The objective of this study is to analyze the indoor air quality of multi-use facilities using an IoT-based monitoring and control system. Thise study aims to identify effective management strategies and propose policy improvements. This research focused on 50 multi-use facilities, including daycare centers, medical centers, and libraries. Data on PM10, PM2.5, CO2, temperature, and humidity were collected 24 hours a day from June 2019 to April 2020. The analysis included variations in indoor air quality by season, hour, and day of the week (including both weekdays and weekends). Additionally, ways to utilize IoT monitoring systems using big data were propsed. The reliability analysis of the IoT monitoring network showed an accuracy of 81.0% for PM10 and 76.1% for PM2.5. Indoor air quality varied significantly by season, with higher particulate matter levels in winter and spring, and slightly higher levels on weekends compared to weekdays. There was a positive correlation found between outdoor and indoor pollutant levels. Indoor air quality management in multi-use facilities requires season-specific strategies, particularly during the winter and spring. Furhtermore, enhanced management is necessary during weekends due to higher pollutant levels.

This study was carried out to examine the concentration and distribution characteristics of total airborne bacteria (TAB) and airborne mold in non-regulated public-use facilities. The arithmetic mean (AM) of the TAB in all facilities was 356.5 ± 419.3 CFU/m3, and the geometric means (GM) was 157.8 CFU/m3, which did not exceed the standard value of 800 CFU/m3. The highest concentration was 637.3 ± 372.0 CFU/m3 (GM: 534.9 CFU/m3) in the underground shopping mall. The AM of airborne mold in all facilities was 448.2 ± 429.6 CFU/m3 (GM: 285.4 CFU/m3), which did not exceed the standard value of 500 CFU/m3, but was close to it. In particular, subway station (AM: 661.5 ± 441.2 CFU/m3, GM: 540.0 CFU/ m3), large-scale store (AM: 587.6 ± 683.2 CFU/m3, GM: 297.8 CFU/m3), and private educational institute (AM: 528.8 ± 379.6 CFU/m3, GM: 373.7 CFU/m3) exceeded the standard. Operational taxonomic unit of 16S rDNA and ITS2 rDNA region was analyzed to profile bacteria and mold component in the air of the public-use facilities. As a result, Pseudomonas and Morganella are the major bacterial groups. Regarding mold, Aspergillus, Candida, Malassezia, and Penicillium are the major groups. Component of each airborne bacterial and mold groups varied depending on the type of public-use facilities.

This study chiefly aims to clarify efficient methods considering behavioral pattern of refugees in multi-use facilities which can be applied to architectural planning. Accordance with COVID-19 situation, it is mandatory to check the temperature of visitors as a measure for the prevention of COVID-19 in multiuser facilities. When disaster occurs, for people in multi-use facilities such as medical facilities, museum, concert hall etc, it is difficult to find out short and right route to outside since the spatial characteristics are not familiar to visitors. If we design floor plans and circulation system considering behavioral pattern of refugees we can prevent the spread of disasters when they happen.

This study measured the suspended fungal concentration in indoor multiple facilities nationwide. The regions were selected as representative cities by region: Seoul, Gyeonggi (Incheon), Gangwon, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Busan. A total of 2028 regional comparisons, including department stores, schools, public toilets, libraries, and banks, subway, sports facilities and comparative analysis were conducted for each multi-use facility industry. Among the nationwide, Among the regions, the average concentration of floating mold in indoor multi-use facilities was the lowest in Busan at 394.67 CFU/m3, followed by Gyeonggi and Incheon 487.90 CFU/m3, Seoul 542.84 CFU/m3, Daejeon 809.30 CFU/m3, Gangwon 1,145.22 CFU/m3, Gwangju was 1,371.10 CFU/m3 in the order. Busan was the lowest, and Gangwon was the highest. The reason that Busan, which has a high average temperature and population density, shows a lower mold concentration than Gangwon, is that floating mold in the indoor air is not affected by the external atmospheric environment, population density, and number of facility users. Although it cannot be said that there is no influence of the atmospheric environment, it was found that the indoor environment has different characteristics from the outdoor environment. The importance of air quality management has been confirmed, and further, it is necessary to subdivide the management standards by region and multi-use facilities, and the management standards need to be converted to maintenance rather than recommendations.

