The purpose of this paper is to suggest policy implications on the R&D planning scope to acquire highly technology quality level and to show the necessity of differentiated strategy by each technology fields in organic agriculture field. To achieve this, we analyzed the determinants of excellent R&D performance using the patent bibliography information analysis based on the count data models. Through empirical analysis, we find out that the determinants are different from each technology field, and show that these determinants should be included in the scope of R&D planning
The purposes of this study are to analyze the effect of consumption of environment- friendly agricultural products (EFAP) on improvement of family health, and to suggest directions for improvement of family health. A survey was conducted for qualitative analysis regarding relationship between EFAP consumption and family health. The method of his study was employed Cross-tabulation and an Ordinal Logistic Regression Model to derive more significant results in analyzing factors of improvement of family health. The result shows that improvement of health has a significant positive relationship with consumption of EFAP. In addition, those consumers with high reliability and quality contentment are more likely to experience improvement of health. As consumers constantly eat EFAP, they are more likely to experience improvement of health. In order to provide consumer reliability of EFAP, more strict certification management system with sound monitoring and an appropriate penalty for violation should be established
Agricultural income is calculated with producer price, output and management cost. This study compared organic farming with conventional one for agricultural income, producer price and output by items. And then it proposed the method of item selection and crop system from a diversification point of view. The coefficient of variation to producer prices in organic farming was 4.7%, and conventional one was 30.3% because organic products have been produced in a system of contract farming with consumers’" cooperative. This result means the price of organic products is stabler than that of conventional price. And agricultural income of organic farming has been generally known more than that of conventional one. However, agricultural gross income of conventional farming was more than that of organic one by 20.3% in 2010. It was caused by output reduction of a few items(fer example; onion, large green onion, potato and young pumpkin) due to freak weather conditions and constant producer price for several years in organic farming. In order to increase agricultural income, appropriate crop selection and system should be introduced to organic farming. A principal crop is the rice plant and 2 subordinate crops are dry crops at bare field and greenhouse respectively. Thus 5 crop systems that agricultural gross income are relatively increased larger among 15 crop systems estimated are rice+ginger+cucumber, rice+ginger+tomato, rice+large green onion+cucumber, rice+sweet potato+cucumber and rice+onion+ cucumber.
This study was carried out to estimate carbon footprint and to establish of LCA of garlic production system. We have case study in cultivate garlic 1 kg calculate in carbon footprint. LCA carried out to estimate carbon footprint and to establish of LCI (life cycle inventory) database of garlic production system. The data is from Research of Farmer"s income in 2010 (RDA, 2011), and used Pass (5.0.0) program. The value of fertilizer, amount of pesticide input were shown the environmental effect and direct emission. Carbon footprint in agriculture guarantees the choice right the consumer to choose the lower carbon goods. Its can make to strengthen of agriculture and food industry"s reduction effort of CO2. Nowadays consumer requests food"s safety and environment friendly process. Carbon footprint also needs consumer"s relief and incentives.
This study was conducted to select promising green manure crops, providing sufficient amount of nutrients for satisfying fruit tree growth, with the overwintering cover crops grown in organic orchards in 2009. The cover covers were investigated in 13 organic orchards in Chonnam province in April and June. The dry matter in cover crops observed in April and June was the highest for Lolium multiflorum Lam. and Bromus japonicus Thunb., respectively. Total N and K production in April was the highest for Lolium multiflorum Lam, Vicia hirsuta (L.) S. F. Gray and Vicia angustifolia var. segetilis (Thuill.) K. Koch., respectively, with Bromus japonicus Thunb. in June. This study showed that the leguminous crops, Vicia hirsuta (L.) and Vicia angustifolia, would be the prospective cover covers as the both crops provided sufficient amount of N and K2O into the soil. Amount of P2O5 producing from all cover crops provided less than nutrient levels than those of recommended nutrient requirement for satisfying 10- to 15-year-old fruit tree growth.
