Crop inputs in excess of the yield potential of the soil type reduce profitability and increase pollution problems from leaching and runoff. Inaccurate fertilizer and pesticide application can also result in profit loss. Current farming practices plan only for the dominate soil in the field. A government-supported program titled “Pilot village project for the environment-friendly agriculture” was proceeded from 1999 to 2001 to tackle the problems with which our agriculture is faced by introducing IPM, INM and others. The objective of this study is to consider the potential input savings of agricultural chemicals and economic feasibility of the project compared with the conventional farming. The results of the analysis indicate the followings: (1) organic or no-pesticide farming size was increased from 9% in 1999 to 20% in 2001; (2) crop yield was a little bit lower than that of the conventional farming, but the sale price, gross income and income of the pilot village were 6%, 10% and 9% higher than that of the conventional farming, respectively ; and (3) fertilizer and pesticide use also showed decreasing trend gradually.

U.S. organic farming has grown rapidly-20 percent or more annually-throughout the 1990s, which kept pace with consumer demand for organically produced food. Thus certified organic acreage is the total to 2.35 million acres in 48 state in 2001, and so the U.S. ranked fourth in land area managed under organic farming systems. And according to several surveys, consumer’s reasons for purchasing organic food are health and nutrition, taste and environmental concerns. California and North Dakota were the top two states in 2001 for certified organic cropland; the former with mostly fruits and vegetables, and the latter with wheat, soybeans, and other crops. And the top two states for certified organic pasture were Colorado and Texas. And then several states such as Iowa and Minnesota have begun subsidizing conversion to organic farming systems as a way to capture the environmental benefits of these systems. The price of organic produce fluctuates rather broadly because of being traded by market economy principle and of demandsupply disequilibrium. Nevertheless, average price premiums for organic produce are higher than the prices for the produce under conventional farming. Future prospects for U.S. organic farming are as follows; Demand for organically grown foods is expected to continue growing at a rapid pace, as more growers convert to organic production and more processors and distributors expand organic selections in their product lines. And new processed products and new types of healthy foods are likely to appear on the market, and some new organic products will be aimed at mainstream markets.

This study attempted to identify relative evaluation to its attributes and improvement of consumer’s demand in the Environment-Friendly Agricultural Products (EFAP). To identify the consumption patterns of EFAP, a series of household surveys were conducted for housewives residing in Seoul and its metropolitan area (Bundang and Ilsan). The sample size of the survey is 366 respectively. This study operated relative evaluation of EFAP by Multi-Demential Scales(MDS) about 10 attributes that this study set up. As the result, the consumers recognized that EFAP is “protection of ecosystem”, “food safety”, “good for growth of children”, “high quality”, and in case of conventional farming products is “inexpensive price”, and “diversity of purchasing items”. This trend has significant implications to the structure of EFAP output and how positioning strategies, and approaches should be properly formulated and implemented.

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementing earthworm meal (EWM) on the performance of spent laying hens after induced molting, and fatty acid composition in egg yolks. A total of 90 laying hens at 73 weeks of age were fed the experimental diets containing 0.0% (Control) and 0.2% of EWM for 4 weeks. Eggs were collected and weighted every day and egg production and feed conversion were recorded every week during the experimental period. However fatty acid composition of egg yolk were measured at last week of experimental period. An amount of feed intake increased by supplemental with EMW except for first week experimental period (P<0.05). When 76 and 77 week of age, egg production and daily egg mass were improved by the supplemented with EWM (P<0.01), but average egg weight was not different when fed a EWM, therefore feed/egg mass was significantly decreased when fed a EWM. The ratio of egg yolk n-6/n-3 fatty acids contents was significantly improved fed a EMW (P<0.05). It is concluded that supplementing 0.2% of earthworm meal in the spent laying hens after induced molting was fast in recover of physical strength, therefore improves laying performance.

