        Final instars of cicada typically emerge from the ground and metamorphose into adults. Exuviae are typically left on tree branches or leaves where metamorphosis takes place. We investigated morphological characteristics of final instar exuviae for the most prevalent species of cicada that occur in urban areas of central Korea: Cryptotympana dubia, Meimuna opalifera, Oncotympana fuscata, and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata. The characters analyzed were body length, body width, distance between compound eyes, proboscis length, antennal segmentation, femoral structure, and body coloration. The results of Principal Component Analysis for body-size related characters, body length, body width, distance between compound eyes, and proboscis length, revealed that only the first component (PCA1) was significant. The distribution of PCA1 showed that there were three non-overlapping groups: C. dubia, a complex of O. fuscata and G. nigrofuscata, and M. opalifera. Although O. fuscata and G. nigrofuscata were not distinguishable based on size-related characters, these two species differed in femoral structure. That is, the angle between the femur and femoral claw were generally 120° in G. nigrofuscata, whereas it was usually 90° in the other three species. Exuviae of M. opalifera were pale brown and non-polishing, whereas exuviae of three other species were all brown and highly polishing. Therefor, the exuviae of four cicada species can be easily distinguishable based on body size, femoral structure, and body coloration.

        Male cicadas produce species-specific calling songs to attract conspecific receptive females, and they typically occupy tree trunks or branches during calling. We studied calling site preference in the natural environment for four species of cicada: Cryptotympana dubia, Meimuna opalifera, Oncotympana fuscata, and Meimuna mongolica. Males of M. opalifera tended to sing singly in trees, whereas other species were often observed singing together in one tree. In some cases, two or three individuals of different species sang together in one tree; the only possible pairwise combination not observed was M. mongolica with O. fuscata. Calling sites of the four species differed significantly in distance to the ground and distance to trunk, and both tree height and tree crown were significant factors for calling site preference in multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Distance from calling site to the ground was highest in C. dubia, followed by M. opalifera, M. mongolica, and O. fuscata. The distance from calling site to the trunk was greatest in M. opalifera and differed significantly from those of other species, which tended to sing close to tree trunks. Males of M. opalifera were mobile when they produced calling songs, whereas males of other species were stationary. That is, males of M. opalifera sang only for short periods of time and moved around adjacent trees. Segregation of calling sites suggests that these four cicada species occupy different niches, thereby avoiding competition for calling sites as much as possible.

        본 연구의 목적은 중부지방소나무와 굴참나무의 부위별 바이오매스 상대생장식 개발에 있다. 부위별 상 대생장식의 개발을 위하여 축적 및 임분의 구조를 고려하여 중부지방소나무에서 30개소 (70그루), 굴참나무에서 15개소 (32그루)를 선정하고 시료를 수집하였다. 바이오매스의 추정에 이용된 인자는 흉고직경, 흉고직경과 수고를 이용하는 두 가지이며, 지수식, 대수식, 2차방정식의 형태로 구분하였다. 최적의 상대 생장식을 도출하기 위하여 이용된 통계량은 적합도지수 (FI), 잔차의 평균 (Bias), 잔차의 표준오차 (SEE) 이다. 이를 통하여 추정된 수종별 바이오매스 상대생장식은 중부지방소나무에서 W=aDb, W=aDbHc 식이 적합하며 적합도는 0.937, 0.943이다. 반면, 굴참나무는 W=a+bD+cD2, W=aDbHc 식이 적합 하며 적합도는 0.865, 0.874이다. 또한, 중부지방소나무와 굴참나무의 부위별 바이오매스 상대생장식은 중부지방소나무 W=aDb이고, 굴참나무 W=a+bD+cD2으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과로 제시된 중부 지방소나무, 굴참나무의 바이오매스 상대생장식은 일부지역에 국한되어 개발되었던 상대생장식에 대한 단점을 보완할 수 있을 것이며 이들 수종에 대한 탄소량의 계정에 활용이 가능할 것이다.

