Small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises(SMEs) have traditionally relied on skilled labor to support multi-variety, small-batch production. However, demographic changes such as low birth rates and aging populations have led to severe labor shortages, prompting increased interest in collaborative robots(cobots) as a viable alternative. Despite this necessity, many SMEs continue to face significant challenges in implementing such technologies due to technical, organizational, and environmental(TOE) constraints. While prior research has mainly focused on technology adoption from the perspective of user organizations, this study adopts a differentiated approach by analyzing adoption factors from the perspective of smart factory experts—specifically, evaluators/mentors and solution providers—who play a critical role in Korea’s policy-driven smart manufacturing environment. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP), the study evaluates the relative importance and prioritization of adoption factors across three dimensions: technology, organization, and environment. Survey data collected from 20 smart factory experts indicate that top management support, relative advantage, and safety are key determinants in cobot adoption. Furthermore, the findings reveal that organizational readiness and technical effectiveness have greater influence on implementation decisions than external pressures such as partner pressure. This study provides new insights by incorporating expert perspectives into the adoption framework and offers practical policy and managerial implications to support cobots implementation in the SMEs.
Seafood, a major source of essential protein for human nutrition, has gained increasing significance as consumption rises due to higher income levels, growing health awareness, and environmental concerns. This study investigates the effects of individual lifestyles, food consumption tendencies, and food safety concerns on seafood consumption behavior. Utilizing data from the 2022 Food Consumption Behavior Survey conducted by the Korea Rural Economic Institute, the analysis categorizes consumers by age group to account for the nonlinear relationship between age and seafood consumption. Key variables include seafood purchase frequency, demographic characteristics, food safety concerns, and dietary preferences. The results reveal that seafood consumption patterns vary significantly across age groups, highlighting the importance of age-specific marketing strategies. Moreover, the findings suggest a need to expand and strengthen the promotion of food safety certification systems and to develop more targeted promotional strategies that reflect the diverse characteristics of individual consumers.
Blow-up in jointed concrete pavements refers to a type of distress caused by the excessive accumulation of compressive stress within concrete slabs, primarily resulting from internal expansion and elevated environmental temperatures. This phenomenon frequently leads to slab buckling and is challenging to predict in terms of both timing and location, thereby significantly threatening the long-term structural stability of the pavement. In the present study, the pavement growth and blow-up analysis (PGBA) model was employed to quantitatively predict the timing of blow-up events in jointed concrete pavements. The model estimates the maximum compressive stress within the slab throughout the pavement’s service life using input parameters such as reliability, climatic conditions, pavement structure, material properties, and expansion joint configurations. Subsequently, the model compares the estimated stress to the threshold stress associated with blow-up to determine the likely time of occurrence. A sensitivity analysis was performed on a range of design and environmental factors, including annual maximum temperature, annual maximum precipitation, coefficient of thermal expansion, ASR, pavement thickness, geometric imperfection, and expansion joint spacing and width. The influence of each factor on the predicted blow-up occurrence time was quantitatively evaluated. The analysis demonstrated that climatic conditions, pavement structure, material properties, and expansion joint characteristics, as considered in the PGBA model, collectively govern the timing of blow-up events. These findings offer critical insights for informing the design and maintenance strategies of jointed concrete pavements.

In the evolving global food industry, international certifications have become essential for seafood export companies to ensure product safety, quality, and sustainability, as well as to meet consumer demands and regulatory standards. This study analyzes the decision-making factors influencing the acquisition and maintenance of international certifications among Korean seafood export companies, using decision tree analysis. The research surveyed 134 seafood export companies, focusing on six key factors: corporate characteristics, environmental factors, input factors, organizational structure, company capabilities, and external relationships. The decision tree analysis revealed that among corporate characteristics, the size of sales revenue, number of employees, and proportion of exports were found to play significant roles. For environmental factors, specific demands from overseas buyers, shifting consumer preferences, and compliance with global standards were identified as having a major impact. Regarding input factors, certification costs, validity periods, and investments in processing facilities were revealed to be critical variables. Organizational factors such as managerial support and dedicated personnel, capability factors like inter-departmental collaboration and processing system capacity, and relationship factors including partnerships with certification and export support agencies were also critical in the certification process. This study identified various factors influencing the decision-making process for acquiring and maintaining international certifications among Korean seafood export companies and analyzed the importance of detailed variables for the first time. Additionally, it provides practical and policy-oriented implications to promote the adoption of international certifications as part of efforts to enhance the global competitiveness of Korean seafood. Furthermore, this study contributes to the academic understanding of the decision-making process related to international certifications in seafood export companies.