In this study, indoor air quality indices (IAQI-C and IAQI-E) were developed for child care centers and elderly care centers based on health effects, and compared to the air quality index (CAI) for outdoor atmosphere. In addition, composite indices that integrate individual indices for each pollutant were developed to quickly and conveniently recognize the current air quality. Among all data, 71.2% and 35.6% belonged to the grades 'Good' and 'Moderate' for child care centers and elderly care centers, respectively. This assessment is more stringent than the CAI's criteria.

Radon is known to be one of the representative carcinogen materials, and may cause severe health damage to the human body with long-term exposure. Without proper treatment such as natural and mechanical ventilation, indoor radon concentration tends to increase as time passes. In this aspect, it is necessary to maintain indoor radon concentration below the domestic indoor air quality (IAQ) management standard by continuous monitoring. However, the number of practical devices which can detect radon concentration is scarce and most of the existing devices are very costly. Among such devices, the RS9A, a prototype of a radon detector, detects indoor radon concentration and is priced significantly lower compared to other existing radon detectors. In this paper, we investigated the RS9A for the continuous detection of indoor radon gas and compared its performance to a commercially available radon detector (RadonEye). We measured indoor radon concentrations at two separate sites by using both detectors simultaneously. The indoor radon concentrations measured by the aforementioned detectors revealed a high correlation. Therefore, the RS9A can be considered as an appropriate candidate for use as a continuous indoor radon monitoring system.

The topic of indoor air quality has attracted great interest since urban dwellers spend over 90% of their time indoors, such as public facilities, public transport and homes. In this study, the changes and current status of indoor air quality management and improvement policies for public facilities in Korea were discussed. Furthermore, we investigated the concentration and contamination status of indoor air pollutants based on the indoor air quality guidance and inspection report from 2007-2017 published by the Ministry of Environment, Korea. As a result, we found that while the PM10 concentration in public facilities decreased consistently, there was no clear change in the CO2 concentration. The HCHO concentrations were high in museums, art galleries, and postpartum centers, etc. The child care centers showed a high concentration of TCB. In conclusion, we suggested that it is necessary to focus on target substances according to the type of facility to manage indoor air quality efficiently. Intensive management and monitoring are particularly needed in child care centers to improve the indoor air quality.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this research was to select sites that are appropriate for the storage of individual protective gear that can be used by traffic-controlling police when chemical terrorism occurs. METHODS : A storage facility, which is classified as Class A in the Act on Safety Action at Facilities Vulnerable to Terrorism, is defined for use in the event of soft-target chemical terrorism. Considering the number of controlled intersections and the police stations/substations within a radius of 750 m, the jurisdiction of traffic police and grade of protective gear were identified using ammonia, which has the widest protection boundary among known chemical terrorism substances. RESULTS : The results indicate that mobilization should only occur after the police have put on protective gear at the nearby station, regardless of the police district. Additionally, Class B protective gear should be furnished if there is a police station/substation within the jurisdiction, whereas Class C protective gear should be furnished if there is police station/substation outside of the jurisdiction. CONCLUSIONS : Because it is inefficient to keep protective gear at all police stations/substations, appropriate sites should be selected in accordance with chemical terrorism action strategy.

A survey on the indoor air quality of schools was conducted on a total of 10 schools in each location, such as industrial zones, roadside zones and clean zones of the Jeonbuk Province. Regardless of their location, 75% of the schools were not suitable to the environmental standard, and five schools were inadequate in both the first and the second half measurement results. Compared to the public facilities survey conducted by the Jeollabukdo Institute Health and Environment Research from 2008 to 2016, the concentration of CO2, total airborne bacteria (TAB), and PM10, with the exception of HCHO, was higher in school classrooms than in any other public facilities. The correlations between pollutants and test items demonstrated that total airborne bacteria (TAB) were significantly correlated with the degree of ventilation, and the PM10 was correlated with the cleaning status, respectively. Although the other test items of indoor air quality in the school were measured in the same way as the public facilities measurement methods, the PM10 is applied in accordance with the simplified method. In order to investigate the difference between the measurement methods, the results were compared at the same point at the same time. When comparing the concentrations of PM10, the gravimetric method, which is a public facilities measurement method, showed a significant difference from the light scattering method, which is a method of measuring PM10 in schools. By comparison, it was confirmed that the light scattering method was measured lower than the gravimetric method. The light scattering method is useful for confirming the change of the particulate matter, but it is considered difficult to judge the concentration of the particulate matter in the classroom by the instantaneous measurement because of the potential error caused by high humidity, etc. Secondary pollution ions were measured at 17.1% ~ 40.5% in the industrial zone schools, 7.4%~27.4% in the roadside zone schools and 8.1%~21.8% in the clean zone schools, The percentage of pollution ions were not clearly distinguished by location.