        본 연구는 최근 2005년 1월부터 2010년 5월까지 발생한 한반도 중서부지역(36-37.8˚N, 126-128˚E)의 내륙 지진중 규모 2.2 이상의 17개 지진에 대한 단층운동의 해를 구하여 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 각 지진의 진앙을 재결정하고, 이를 기상청의 진앙자료와 비교한 결과 대부분 0.03˚ 이내로 대체적으로 유사한 값을 보인다. 진원기구해는 P파 초동극성을 이용하는 방법과 SH파의 극성 및 SH/P 진폭비를 추가하는 방법으로 구하였다. 대부분 주향이동 운동 혹은 주향이동성분이 포함된 사교단층 운동의 특징을 보이며, 주응력장의 P축은 동북동-서남서 혹은 동서 방향이 우세하게 나타난다. 진원기구해는 주로 북북동-남남서와 서북서-동남동 방향의 단층면 혹은 단층보조면을 보이는데, 이는 지표 주구조선의 전반적인 방향과 잘 일치한다. 따라서 진앙이 지표 선구조선과 잘 일치하지 않는다고 하더라도 소규모적으로 지표에 나타나지 않는 이 방향의 지각의 약대를 따라 활성화 했을 가능성이 크다. 또한 경기육괴와 옥천대의 지체구조구에 따른 응력장이나 단층면해의 차이는 나타나지 않으며, 전반적인 한반도의 응력장 분포와도 일치한다.

        The central granular cell odontogenic tumor is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm of uncertain hisotogenesis characterized by varying amounts of eosinophilic granular cells and apparently inactive odontogenic epithelium with variable presence of calcified tissue. We present a case of central granular cell odontogenic tumor involving the maxilla of 35-year-old man with immunohistochemical characterization of granular cells. In microscopic view, the granular cells densely packed in sheets and lobules with abundant eosinophilic, granular cytoplasm and eccentric round-to-ovoid nuclei revealed immunoreactivity for vimentin, α1-antitrysin and CD68, and NSE but not for cytokeratin and S-100 protein while the interspersed odontogenic epithelial cells were positive for cytokeratin only. Granular cells also revealed strong PAS staining. Numerous concentric structured round to ovoid calcified aggregates were also noted. The lesion was treated with excision without recurrence for 8 years. Our immuohistochemical staining findings also suggest that the granular cells of central granular cell odontogenic tumor are mesenchymal in origin with possible histiocytic differentiation

        Central granular cell odontogenic tumor (CGCOT) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm, with approximately 30 cases having been reported. The pathogenesis of CGCOT as well as the designation of this lesion is controversial because of unknown histogenesis of the granular cell. We present an additional case of CGCOT involving the mandible of a 50-year-old Korean man who complained of asymptomatic swelling of the right buccal gingiva. Current lesion is microscopically characterized by densely packed polyhedral granular cells surrounding interspersed islands or strands of odontogenic epithelium. Immunohistochemically, granular cells were positive for Vimentin and CD68, and negative for cytokeratin and S-100. These features support a mesenchymal origin for the granular cells as other results previously reported.

        본 연구는 중부지방에서 동절기간에 적용 가능한 상록지피식물의 이용을 확대하기 위하여 서로 다른 광조건에서의 생장변화를 조사하였다. Nandina domestica는 동절기 동안 광조건에 관계없이 음지에서 높은 엽록소값을 나타냈다. 이후 4월에는 서울의 반포지역에서 엽록소 값이 광조건에 따른 차이는 나타나 지 않았으나 북풍에 노출되어 있는 과천지역에서는 양지에서 현저히 감소하였으며 잎이 모두 낙엽 되었 다. Ophiopogon japonicus는 지역에 관계없이 2월에 양지보다 음지에서 엽록소값이 두 배 이상의 높은 값을 나타냈으며 L과 b값도 조사기간 동안 음지조건에서 높게 나타났다. 4월에는 반포지역에서 광조건에 따른 차이가 없었으나 과천지역에서는 양지에서 동절기 동안 엽색이 탈색되었다. Pachysandra terminalis는 조사지역과 기간에 관계없이 음지조건에서 엽록소값과 L, b값이 높게 나타났다. 따라서 중 부지방에서 상록지피식물을 이용하기 위해서는 음지조건의 조성이 필요할 것으로 여겨진다.

