        In order to obtain spherical fine powder, we have developed a new method of high-pressure water atomization system using swirl water jet with the swirl angle . The effect of nozzle apex angle upon the morphology of atomized powders was investigated. Molten copper was atomized by this method, with rad (swirl water jet) and rad (conical water jet). It was found that the median diameter of atomized powders decreased with decreasing down to 0.35 rad in each , but under θ<0.35 rad, increased abruptly with decreasing for rad, while it was still decreased with decreasing for rad.

        The spherical and high quality Titanium fine powder "Tilop" has been produced with gas atomization furnace, Sumitomo Titanium Corporation originally designed. Recently, a new process which can produce Ti-alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) powders by utilizing our gas atomization process, of which raw material is sponge titanium pre-mixed with alloy chips or granules has been also developed. The particle size of gas atomized Ti-alloy powder and the mechanical properties of sintered Ti-alloy compacts prepared by metal injection molding were discussed in this study.

        Hybrid atomization is a new atomization technique that combines gas atomization with centrifugal atomization. This process can produce fine, spherical powders economically with a mean size of about 10 m diameter and a tight size distribution.

        Based on theoretical analysis, a new general equation of mean particle size applicable to both conventional atomization methods and new atomization processes is presented. In gas atomization, it is equivalent with and can be changed into Lubanska Equation. In centrifugal atomization, it can be changed into the equations that are currently the most widely used. In water atomization, it is similar to the equation proposed by Grandzol and Tallmadge. According to the universal equation, new correlations for mean particle size in novel atomization processes such as Hybrid Atomization and Multistage Atomization were proposed and agreed with our experimental data well.

        An update and the latest results on molten metal atomization using a Pressure-Gas-Atomizer will be given. This atomizer combines a swirl-pressure atomizer, to generate a liquid hollow cone film and a gas atomizer to atomize the film and/or the fragments of the film. The paper is focused on powder production, but this atomization system is also applicable for deposition purposes. Different alloys (Sn, SnCu) were atomized to study the characteristics of the Pressure-Gas-Atomizer.

        In Spray Forming, specific enthalpy is a key parameter in the deposition process as it influences the thermal condition of the impinging droplets as well as that of the deposit surface. An empirical model for the distribution of specific enthalpy in the spray cone was developed as an easy to handle alternative to numerical models with which the descriptive partial differential equations are solved numerically. The model results were compared with the experimental data to validate its applicability.

        In order to improve mechanical properties, the hypereutectic Al-20 wt%Si based prealloy powder was prepared by gas atomization process. Microstructure and compressibility of the atomized Al-Si powder were investigated. The average powder size was decreased with increasing the atomization gas pressure. Size of primary Si particles of the as-atomized powder was about . The as-atomized Al-Si powder such as AMB 2712 and AMB 7775 to increase compressibility and sinterability. Relative density of the mixed powder samples sintered at was reached about 96% of a theoretical density.

        The microstructure and mechanical properties of the hypereutectic prealloyed Al-Si powders prepared by the gas atomization process were described in this paper. With increasing the gas pressure of the atomization, the average powder size was decreased from about . The primary eutectic Si particles were uniformly distributed in the Al matrix and their size varied in the range of . The high densified specimens with above 96% of the theoretical density were fabricated the hot pressing process. The UTS mechanical properties of VN1 specimens were much higher than that of conventional hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys.

        Ti-45.2at.%Ni-5at.%Cu and Ti-40.2at.%Ni-10atat.%Cu alloy powders were fabricated by gas atomization process. The microstructures, Shape, hardness and phase transformation behaviors of the powders were investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness measurement, x-ray diffraction analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. The hardness of the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders decreased as Cu-content increased. The x-ray diffraction analyses were carried out for powders without heat treatment, and those that treated at 85 for an hour in a vaccum state( torr) and then quenched into ice water. The intensity of B phase increased with heat treating. The monoclinic B martensite was formed in the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders during cooling.

        원심 분무법으로 제조된 P/M 2011 AI 합금 압출재의 절삭성을 조사하였다. 압출재 내에 분포된 Pb-Bi 입자들은 매우 균일하고 미세하게 분포된다. 절삭속도가 증가할수록 미세한 칩이 생성되며 이송량이 0.1mm/rev 이하에서부터는 연속칩이 생성된다. 표면의 상태는 이송량에 크게 의존하며 절삭깊이와 절삭속도에는 크게 의존하지 않는다. 불연속칩은 분산된 AI2O3입자와 공정 Pb-Bi 개재물의 존재로 인해서 생성된다.

        Atomizing mode and powder characteristics of CuA1Ni base shape memory alloy in rotating disk atomization were investigated in accordance with disk materials and additional elements. Produced powders were classified into two types of spherical and flake shape. In the case of CuAlNiBTi and CuAlNiZr alloy, high yield rate and fine powder were obtained. This tendency was same when we used oxide coated disks. We concluded that this results were steno from the wetting characteristics change between molten metal and disk surface. Especially, due to the reactive properties of Ti and Zr with ceramic disk, the change of atomizing appearance and powder characteristics were noticeable.

        Two kinds of powders and dispersed nuclear fuel meats have been prepared by conventional comminution process and a newly developed rotating disk atomization process. In contrast to angular shape and broad size distribution of the conventionally processed powder, the atomized powder was spherical and showed narrow size distribution. For the atomized powder, the heat treatment time for the formation of by a peritectoid reaction was reduced to about one tenth, thanks to microstructure refinement by rapid cooling of about 5104 K/s. The extruding pressure of atomized powder and Al powder mixture was lower than that of comminuted and Al powder mixture. The elongation of the atomization processed fuel meats was much higher than that of the comminution processed fuel meats and remained over 10% up to 80wt.% of powder fraction in the fuel meats. It appears therefore that the loading density of in fuel meat can be increased by using atomized powder. The atomized spherical particles were randomly distributed, while the comminuted particles with angular and longish shape were considerably aligned along the extrusion direction. Along the transverse direction of the extraction the electrical conductivity of the atomization processed fuel meats was appreciably higher than that of comminution processed fuel meats. This tendency became pronounced as content increased. Because the thermal conduction which is believed to be proportioned to the electrical conduction in the nuclear fuel meats occurs in radial direction, the atomization processed fuel can be better used in research reactors where high thermal conductivity is required.
