The concentrations of odor and volatile organic compound (VOC)-inducing substances were measured using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometers (SIFT-MS). SIFT-MS can continuously measure the concentration of odor-causing substances and VOCs in real time without pre-treatment steps. Measurements were conducted during the day and at night at 10 spots in the chemical block of the Sihwa industrial complex. Similar measurement results were observed in the daytime and nighttime for materials except methyl ethyl ketone with high concentrations. A high concentration of hydrogen sulfide was also measured at night. It is expected that an amount of emissions of VOCs and odor-causing substances under the absence of inspection can be traced if measured at other industrial complexes in vulnerable times.
The use of printing inks containing organic solvents by the master, offset and screen printing process implies the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the work environment. In this study, the volatile content of inks was evaluated by using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), in which the solvent is evaporated. And, to identify the the characterization of VOCs emissions from printing inks, air samples were collected in a thermal extractor (TE) and analyzed by thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS). Weight loss curves suggest that there are two main stages, such as dry fastening and chemical curing. As the result, the first stage of mass loss (below 100oC) was due to VOC evaporation. At this stage, master and offset inks are slightly stable thermally up to 100oC, but screen inks weight loss increases distinctly beyond 25oC. The volatile content is higher in screen inks than in the master and offset inks. The results of the mass-specific TVOC emission rate of the master, offset, and screen inks were 6.3 μg/(g·h), 8.4 μg/(g·h), and 212.2 μg/(g·h), respectively. Then the TVOC emission rate of the screen inks was 25~33 times higher than that of the master and offset inks. The main species were 1-Ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone, 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene, 1,2,3-Trimethylbenzene, 1,2,4,5-Tetramethylbenzene, 1-Methoxy-2- propanol, Decane, Undecane, and Nonane.
대테러 활동으로 정보활동과 범죄수사 활동이 정비되어야 하지만, 우리나라는 상대적으로 테러 발생 시, 국가수사권 운용과 관련된 법적, 제도적, 그리고 집행적 문제가 소홀하다. 경험적으로 보면 우리나라의 경우 직접적인 테러가 발생하지 않았고 또한, 북한의 대남도발을 테러가 아닌 군사도발로 바라보고 있는 측면도 적지 않다. 최근 북한의 돌발적인 통신차단, 대탄도미사일 재정비 등과 같은 행위를 보더라도 북한을 바라보는 시각을 명확하게 하여야 할 필요가 있으며, 아울러, 그에 맞는 법률적, 제도적, 집행적 가이드라인이 논의되어야 하는 시점이다. 이 연구는 미국의 테러 관련 법제도인 애국법과 음모법, RICO법, AEDPA법에 관하여 살펴보고, 해당 부처의 수사절차와 기법 및 사례를 알아봄으로써 우리가 북한을 바라보는 시각을 명확히 하여야 한다. 예를 들면 현 북한의 도발을 군사도발이 아닌 테러로 바라보았을 때, 적용할 수 있는 법률을 살펴보고, 어떠한 사례를 참고 및 적용할 수 있는지 시사점을 제시하였다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 미국의 사례를 통하여 국내 사례에 적용할 수 있는 새로운 시사점을 모색해 보았다.
This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of odorous components that have been generated from the downtown sewer system based on twenty-three survey items for complex odor and designated offensive odor. As a result of the research, the contribution rates for the causative materials of the odor indicated 73.5% of hydrogen sulfide, 26.0% of methyl mercaptan, 0.4% of dimethyl sulfide, and 0.1% of dimethyl disulfide. The occurrence for the odorous materials according to sampling site revealed data of which contribution rates showed 56.9% of hydrogen sulfide and 36.8% of methyl mercaptan from the combined sewer system in the business district; whereas the combined sewer system in the residential area showed 16.4% of dimethyl sulfide and 4.3% of dimethyl disulfide. The seasonal occurrence rate of the odor materials was observed higher in summer and lower in winter And, the combined sewer system in the business district recorded the highest concentration of 4.61 ppm of hydrogen sulfide among the sampling site. An hourly occurrence rate for the odor materials consistently showed the greatest increase between 11:00 and 14:00 at each location and showed a decreasing tendency afterward.
