        Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide and is characterized by degeneration of the optic nerve. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the major contributing factor to optic nerve damage. However, some patients develop glaucoma even with normal IOP. Other factors, including age, race, myopia, and nutrition, can affect glaucoma risk. Dietary fat intake and serum fatty acid composition are closely related with the fatty acid profile of the retina and thus can modulate glaucoma risk. In this study, we collected serum samples from 34 glaucoma patients (26 primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and 8 normal tension glaucoma (NTG)) and 45 healthy controls and analyzed their serum phospholipid fatty acid concentrations. The results show that the ratio of oleic acid to stearic acid (OA/SA), which is an indicator of stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity, was higher in POAG patients when compared to normal controls. The ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid to arachidonic acid (EPA/AA), which is an indirect marker of eicosanoid biosynthesis, was also higher in glaucoma patients (p=0.048). These results imply that dietary fatty acid intake and serum fatty acid profile can influence glaucoma risk. Additional study is necessary to identify the relationship between fatty acids and glaucoma.

        Red Chinese cabbage is rich in anthocyanins, with beneficial effects on anti-obesity and lipid profiles. The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-obesity effects of red Chinese cabbage. Four-weeks old Spague-Dawley male rats were divided into four groups for six weeks as follow: Normal Diet (ND), High Fat Diet (HFD), HFD + Red Chinese Cabbage Diet (RCD), HFD + Red Chinese Cabbage Juice (RCJD). After six weeks, the liver weight was significantly higher in the HFD group than in the other groups, and the RCD and RCJD groups showed similar values to the ND group. The epididymal fats were significantly higher in all high fat diets (HFD, RCD, RCJD) than in the ND group and there was statistical significance in the post-tests when comparing the RCD and RCJD groups with the HFD group. Triglycerides significantly decreased in the RCD group. In conclusion, red Chinese cabbage is rich in anthocyanins, with beneficial effects on organ weight and lipid profiles.

        Krill (Euphausia superba)과 NaF가 Sprague Dawley계 수컷 흰쥐의 체중 및 장기 중량, 혈청 지질성분 및 단백질 함량에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 기본식이를 급여한 대조군인 BD군을 비롯하여 기본식이에 NaF 10 mg을 경구 투여한 BF군, 10%(KF10군), 20%(KF20군), 30%(KF30군)의 krill meal을 첨가 식이에 NaF 10 mg 경구 투여한 군으로 군당 6마리씩 5가지 군으로 나누어 5주간 사육한 결과는 다음과 같다. 흰쥐의 체중은 식이의 krill meal 함량이 증가함에 따라 감소하였고, 대조군인 BD군에 비해 NaF를 경구 투여한 BF군에서 낮게 관찰되었다. 각 장기무게에서의 변화는 간에서 BD 군에 비해 NaF 경구 투여 군에서 유의적으로 낮게 나타났으며(p<0.05), 고환에서의 무게는 KF10군을 제외한 NaF 경구 투여 군에서 높은 것으로 관찰되었다. 심장, 폐, 뇌, 신장, 췌장에서의 각 군의 장기무게는 유의적인 차이가 없었다(p<0.05). 혈청 중 total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, free cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, 혈당 농도는 대조군인 BD군보다 BF군에서 높았지만, krill meal 함량이 증가함에 따라 감소하였고, HDL cholesterol 농도는 BD군보다 BF군에서 낮았으며 krill meal 함량에 따라 점차 증가하는 것으로 관찰되었다. 혈청 중 total protein은 각 군에서 유의적 차이(p<0.05)가 없는 것으로 나타났으며, albumin 농도와 albumin/globulin ratio는 BD군과 BF군은 비슷한 결과가 나타났으나 krill meal 섭취 군에서 감소되었다. Globulin 농도는 KF10군, KF20군, KF30군, BD군, BF군 순으로 높게 관찰되었다. 이와 같은 결과로 미루어 보아, krill meal 식이는 NaF 경구 투여한 흰쥐의 체중, 혈청 지질성분 및 혈당 조절 효과가 있는 것으로 사료된다.

