack, spent resin and spent filter, etc., and the packaging concept for each type should be established to meet the waste acceptance criteria. Major waste acceptance criteria requirements include nuclides concentration, filling rate, free water, surface radiation does rate and weight. Radioactive waste containers can be classified into packaging containers, transport containers, and disposal containers. The packaging container is used to contain, transport, and store radioactive waste within the radiation control area, and a control number has been assigned as a radioactive waste drum after the final treatment has been completed. The transport container is used for transporting radioactive waste filled-containers from a radiation control area through an uncontrolled area. In this paper, the concept of disposal of dismantled radioactive waste and packaging methods were reviewed in comprehensive consideration of domestic radioactive waste transport and storage regulations, permanent disposal environment, and development status of large containers.

Kori Unit 1 was permanently shut down in 2017 and is preparing to be dismantled. Decommissioning nuclear power plants is expected to generate a lot of decommissioning waste. Therefore, a radioactive waste treatment complex will be built on the site to safely and effectively the process of decommissioning waste generated from the Kori Unit 1, and the details are specified in the decommissioning plan. Therefore, a safety assessment should be conducted according to the facility’s normal and abnormal operations to construct a radioactive waste treatment complex. Currently, a safety assessment for a radioactive waste treatment complex can be conducted by the Safety Assessment Framework (SAFRAN) Tool based on the Safety Assessment Driving Radioactive Waste Management Solutions (SADRWMS) methodology developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The SAFRAN Tool can be calculated radiation dose and hazard quotient (HQ) for workers and the public under normal and abnormal conditions of the radioactive waste treatment complex. When evaluating the radiation dose for the public due to releasing radioactive materials into the air or discharging radioactive materials into liquids, the radiation dose is calculated using the amount discharged or released from the treatment complex, and the Pathway Dose Factors (PDFs) derived from the generic environmental model given in the IAEA Safety Reports Series No.19. PDFs, which reflect the specific site data rather than the generic environmental model data, should be calculated and evaluated when performing the safety evaluation of the radioactive waste treatment complex to be built on the Kori site. In addition, in the SAFRAN tool, there is an inconvenience in that it must be calculated separately by radionuclides to calculate the contribution of dose or HQ for each radionuclide. Therefore, in this study, a safety assessment tool for a radioactive waste treatment complex was developed using Visual Basic by supplementing the limitations of the SAFRAN tool. This tool was developed to allow users to choose whether to apply PDFs based on the IAEA SRS-19 based on the generic environmental model or PDFs calculated to reflect the specific site data. Furthermore, the tool considered all types of decommissioning wastes that may occur during the decommissioning of the Kori Unit 1 and the treatment process scheduled to be introduced. Therefore, this study is expected to be used as basic data when conducting the safety assessment of radioactive waste treatment complex scheduled to be introduced in Korea.

The nuclear facilities at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) have generated a variety of liquid radioactive waste and most of them have low-level radioactive or lower levels. Some of the liquid radioactive waste generated in KAERI is transported to Radioactive Waste Treatment Facility (RWTF) in 20 L container. Liquid radioactive waste transported in a 20 L container is stored in a Sewer Tank after passing through a solid-liquid separation filter. It is then transferred to a very low-level liquid radioactive waste Tank after removing impurities such as sludge through a pre-treatment device. The previous pre-treatment process involved an underwater pump and a cartridge filter device passively, but this presented challenges such as the inconvenience of having to install the underwater pump each time, radiation exposure for workers due to frequent replacement of the cartridge filter, and the generation of large amounts of radioactive waste from the filter. To address these challenges and improve efficiency and safety in radiation work, an automated liquid radioactive waste pre-treatment device was developed. The automated liquid radioactive waste pre-treatment device is a pressure filtration system that utilizes multiple overlapping filter plates and pump pressure to effectively remove impurities such as sludge from liquid radioactive waste. With just the push of a button, the device automatically supplies and processes the waste, reducing radiation hazards and ensuring worker safety. Its modular and mobile design allows for flexible utilization in various locations, enabling efficient pre-treatment of liquid radioactive waste. To evaluate the performance of the newly constructed automated liquid radioactive waste treatment device, samples were taken before and after treatment for 1 hour cycling and analyzed for turbidity. The results showed that the turbidity after treatment was more than about four times lower than before treatment, confirming the excellent performance of the device. Also, it is expected that the treatment efficiency will improve further as the treatment time and number of cycles increase.

