We evaluated the larvicidal activity of 20 plant essential oils and components from ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi) and Peru balsam (Myroxylon pereira) oils against Aedes aegypti. Of the 20 plant essential oils, ajowan and Peru balsam oils at 0.1 mg/mL exhibited 100% and 97.5% larval mortality, respectively. At this same concentration, the individual constituents, (+)-camphene, benzoic acid, thymol, carvacrol, benzyl benzonate and benzyl trans-cinnamate caused 100% mortality. The toxicity of blends of constituents identified in 2 active oils indicated that thymol and benzyl benzoate were major contributors to the larvicidal activity of the artificial blend. We also tested the acute toxicity of these 2 active oils and their major constituents against the water flea, Daphnia magna. Peru balsam oil and benzyl trans-cinnamate were the most toxic to D. magna. Two days after the treatment, residues of ajowan and Peru balsalm oils in water were 36.2% and 85.1%, respectively. Less than 50% of benzyl trans-cinnamate and thymol were detected in the water at 2 days after treatment. Our results show that the essential oils of ajowan and Peru balsam and some of their constituents have potential as botanical insecticides against Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae.

The effect of pt-I values of 6.5, 6.0, 5.0, and 4.0 on spore germination of Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) was investigated at water activity (a%) values of 0.98, 0.96, 0.94, and 0.90 in a controlled medium at 30°C for 7 days. The best condition for germination of spores of B. cereus was observed at pH 6.5 with aw 0.98. No matter what combination of a and pH is used, a complete inhibition of spore germination was achieved at either a,.. value of 0.90 or pH value of 4.0. Spore germination was also delayed or inhibited at aw 0.98 with pH 4.0, aw 0.96 with pH 5.0, and aw 0.94 with pH 6.5, 6.0, 5.0, or 4.0. The results indicate that the combined inhibitory effects of pH and water activity on the germination of B. cereus spores in controlled medium could be applied to food preservation.

Hot water soluble extract was prepared from Hericium erinaceus and its neuritogenic activity on PC12h cells was analyzed, which is a clone originating from a rat pheochromocytomon. The freeze dried hot water extract showed a moisture content of 12.08%. The extract was mainly composed of crude protein (24.04%) followed by crude fat (0.26%), dietary fiber (5.09%,) carbohydrate (51.24%) and ash (12.18%). Fatty acids, glucan and inorganic constituents were found as minor components. The neuritogenic activity of hot water extract was evaluated under microscope by monitoring of neurite outgrowth in PC12h cells and by measuring the neurite length of induvidual cells. The extract exhibited strong induction neurite outgrowth in a does-dependent manner from 0.01 mg/ml to 1 mg/ml, in which longer neurite outgrowth was observed as the treatment dose increased. The result was compared similar effect of nerve growth factor(NGF) on tested cells.

Optimization study of the hot water extraction for enhancing antioxidative activity from Auricularia auricula was performed by Taguchi approach using orthogonal matrix L9(34) method. The correlation between DPPH radical scavenging activity and the components of samples extracted from different extraction conditions were also analyzed. The correlation coefficient between DPPH radical scavenging activity and melanin content of A. auricula was 0.93, indicating 'good correlation'. The optimum extraction conditions were obtained at the extraction time of 1 hr. temperature of 85oC, solid: water ratio of 1: 40(w/v) and frequency of 2 times. Under these conditions, values of maximum DPPH free radical scavenging activity and melanin contents of A. auricula were 67.21±2.17 and 52.94±2.10 mg/g, respectively. Melanin content of 1.6 times and DPPH free radical scavenging effect of 130% were enhanced by optimization.

Antioxidant activities of Hericium erinaceum was in vestigated in subfractions of methanol extract such as hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and water subfractions. Chlorofrom fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and showed the highest level of total phenolic contents. The level of total phenolics may be correlated with the antioxidant activities of the subfractions. Therefore, the phenolic compound in the chloroform subfractions exhibiting high antioxidant acticity was identified by mass spectrometry using LC-MS/MS. In addition, hot water extract of this mushroom were tested for antimutagenic activity by Ames Salmonellaassay.Thisextractshowed inhibitiory effect on the mutagenesis induced in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 and TA98 by the directly actingmutagen 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(0.15μg/plate) and sodium azide (0.5μg/plate). The extract also inhibited mutagenesis induced in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 and TA98 by the indirectly actingmutagen 2-aminoanthracen(2μg/plate) at 5000μg/plate and 200 μg/plate, respectively.

