A cold roll-bonding (CRB) process is applied to fabricate an AA1050/AA5052 layered sheet. In the process, commercial AA1050 and AA5052 sheets of 1 mm thickness, 40 mm width and 300 mm length are stacked onto each other, and then reduced to a thickness of 0.5 mm through a 2-pass cold rolling process without lubricant. The roll-bonded AA1050/AA5052 layered sheet is then annealed for 1 h at various temperatures from 200 to 400 °C. The specimens annealed at temperatures below 250 °C showed a typical deformation structure in which the grains were elongated along the rolling direction. However, the specimens annealed at temperatures higher than 300 °C exhibited recrystallization structures in both the AA1050 and AA5052 regions. All the roll-bonded and subsequently annealed specimens showed an inhomogeneous distribution of hardness in the thickness direction, in which the hardness in the AA5052 regions was higher than that in the AA1050 regions. As the annealing temperature increased, the tensile and yield strengths decreased and the elongation increased gradually. The mechanical properties were compared to those of commercial AA1050 and AA5052 materials and CRBed AA5052-2L materials from a previous study.

Reinforced concrete (RC) moment frames are widely used to resist lateral loads associated with wind and earthquakes. However, most older RC moment frames performed poorly against past earthquakes. In moment frames, beam-column connections play a crucial role in system performance. Among the connections, corner connections are more vulnerable because they are restrained by only two beams and are affected most strongly by bidirectional loading. High-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCC) were used in previous studies to improve the seismic performance of older beam-column connections. This study aims to evaluate the level of improvement of seismic behavior of older beam-column connections under bidirectional loading after retrofitted with HPFRCC by comparing the seismic behavior of the HPFRCC connections to beam-column connections used in intermediate (IMF) and special moment frames (SMF). Test results revealed that the seismic behavior of the HPFRCC connections was almost close to that of SMF connections.

This study proposes an economically affordable method for retrofitting non-seismic detailed roof reinforced concrete beam-column joints (BCJs). The proposed method presents an innovative arrangement of steel plates designed to delay the propagation of joint shear cracks by externally applying compressive stress to the area surrounding the BCJs. Two full-scale sub-assemblage specimens for each exterior and interior roof BCJ, i.e., control and retrofitted specimens, were subjected to reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the proposed method. The retrofitted specimens displayed a preferable ductile behavior to the corresponding control specimen, with an enhancement in lateral strength by at least 100%. Furthermore, retrofitted specimens dissipated up to 13 times more energy than the control specimen by initiating a plastic hinge on beams or columns. These results indicated the effectiveness of the proposed method in preventing joint shear failure and improving the seismic behavior of roof BCJs.

Steel moment frame connections are vital in moment frames designed to resist forces transferred from adjoining beams and columns. The welded unreinforced flange-welded web (WUF-W) connection is one of the pre-qualified connections used for steel special moment frames (SMFs). This study developed drift-based fragility functions for WUF-W connections based on test data of 35 WUF-W connection specimens from ten previous experimental studies. Four different damage states were defined to calculate the fragility: onset of yielding, local buckling, strength loss, and fracture. Fragility functions were derived assuming that lognormal distribution was validated using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. It was confirmed that fragility functions for WUF-W connections were accurately proposed within a specified confidence interval. The fragility functions proposed in this study exhibit smaller standard deviations compared to FEMA P58, thereby reducing the likelihood of overestimating or underestimating damage at specific drift ratios. Furthermore, these functions remain within the confidence intervals across all damage states, contributing to improved accuracy in damage analysis and loss estimation in performance-based earthquake engineering.

Friction welding, which uses heat and plastic flow to join metals, is expanding across industries due to its ability to weld heterogeneous alloys and simple process. However, process research is essential for materials with complex geometries, and limited research has been conducted on friction welding between cast and sintered metals. This study analyzed the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of the joint by controlling the rotational speed and friction pressure, which affect the removal of the heat-affected zone in friction welding of casted SCM440 and sintered F-05-140. Hardness mapping and microstructure observations with material transition were performed to investigate the correlation between phase behavior and welding conditions. These results are anticipated to reduce costs and improve the mechanical properties of key mobility components.

In this study, the SBC system, a new mechanical joint method, was developed to improve the constructability of precast concrete (PC) beam-column connections. The reliability of the finite element analysis model was verified through the comparison of experimental results and FEM analysis results. Recently, the intermediate moment frame, a seismic force resistance system, has served as a ramen structure that resists seismic force through beams and columns and has few load-bearing walls, so it is increasingly being applied to PC warehouses and PC factories with high loads and long spans. However, looking at the existing PC beam-column anchorage details, the wire, strand, and lower main bar are overlapped with the anchorage rebar at the end, so they do not satisfy the joint and anchorage requirements for reinforcing bars (KDS 41 17 00 9.3). Therefore, a mechanical joint method (SBC) was developed to meet the relevant standards and improve constructability. Tensile and bending experiments were conducted to examine structural performance, and a finite element analysis model was created. The load-displacement curve and failure pattern confirmed that both the experimental and analysis results were similar, and it was verified that a reliable finite element analysis model was built. In addition, bending tests showed that the larger the thickness of the bolt joint surface of the SBC, the better its structural performance. It was also determined that the system could improve energy dissipation ability and ductility through buckling and yielding occurring in the SBC.