        Influenza virus infection is a zoonosis that results in high mortality in animals and humans. Several recent avian influenza outbreaks have posed a significant public health threat to humans because there have been many cases of direct interspecies transmission from birds to humans. Influenza virus infection causes acute respiratory failure, which is the main cause of death, while chronic influenza virus infection in the central nervous system results in neural dysfunction. Of particular interest, according to one report, a group of patients who recovered from influenza virus infection during pandemics showed neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, and Parkinsonism. Thus, study of the etiology of neuropsychiatric disorders caused by influenza virus infection is needed. In order to conduct necessary experiments, it is essential to reproduce neurological phenomena that are manifested by human patients who have recovered from influenza virus infection using laboratory animals. In this review, we will discuss some of the facts that should be considered when establishing an animal model for study of central nervous system responses to influenza virus infection using mice.

        이 글은 충주 견학리 토성의 발굴조사 성과를 중심으로 중부지역의 판축 토성에 대해서 살펴본 것이다. 견학리 토성은 낮은 구릉지역의 선단부에 축조된 방형에 가까운 형태이다. 이 토성은 비교적 작은 규모로 판축 공법이 적용되었다. 유적의 편년은 두 차례의 발굴조사를 통해 수습된 대부분의 토기편이 9세기를 전후한 시기의 특징적 양상을 보여주고 있어, 이른바 호족이 발생하던 시기에 경영되다가 고려시대 이후로는 폐기된 토성으로 추정하였다. 이 토성에서는 대체로 30cm를 전후한 척도가 적용되었다고 여겨진다. 그 밖에 9~10세기 경에 축성되었다고 판단되는 중부지역의 판축 토성을 살펴보았다. 이 시기의 판축 토성은 내외에 석축 기단과 4m 내외의 영정주 간격을 가진 특징으로 설명할 수 있는데 크게 2가지의 기능을 가진 것으로 판단하였다. 먼저 주요 교통로상에 조망이 우수한 곳을 택해 방형 또는 방형에 가까운 형태를 취한 경우이다. 이러한 구분에는 견학리 토성을 비롯하여 목천토성, 수촌리 토성이 해당한다. 대체로 주변의 높은 산지에서 연결된 구릉이 평지와 맞닿는 말단부에 방형의 형태로 축조되어 주변의 이동을 관측하기에 매우 용이한 특징을 보인다. 이들 성곽은 驛站과 관련된 시설로 보이는데, 특히 주위에 역원이 존재하고 있어 고려․조선시대에 역원이 자리하기 이전 역참으로 활용되었던 것이 아닐까 추정해 볼 수 있다. 반면 사산성과 신금성의 경우에는 초기 읍성의 모습으로 복원해 볼 수 있었다. 이미 신금성의 보고자는 治所로서의 가능성을 제시하고 있으며, 역사적 배경을 통해 통일신라 말기 혹은 고려 초의 縣城으로 비정해 볼 수 있지 않을까 한다. 점차 포곡식으로 전환하는 판축 토성은 지방통치의 거점으로 기능하였을 것으로 권위의 상징으로 규모를 갖춘 문지를 조성하고, 방어적인 요소가 고려되면서 점차 대형화한 것으로 대별해 볼 수 있다.

        Facial numbness restricted to the distribution of the mental nerve(mental neuropathy) is called "numb chin syndrome". The clinical importance of this syndrome is associated with first recognition of involvement of malignant diseases. The malignant neoplasm with numb chin syndrome show rapid progression and high mortality. We present a 43-year-old female who had been treated by radiotherapy for precursor T-cell leukemia/lymphoma involving the central nervous system( CNS) previously and later developed mental nerve invasion without central nervous system recurrence. MRI images revealed the CNS tumor mass remitted, and there was no identified peripheral nervous system(PNS) involvement including the mental nerve invasion, nevertheless the patient complained of consistent numbness and pain on right mandibular area. This is the first case of precursor T-cell leukemia/lymphoma accompanying mental nerve invasion without recurrence for central nervous system. Proper interpretation for mental neuropathy may lead to the prompt diagnosis and therapeutic intervention.