The cooking-generated particles are major indoor sources of air pollution. Recently, the performance of the range hood is focused on particle removal performance. Range hood with an auxiliary air supply system can improve the fine and ultrafine particles removal efficiency by making a supply air during cooking activities. The particles were measured in the experimental building by varying ventilation types. Only operating range hood during the cooking activities was not enough to reduce the cooking-generated particles. Despite operating range hood systems, fine and ultrafine particle concentrations were maintained when cooking was finished. The range hood with a make-up air supply system can reduce the indoor particle concentration below background conditions when those systems were operated after cooking. In this study, the assessment of cooking-generated particle removal efficiency of the range hood with an auxiliary air supply system was conducted. The removal efficiency of ultrafine particles showed trends similar to the removal efficiency of fine particles.
Several analytical measurement techniques have been developed over the years for ammonia (NH3). However, the field monitoring of NH3 still remains a significant challenge owing to the wide range of possible environmental conditions and NH3 concentration. In this regard, it is imperative to ensure the quality control of techniques to measure the NH3 emission levels reliably. A present study was conducted to compare the five analytical methods for the measurement of atmospheric NH3 via validation tests under laboratory and field conditions. The analytical instruments applied in the present study were based on wet chemistry, gas detection tube, electrochemical sensor, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and cavity ring-down spectroscopy. The reproducibility and linearity of all the analyzed methods were observed to be high with the relative standard deviation and coefficient of determination (R2) being 10% and > 0.9, respectively. In the case of wet chemistry and high NH3 concentration, the measured NH3 results were found to be close to the actual standard gas levels. Response times of electrochemical sensor showed faster from the instruments utilized more than one year and the high NH3 concentrations. In the field tests, NH3 concentration showed higher in the manure storage tank compared with the pig-pen. In both cases, the NH3 concentration levels measured by gas detection tube were found to be quite different from that of wet chemistry. It was proposed that such differences in NH3 concentration could arise due to the inherent instrumental characteristics and the variations in air velocity during sampling/measurement. The periodic instrumental maintenance, verification, replicate analyses, and suitable consideration of environmental factors should be considered for a more reliable measurement of NH3 concentration under real field conditions.
울펀든 보고서는 법과 도덕의 규범적 관계에 관하여 유명한 하트-데 블린 논쟁의 계기가 되었다. 그 보고서는 “공익에 반하지 않는다면, 사적인 도덕문제에 형법이 관여할 수 없다”는 원칙에 기초하여서, 성인들이 합의하여 사적으로 행하는 동성애행위를 비범죄화할 것을 권고하였다. 그러나 성매매에 관하여는 성판매여성들을 길거리에서 내쫓기 위하여 관련 형사법의 구성요건을 강화하고 형량을 높이는 반(反)자유주의적인 권고를 하였다. 이 연구는 울펀든 원칙 자체에 그런 반(反)자유주의적인 사용 가능성이 있는지를 다음의 문제들을 검토해서 답하고자 한다. [문제1] 울펀든 원칙은 문제되는 행위에 대한 도덕적 평가와 무관하게 사용될 수 있는가? [문제2] 울펀든 원칙은 형법이 관여할 수 없는 자유로운 영역을 확인 하는데 유용한 지침인가? [문제3] 울펀든 원칙이 자유주의와 무관하게 사용될 가능성이 있는가? 데블린과 하트의 논변에서 이 문제들이 어떻게 다루어졌는지를 보고나서 이 문제들을 검토한 결과 다음의 결론에 이르렀다. (ⅰ) 울펀든 원칙은 문제되는 행위에 대한 도덕적 평가와 무관하게 사용되기 어렵다. (ⅱ) 울펀든 원칙은 형법이 관여할 수 없는 행위영역을 확인하는 유용한 지침이 될 수 없다. (ⅲ) 울펀든 원칙은 자유주의와 무관하게 사용될 수 있다. 그리고 그 과정에서 다음도 논증하였다. (ⅳ) 데블린과 하트의 논쟁에서는 [문제3]이 소홀히 다루어졌다. (ⅴ) (ⅰ)~(ⅲ)의 결론은 밀의 『자유론(On Liberty)』이나 도덕이론 에서 해악원칙만을 떼어낸 ‘단순한 해악원칙(the Simple Harm Princip le)’에도 적용될 것으로 보인다.