Thermal treatment, such as combustion, is the most effective way to solve the spatial problem of radioactive waste disposal. Existing incineration technology has the problem of discharging harmful pollutants (CO2 and dioxin, etc.) into the environment. Therefore, it was evaluate the validity of the thermal treatment process that can reduce the volume of dry active waste (DAW) in an eco-friendly. In addition, the stability of the alternative incineration process under development was evaluated by evaluating the emission of harmful pollutants to the environment during the thermal treatment process. We selected 14 samples identical to those discarded by each nuclear power plant (Kori, Saeul, Wolsong, Hanbit, Hanul). And EA (Elemental Analysis) analysis was performed on each sample. As a result, excluded samples containing wastes containing POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) such as PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls), which could generate harmful pollutants during thermal treatment, and halogenated organic wastes such as PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). In addition, the thermal treatment conditions for the four DAWs were derived by Thermogravimetric Analysis/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA) analysis. At this time, Py-GC/MS analysis was performed at the temperature at which each waste causes thermal decomposition (cotton is 437°C, paper is 562°C, latex glove is 430°C, plastic bag is 485°C). As a result of analyzing the exhaust gas produced during thermal decomposition, about 77.0% of the cotton was Benzoic acid series, the paper was 41.1% Glucopyranose series, and 15.8% hydroxy acetaldehyde. Latex glove was identified to be 45.9% and 19.2% for Limonene and 2-methyl-1, 3-Butadiene, and for plastic bags, Octacosanol and 2-octyl-1-Dodecanol were 38.8% and 15.2%. In addition, it was confirmed that dioxin and harmful heavy metals, which are discussed as environmental risks, were not detected in all samples.

Mixed-bed ion exchange resin consist of anion exchange resin and cation exchange resin is used to treat liquid radioactive waste in nuclear power plants. C-14 from heavy water reactors (HWR) is adsorbed on the anion exchange resin and is considered intermediate-level radioactive waste. The total amount of radioactivity of C-14 in spent ion exchange resin exceeds the activity limits for the disposal facility. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the radioactivity through pre-treatment. There are thermal and non-thermal methods for the treatment of spent ion exchange resin. However, destructive methods have the problem of emitting off-gas containing radionuclides. To solve this challenge, various methods have been developed such as acid stripping, PLO process, activity stripping, thermal treatment and others. In this study, spent ion exchange resin (spent resin) was treated using microwave. The reaction characteristics of the resin to microwave were used to selectively remove the C-14 on the functional groups. Simulated spent anion exchange resin and spent resin from Wolseong NPP were treated with the microwave method, and the desorption rate was over 95%. An integrated process system of 1 kg/batch was built to produce operating data. After the operation of the process, characterization and evaluation of post-treatment for condensate water and adsorbent used in the process were performed. When the process system was applied to treat simulated spent resin and real spent resin, both showed a desorption rated of more than 97%. It means that the C-14 was successfully removed from the radioactive spent resin.

