         A new gerbera variety ‘Yellow Wing’ was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2007. A cross was made between ‘Gold Finger’ with yellow and single and ‘Yellow Springs’ with yellow and spider in 2004. After investigation of the characteristics for 4 years (from 2004 to 2007), it was selected specially for the use of cut-flower. ‘Yellow Wing’ is a vigorous cultivar with yellow (RHS YO14B), green center and spider type. The flower diameter is 10.6cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter is 2.83cm and 2.03cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height and brilliant color. We believe that ‘Yellow Wing’ has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivar and increasing farmers-income.

         A new naked oat cultivar ‘hoyang’(Avena sativa L.) was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2007. It was derived from a cross between ‘ikyonggwiri’and ‘wiri23’ The cultivar, Sikyonggwiri is early heading while the breeding line Gwiri23 has a high yielding potential with large-size grain. Bulk method combined with pedigree selection program was employed in subsequent generations, and the promising line SO96025-B-303- 44-2-5 was selected for agronomic performance in 2002. The line showed both high yield and good husking rate of seed in the Yield Trial tested at Suwon in 2003 to 2004, and was subsequently designated as ‘wiri57’ Gwiri57 was evaluated for winter hardiness, earliness, and yield in four locations, Gimje, Iksan, Jeongeup and Jinju from 2005 to 2007 and was released as Choyang. Choyang headed 11 days earlier and matured 5 days earlier than the check cultivar ‘unyang’in the paddy field condition. The new cultivar Choyang had 97 cm of culm length and 23.4 cm of spike length, 658 spikes per m2, 75 grains per spike, 28.8 g of 1,000-grain weight, and 636 g of test weight. Choyang showed better winter hardiness than that of the check cultivar Sunyang, and similar seed quality to the check cultivar in respect to crude protein (12.9%) and β-glucan content (4.7%). However, it showed higher husking rate than the check cultivar. The grain yield of Choyang in the regional yield trial for 3 consecutive years was averaged 4.67 MT ha-1, which was 38% higher than that of the check cultivar Sunyang. Choyang is recommended for the fall sowing cropping only in the southern area where daily minimum mean temperatures are averaged higher than -4℃ in January, and is not recommended the in mountain area where frost damage is presumable.

        A new whole crop silage barley cultivar, “oungyang” was developed from the cross between “unong and Milyang55 at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2002. An elite line, YB3882-3B-17-1-3-1, was selected in 1999 and designated as “ilyang111” It showed good agronomic performance in the regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 2000 to 2002 and was released by the name of “oungyang”with higher yield and better animal feed quality than that of Olbori. The average heading and maturing dates of Youngyang were May 2 and June 6, which were late by 2 & 1 days than those of Olbori, respectively, in Suwon. Youngyang had longer culm length, 83cm but it had lesser spikes per m2 637 than that of Olbori, respectively, in RYT from 2000 to 2002. The rate of leaf sheath/whole length (culm+leaf) and the rate of the grains/ whole crop weight was similar to Olbori. It showed resistance to BaYMV at the regions of Naju, Jinju, Milyang andt Iksan. however, the response of Youngyang to other environmental stresses (tolerance of cold and wet) was similar to Olbori. The dried whole crop yield potential of Youngyang in the RYT was about 11.67 MT/ha in paddy fields which was about 18% higher than that of Olbori. The grain yield potential was 6.32 MT/ha in paddy fields which was about 5% higher than that of Olbori. Youngyang had lower rate of shattering, higher content of protein and NDF, lower ADF and TDN, and better quality of silage than those of Olbori.

         A new sprout-soybean cultivar, “oseo”was developed at the Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI) in 2007. Hoseo was selected from a cross between Camp and Nattosan. The preliminary, advanced, and regional yield trials to evaluate the performance of Iksan 57 were carried out from 2003 to 2007. This cultivar has a determinate growth habit with purple flower, grayish brown pubescence, yellow seed coat, grayish brown hilum, rhomboid leaflet shape and small seed size (7.4 g/100 seeds). The maturity date of “oseo”is 12 days earlier than the check variety, “ungsan” It has good seed quality for soybean-sprout and resistance to lodging. This cultivar has resistance to soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and necrotic symptom (SMV-N). The average yield of “oseo”was 2.51 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials (RYT) for double cropping carried out for three years from 2005 to 2007.