The urban expressway is widely used to avoid traffic jams in highly-populated urban areas. However, vehicle exhaust can be easily transported to the neighboring area including residential buildings. In this study, we investigated the transport and penetration of vehicle exhaust into the nearby high-story residential building. Black carbon (BC) and lung deposited surface area (LDSA) concentrations were monitored every 1 min using an aethalometer (AE51, Magee) and a nanoparticle aerosol monitor (AeroTrak 9000, TSI), respectively. For comparison, the measurement was carried out in both the living room and balcony of the apartment from January 18 to January 25, 2016. The CO2 concentration indicated the presence of residents in the living room and transport of vehicle exhaust from the roadway in the balcony. Its diurnal variation showed a significant difference between weekdays and the weekend, implying the different time activity of residents and traffic volume. BC and LDSA concentrations were 1.4±1.5 μg/m3 and 53.9±45.0 μm2/cm3 indoors, and 1.9±1.0 μg/m3, 76.2±34.5 μm2/cm3 outdoors, respectively. The indoor to outdoor concentration ratios range from 0.6 to 0.8, indicating the significant influence of outdoor vehicle exhaust. The highest concentrations of BC and LDSA were observed in the morning rush hours, except for those indoors during the weekend. In particular, the outdoor effect is significant during the morning rush hours. Indoor air quality management is urgently needed for residents living near the urban expressway.
The number of complaints of odor in urban area has been increased due to mixed industrial areas of odor-related factories and municipal waste treatment odor-producing facilities located in adjacent residential regions. In this study, the characteristics of odor were reviewed according to two types of complaint from regions in Incheon area. In this study, the characteristics of odor were reviewed in two patterns of odor complaints in Incheon area such as the complaints are maintained high continuously and are increased in recent period. International city with largescale residential areas with the environmental facilities and redevelopment of residential regions with the adjacent industrial complexes and other odor emission sources were analyzed. Based on these characteristics, the odor management measures of major odor generating sources in order to improve urban environment were discussed with reducing odor complaints effectively.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate indoor air pollutants of children’s facilities in libraries. The indoor pollutants, which were managed under the “Indoor Air Quality Control Standards” and “Environmental Safety Standards for Children’s Activity Zones,” were measured within five months. The new environmental pollutants such as phthalates and pesticides were also measured. The pollutant-measuring device was installed in children’s spaces in libraries and children’s libraries of the metropols. The result of investigating indoor pollutants showed that the concentration of fungus and floating bacteria had low distributions due to the use of air purifiers in all libraries. The concentration of HCHO and TVOCs was also measured lower than the environmental standards in well-ventilated libraries. On the other hand, phthalates and pesticides were detected in all libraries. In the case of heavy metals, they were mainly found in the finishing materials of the library walls and floors. As a result, indoor pollutants are managed under court receivership. On the other hand, phthalates and pesticides, which are not regulated by environmental standards should be managed because they were detected in all libraries.
현행의 사실적시 명예훼손죄가 보호법익으로 삼는 이른바 외적 명예는 그것이 허명이라고 할 때, 그 근본에서부터 과연 형사제재라고 하는 가장 강력한 수단으로 보호할만한 가치가 있는 것인가에 대한 의문을 품고 있다. 이외에도 사실적시 명예훼손죄가 가진 맹점으로 성범죄 피해자가 가해자의 실명을 공표하는 경우에 대해서까지 사실적시 명예훼손죄로 처벌받을 위험성이 없지 않다는 것이 지적되고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 진실적시 행위를 사실적시 명예훼손죄라는 범죄로 규정하여 형사제재를 가하면서 더구나 추상적 위험범으로까지 보호하는 현행 형법 규정은 그 존치의 타당성을 찾기 어렵다고 여겨진다. 그러므로 현재의 사실적시 명예 훼손죄에 대한 처벌규정은 폐지하거나 적어도 ‘사생활의 비밀’을 보호법 익으로 하도록 명확하게 개정할 필요가 있다. 사실적시 명예훼손죄에 대한 현행 형법 제307조 제1항을 ‘사생활의 비밀을 침해하는 사실’을 적시하는 행위를 구성요건으로 하도록 개정하는 것은 우선 죄형법정주의의 명확성의 원칙과 형법의 보장적 기능을 확보 하는 차원에서 의미가 있다. 왜냐하면 형법상 허용되는 행위와 금지되는 행위를 명확히 규정함으로써 법률의 수범자인 일반 시민의 행동의 자유를 보장하고, 아울러 법원에 대해서도 재판규범을 명확히 제시하여 법적 안정성을 도모할 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 또한 사실적시 명예훼손죄가 이른바 개인적 법익에 대한 죄로 분류됨에도 불구하고 실제에 있어서는 ‘정부정책’ 등에 대한 공적 관점의 비판을 이른바 공직자이면서 동시에 개인으로서의 지위를 가진자에 대한 ‘공적인 사안’에 대한 비판으로 접근하는 것이 아니라 ‘한 개인’에 대한 사실적시 명예훼손으로 접근하여 구속수사를 하는 등 현재의 남용현상을 방지하는 데 일조할 수도 있을 것이다.