This study was carried out to screen and select the effects of antifungal bacterial strains which inhibit the growth of plant pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum (fusarium wilt) occurred in carnation plants in greenhouse. We isolated an effective bacterial strains and investigated into the antifungal activity of the antagonistic microorganism and it’s identification. Twenty bacterial strains which strongly inhibited Fusarium oxysporum were isolated from roots of carnation plants and the soil in greenhouse, and the best antifungal bacteria designated as C121, was finally selected. Antagonistic bacterial strain, C121 was identified to be the genus Bacillus sp. based on the morphological, biochemical and cultural characterizations. The Bacillus sp. C121 showed 58.1% of antifungal activity against the growth of Fusarium oxysporum. By the bacterialization of the cultural broth and the heat bacterialization culture filtrate of it, Bacillus sp. C121 was shown 92.1% and 21.0% of antifungal activity, respectively.

Identification of animals has been used with an ear tag with dummy code and blood typing has been used for paternity and individual identification in live animals. Various genetic markers are different for breeds of pig and hence, it is necessary to identity the discrete genetic marker in korean native pig. A total of 240 pigs were used to find korean native pig population specific markers that expressed in population of korean native pigs. To identify the individual traceability, 20 animals were randomly chosen and tested for a whole process from being live to slaughter stages. The candidate genetic marker used in the study were 18 DNA microsatellites which were identified in pig genome. The number of alleles of those DNA microsatellites ranged form a minimum of 3 to maximum of 6. The heterozygote frequency ranged from 0.44 to 0.69. Effective number of alleles for each DNA microsatellotes were 2 to 4. By choosing 6 candidate genetic markers among all, the traceability of individual identification was estimated as accurate as 99.99%(p>0.0014), nearly.

The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of applying times and dilution rates of cattle slurry on dry matter yields of orc㏊rd grass. Cattle slurry was applied at the rates of average mineral nitrogen fertilizer equivalent to 150 ㎏/㏊/year in 3 cutting frequency. Significantly higher dry matter yields t㏊n t㏊t of no fertilization (3.04 ton DM/㏊) were recorded in the application of diluted cattle slurry(5.38~6.25 ton DM/㏊) (p

In recent years, the consumption of livestock products were markedly decreased by awareness of world-widely occurred diseases including mad cow disease, Foot and mouth disease, Hog cholera, and Poultry Influenza virus. The consumers are also wanting to have highly safe food such as organic animal products because of concerning about residual of antibiotics in animal products. However, disease control and impairment of productivity are the major problem in organic animal production. On these points of view, the present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of 1% or 2% of dietary probiotics fortified with various minerals on improvement of egg production and egg quality in old layer feeding low quality feed mainly composed of food waste, sesame meal, and rice bran. After 4 weeks of experimental feeding, the diameter of spreading of egg white was clearly decreased from 11.2cm of control eggs to 10.5m and 10.1m in 1% and 2% treatment group eggs, respectively. The color of egg yolk was 9.3 in control eggs but remarkably increased in treatment groups showing 10.1~10.2. Egg production was 75.8% in control layers but significantly increased to 79.8% of 1% treatment group and 82.9% of 2% treatment group layers. Egg weights (C : 66.3g, 1% : 73.2g, and 2% : 76.7g) and egg shell thickness (C : 0.33㎜, 1% : 0.35㎜ and 2% : 0.36㎜) were also increased by the addition of 1% or 2% of probiotics when compared to those of control group eggs. All together, it has been suggested that dietary addition of probiotics fortified with various minerals can improve the egg quality and egg production in layer"s productivities by the recycling of organic waste resources such as food waste and agricultural by-products.

In recent years, many researches are actively undertaken for environmental-friendly animal production according to the increased understanding about food safety because of the outbreak of various diseases such as mad cow disease, Foot and mouth disease and Poultry Influenza virus. However, high quality(higher safety)-animal production may not be successful without increasing of disease resistance of animal and the improvement of feeding environment. To increase the disease resistance is able to be accomplished by stimulating the immune function. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of enzyme mixture reinforced with β-glucanase activity which degrade polysaccharide to release β-glucan known as stimulator of immune function on the change of milk production and somatic cell count. After 12weeks of experimental feeding, milk production tended to be increased and somatic cell count was decreased from average 227×10⁴ to 37.1×10⁴. Milk protein and solid-fat content were tended to increase but milk fat showed decreasing tendency by the feeding of enzyme mixture. All together, it has been suggested that the improvement of high quality milk production may be possible through the dietary addition of immune modulating enzyme mixture in lactating dairy cows.