        A new covered barley variety, “eungangbori”was developed from the cross between Milyang 55 which have lodging tolerance and easy brittleness and Suweon 260 with good quality by barley breeding team in the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2002. A promising line, YMB3855-3B-14-1-1-1, was selected in 1999. It was designated as the name of Milyang 110. It was prominent and had good result from regional adaptation yield trials (RAT) for three years from 2000 to 2002 and released as the name of “eungangbori” Geungangbori is resistant to barley yellow mosaic virus and moderately resistant to powdery mildow. The average maturing date was same with Olbori on paddy field in regional adaptation yield trials for 2000-2002. Its culm length is 17 cm shorter than that of Olbori and the spike length is 4.4cm, it’ longer than olbori. The 1,000 grain weight of Geungangbori was 34 g, same as Olbori, but the number of spikes per m2 and test weight ware lower than those of Olbori. The yield potential of Geungangbori was 4.22 MT/ha on paddy in regional adaptation yield trials for 2000-2002. which was 7% higher than that of Olbori. The cooking quality of Geungangbori were similar to Olbori such as water absorption rate and expansion rate. But the crude protein content is lower than Olbori. This variety is suitable for double cropping system with rice in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.

        A new mungbean cultivar Daseon (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) was derived from the cross between KM9003-2B-783 and Keumseong at the Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research & Extension Services (JARES) in 2006. Daseon has erect growth habit, heart leaflet, greenish purple hypocotyl, black and straight pod when matured, and dull green seed surface. A thousand seed weight was 52 g, sprout yield ratio was 630%, and the anthocyanin (delphinidin 3-glucoside) of fresh sprouts contained 1.7 ug/g. The average plant height was 2 cm shorter than the check cultivar (Owool). It is field resistance to mungbean mottle virus, cercospora leaf spot, and powdery mildew. The average yield was 1.76 ton/ha, which was 21% more than check cultivar.

        Biomass crops have potential as a source of renewable CO2-neutral energy to ease concerns about fossil fuel consumption. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in high biomass crops such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.). Switchgrass is a perennial C4 grass that requires low cost for biomass production. In the previous study, we evaluated forty-six switchgrass germplasms for biomass yield and classified the germplasms into the high-, medium-, and low-yielding groups. In this experiment, we analyze physiological characteristics affecting biomass productivity and composition of organic compounds for the two selected lines from each biomass yield group. Among the characteristics related to carbon assimilation, photosynthetic rate, real CO2 absorption rate(Delta CO2(CO2 reference - CO2 analysis(corrected for dilution))), P.A.R incident on leaf surface, and chlorophyll content were positively related to biomass yield of the selected lines. Positive correlation was found between biomass yield and ash content but no relations were found between biomass yield and content of organic compounds such as lignin, glucose, crude protein, cellulose, holocellulose, hemicellulose, ADF, and NDF.         KNU corn breeding team in collaboration with International Corn Foundation (ICF) is dedicated to develop super corn hybrids for developing countries like Nepal and Cambodia. The team works to develop high bio-energy maize hybrids for Korea. Crossing of temperate with tropical germplasm shows new heterotic patterns. Four tropical inbred lines from IITA, Nigeria, ten sub-tropical lines from Nepal and two temperate lines (P45 and 69B) from Korea were crossed to produce single-cross hybrids. Besides, four single-cross hybrids from Nepalwere crossed with P45 and 69B to produce three-way crosses. Gray leaf spot (Cercospora zea-maydis) being the most important problem of corn in mid-hills of Nepal, GLS resistant materials from IITA were crossed with Nepal materials in Cambodia to produce GLS tolerant hybrids. Single-cross hybrids were evaluated at ICF Agriculture Center in Cambodia and KNU farm, Gunwi in Korea in 2008. The three-way crosses were planted at Gunwi farm and the GLS resistant materials were planted at Khumaltar station of Nepal Agricultural Research Council, Kathmandu. Crosses of Tzi-25 with RML-4 and RL-111 and RL-105xNML-2 were found outstanding in Cambodia. Four tropical x subtropical hybrids (Tzi-18xRML-4, Tzi-18xRL-14, Tzi-25xRL-14 and RL-47xTzi-25), four temperate x subtropical hybrids (P45xRL-111, P45xRML-8, RML-5x69B and 69BxRL-105). P45xGaurab was the most suitable for both grain and biomass production.

        ‘nnuri’is a japonica rice cultivar developed from the cross between ‘ilyang 165’and HR14732-B-67-2-3 at Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA, in 2005. This cultivar has a short grain shape and about 121 days growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in Korean climate condition. In reaction to biotic and abiotic stresses, it shows resistance to blast, bacterial blight pathogen from K1 to K3 and stripe virus, but susceptible to other major diseases and insect pests. The milled kernel of ‘nnuri’is translucent with non-glutinous endosperm. It has about 18.6% of amylose content and better palatability of cooked rice compared with ‘hucheongbyeo’cultivated in Kyunggi province. The milled rice yield of ‘nnuri’is about 5.94 MT/ha under the standard fertilizer level of the ordinary transplanting cultivation. ‘nnuri’would be adaptable to southern plain of Cheonan, middle-northern plain, and southern mid-mountainous of Korea.