It has been reported that world population continues to increase so that a matter of food security can be a world-wide problem for mankind. An anticipated rise in world population of 30% and the subsequent increased demand for food brings with it challenges in terms of global resource usage and food security. However, ruminant livestock production and consumption make a large contribution to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which can be attributable to food production. Given the association between GHG and climate change, this is clearly of great concern to the livestock industry worldwide. Nevertheless, ruminant livestock also play an important role in global food security as they can convert the plant cell wall materials and non-protein nitrogen compounds, found widely in plants but indigestible to all monogastric animals including man, into high value proteins for human consumption. Much effort has been made to maximize animal production, feed conversion ratio, and to improve animal breeding in ruminant agriculture. In addition improving feed formulation techniques, developing chemical additives, plant extracts, and new plant varieties for grazing have been tested. Future ruminant production systems will need to capitalize on important benefits of ruminants. It is therefore suggested that ruminant agriculture has a key role to play in maintaining and enhancing provision of quality proteins and essential nutrients for human being but the challenge of reducing GHG emissions, and methane in particular, needs to be successfully addressed.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of crop rotation on the weed occurrence in green onion and red pepper cultivation. Rye and hairy vetch were annually seeded for winter season. The reduction of weed germination was pronounced by about 50% in green onion field, but was not significant in red pepper field through rye cropping. Among weed species, the germination of Abutilon theophrasti, Cyperus iria and Digitaria ciliaris was distinctly inhibited by exudate of rye root, but not by that of hairy vetch in vitro experiment. The return of rye biomass into onion field decreased amount of weed biomass but increased index of weed diversity.
This study was conducted to evaluate soil nutrient concentrations and N uptake efficiency of paddy rice as affected by nutrient sources from 2009 to 2011. The treatments included chemical fertilizer, compost, oilcake, oilcake 2X, hairy vetch, vetch+rye, and control. Nutrient applications were made at rates equivalent to approximately 90 kg of actual N per hectare. Oilcake had the lowest C:N ratio from the raw materials, but compost had the highest C:N ratio of 34:1. Soil pH and concentrations of C, N, Ca, and Mg were unaffected by nutrient source treatments. N uptake efficiency was the greatest for oilcake-treated rice compared to those treated by NPK, hairy vetch, and compost in 2009 and 2010. Composttreated rice had the greatest N uptake efficiency in 2011 when the high amount of precipitation occurred.
Rumen fermentative characteristic is useful indicators of the quality of ruminant feed stuffs and diets. An in vitro rumen fermentation experiment was therefore carried out to compare fermentation patterns among three forage sources. These were whole crop barley (WCBS), Italian ryegrass silage (IRGS) and rice straw silages (RSS). Rice straw (RS) was the control, making the treatments 4 in total. Forages were randomly allocated to serum bottles. The incubation times were arranged 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48 and 72h at 39℃, respectively. Each forage source was replicated 3 times per incubation time. At each sampling time, total gas and pH were measured, whilst individual volatile fatty acids (VFAs), total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) were determined later after storing samples at -20℃. Acetate: Propionate ratio (A/P) was then calculated. Forage source had a significant effect (P
Farming using natural salts for supply of nutrients to crops is increasing recently. It is necessary to evaluate the salt accumulation in soil and the effects on crop growth by treatment of natural salt. This study was conducted at the organic cultivation fields which garlics were planted. The treatments were no natural salts (control) and plots applied 100~600 kg ha-1 with natural salts. Soil samples were taken from the 0 to 25 cm depth at 12 and 107 day (harvest time) after natural salts application. The results showed that electrical conductivity (EC), exchangeable Na (Exch.-Na+) and Cl- were increased by application of natural salts. But, pH and exchangeable cations (K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+) had not significantly differences among treatments. In 300 kg ha-1 plots of natural salt, the level of EC, Exch.-Na+ and Cl- in top soil (0-5 cm) was were increased more 0.3, 3.7, and 12.7 times than control plot, respectively. EC, Exch.-Na+, and Cl- were highest in the top 5 cm of soil and decreased with depth at 12 days after natural salts application, but were decreased in the plower layer (0-15cm) at the harvest time because they were leached with natural rain. An increasing the application level of natural salt resulted in increasing of sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, and percentage of soil dispersion. The concentration of nutrient uptake such as total nitrogen (T-N), chloride (Cl) in garlic had significant difference between control and plots applied with natural salts The content of T-N of garlic in plots with natural salt application was lower than control plot, but Cl is higher than control plot.
