This paper evaluates potential environmental impacts and external costs on rice production of Korea. The investigation is based on LCA in agricultural area which estimates inputs and outputs of rice production system in quantitative way. The results show that environmental impacts on organic rice(4.49E-08 DALY/kg) is level on 4.5% out of conventional rice(9.97E-07 DALY/kg). The external costs of organic and conventional rice are 4.04won/kg and 89.52won/kg respectively. The balance of both organic and conventional rice which is 85.48won/kg represents monetary value on improvement of environmental effects as producing organic rice.

The objectives of this study were to find out determinant attributes of selecting Environment-Friendly Agricultural Products (EFAP) and to analyze the degree of consumer’s satisfaction by using factor analysis. To identify determinant attributes of EFAP, a series of household surveys were conducted on housewives residing in Seoul. The sample size of the survey is 247 respectively. The main results of this study are summarized as follows. Firstly, the degree of consumer’s satisfaction and loyalty is higher than before. Secondly, the consumers recognized that the most important attributes in selecting EFAP is a ‘taste’. Thirdly, ‘price policy’, ‘diversity of purchasing items’ and ‘package design’ will continuously speed up the development of EFAP in order to improve the consumer"s satisfaction.

The study was conducted to investigate effects of different organic fertilizers on ‘Niitaka’ pear tree performances in a controlled greenhouse. The four ‘Niitaka’ pear seedling trees per treatment were grown in a greenhouse for 6 months. Each pot was filled with control, rice bran (RB), coffee bran compost (CBC), and the mixture (RCC) of RB + CBC + chitin incubated compost (CIC). Each pot was filled with 1:1:1 (v/v/v) of soil : sand : fertilizer, and control, RB, CBC, CIC, and RCC were applied as treatments. Root fresh weights and root activities were increased by all the organic fertilizers, especially by RCC. RCC treated trees had the highest tree height and thickest tree trunk, and all organic fertilized trees showed increased tree growth compared to the control. The more diseased and damaged degrees on the leaf by spider mites increased leaf falling rates on all the treatments. The reduced diseased and healthy leaves were found on RCC treated trees that had better tree performance. Also, all the organic fertilized trees seemed to prevent the occurrence of disease in the leaf. Therefore, the organic fertilizer applications could be a good strategy to obtain better tree performance and maintain healthy seedlings in the nursery market or young organic pear orchard.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of organic liquid fertilizer (OLFs) fertigation on the growth and fruit quality of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. ‘Nokkwang (Seminis Korea)’. Treatments were given with control (chemical feritilzer), OLF Ⅰ(fowl dropping : fish meal : soybean meal, 2:1:1), OLF Ⅱ(fowl dropping : bone meal : soybean meal, 2:1:1), OLF Ⅲ(fowl dropping : bone meal, 1:1), and OLF Ⅳ(fowl dropping : rice bran : soybean meal, 2:1:1). The composition ratio of OLF based on weight to weight. The pH and EC of OLFs according to different material and compositions ranged from 6.5 to 6.8, and from 2.91 to 3.69dS · m-1, respectively. The C/N ratio was the highest as 5.75 in OLF Ⅳ, and there was no difference among the treatments in C/N ratio of the exception of OLF Ⅳ. In OLF Ⅳ total fruit weight was the highest as 1,558g per plant and total fruit number increased as 23.7% compared to control. The content of capsaicin in the ripened pepper increased with OLF Ⅰ and Ⅱ treatments, and decreased with OLF Ⅲ and Ⅳ treatments compared to control of 662mg ․ kg-1, but the soluble solid content was the highest with OLF Ⅳ treatment as 10.0°Brix.