In this study, indoor radon concentrations were measured in 56 multiple-use facilities located in Gwangju area from December 2017 to December 2018. The average indoor radon concentration in underground space was 51.70 Bq/m3, and that of the 1st floor was 38.73 Bq/m3, indicating that the indoor radon concentration of underground space was higher than that of the 1st floor. The indoor radon concentration was investigated according to the presence or absence of underground space. The concentration of radon on the 1st floor with underground space was 37.25 Bq/m3, and the concentration of radon on the ground floor without underground space was 47.94 Bq/m3. In the absence of underground space, indoor radon concentration was high. The indoor radon concentration of buildings over 30 years old was 87.26 Bq/m3, indicating a significantly higher indoor radon concentration compared to those of buildings less than 30 years old. The indoor radon concentration was investigated according to the operation of a ventilator. The indoor radon concentration of space without an operating ventilator was 52.17 Bq/m3, and that of space with a ventilator in operation for more than 8 hours per day was 36.31 Bq/m3. This result shows that the indoor radon concentration in the space with an operating ventilator is lower than the space where the ventilator is not in operation. The indoor radon concentration in the space with an operating ventilation system was lower than that on the same floor of the same building, and the indoor radon concentration of enclosed space was about 4.4 times higher than that of open space in the same building. In addition, the indoor radon concentration was measured according to the spatial features. The concentration of indoor radon of enclosed space was 64.76 Bq/m3, which is higher than those of an open space and an active space.

In this study, the distribution of each facility group, the pollution level of local municipalities and the status of self-measurement were investigated and analyzed using data provided by the Ministry of Environment. It was found that most of the workplaces to be managed are facilities of sensitive class, indoor parking lots and largescale stores. The results of the survey on the total pollution level by facility group showed that the rate of contamination was the highest in the facilities where there are many sensitive users, including the subway station and the underground shopping malls. Through self-measurement, in the case of fine particle matter, it was found that it was present in amounts of 51.71 μg/m3, 50.72 μg/m3, 44.47 μg/m3 and 54.44 μg/m3 in medical institutions, day care centers, elderly care facilities and postnatal care centers, respectively. Also, there were facilities exceeding the standard in the medical institutions. However, most of the pollutants in the facilities surveyed by the municipality are higher than the self-measured concentrations, so it is necessary to examine the cause of such pollution.

This study was conducted to investigate the actual condition of fine particles (PM2.5) pollution and to verify the necessity of managing PM2.5 in the indoor environment of public use facilities in Gyeonggi-do. As a result, it was found that PM2.5 concentrations measured for 24 hours ranged from 15.9 to 113.5 μg/m3 and averaged 42.5 μg/ m3, and for 6 hours, ranged from 20.4 to 167.1 μg/m3 and averaged 65.6 μg/m3. Average concentration was highest in subway stations, followed by nursery schools and indoor parking lots. 49 of the 55 sites investigated exceeded the 24hr-PM2.5 standard specified in WHO guidelines (25 μg/m3). The ratio of PM2.5 to PM10 was 70.2% for 24hr and 70.7% for 6hr on average. This means that PM2.5 tends to account for a large proportion of the total particulate pollution in the indoor environment, and that it is essential to control fine particulate matter in order to reduce total particulate matter in the indoor environment. In addition, it was found that the time to be sampled and total sampling time are one of important factors which affect PM2.5 concentration in indoor air quality; therefore, I think that it is necessary to concretely specify the time to be sampled and maximum range of total sampling time in the test method of PM2.5. Recently, regulations on PM2.5 in indoor environments have been strengthened in other countries due to its high risk to human health; however, there is currently no enforceable regulation in Korea. Given that PM2.5 is more harmful to human health than PM10, it is urgently necessary to establish proper policies and regulations to control PM2.5 in indoor environments.