        This study was conducted to verify the effects of Erigeron annuus powder on serum lipid levels of high-fat diet-induced mice from a nutritional viewpoint. Erigeron annuus powder has been used as a folk remedy since ancient times in Korea. There was no significant difference in the weight of the kidneys and spleens of the mice. The high-fat diet group had a significantly higher kidney weight compared to other groups (p<0.05). In the group of mice fed 20% Erigeron annuus powder with a high-fat diet, the concentration of serum LDL-cholesterol was high (p<0.05), whereas the concentration of triglyceride was remarkably lower compared to other groups (p<0.05). The group fed 10% Erigeron annuus with a high-fat diet had the lowest concentration of blood phospholipids (p<0.05) as well as the highest alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase levels in blood (p<0.05). There was no difference in blood insulin concentration. However, blood leptin concentration was significantly higher (5.88±3.53 ng/dL) in mice fed a high-fat diet compared to other groups (p<0.05). Measurements of Erigeron annuus revealed that TPC, ABTS+ radical scavenging activity of trolox, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and the measured value of FRAP were higher in the ethanol extract than in the water extract. Especially, the antioxidant activity effects were excellent for the ABTS+ radical scavenging activities of trolox and FRAP values of Erigeron annuus. Therefore, Erigeron annuus powder showed antioxidant activity. Hence, Erigeron annuus powder drastically lessened triglyceride concentration in blood in high-fat diet-induced mice. Thus, the powder is considered to have utility in the food processing industry. Additional related experiments are ongoing.

        Since Korean ancient times, powder of Rosa rugosa Thunberg has been used as a folk remedy. This study was conducted to verify the effects of Rosa rugosa Thunberg powder on in vitro antioxidant properties and serum lipid levels of high-fat diet-induced mice from a nutritional viewpoint. In the case of Rosa rugosa Thunberg powders, measurement of TPC, ABTS radical scavenging activity of trolox, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and measured value of FRAP were higher in ethanol extract than water extracts. For LDL-cholesterol concentration, mice fed 10% powder of Rosa rugosa Thunberg with high-fat diets showed a high numerical value compared with other groups (p<0.05). When testing for triglyceride concentrations in blood, mice fed 10% and 20% powder of Rosa rugosa Thunberg with high-fat diets showed the lowest numerical values (p<0.05). When testing for blood insulin concentrations, the high-fat diet group showed higher levels than compared to the control group (p<0.05). When testing for blood leptin concentrations, the high-fat diet group was 5.88±3.53 ng/dL, whereas mice fed 10% powder of Rosa rugosa Thunberg with high-fat diets showed a blood leptin level of 10.36±5.96 ng/dL (p<0.05). Therefore, results prove that powder of Rosa rugosa Thunberg reduces triglyceride concentrations in the blood, and could be used as an excellent natural antioxidant in the future.

        본 동물실험은 STZ로 유도한 C57BL/6에게 5% sodium butyrate 를 급여했을 때 항당뇨 및 항염증 효과를 연구하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서 STZ로 당뇨를 유발한 마우스에게 5% sodium butyrate를 급여했을 때 체중과 식이섭취량에서는 크게 유의 적 차이가 없음을 확인하였다(p<0.05). STZ에 의한 당뇨 쥐는 인슐린의 분비가 감소되면서 당대사의 불균형을 초래하며 간 등이 비대해진다고 알려져 있으나, 본 연구에서는 간의 장 기 무게에서는 크게 실험군 간에 유의적인 차이가 없었다 (p<0.05). 또한 비장과 흉선의 무게는 0.5% sodium butyrate 첨가 식이군에서 유의적으로 낮아짐을 알 수 있었다(p<0.05). 당뇨병은 염증 상태로서 고혈당으로 인하여 monocyte에서는 여러 염증성 사이토카인이 분비가 활성화된다. TNF-α, IL-6 등은 염증성 사이토카인으로서 혈관염증의 중요한 마커로 인식되고 있고, 당뇨병 환자들은 이러한 염증성 사이토카인 이 높은 수준으로 활성화 된다. STZ 처리 시 마우스 혈청에서 의 염증성 사이토카인의 분비 및 발현이 증가되었으나, 5% sodium butyrate를 급여했을 때 염증성 사이토카인의 분비 및 발현이 저해됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 sodium butyrate 보충은 당뇨병이 유발된 동물모델에서 혈청지질 농도 및 혈 당 조절, 염증 상태를 개선에 다소간의 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 당뇨병과 같은 만성적인 대사질환 개선 에 sodium butyrate가 효과적인 식이인자가 될 것으로 생각된 다. 그러나 앞으로 더 명확한 효능을 탐색하기 위해서 시료 첨가수준의 다각화 및 여러 가지 보완연구가 필요할 것으로 생각 된다.