The topic of indoor air quality has attracted great interest since urban dwellers spend over 90% of their time indoors, such as public facilities, public transport and homes. In this study, the changes and current status of indoor air quality management and improvement policies for public facilities in Korea were discussed. Furthermore, we investigated the concentration and contamination status of indoor air pollutants based on the indoor air quality guidance and inspection report from 2007-2017 published by the Ministry of Environment, Korea. As a result, we found that while the PM10 concentration in public facilities decreased consistently, there was no clear change in the CO2 concentration. The HCHO concentrations were high in museums, art galleries, and postpartum centers, etc. The child care centers showed a high concentration of TCB. In conclusion, we suggested that it is necessary to focus on target substances according to the type of facility to manage indoor air quality efficiently. Intensive management and monitoring are particularly needed in child care centers to improve the indoor air quality.
Canine inflammatory mammary carcinoma (CIMC) similar to human inflammatory breast cancer is a very aggressive, metastatic type of cancer. Previous studies have introduced a new type of tumor angiogenesis called vasculogenic mimicry that may play an important role in the progression of inflammatory mammary cancer. The purpose of this study is to investigate the development process of vessels by neoplastic cells in CIMC. Patient dog, 14-year old Shit-Tzu female, had a hard and somewhat movable dark-reddish mammary tumor, sized 6.2 cm in diameter. Bloody dark turbid exudate was released from the tumor. In addition to histological examination, immunohistochemistry for pancytokeratin, VCAM-1, MECA- 32, TWIST-1, and Ki-67 was respectively performed using the ABC method. Histologically, the inflammatory mammary carcinoma was characterized by tubular solid tumor emboli within the lymphatic vessels surrounded by desmoplastic fibrous connective tissue. Some of the neoplastic cells were transforming into elongate or spindle shapes and forming small vessel-like structures in the solid tumor mass. The neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for VCAM-1 and MECA-32, but showed low immunoreactivity for Ki-67. Immunoreactive neoplastic cells for VCAM-1 and MECA-32 suggested the possibility that the neoplastic cells transform into endothelial cells of vessels by epithelial-mesenchymal transition, further supported by serial morphological changes identified by histological investigation and immunohistochemistry for TWIST-1. The high capacity of the neoplastic cells forming the vasculatures in CIMC explains the high ratio of metastasis to other regions, even though Ki-67 index was not so high.
Limb amputation is a salvage surgical procedure relatively common in small animals and other species. Wild animals after forelimb amputation have many difficulties in returning to normal life because forelimbs of arboreal quadrupeds are used to carry most of their weight and hold feed. This study investigated forelimb amputation and its outcomes in two raccoon dogs. Two male raccoon dogs presented for radio-ulnar fractures. Shoulder disarticulation amputation was applied to protect the thoracic cavity and reduce surgical time. After the operation, they could run comparatively faster with three legs. As they had good body condition and regular appetite during the hospitalization period, they were released to the area from which they were captured. Six months after the release, one of the raccoon dogs represented for hair loss by mites. It showed satisfactory function of the existing three limbs. Thus, amputation of forelimb could be considered as a treatment in raccoon dogs with severe limb status.