The purpose of this study is to investigate an occurrence rate of rice stripe virus disease under different rice transplanting time and different rice cultivars. After final harvest, the yield of rice infected by rice stripe virus was obtained on Wangchal cultivar compared to uninfected rice. The results obtained as following: 1) Yield of rice infected by rice stripe virus was decreased by 64% with reduction of culm length, pancile length, number of spike, number of spikelet, and grain filling compared to uninfected rice, 2) An occurrence rate of rice stripe virus disease under different rice planting season was high as order of May 30 > June 15 > July 1. In additional, to reduce a rice stripe virus disease on higher disease occurrence region and susceptible cultivars, rice planting season will be accepted on and after June 15, and 3) Eighteen cultivars were resistance cultivars such as Hwayeongbyeo, Onnuri, Ilmibyeo, Nampyongbyeo, Dongjin2ho, Hopumbyeo, Hwangkeumnuri, Malgeumi, Saenuri, Pungmi1ho, Haechanmulgyeo, Hwangkeumnodeul, Chilbobyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Younganbyeo, Junambyeo, Samkwangbyeo, and Nakdongbyeo. Twenty-one cultivars were susceptible cultivars such as Odaebyeo, Unkwangbyeo, Shinungbong1ho, Manabyeo, Hopyongbyeo, Borami, Damibyeo, Hwangchalbyeo, Sulgengbyeo, Nongrim6ho, Sasanishigi, Yunishigari, Chungmubyeo, Dongjin1ho, Huknambyeo, Guromy, Shanghehanghulna, Heukchalbyeo, Heukhwangbyeo, and Aranghwangchalbyeo.

Organic farming is a type of agricultural practices based on naturally occurring processes excluding or strictly limiting the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals. This study was conducted to investigate the influences of agro-based materials, effective microorganisms (EM), liquid silicate (LS), and organic liquid fertilizer (OLF) for water dropwort (Oenanthe stolonifera DC.)cultivation. Soil pH, soil organic matter, and plant available phosphorous decreased with LS application. Exchangeable Ca and Mg decreased with EM application, and electrical conductivity and exchangeable Ca and K decreased with OLF application. Most of essential nutrient contents in water dropwort were reduced with the treatments of LS, EM, and OLF as compared with those in control plot, except nitrogen and phosphorus. However, diseases and insect pests were almost not observed in the water dropwort in the agro-based material application plots, except cluster caterpillar (Spodoptera litura). Productivity of water dropwort tended to be reduced: its higher productivity in the OLF and EM+LS plots and lower in the LS and control plots.

This study was conducted screening of the population densities of fungal pathogens and insect and observed the disease symptoms on the organic sweet corn seed producing field from 2008 to 2009. The dissemination spores, Alternaria sp., Cladosporium sp., Helminthosporium sp., Pyricularia sp., Collectotrichum sp., and Bipolaris sp., were detected and the three fungal spores from the front were observed for whole growth stage. Seed and seedling diseases were shown as the rotted seed and damping-off seedling caused by Penicillium sp. and Rhizoctonia sp.. The larva of Black cutworm cut down the root crown of seedlings. The damaged plants were ranged from 14% to 16%. On the Oriental corn borer, the population densities and the percentage of damaged plants were showed a low difference between two sweet corn varieties. The population densities of Oriental corn borer were scored as from 3.5 to 20.5 in 2008 and from 0.5 to 6 in 2009. Also the percentage of damaged plants were significantly increased until harvesting stage and was recorded from 7.5% to 21% in 2008 and from 1% to 46% in 2009. On the Corn leaf blight, the percentage of diseased plant were scored from 7% to 34% in 2008. The first occurrence of date was after June 18, and the percentage of diseased plant was continuously increased after August 21 and the values of diseased plants was ranged from 56% to 69% in 2009. On common smut, the percentage of diseased plant was recorded from 5% to 15% in 2008, and the first occurrence date were delayed as 17 days (July 17) and were showed less than 8% of diseased plants in 2009. Corn Southern Leaf spot was scored as average 11% at early stage and showed high score as 62% at September 19 in 2008. In 2009, the first occurrence date were advanced about 20 days (after June 8), and continuously increased up to 86% in 2009.
