Pesticide application pattern for agricultural insect pest was modeled and simulated by temperature change scenarios using DYMEX simulator. For modeling pesticide application pattern, we evaluated bioassay using two-spotted spider mites (TSSM) in vitro. Four separated bioassay was evaluated at four different temperature conditions (20, 25, 30, and 35℃). Selected four commercial pesticides were Acrinathrin-Spiromesifen mixture, Fenpropathrin, Abamectin, and Azocyclotin, respectively. All the pesticide was used its recommended dose, except Abamectin (1/10 of recommended dose). Each mortality of TSSM were counted after 24 and 48 hours. Based on the bioassay results, increasing temperature made decreasing mortality in Acrinathrin-Spiromesifen mixture and Fenpropathrin, whereas increasing mortality in Abamectin and Azocyclotin, respectively. A TSSM model was developed and simulated under four temperature increasing scenarios (present condition, average 1, 2, and 3℃ increased conditions) using DYMEX simulator. The DYMEX results showed that the pesticides application pattern were different among four pesticides under climate change scenario. In conclusion, the pesticide application should be changed for sound management of agricultural insect pest under climate change scenario.

In this study, we have developed the database of safety and health information for pesticide active ingredients used in Korea. There were 1,283 pesticide items among which 296 were found to be out of use in current. A total of 349 pesticide ingredients were being used in Korea. The database consists of 32 types of information including chemical characteristics, acute toxicity, chronic toxicity (carcinogenic and reproductive toxicity), specific symptoms by exposure route and first aid. When pesticide ingredients were assessed in terms of key properties such as color, odor, acute toxicity, carcinogenic and reproductive toxicity, they were white, colorless and odorless, in general. When ingredients were classified by category of acute toxicity, 'Non-hazardous' represented 29%, followed by 'Slightly hazardous' at 16%, 'Moderately hazardous' at 14%, 'Highly hazardous' at 5%, and 'Extremely hazardous' at 2%. 85 out of 349, or 24% of ingredients were found to be possibly carcinogenic to human. This database is expected to provide an easy access for farmers, agriculture supervisors, researchers and consumers, and it can ultimately be used as basic data on farmer's safety and health.