The overseas small ship market is witnessing a trend towards research aimed at substituting Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP), which poses environmental concerns, with High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) in the shipbuilding process. Given the low melting point and high coefficient of thermal expansion of HDPE, research on joint areas is essential. This study focuses on preliminary investigations into ensuring the integrity of joints in shipbuilding processes using HDPE materials. Utilizing the Hot Gas Extrusion Welding method, which is conducive to joining large structures such as ships, HDPE joints were conducted. The material properties were evaluated based on the ASTM D638-14 international standards. This research aims to provide fundamental knowledge on the joining process of HDPE through Hot Gas Extrusion Welding and offers guidance on ensuring the integrity of joints in shipbuilding.

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid-state joining process and a rapidly growing dissimilar material welding technology for joining metallic alloys in the automotive industry. Welding tool shape and process conditions must be appropriately controlled to obtain high bonding characteristics. In this study, FSSW is performed on dissimilar materials AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet and SPRC440 steel sheet, and the influence of the shape of joining tool and tool insertion depth during joining is investigated. A new intermetallic compound is produced at the aluminum and steel sheets joint. When the insertion depth of the tool is insufficient, the intermetallic compound between the two sheets did not form uniformly. As the insertion depth increased, the intermetallic compound layer become uniform and continuous. The joint specimen shows higher values of tensile shear load as the diameter and insertion depth of the tool increase. This shows that the uniform formation of the intermetallic compound strengthens the bonding force between the joining specimens and increases the tensile shear load.

AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 layered sheet was fabricated by cold roll-bonding process and subsequently T4 and T6 aging-treated. Two commercial AA1050 sheets of 1 mm thickness and one AA6061 sheet of 2 mm thickness were stacked up so that an AA6061 sheet was located between two AA1050 sheets. After surface treatments such as degreasing and wire brushing, they were then roll-bonded to a thickness of 2 mm by cold rolling. The roll-bonded Al sheets were then processed by natural aging (T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The as roll-bonded Al sheets showed a typical deformation structure, where the grains are elongated in the rolling direction. However, after the T4 and T6 aging treatments, the Al sheets had a recrystallized structure consisting of coarse grains in both the AA5052 and AA6061 regions with different grain sizes in each. In addition, the sheets showed an inhomogeneous hardness distribution in the thickness direction, with higher hardness in AA6061 than in AA1050 after the T4 and T6 age treatments. The tensile strength of the T6-treated specimen was higher than that of the T4-treated one. However, the strength-ductility balance was much better in the T4-treated specimen than the T6-treated one. The tensile properties of the Al sheets fabricated in the present study were compared with those in a previous study.

Image mosaicking is one of the basic and important technologies in the field of application using images. The key of image mosaicking is to extract seamlines from a joint image. The method proposed in this paper for image mosaicking is as follows. The feature points of the images to be joined are extracted and the joining form between the two images is identified. A reference position for detection the seamlines were selected according to the joint form, and an image pyramid was created for efficient image processing. The outlines of the image including buildings and roads are extracted from the overlapping area with low resolution, and the seamlines are determined by considering the components of the outlines. Based on this, the seamlines in the high-resolution image was re-searched and finally the seamline for image mosaicking was determined. In addition, in order to minimize color distortion of the image with the determined seamline, a method of improving the quality of the mosaic image by fine correction of the mosaic area was applied. It was confirmed that the quality of the seamline extraction results applying the method proposed was reasonable.

For fast-built and safe precast concrete (PC) construction, the dry mechanical splicing method is a critical technique that enables a self-sustaining system (SSS) during construction with no temporary support and minimizes onsite jobs. However, due to limited experimental evidence, traditional wet splicing methods are still dominantly adopted in the domestic precast industry. For PC beam-column connections, the current design code requires achieving emulative connection performances and corresponding structural integrity to be comparable with typical reinforced concrete (RC) systems with monolithic connections. To this end, this study conducted the standard material tests on mechanical splices to check their satisfactory performance as the Type 2 mechanical splice specified in the ACI 318 code. Two PC beam-column connection specimens with dry mechanical splices and an RC control specimen as the special moment frame were subsequently fabricated and tested under lateral reversed cyclic loadings. Test results showed that the seismic performances of all the PC specimens were fully comparable to the RC specimen in terms of strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, drift capacity, and failure mode, and their hysteresis responses showed a mitigated pinching effect compared to the control RC specimen. The seismic performances of the PC and RC specimens were evaluated quantitatively based on the ACI 374 report, and it appeared that all the test specimens fully satisfied the seismic performance criteria as a code-compliant special moment frame system.