        This study investigated the effect of Dolichos lablab extract on the lipid metabolism of rats fed a high fat and cholesterol diet. S-D male rats (n=48) were given 40, 400, or 4000 mg/kg of Dolichos lablab extract and fed a high fat and high cholesterol diet for four weeks (DL-HFC group). As a result, serum levels of total lipids, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were higher in the high fat and high cholesterol group (HFC-group) than the control, and significant differences were observed between the control and the DL-HFC (40, 400, 4000 mg/kg) group. The fat absorption rate increased with a high fat diet feeding, but was higher in the DL-HFC (40, 400, 4000 mg/kg) group.

        본 연구는 안전하면서 효율적으로 비만을 개선시키는데 도움이 될 수 있는 식품소재로 목이버섯을 선정하여 복부비만이 있는 중년 여성의 골밀도 및 혈청지질농도에 미치는 영향에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 30~50대의 복부비만 여성 30명에게 4주 동안 대조군은 목이버섯을 섭취시키지 않았고, 실험군은 목이버섯을 식사와 함께 섭취하도록 하였다. 실험 전 후 골밀도(T-score, Z-score), 총 콜레스테롤, HDL-콜레스테롤, LDL-콜레스테롤, 중성지방을 측정하였다. 연구결과, 목이버섯 섭취군과 대조군 간에 T-score와 Z-score는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았지만, 목이버섯 섭취군의 혈청 총 콜레스테롤, LDL-콜레스테롤 및 중성지방 수준이 대조군에 비해 유의하게 소되었다.

        This study investigated the effects of the diet with Cucurbita moschata (CM), adlay seed (AS), and Cudrania tricuspidata leaf (CTL) mixed-powder on the visceral fat, fecal amount, and serum lipid profiles in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The mixed ratio of CM, AS, and CTL as a functional food ingredient was 1:1:1 on a weight basis. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet (D12492; 45 kcal fat) for 5 weeks during the first phase. In the second phase, which lasted 5 weeks, the rats were divided into six experimental groups. The groups were: a high-fat diet group as a control during the 10 weeks of experimental period; and a high-fat diet with 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30% mixed powder supplement group. The adipose tissue (RFP, EFP) weights were significantly decreased in the 20% and 30% mixed powder supplement groups than in the HFD group (p<0.05). The fecal weight produced by the 15%, 20%, and 30% mixed powder supplement groups was significantly increased during the second phase compared to the first phase (p<0.05). In terms of serum lipids, TG (triglyceride) content was decreased in the 10% and 15% mixed-powder supplement groups. The blood glucose levels were significantly decreased in all experimental diet supplement groups than in the HFD group (p<0.05). The findings show that the high supplement groups could improve the visceral fat accumulation, fecal amount, and blood glucose content compared to the HFD group.

        This research was planned and executed to evaluate how the composition of Yack-sun (oriental diet therapy) tea can effect the health conditions of people who are suffering from diet-related diseases such as being overweight, obese and hyperlipidemic, by taking Yack-sun tea in a form of nutritional supplement with daily meals. We produced Kangjieum with Lycense Mill., Polygonum multflorum Thunb, Cassia tora L., Crataegus pinnatifida Bge and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. We evaluated the effects of this tea on serum lipids, on homocysteine concentration, and on active oxygen contents, oxidative stress by clinical practices. We have determined that this tea has a significant effect on decreasing body fat content, decreasing total cholesterol, decreasing LDL-cholesterol, and decreses triglyceride and homocysteine concentrations. In addition, blood active oxygen content and oxidative stress were significantly decreased. We think that scientific and objective evaluation was performed on the components of Kangjieum prescription. We concluded that we could apply the components, not only in a form of tea, but also in other forms of various foods. The information we received from this conclusion will be basic information on how we can apply oriental medicinal resources into other food and will be a steppingstone for medicinal herbs to place a foot in the field of functional food research, which already draws sizable attention world-wide.