Radioisotope ADME (RI-ADME) studies are enabling visualization of the biodistribution in molecular imaging. We applied RI-ADME to investigate the tumor targeting capacity and biodistribution of trastuzumab-monomethyl auristatin F (LCB14-0110) in JIMT-1 xenograft mice and healthy marmoset. The LCB14-0110 was labelled with 125I. 125I-LCB14-0110 was intravenously administered to the animals. The gamma-count and single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) was conducted for biodistributioon and bioimaging of the biopharmaceutics. Tumor uptake in xenograft mice was highest at three-day after 125I-LCB14-0110 administration in both the biodistribution and SPECT/CT bioimaging. Alternatively, blood and organ tissues showed gradual decrease in radioactivity over time. In marmosets, radioactivity in all organ tissues rapidly reduced and no specific targeting of organs was observed in the biodistribution study and SPECT/CT imaging. Hence, 125ILCB14- 0110 demonstrated effective tumor targeting capacity and accumulated in JIMT-1 cell-bearing mice. However, accumulation did not occur in the organs of xenograft mice. Additionally, marmosets showed rapidly decrease in radioactivity throughout the entire body without accumulation in the normal organs. We also confirmed that the drug distribution was similar in normal organs between the two experimental animal species except spleen. Therefore, 125I is expected to be a useful tool in the study of RI-ADME in biopharmaceuticals through minimal antibody modification.
Carcass grade primarily depends on marbling of intramuscular fat, which is associated with the texture and tenderness of beef. Accordingly, various economical molecular tests for high intramuscular fat in beef have been attempted. Especially, Hanwoo (Korean Cattle) intramuscular fat has higher levels of monounsaturated fatty acids than that in the beef of other cattle. Intramuscular fats are associated with levels of lipid metabolic genes in the liver transcriptome. Therefore, hepatic triglyceride synthesis can considerably increase intramuscular fat. To investigate the relationship between hepatic lipogenesis and carcass grade, we analyzed 52 Hanwoo liver samples from domestic farms, and evaluated lipid levels and transcript levels of glucose and lipid metabolism-related genes according to carcass grade. Oil-Red-O staining revealed fatty livers in high carcass grades. Moreover, we found significantly higher levels of mRNA for lipogenesis, glycolysis, and triglyceride synthesis genes in high carcass grade livers. Importantly, progesterone receptor membrane component 1 (Pgrmc1) levels were significantly lower in high carcass grade livers. As Pgrmc1 suppression is correlated with induction of de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and glycolysis genes, it has a diagnostic impact for high carcass grades. These results could be used for genetic improvements in carcass grades of cattle. More importantly, as Pgrmc1 can be detected in blood peripheral nucleated cells, it also has value for rapid blood diagnosis.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as the most common liver disease in industrialized countries. Recently, natural compounds that may be beneficial for improving NAFLD have received increasing attention. Artemisia annua L. is the source of antimalarial phytomolecule, artemisinin, which has been reported to prevent obesity. However, the effect of A. annua extract on hepatic lipid metabolism remains unclear. This study was performed to determine the protective effect of Artemisia annua extract (AAE) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hepatic lipid accumulation, and elucidate the molecular mechanisms behind its effects in vivo and in vitro. We found that HFD-fed mice with AAE administration (50 mg/kg/day) for 8 weeks dramatically reduced hepatic lipid accumulation compared to the control mice taken with HFD alone. The body and liver weights of AAE group were significantly lower than those of HFD group, and oral administration of AAE remarkably suppressed the serum levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), fasting glucose, alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in HFD-fed mice. AAE significantly increased the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in the liver of HFD-fed mice and HepG2 hepatocytes. Moreover, AAE downregulated the hepatic expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in HFD-fed mice and high glucose-treated HepG2 cells. In addition, the inhibitory effects of AAE on the overexpression of SREBP-1c and FAS were attenuated by compound C, which is the specific AMPK inhibitor, in high glucose-treated HepG2 cells. These results indicated that AAE may represent a promising approach for the prevention and treatment of obesity-related NAFLD via the activation of AMPK and the regulation of AMPK-dependent lipogenic genes.