This study examined the intake status and the factors affecting intake of functional foods using the data from Consumer Behavior Survey for Food by the Korea Rural Economic Institute. Among the total respondents, 80.4% took functional foods, and the number of respondents who took two types of functional foods was the highest. The main reason for taking functional foods was to prevent disease, and the main places of purchase of functional foods were off-line large supermarkets, on-line shopping malls, and pharmacies. Compared to a year ago, the percentage of increase in functional food purchases this year was higher than the percentage of decrease. The most common reasons for not taking functional foods were ‘not feeling the need’ and ‘not trusting the quality’. As a result of conducting a complex samples logistic regression analysis to identify the factors affecting the intake of functional foods, gender, age, marital status, illness state, alcohol drinking, and convenience-seeking type among dietary lifestyles were significant.
In this study, we aim to classify personal mobility (PM)-related traffic crash data into four categories: PM-to-vehicle, PM-to-pedestrian, PM-single, and vehicle-to-PM crashes, and analyze the factors influencing the severity of each crash type. To overcome the limitations of existing studies in explaining the impact of independent variables on ordinal dependent variables, a random forest model was combined with the Shapley additive explanation technique. This approach visualizes the influence of independent variables on a dependent variable, providing clearer insights and enhancing interpretability. The analysis of PM traffic accidents, categorized into at-fault, single-vehicle, and victim accidents, revealed distinct key factors for each type. The main contributors to the severity of crashes caused by PM are traffic violations by teenagers and collisions with elderly pedestrians. Single-vehicle accidents were predominantly caused by overturn incidents, with inadequate driving skills among PM users aged 40 years and older, and significantly increasing severity. Victim accidents primarily occur at intersections, where the behavior of the at-fault driver and age of the PM user are critical factors influencing the severity. We identified various factors influencing the severity of PM crashes by type, highlighting the need for tailored policy measures. Proposed policies include physically separating bicycle–pedestrian shared spaces and strictly regulating illegal PM sidewalk riding, introducing PM licenses for teenagers to ensure compliance with traffic rules, and implementing regular safety education programs for all age groups. Although this study applied a new analytical technique, it relied on limited crash data, thus limiting the results to estimates.
This study investigated the seasonal variations and environmental factors influencing soil respiration in Quercus mongolica forests at three distinct sites in South Korea: Mt. Jeombongsan, Mt. Namsan, and Mt. Jirisan. Monthly soil respiration rates were measured from 2009 to 2010 using a closed chamber method, alongside assessments of soil temperature, moisture, and organic matter. Results revealed significant seasonal and spatial variability, with the highest respiration rates recorded during summer months. Soil temperature was identified as the primary driver of respiration, showing strong positive correlations across all sites (R2=0.64 - 0.88). The temperature sensitivity (Q10) values ranged from 2.7 at Mt. Namsan to 5.7 at Mt. Jeombongsan, underscoring the heightened vulnerability of cooler, high-altitude forests to warming. Soil moisture had a dual role, promoting respiration at moderate levels but inhibiting it under saturated conditions, particularly at Mt. Jirisan. Soil organic matter content exhibited an inverse relationship with respiration rates, indicating that substrate quality, rather than quantity, predominantly governs microbial activity. Plant-soil interactions, including root respiration and litterfall decomposition, further modulated respiration patterns, with site-specific differences reflecting variations in vegetation density and ecosystem structure. These findings highlight the complexity of soil carbon dynamics in temperate forests and the critical influence of environmental factors and plant-soil processes. The study provides essential insights for improving carbon cycling models and informs climate-resilient forest management strategies. Future research should prioritize long-term monitoring and experimental manipulations to better predict soil respiration under changing climatic conditions.
The green supply chain has become a central concern for global businesses, particularly in maritime industries, where sustainable development is pursued as both an economic growth strategy and a means of environmental preservation. This study seeks to identify the key challenges to implementing green supply chain in Vietnam. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is employed to assess the significance of various factors, while Fuzzy Structural Modeling (FSM) is used to explore their interrelationships. Five major factors - economic, technological, organizational, governmental, and social - are identified as critical to the implementation of green supply chain. The study highlights that the organizational factor is the most crucial, with customer pressure, particularly regarding environmental standards from export countries, being the most influential sub-factor. The findings provide important insights for developing government policies, offering support to businesses, and guiding investment decisions in green supply chain.