        We investigated the role of the central MAPK pathways in extra-territorial (referred) pain resulting from inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Experiments were carried out on male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 220-280 g. Under anesthesia, these animals were injected with 50 μL of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the TMJ using a Hamilton syringe. In the control group, saline was injected into the TMJ. To identify the extent of inflammation of the TMJ, Evans blue dye (0.1%, 5 mg/kg) was injected intravenously at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days after CFA injection. The concentration of Evans blue dye in the extracted TMJ tissue was found to be significantly higher in the CFA-treated animals than in the saline-treated group. Air-puff thresholds in the vibrissa pad area were evaluated 3 days before and at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 days after CFA injection into the TMJ. Referred mechanical allodynia was established at 3 days, remained until 12 days, and recovered to preoperative levels at 18 days after CFA injection. This referred mechanical allodynia was observed in contralateral side area. To investigate the role of central MAPK pathways, MAPK inhibitors (10 μg) were administrated intracisternally 9 days after CFA injection. SB203580, a p38 MAPK inhibitor, significantly attenuated referred mechanical allodynia, as compared with the vehicle group. PD98059, a MEK inhibitor, also reduced CFA-induced referred mechanical allodynia. These results suggest that TMJ inflammation produces extra-territorial mechanical allodynia, and that this is mediated by central MAPK pathways.

        This study was performed to assess the level of ozone risk for wheat and potato in the central region of the Korean Peninsula by using ozone indices, the ozone-concentration based index (AOT40). The AOT40 indices were calculated for wheat and potato, respectively, at 25 sites in the central region of the Korean Peninsula during a period of three months from April 1 to June 30, 2006. The results for both indices, AOT40, showed that agricultural crops could be seriously damaged by ozone in the central region of the Korean Peninsula. In the result of AOT40, ozone may affect about 60% of the sites for wheat and 20% of the 25 sites for potato.

        The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the dimensions and patterns of the perception of traditional food for Koreans living in Yanbian, Mongolia and Uzbekistan. Items representing the perception of traditional food were combined into a dimension and a pattern based on underlying perception of the Koreans living in the area. Any difference in the perception of the Koreans living in these areas likely reflects their different dimensions and patterns. Thus, it is important to determine if Koreans living in Yanbian, Mongolia and Uzbekistan should be treated as a homogeneous group when defining their perceptional structure of traditional food. Factor and cluster analysis of the data generated in this study revealed two different dimensions and patterns for each group of Koreans living in Yanbian, Mongolia and Uzbekistan. However, the structure of the dimensions and patterns of the perception of traditional food differed, indicating that Koreans within and between the countries are not a homogeneous group. Similarities and differences in perceptional dimensions and patterns among Yanbian, Mongolian and Uzbekistan-Koreans are also discussed. Moreover, future implications for food and nutrition specialists, especially for those who have an interest in Korean traditional food in Asia and those who have an interest in globalization of Korean traditional food are provided.

        A patient complaining of severe pain in the right submandibular area showed a huge sialolith in radiogram. During the operation, the submandibular gland was much indurated, and large amount of pus was discharged out at an incision of the salivary gland. The removed salivary gland contained a huge sialolith in the major excretory duct of submandibular gland, which had an intact grayish-white surface in ovoid shape. In the histological examination its excretory ducts were extensively dilated without extravasation of saliva, and the involved salivary gland was almost destroyed by the granulomatous r eaction. Most of a cinar cells were d isappeared and r eplaced by ductal cells filled with exudative materials. The microsections of sialolith showed typical laminar structures of calcification containing amorphous basophilic material in the center, in which a lot of Gram positive and Gram negative microorganisms were found. In the center of sialolith numerous microorganisms were admixed with mucinous materials which were strongly positive for the antibody of mucin-1, and formed multiple colonies. In the periphery of the bacterial colonies proline rich proteins (PRPs) were condensely localized, and followed by the consistent positive reaction of transglutaminase 4 (TGase-4). These data suggest that the sialolith of this study is formed from the primary nidus of bacterial colony aggregated with salivary mucin-1 and PRPs by the crosslinking reaction of TGase-4.