        “Dami”is a new japonica rice variety developed and registered by the rice breeding team of Honam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, RDA in 2006. This variety was derived from a cross between Iksan438 with lodging tolerance and high yield potential, and Iksan426 This variety has about 122 days of growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in Honam and Youngnam plain of Korea. It is about 83 cm in culm length and tolerance to lodging. In reaction to biotic stresses, it shows moderately resistance to blast, and resistance to bacterial blight pathogen races from K1 to K3, but susceptible to other major diseases and insect pests. The milled rice of “ami”has high Quality, midium short grain. The milled rice yield of this variety is about 5.92 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. “ami”would be adaptable to Middle plain, Honam plain and Youngnam plain area of Korea.

        A new peanut variety “eonan”(Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2007. It was developed from the cross between the erect short stem cultivar “P9128” and the high-yielding cultivar “aekwang” “eanan”which is Virginia plant type has 18 branch number per plant with early maturing and long-ellipse shaped large kernel. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and 100 seed weight was 87 g in the regional yield trials (RYT). Especially this variety has resistance to lodging owing to short stem. The free sugar and tannin content of fresh peanut are 3.7% and 0.48%, respectively, similar to check variety. In the regional yield trials “eonan”was outyielded than check variety by 14% with 8.59 MT/ha for fresh pod and by 7% with 3.75 MT/ha for grain.

        A new peanut variety “ungsan”(Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2007. It was derived from a cross between a short stem cultivar “atonoka”and a high-yielding local cultivar “echeon” “ungsan”is the Virginia plant type. It has 18 branches per plant and 40 cm of main stem height. Each pod with long-ellipse shaped large kernel has two grains with light-brown testa and 100 seed weight was 95g in the regional yield trials (RYT). “ungsan”showed more resistant to web blotch compared with check variety. In the regional yield trials “ungsan”was outyielded in grain yield to the check variety by 16% with 4.45 MT/ha for grain.

        A new peanut variety “harmpyeong”(Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2007. It was developed from the cross between the high-yielding cultivar “hindaekwang”and the very short stem cultivar “CGV94216” This Virginia plant typed “harmpyeong”has 33 cm stem height and 18 branch number Each pod with ellipse-shaped large kernel has two grains with brown testa and 100 seed weight was 88 g in the regional yield trials (RYT). This variety also showed more resistant to web blotch compared with check one. Especially it has resistance to lodging until harvesting owing to short stem. In the regional yield trials “harmpyeong”was outyielded than check variety by 13% with 4.35 MT/ha for grain.

        “고강”은 고품질・내병・다수성 지황 개발을 목표로 지황1호 실생 집단에서 우량 개체를 선발, 증식을 거친 후 2001~’02년 생산력 검정시험을 실시하였다. 그 결과 고품질이면서 병해에 강하고수량성이높아수원7호로계통명을부여한후, 2003~’05년까지 3년간 지역적응시험을 실시한 결과 우수성이 인정되어 2005년 12월 직무육성 품종 심의회를 거쳐 “고강”으로 명명하였는바 그 주요특성을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 고강의 초형은 지면에서 약간 솟아오르는 형태를 나타내며, 생육중기 완전 전개된 잎중 가장 어린잎들의 색깔은 안토시아닌 색소를 거의 띠지 않아 대비품종과 구별된다. 2. 고강은 지황1호에 비하여 잎이 크고 많으며, 뿌리가 굵고 길다. 3. 고강은 병에 대한 저항성도 비교적 강하여 생산의 안정성이 높은 품종이다. 4. 고강은 2003~’05년까지 3년간 실시한 지역적응시험결과 수원 등 3지역에서 모두 증수되는 것으로 나타났고, 3지역의 10a당 평균 수량은 1,186kg로 지황1호 대비 13% 증수하였다. 5. 고강은 지황의 주요성분인 catalpol과 엑스함량이 지황1호에 비하여 많은 고품질 품종이다.

        간식용 대립 땅콩의 선호도가 높음에 따라 대립 양질 다수성 신품종 육성을 위하여 단경 다수성인 ‘CUP brittle’과 조숙인 ‘대광’를 인공교배하여 육성한 조평의 주요 특성을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 조평은 버지니아 초형으로 개화기가 빠르고 지상부 생장습성은 직립 단경 다분지성이다. 조평은 대광땅콩에 비해 성숙협수, 성숙협비율등 양호한 등숙특성을 보이며 100립중이 87g인 대립품종이다. 도복은 매우 강한 특성을 나타내며 갈반병, 그물무늬병, 흑반병에 비교적 강하고 낙엽율도 낮아 생육 후기까지 녹엽 유지에 유리하였다. 조평은 단백질이 30.9%, 기름함량이 43.1%이고 양질지방산중 올레산과 리놀산의 비율이 2.1로 산화안정성이 양호한 특성을 가진다. 조평은 3년간 지역적응시험 결과 대광땅콩에 비하여 전국평균 8.37ton/ha로서 11% 증수되었다. 조평은 개화가 빠르고 병해에도 강한 편이나 충분한 성숙을 위하여 강원도와 산간 고냉지를 제외한 지역에서 적응성이 높은 품종이다.