The purpose of current study was to examine bioaccessibility of antioxidant activity and total phenolic content in each part of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.). In vitro biomimicking system simulated human digestive fluid was employed in order to measure bioavailable anti-oxidative effect and phenolic content. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content was measured by using the DPPH method and the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, respectively. Stem of water spinach had a higher DPPH free radical scavenging effect (5.43 mg/mL for IC50) than leaf (5.95 mg/mL for IC50), while leaf had a greater level of total phenolic content (287.45 μg GAE/mL) than stem (216.45 μg GAE/mL). Bioaccessible antioxidant capacity and digestive stability of total phenolic content showed a similar pattern to what found in raw materials. Our result also indicated that total phenolic content was not found to be a major marker for prediction of antioxidant activity. It is plausible that other constituents such as vitamin E and C in water spinach could be contributors for antioxidant activities.

The objective of this study was to examine the quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of yogurt containing hot water extract from maca. Four different levels (0, 4, 8, 12%) of maca extract were added to milk followed by fermentation with lactic acid bacteria at 37℃ for 12 hrs, and then the physicochemical properties of the samples were investigated. During 7 days of storage at 4±1℃, the acid production (pH and titratable acidity) of the yogurt increased with the addition of maca extract. The Hunter L value (lightness) decreased, while the b value (yellowness) increased as the maca extract level in the yogurt increased. Viable cell counts were not significantly different among the samples. The results of consumer acceptance tests showed that no significant differences in overall acceptability were observed between the yogurts containing 4% and 8% of maca extract and a control yogurt. The yogurt containing maca extract exhibited higher DPPH radical and superoxide anion radical scavenging activities than the control yogurt over the storage period.

The larvicidal activities of 11 Myrtaceae essential oils and their components against Aedes aegypti were tested by the immersion method. We also tested the acute toxicity of 4 active oils and their components against the water flea, Daphnia magna. Further, the aqueous residues of these oils and their components were determined at 2 and 7 days after suspending in water. Among the 11 oils tested, 0.1 mg/mL of Melaleucalinariifolia, M. dissitiflora, M. quinquenervia, and Eucalyptus globulus oils showed strong larvicidal activity against A. aegypti. Among the test compounds, allyl isothiocyanate, γ-terpinene, p-cymene, (+)-limonene, (-)-limonene, γ-terpinene, and (E)-nerolidol showed strong larvicidal activity against A. aegypti. The acute toxicity test revealed M. linariifolia was the most toxic to D. magna. Among test compounds, allyl isothiocyanate was the most toxic to D. magna. Two days after treatment, the residues of M. dissitiflora, M. linariifolia, M. quinquenervia, and E. globulus oils in water were 55.4, 46.6, 32.4, and 14.8%, respectively. Low concentrations of allyl isothiocyanate, γ -terpinene, p-cymene, (-)-limonene, (+)-limonene, and γ-terpinene were detected in the water at 2 days after treatment. Therefore, Myrtaceae essential oils and their components could be developed as control agents against mosquito larvae.

Copper alloy metal fiber was incorporated into the conventional water-soluble metal working fluids to increase the antimicrobial activity. Fluid treated by copper alloy metal fiber is shown that bacteria is disappeared whereas that untreated metal fiber is increased bacteria as increasing the life time. When the electrochemical potential of Cu/Zn ion is -268mV, radicals with molecular oxygen are easily made. Especially, hydroperoxide radical shows strong toxicity to the strains, leading to the conformational change of plasma membrane. As a result antimicrobial activity of copper alloy metal fiber in metal working fluid is superior to that of copper fiber.

This study is focused on the possibility of copper alloy metal fiber for an antimicrobial activity in the water soluble metal working fluids. Electrochemical potential of Cu/Zn ion is -268mV, and easily makes radicals with molecular oxygen. Especially, hydroperoxide radical shows strong toxicity to the strains. Plasma membrane causes conformational change when hydroperoxide radical binds to plasma membrane. Elution of copper ion from copper alloy metal fiber is detected in metal working fluid. As a result antimicrobial activity of copper alloy metal fiber in metal working fluid is superior to that of copper fiber.

Excess enthalpies (HE) were measured by isothermal flow calorimetry for the nonionic amphiphile 2-butoxyethanol/water mixtures at 10 different temperatures (48.5 to 70℃) around and above the lower consolute solution temperature, Tlc. HE exhibits U-shape for the binary mixtures, and is large and negative which reflects substantial interaction between two chemical species. When the commonly used, semi-empirical Redlich-Kister (RK) polynomials were fitted to the measured HE, plots of HE vs. weight fraction provided more accurate fitting with fewer parameters than conventionally drawn HE vs. mole fraction plots. This was due to the enhanced symmetry of HE vs. weight fraction plots. Using the fitted Redlich-Kister polynomials and the Gibbs-Helmholtz relation, temperature dependence of the activity coefficients were found and compared to the values determined from vapor-liquid equilibria. The activity coefficients were in the range of one to three, indicating that the binary system deviates from ideality but not substantially. They slightly depended on temperature and the temperature effect was equivalent to 10 % change in the activity coefficients.