The spent fuel storage canister is generally made of austenitic stainless-steel and has the role of an important barrier to encapsulate spent fuels and radioactive materials. Canister near coastal area has welding lines, which have high residual tensile stresses after welding process. Interaction between austenitic stainless steel and chloride environment forms detrimental condition causing chloride induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC) in canister. Reducing or eliminating tensile stress on canister can significantly decrease probability of crack initiation. Surface stress improvement works by inducing plastic strain which results in elastic relaxation that generates compressive stresses. Surface stress improvement methods such as burnishing process can effectively prevent for CISCC of canister surfaces. In this study, burnishing treatment has been evaluated to control residual tensile stress practically applicable to atmospheric CISCC for aging management of steel canisters. Burnishing process was selected as a prevention technology to CISCC of stainless steel canisters to improve resistance of CISCC through enhancement of surface roughness and generation of compressive residual stress. SUS 316 SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) specimens were burnished with flat roller and round roller after manufactured and assembled on CNC machine using base plate. The burnishing test results showed that the surface roughness of SUS 316 SAW welded specimens after roller burnishing of pass No. 5 was improved with 85% with flat roller and 93% with round roller, individually. Surface roughness showed the best state when burnished at pressure of 115 kgf, feeding rate of 40 m/stroke and pass No. of 5 turns with round roller. The surface of SUS 316 SAW welded specimens had much high residual compressive stress than yield stress of SUS 316 materials with roller burnishing treatment, independently of kinds of roller. The surface of the welded specimen by round roller burnishing showed smaller compressive stress and deeper stress region than in the surface of flat round roller burnishing. The roller burnished canister with good surface roughness could reduce the number of crack initiation sites and the high residual compressive stress formed on the welded surface might prevent the crack initiation by reducing or eliminating tensile residual stress in the weld zone, finally leads to excellent CISCC resistance. The crack growth behavior of SUS 316 welded specimens will need to investigate to evaluate the corrosion integrity of the canister materials under chloride atmosphere according to burnishing treatment.

This study selected the optimal conditions for enzyme treatment that can promote the extraction of functional components from Salvia plebeia (SP) and confirmed solubilization characteristics, functional component contents, and applicability evaluation in pilot-scale, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory activity. The optimal conditions of pectinase, 1%, and 2 h (P) were determined through the enzyme treatment of SP. The water-soluble index and total polyphenol content were the highest in P compared to 100oC reflux condition for 2 h (CON). Component analysis performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that flavonoid contents were increased 6.6-9.5 times in the P compared to CON. There was no difference in component content when comparing the measurement lab-scale and pilot scale. CON and P indicated cytoprotective effect against H2O2-induced RAW 264.7 cells. CON and P pre-treatment also reduced the production of nitric oxide and proinflammatory cytokines in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, P showed higher antioxidant and anti-inflammation activities than CON. These results suggested that P has a higher concentration of bioactive compounds through enzyme treatment than that obtained from CON. Thus, it can be used as a primary material for industrial utilization, such as developing functional food materials using SP.

3D printing is widely used in product development and prototype manufacturing, and is expected to become universal across various industries with the development of 3D printing-related technologies. However, parts made by Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) 3D printing using the commonly used stacking manufacturing process, show low tensile strength and hardness. The decreased mechanical properties of these parts limit their use as structural elements. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between ultrasonic treatment of PLA parts produced by FDM 3D printing and their mechanical properties. Specifically, we analyze the effects of ultrasonic annealing on the mechanical properties of PLA parts using the tensile test specimen.

Codonopsis lanceolata (S. et Z.) Trautv. is mainly cultivated in Korea and China as a medicinal crop. C. lanceolata is difficult to produce plug seedlings in the summer, because C. lanceolata has a low germination rate and is vulnerable to high temperatures. Cold treatment is effective in breaking dormancy of seeds and increasing the germination rate. Shading cultivation can control the solar irradiance received by plants and reduce the damage by high temperatures and strong light. This study was conducted to examine the appropriate cold treatment period for the improving germination of C. lanceolata, and shading level during the summer seedling period. Cold treatment experiments were conducted for 0 (control), 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks at 4°C before sowing. In the shading experiment, C. lanceolata was grown for 45 days with 0 (non-treatment), 45, 75% shading levels. Cold treatment for one week significantly improved the germination energy. The plant height, leaf area, and fresh and dry weights of C. lanceolata seedlings were significantly increased under the 45% shading level. Total root length, root surface area, and the number of root tips were significantly higher in shading treatment (45 and 75%) than in non-treatment. The C. lanceolata seedling’s compactness and Dickson’s quality index were the highest at 45% shading level. Therefore, these results recommended sowing C. lanceolata after cold treatment for one week at 4°C, and 45% shading level could stably culture C. lanceolata plug seedlings during the high temperature period.