The concern of fine particle (PM2.5) management of outdoor environments has been increasing due to its exposure and related health effects in Korea. As a result, PM2.5 standard in atmosphere environment was regulated in 2015. On the other hand, indoor PM2.5 standard has been required because most people spent their times in indoor environments. In this study, we measured the PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations both indoor and outdoor environments of public-use facilities such as underground stations, underground shopping centers, and nurseries for 24 hour with filter-weighing method in Seoul and Daegu. Measurement duration was from March to April in 2014 during the Asian dust period. At all measurements, indoor to outdoor (I/O) concentration ratios exceeded 1 except 1 day nursery in Daegu in spite of Asian dust period. The ratios of PM2.5 to PM10 concentrations ranged from 0.63 to 0.75 in indoor environments, and from 0.63 to 0.82 in outdoor, indicating that PM2.5 should be carefully managed in indoor environments as well as outdoor atmosphere.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of asbestos containing materials in public facilities in Korea. We investigated 201 public facilities between January and December in 2009. PACM were collected according to EPA AHERA rules, and analyzed using the US EPA method 600/R/116. The air samples from public facilities were analyzed by PCM. For the survey on ACM risk assessment, we used both the ASTM rules and Korea ACM risk assessment(developed by the Korea ministry of employment and labor). Public facilities showed that ceiling textiles contained chrysolite/amosite(2 and 25%) and cement flat boards contained chrysolite(5 and 26%). Also, gaskets contained chrysolite(3 and 95%) and Floor tile & carpet contained chrysolite(less than 1 and 6%). PCM analysis was performed on all air samples, and it was found that the concentration of fiber did not exceed the Korean guideline(0.01f/cc). In this study, it was found that according to the ASTM rule of asbestos material, 70 materials were “Abatement” grade and 344 materials were “Q&M” grade when assessed by ASTM B-line. Furthermore, based on the adjusted Korea ACM risk assessment 22 materials rated as were “Fair” and 390 materials were “Good”.

It is important to develop the smart ventilation system in order to minimize a building energy consumption using ventilation. In this study, We evaluated the efficiency of the smart ventilation system being developed at the nursery. To evaluate the energy savings and carbon dioxide removal efficiency, two kinds of experimental conditions were compared. First, air conditioner and Smart HVAC system were operated. Second, air conditioner was operating and external air was put into the inside by rate of air circulation. It was more effective when working with air conditioning and ventilation system at the same time. If the Smart HVAC system is applied in a multi-use facility, indoor air quality will be comfortable and the social cost will be reduced.

For the matter of elevator, one of the multi-use facilities for unspecified public, the JIS has re-established and reformed to apply to the environment in South Korea for the past 20 years. In the aspect of safety assurance, it was inevitable to suggest improved measures. The government, Ministry of Public Administration and Security has secured the safety by enhancing the safety management functions in the elevator inspection standards and expanding its safety device measures. Further, the international inspection standard has been introduced, which is about unifying inspection standard system into the international standard code. In March 14th 2012, the international standard (EN) has been amended and fully announced. Escalator and passenger conveyor among lift devices have several common danger factor that cause safety accident. First, the accident caused by decreased braking power of brake. Second, the accident caused by the rate difference between handrail and tread-board. Third, the accident caused by defects of contraflow preventing device or carelessness inspection. Fourth, the accident caused by wet tread-board or wet floor of platform which makes passenger slip and fall. As the improvements to prevent and reduce these negligent accidents, the inspection list to check and methods should be subdivided and applied for each accident likelihood cause for safety management enhancement and safety assurance of existing escalator and passenger conveyors. The escalators and passenger conveyors without safety devices in existence should be obliged to modify the part of the system or install additional safety device. With making these measures obligations, it requires to improve the system to be suitable for the international inspection standard and to have measures to prevent safety accidents. It also needs to arrange improvements for skid accident of tread-board by the external environment factors such as snow and rain.