Currently there is a great increase in concern about the safety of food we eat and the potential hazards arising from contamination with synthetic pesticide residues on crops. In general, consumers tend to believe that synthetic pesticides and there residues in crops are dangerous to our health. On the other hand, less attention has been paid to the naturally occurring toxic substances in crops, which may cause or contribute to illness in humans. The Korean peninsula is very hot and humid during the summer season. This environment is good for the growth of various kinds of pests and pathogens as well as crops. Therefore, Korea has been one of the most intensive pesticide consuming countries of the world, an attractive market for multinational pesticide companies. In order to control the diseases, pests and weeds effectively, the use of pesticides in agriculture is inevitable. The pesticides protect the reduction of production from diseases, insect pests and weeds. Furthermore, they provide the stable food and crop supply by improving the quality. Thus, the pesticides are the most economical and safe substance to replace and cover the shortage of rural work force, which gets more and more serious. Pesticide industry in Korea has just a short history of 50 years. Taking the procedures of the import, adoption and imitation of the foreign technologies, five compounds were synthesized newly by our technology and registered as insecticide, fungicide and herbicide. Until now the most of pesticide technicals were imported from foreign countries with high price. The imported technicals are formulating with adjuvant in manufacture factory. From the 1970s a part of technicals which is expired patent are synthesizing by our own technology. Totally of 1,230 items has been notified to be used as pesticide by the government at 2008. The pesticide production in 2008 was 21,168 M/T as an active ingredient. The amount was divided 17.5% for paddy rice, 45.4% for horticultural plants, 26.2% for weed and 10.9% for others. By formulation, emulsifiable concentrate is 46.3%, wettable powder 32.6%, granule 17.5%, dust 0.8% and water soluble powder 0.7%. The total amount of imported pesticide was 443,362 thousand dollars. Among them the technical grade is 77.4%, intermediates for synthesis 4.1%, formulation 18.5%. The technical grade was divided with fungicides 28.7%, insecticides 34.2%, herbicides 26.2% and others 10.9%. The major importing countries are Japan 29%, Germany 15.2%, United State 15%, China 12.6%, Swiss 8.4% and others 29%. The local production ratio of technicals is 10.6% of the required technicals in Korea. On the other hand, Korea is exporting some technical grade and formulations to several nations. The agrochemical market value of Korea in 2008 was 27,586 thousand dollars. The ideal pesticide would be toxic only to the target organism, but unfortunately this cannot often be achieved and most pesticides are to some extent hazardous to other organisms also and, therefore, potentially harmful to those handling them. At present 2008, the maximum residue limit (MRL) for 399 pesticides was established in all crops. And the standard for safe use for 800 items except herbicides was also established in each crop. Every year, Korean government is monitoring the residue level of pesticides to agricultural products for safety of consumers. The classification of pesticides toxicity by the Pesticides Management Law is based primarily on its acute oral and dermal toxicity to test animals. This hazard classification of Korea is following the method of WHO. The hazard class is divided into 4 groups; extremely hazardous, highly hazardous, moderately hazardous and lowly hazardous. Among 1,230 items including 28 items of biopesticide using in Korea, there is no extremely hazardous group, 17 items in highly hazardous group, 175 moderately hazardous and 1,038 lowly hazardous. Apart from classification system by acute toxicity, to minimize the side effects caused by pesticides we have another system prescribing definitely the enforcement degree of crop-residual, soil-residual and water-residual pesticides. Crop-residual pesticide is legally defined as the agrochemical that its terminal residue level in crop harvests exceeds the national maximum residue limit. The residual pesticide of which its persistence is evaluated to have longer than 180 days of half life in soil and the residual impacts on the second cropping is recognized, donates as the soil-residual pesticide. And both of crop and soil residual pesticides are prohibited to register for use. Water residual pesticide of which the fish toxicity (TLm, 48hrs) to the carp is less than 0.1ppm is also legally regulated and banned for use in paddy field. What kinds of pesticides are required for the future of Korean agriculture? Everybody will reply. "They must have the high activity, be safe and without harmful effects to the animals and environment". But actually the development of ideal pesticides in Korea is very difficult owing to invest of lots of money and time. So we are using the technology of molecular design for toxicity reduction of already existing pesticides, and research for development of biopesticides by the bioengineering technique using plants and microorganism. To use pesticides effectively, we have to research and evaluate of integrated control measures including development of biological, enzyme and hormone manipulation, and mechanical controls resulting in pest management concepts. For the future, it is necessary to produce and use more effective and more selective pesticides. Over the development of synthetic pesticides from 1940s there have been significant changes in the tools available for research and development of pesticides. Research on pesticides has gone from spray and prays to high throughput screening on in vitro targets. Analytical techniques of pesticides now allow easier identification of metabolites and degradation products, whilst parts per trillion can be routinely determined. These changes have been largely driven by advances in computing power over the past decades. Similarly, the modeling for development of new pesticides that can now be carried out would have seemed impossible 50 years ago. Information today is also much more readily accessible than before, the internet is a tool which has come of age and is the repository of a large amount of information. Communications have similarly changed with personal mail allowing instant communication with fellow scientists. In the future, international cooperation will be more needed for the exchange of related and updated information in safety evaluation and development of pesticides.