대법원 2016. 10. 27. 선고 2014도16271 판결(대상판결)은 관세포탈죄를 처벌하기 위한 포탈세액을 산정하는 방법으로 관세법 제31조에서 제35조까지 보충적 과세가격 결정방법을 사용할 수 있다고 판시하였다. 반면 관세법에서는 관세법 제31조에 따른 ‘거래가격을 기초로 한 관세평가’가 과세가격 결정의 원칙임을 선언하고 있으며 이는 WTO 관세평가 협정을 따른 것이다. 대상판결의 위 판시는 실체적 진실의 발견을 목적으로 하고 죄형법정 주의의 원칙의 따라야 하는 형사소송에서 실제 거래가격에 따른 관세액 이 아닌 실제 거래가격에 가깝게 추정하는 것에 불과한 보충적 과세가격 결정방법으로 산정한 관세액으로 관세포탈죄의 구성요건인 포탈세액을 결정할 수 있는지 의문을 던진다. 본고는 먼저 조세포탈죄를 처벌하기 위해 포탈세액을 ‘추계(추정계산)’ 할 수 있다는 조세포탈죄에서의 논의를 대상판결에 적용하여, 예외적인 방법으로 포탈세액의 기준이 되는 과세가격을 추정할 수 있는지 검토하였다. 그리고 WTO 관세평가 협정의 원칙이 어떤 의미를 가지는지를 살펴보고, 이러한 원칙과 대상판결의 관계를 ‘실체적 진실 발견’의 관점에서 분석했다. 그리고 앞선 논의를 바탕으로 대상판결이 형법의 명확성의 원칙과 형사소송법의 증명책임의 원칙을 위반하지 않는지 검토하였다. 대상판결은 죄형법정주의 원칙과 WTO 관세평가 협정의 원칙에 부합하며, 관세포탈범에 대한 처벌의 필요성, 관세포탈범에 대한 형사소송에 서의 실체적 진실발견, 그리고 형사법의 원칙들이 적절히 균형을 이루어져 있다고 평가할 수 있다. 다만, 보충적 과세가격 결정방법을 적용함에 있어 명확성의 원칙이 한 걸음 양보해야 한다는 점은 아쉬움으로 남는다. 따라서 본고는 검사가 보충적 과세가격을 결정하는데 기초가 되는 사실이 정확하다는 점과 해당 방법이 실제 포탈세액을 최대한 근사하게 추정할 수 있는 객관적 방법이라는 점을 합리적으로 보여야 한다는 점을 제시하였다. 본고는 검사의 이러한 입증책임이 전제되어야 대상판결이 보충적 과세가격 결정방법을 통해 포탈세액을 특정할 수 있다고 판시한 것이 명확성의 원칙에 어긋나지 않음을 강조하였다.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and currently there are many approaches developing towards cancer treatment. Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often painful and have adverse effects. The mechanism of apoptosis is a complex process and it involves different pathways in its mechanism of action. Apoptosis can be caused by signals within the cell such as stress, or by extrinsic signals such as ligands binding to cell surface death receptors. The programmed cell death plays a important role in the several physiological and pathological processes. It plays important role in homeostasis. Flavonoids have gained importance as anticancer agents promoting cytotoxicity and apoptosis in cancer cells. Flavonoids are present in many medicinal plants which are a kind of ubiquitous natural products and essential active ingredients. They have strong biological activities with high efficiency and low toxicity, possessing good preventive and cure effects on different tumor forms. Flavonoids such as Scutellarein, Pectolinarigenin and Naringin have reported to possess significant anti-cancer effects on different cancer cell lines till date. In this review, we provide a summary about the anti-cancer effect of the three flavonoids and its mechanisms of action that can be used in future for understanding their potent anti-tumor properties.
The development of drugs from natural plant sources is at growing interest due to the limitations of chemical drugs in terms of side effects and cost-effective factors of natural medicines. Among the various components contained in natural plant materials, flavonoids are of increasing interest because of their extended biological benefits. Flavonoids are classified into various types according to their structure and possess different activities depending on the structure. In this study, the flavonoids contained in Artemisia, native to Korea were examined and reviewed. HPLC chromatograms of three Artemisia species (Artemisia annua L., Artemisia iwayomogi and Artemisia argyi H.) were examined from published sources and their component analysis by MS data were summarized. The various flavonoids of Artemisia were classified into 12 types according to the main structure, and 10 flavonoids based on various activities were examined. The 10 flavonoids were identified as quercetin, kaempferol, rhamnetin, diosmetin, luteolin, methoxyflavone, catechin, apigenin, malvidin and genkwanin with extensive reported studies till date. The ten flavonoids examined have been reported to be effective in preventing and treating various diseases and exhibit activities such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic and anti-Alzheimer. The collective results from the reported studies suggest that the three types of Korean native Artemisia, contains various flavonoids with beneficial activities and may have therapeutic effects against diseases.