After World War II, China, Japan, and South Korea faced severe devastation, with their economies, politics, and cultures in disarray. China, after the Second Sino-Japanese War, entered into a civil war, only stabilizing with the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Japan, under U.S. occupation, struggled with the war’s lingering effects, while Korea, liberated from Japan, was divided between Soviet-controlled North and U.S.-occupied South. The Korean War (1950-1953) further complicated the situation. To rebuild, these nations adopted significant reforms, including language policy changes. Influenced by Western civilization, China, Japan, and South Korea simplified their writing systems, replacing traditional Han characters and Latinizing scripts. In China, the PRC aimed to standardize language and reduce illiteracy by simplifying Chinese characters and implementing Hanyu Pinyin. Japan, under U.S. guidance, introduced a "National Language Reform" to simplify kanji and promote phonetic scripts. In South Korea, linguistic purism emerged as part of efforts to eliminate Japanese colonial influences, emphasizing the use of Hangul and reducing reliance on hanja. This paper explores the Chinese character policies of these countries, analyzing the motivations and effects of these reforms during the post-war era.

This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the severity of taxi traffic accidents at intersections in Busan and propose measures to improve traffic safety. This study collected data on taxi traffic accidents that occurred at intersections in the Metropolitan City of Busan during the past 3 years (2020–2022) from Traffic Accident Analysis System(TAAS) and road views, and analyzed factors affecting their severity by employing an ordered probit model. The severity of taxi traffic accidents worsened with violations of (among others) traffic signals and pedestrian protection during January, April, and September. In addition, when a major street was operated with a permissive left turn, the severity of taxi traffic accidents worsened. Measures to improve traffic safety suggested in this study included safety education that focused on particular violations for taxi drivers, mandatory education for transport employees in an experiential format, support of video storage devices for driving records, policy establishment for the promotion and certification of good and bad driving videos, time adjustment of joint safety management inspection, and left-turn signal operation with an unprotected system and P-turn guidance.
This study aimed to statistically analyze and understand the factors contributing to road icing accidents on Korean roads, particularly within sections designated as ice-prone. The objective was to assess the adequacy of the existing criteria for designating these sections and to provide insights for improving safety measures on icy roads. Road icing accident data were collected from Korea’s (traffic accident analysis system (TAAS) database, covering incidents from 2018 to 2022 on both expressways and general roads. The data were compiled to create a comprehensive database that incorporated geographic and weather-related factors influencing road icing accidents. Using geographic information systems (GIS), a spatial analysis was performed on the designated ice-prone and non-designated sections. The inverse distance weighting (IDW) method was applied to interpolate the meteorological data, and the temperature lapse rate was used to adjust for altitude-related variations in temperature, providing estimates for conditions such as the average temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation days at each accident location. The analysis revealed that only 2.9% of designated ice-prone sections reported icing-related accidents, whereas 97.6% of icing accidents occurred in non-designated sections. This discrepancy highlights potential gaps in the current criteria for designating ice-prone areas. Additionally, road characteristics such as traffic volume, lane count, speed limit, and curve radius, along with meteorological factors such as humidity, precipitation frequency, and solar radiation exposure, were observed to be significantly correlated with icing accidents. Regions with high relative humidity and low sunlight exposure exhibited a heightened risk of road icing accidents, suggesting the need for these parameters to designate ice-prone sections. This study underscores the need to refine Korea's criteria for designating ice-prone sections by incorporating a wider range of risk factors, including detailed terrain data, shaded areas, and road geometry factors, such as slopes. Integrating these additional elements into the designation process could enhance the precision and effectiveness of preventive measures and ultimately reduce the risk of icing-related accidents in Korea’s road networks. These findings provide a foundation for future policy and management decisions to enhance road safety during the winter.

This study was performed to analyze dietary influences on the regulation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in postmenopausal women using the 2019-2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A total of 1,724 women were classified into cardiovascular risk groups based on risk factors and differentiated into high LDLC and normal groups according to the target serum LDL-C levels. The risk group distribution was as follows: Very high-risk group (6%), high-risk group (49.4%), moderate-risk group (42.3%), and low-risk group (2.3%). The high LDL-C group demonstrated abdominal obesity and prediabetes, with their carbohydrate energy intake exceeding the Korean dietary guideline recommendations of 65%. Increased fat (OR 2.67, 95% CI; 1.19-6.02) and cholesterol (OR 2.43, 95% CI; 1.02- 5.77) intake correlated with higher LDL-C risk. The high LDL-C group showed elevated saturated fat and reduced polyunsaturated fat consumption (p for trend <0.001). Thus, to regulate the LDL cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women, they maintain an appropriate weight in addition to managing abdominal obesity and continuously monitoring blood sugar levels. Furthermore, it is important to limit the intake of high saturated fat meats and consume sufficient protein from sources such as beans, fish, and eggs, which contain healthy unsaturated fats.