        This study was performed to investigate the effect of rice bran dietary fiber powder on serum lipid levels, bowel function, and mineral absorption in rats. Four weeks old male Sprague Dawley rats(SD rat) were divided into four groups : control group fed 5% cellulose as a fiber source, RB10 fed 5% of cellulose and 10% of rice bran dietary fiber powder, RB20 and RB30. The animals were fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. Serum lipid levels were not significantly different among the groups. But, fecal total cholesterol(TC), triglycerides(TG), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-c) excretion increased in the RB30 group. Fecal weight and fecal water content were higher in the rice bran added groups than those in the control group. Transit time was significantly shorter in the rice bran fiber-added groups than that in the control. Weight of the stomach and large intestine in the RB20 and RB30 groups were significantly greater than those in the other groups. Absorption rates of Ca, Mg, P, and Zn decreased significantly in the RB30 group compared to those in the other groups. A high amount of rice bran increased fecal lipids, including TC, TG and HDL-c. Rice bran increased fecal weight and fecal water content and shortened gastrointestinal transit time. However, a high level of rice bran diet decreased mineral absorption rates.

        This study was undertaken to find out the effect of cholesterol and serum albumin on sperm ability and lipid peroxidation levels period to the liquid storage of miniature pig sperm. Ejaculated semen from miniature pigs was collected by gloved-hand method into a pre-warmed () thermos bottle, and extended with Modena solution {with and without BSA, methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (-cholesterol) and cholesterol loaded cyclodextrin (+cholesterol)}. Each semen was assessed for viability (SYBR-14/PI staining) and acrosome intactness, intensity and capacitation status by chlorotetracycline (CTC) staining at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days of storage. At for the effects of cholesterol and serum albumin on lipid peroxidation, semen were incubated with (), and lipid peroxidation level were measured by flow cytometry using the lipid peroxidation reporter probe . The result, lipid peroxidation level in sperm added with cholesterol were lower in compared to the added sperm with serum albumin. Also, added cholesterol to sperm had significant (p<0.05) higher viability when storage for 7 and 10 days and lower when 10 days of storage percentage of acrosome-reacted sperm (AR pattern) in acrosome state as say result compared to other treated groups. In conclusion, role of cholesterol during lipid storage in miniature pig spermatozoa was protected boar spermatozoa from lipid peroxidation prior to lipid storage. Addition serum albumin during lipid storage in sperm may be induce sperm membrane damage by lipid peroxidation. Therefore, addition of cholesterol to miniature pig sperm will be lead to extension of liquid storage periods.

        This study was conducted to assess blood components caused by metabolic syndrome increasing in postmenopausal elderly women. The blood samples of these subjects were analyzed to investigate the correlation of plasma taurine levels and plasma homocysteine levels, and serum lipid profiles. The subjects were 33 elderly women(72.8±4.4 years). Their mean height, weight and BMI were 150.5±5.7㎝, 57.5±6.3㎏ and 25.4±2.5㎏/㎡. 16 women of this study subjects have been chronic diseases such as hypertension or diabetes. Their fasting blood glucose was 98.2±24.0㎎/㎗, and their plasma total cholesterol (TC), HDL-C, LDL-C, triglyceride(TG) were 216.5±29.9, 52.1±10.7, 145.7±27.9 and 141.2±59.6㎎/㎗, respectively. Their blood lipid profiles were higher than the standard levels of metabolic syndrome, thus these levels of lipid profiles may play a role as risk factors on the elderly person. Plasma taurine level of the subjects was 278.5±48.1 μMol/ℓ, and their plasma homocysteine level was 12.8±2.9 μMol/ℓ. The concentration of plasma vitamin B12 was significantly decreased by aging(p<0.05). The correlation of plasma homocysteine and plasma folate showed significantly negative(p<0.05). Thus, the decreased levels of plasma vitamin B12 and folate by aging might affect on the plasma homocyteine concentration acting as a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases for elderly person. The correlation of plasma taurine and hemoglobin, and their platelet showed significantly positive(p<0.05). In conclusion, the diet on the elderly person is one of the important factors to prevent their health from chronic diseases. This study recommends that well balanced diets are needed for elderly person to keep their health and prevent from metabolic syndrome.