AZO/Cu/AZO thin films were deposited on glass by RF magnetron sputtering. The specimens showed the preferred orientation of (0002) AZO and (111) Cu. The Cu crystal sizes increased from about 3.7 nm to about 8.5 nm with increasing Cu thickness, and from about 6.3 nm to about 9.5 nm with increasing heat treatment temperatures. The sizes of AZO crystals were almost independent of the Cu thickness, and increased slightly with heat treatment temperature. The residual stress of AZO after heat treatment also increased compressively from -4.6 GPa to -5.6 GPa with increasing heat treatment temperature. The increase in crystal size resulted from grain growth, and the increase in stress resulted from the decrease in defects that accompanied grain growth, and the thermal stress during cooling from heat treatment temperature to room temperature. From the PL spectra, the decrease in defects during heat treatment resulted in the increased intensity. The electrical resistivities of the 4 nm Cu film were 5.9 × 10-4 Ω ‧ cm and about 1.0 × 10-4 Ω ‧ cm for thicker Cu films. The resistivity decreased as the temperature of heat treatment increased. As the Cu thickness increased, an increase in carrier concentration resulted, as the fraction of AZO/Cu/AZO metal film increased. And the increase in carrier concentration with increasing heat treatment temperature might result from the diffusion of Cu ions into AZO. Transmittance decreased with increasing Cu thicknesses, and reached a maximum near the 500 nm wavelength after being heat treated at 200 °C.

In order to investigate the optimal UVB (ultraviolet B) treatment conditions for vitamin D2 enhancement of freeze-dried ear mushroom, sample size (below 300 μm~whole), UV treatment temperature (30~60℃), treatment density (6.25~50.0 mg/cm2) and the samples mixing frequency (1~32 times) were treated differently. After that, chromaticity, vitamin D2 and ergosterol (vitamin D2 precursor) contents were investigated. As a result of the investigating, effective UVB treatment conditions for vitamin D2 enhancement are as follows. The sample sizes were 2~4 mm and finely crushed pieces. The treatment temperatures were 50℃ and 60℃. The treatment density was 12.5 to 25.0 mg/cm2, and the number of sample mixing was 8 times or more. As the amount of vitamin D2 increased by UVB treatment, the ergosterol content generally tended to decrease. However, under some UVB treatment conditions, the vitamin D2 content was not high despite the decrease of ergosterol content. Under the conditions set in this experiment, it was possible to obtain ear mushrooms with enhanced vitamin D2 up to 26,968.7 μg/100 g. Therefore, it is thought that the ear mushroom is highly likely to be used as a vitamin D source and nutritionally fortified food ingredient.

The emergence of micropollutants in natural water sources due to the overuse of anthropogenic chemicals in industry and households has threatened the production of clean and safe tap water in drinking water treatment plants. Conventional physicochemical processes such as coagulation/flocculation followed by sand filtration are not effective for the control of micropollutants, whereas chemical oxidation processes (applying chlorine, permanganate, ozone, etc.) are known to be promising alternatives. Determining the optimum oxidant dose is important issue related to the production of disinfection by-products as well as unnecessary operating cost, and is made possible by simulations of target-micropollutant abatement based on kinetic model equation consisting of second-order rate constant (between the oxidant and the target) and oxidant exposure. However, the difficulty in determining oxidant exposure as a function of complex water quality parameters limits the field application of kinetic model equation. With respect to representative oxidants used in drinking water treatment plants, this article reviews two main approaches for determining oxidant exposure: i) direct measurement in situ and ii) prediction by empirical models based on key water quality parameters. In addition, we discussed research requirements to improve the predictive accuracy of the empirical models for oxidant exposure and to develop a rational algorithm to determine optimal oxidant dose by considering the priority of the target pollutants to be treated.