The reduction rate of pesticide residues on spinach(bifenthrin, metalaxyl, procymidone), chard(bifenthrin, imidacloprid) and mallow(bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid) were tested on each step of washing and boiling(spinach: 1, 3, 5min., chard: 3, 6, 9min., mallow: 10, 20, 30min.). The reduction rates of bifenthrin and procymidone by washing were 58~64% and 82%, and these were not changed significantly after boiling. In case of imidacloprid, the rates showed 43% on chard and 12% on mallow by washing, and these were highly increased to 94% after boiling. And the reduction rate of metalaxyl and chloropyrifos were 69% and 11% by washing, and 96~98% and 77~79% by boiling. Specifically we monitored the pesticide residues on both boiled vegetable and its water because there are used to cook as soup in Korea. The total residual amounts of imidacloprid and chloropyrifos were effectively removed on both boiled mallow and its water (12% → 34~40%, 11% → 76~79%), however, the other tested pesticides were not changed on pesticide residues when calculated with total amounts on boiled vegetable and its water. These explained the other pesticides were just moved vegetable to water by boiling.

Organophosphate pesticides have their inhibitory action on the chorinesterase. It is likely that application of organophosphate pesticides invoke retardation in activity as well as death of arthropods. This study is aimed to find changes in foraging activity of ants due to application of fenitrothion, one of most widely used organophosphate pesticides. Foraging activity (FA) of ants was observed by using bait cards at pesticide sprayed pine stand and unsprayed stand before and after aerial application of fenitrothion in 2003 and 2004. FA of Paratrechina flavipes which was too abundant to be statistically compared, significantly decreased from 2 hours to 10 days after application of the pesticide but recovered at 16 day in 2003 and partially recovered at 18 day and completely at 31 day in 2004. FA of other ant species also significantly decreased during the retardation period of FA of P. flavipes. Ratio of ants feeding on baits significantly decreased during the retardation period of FA. However, decrease of interspecific inhibition on feeding action, which was expected for negligence on other ants caused by the chorinesterase inhibition was not observed.

Four stream- activated carbons were prepared by carbonizing apricot stones at 600℃ followed by gasification with steam at 950℃ to burn-off's=17, 32, 49 and 65%. The textural parameters of these activated carbons were determined from nitrogen adsorption results at 77 K. The total pore volume and the mean pore radius increased with the increase of % burn-off whereas the surface area increased with the increase of burn- off from 17 to 32 and further to 49%. Further increase of burn-off to 65% was associated with a considerable decrease in surface area as a result of pronounced pore widening due to pore erosion. The surface pH values of the carbons investigated range between 7.1 and 8.2. The adsorption of oxamyl onto the activated carbon followed pseudo-second order kinetics and the equilibrium adsorption isotherms fitted Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorption of oxamyl proved to be of the physical type and took place in non-micropores. The amount of oxamyl adsorbed expressed as qm depends to a large extent to the surface area located in non-micropores S∝ n, where a straight line relationship passing through the origin was obtained.

Activated carbons were prepared by impregnation of crushed clean date pits in concentrated solutions of phosphoric acid or zinc chloride followed by carbonization in absence of air at 600℃. Steam-activated carbon was prepared by gasifying 600℃-carbonization product at 950℃ to a burn-off = 50%. KOH- activated carbon was prepared by impregnating date pitscarbonization product obtained at 450℃ in concentrated KOH solution followed by carbonization at 840℃. Textural properties of these carbons were determined from nitrogen adsorption at -196℃ and the chemistry of the carbon surface was investigated by determination and of the surface carbon-oxygen (C-O) groups using bases of variable strength and dilute HCl. The adsorption of endosulphan at 27℃ on all the carbons prepared was undertaken. Adsorption of this pesticide at 32 and 37℃ was also undertaken for steam-activated and KOH-activated carbons. Phosphoric acid-activated carbons and steamactivated carbons are mainly microporous and have high surface concentration of C-O groups of acidic nature. Steamactivated and KOH-activated carbons exhibited surface areas 〉 1000 m2/g and contain micro and non-micrpores. The adsorption of endosulphan was related to the surface area of non-micropores and was retarded by the high concentration of surface C-O groups. The thermodynamic properties indicated the feasibility of the adsorption process and the possible regeneration of the carbon for further use.