        본 연구는 추출물 형태에 따른 파프리카 첨가 식이가 고콜레스테롤 식이 흰쥐의 혈청 지질과 α-tocopherol 농도에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해 Sprague-Dawley 수컷 25마리를 대조군(NC), 고콜레스테롤군(HC), 고콜레스테롤+동결 건조 파프리카 분말 섭취군(HC-FDP), 고콜레스테롤+파프리카 물 추출물 섭취군(HC-WEP), 고콜레스테롤+파프리카 에탄올 추출물 섭취군(HC-EEP)으로 나누어 실험 식이를 6주간 공급하였다. 6주 후 HC군과 파프리카 급여군에서 체중 증가는 각각 85.2%와 65.5~68.88%로 HC군에서 체중이 유의적으로 증가하였다. 그리고 내장지방 무게는 HC군보다 파프리카 급여군에서 감소하였으며, 파프리카 급여군의 중성지질, 총 콜레스테롤, LDL-콜레스테롤과 atherogenic index 역시 HC군보다 유의적으로 감소하였다(p<0.05). 그리고 파프리카 급여군들 중에서는 HC-EEP 군이 혈청지질 농도 감소 효과가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 혈청 α-tocopherol 농도는 HC-EEP에서 30.5±0.6μMol/ℓ로 가장 높았고, 그 다음으로는 HC-WEP(30.0±0.8μMol/ℓ)>HC-FDP(29.1±0.5μMol/ℓ)>HC(27.7±0.3μMol/ℓ)이었다. 이는 고콜레스테롤 식이에 의한 산화적 스트레스를 감소시키기 위하여 혈청 α-tocopherol이 소모되는 것을 파프리카 급여로 절약 하는 효과를 나타낸 것으로 사료된다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 파프리카는 혈중 지질 농도 저하 효과를 보였고, α-tocopherol 절약 작용을 통해 체내 항산화제로서 활용 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다.

        To elucidate the effects of an obesity control program on body composition and serum lipid levels, 31 obese elementary students (male: 25, female: 6) residing in the Gyeonggi area were evaluated and their body composition, serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG (triglyceride) were analyzed. The average age, height, weight and BMI (body mass index) were 11.52±1.00 yrs, 151.96±8.04 cm, 68.21±9.03 kg and 29.40±1.79 kg/m2 for the males, respectively, and 11.17±1.17 yrs, 147.83±5.15 cm, 65.05±10.86 kg and 29.62±3.24 kg/m2 for the females, respectively. There was a significant decrease in BMI for males (p〈0.001) and females (p〈0.05). There were also significant changes in all of the biochemical levels evaluated before and after the study. Specifically, the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG level decreased after the obesity control program, while the HDL-cholesterol level increased after the program. These results indicate that obesity control programs do change the BMI, serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG levels in obese elementary students. Thus, obesity control programs are urgently needed to prevent degenerative disease and decrease obesity among children in elementary school.

        In this study, we assessed the effects of dietary supplementation with Ecklonia cava on blood glucose, lipid metabolism, and renal oxidative stress in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a normal rat group fed on a control diet and diabetic rats fed on a control diet or supplemented with powder (15% w/w) or water extract of Ecklonia cava (2.5% w/w). Diabetes was induced by a single injection of STZ (60 mg/kg, ip) in citrate buffer. The animals were fed ad libitum with the experimental diet and water for 5 weeks. Dietary supplementation of Ecklonia cava powder and water extract was shown to reduce blood glucose levels in the diabetic rats, and the water extract was more effective than the powder. Dietary supplementation with Ecklonia cava also reduced LDL cholesterol and increased HDL-cholesterol levels in the diabetic rats. Renal glutathione S-transferase activity was increased in the diabetic rats as compared to the normal rats, but reverted to near control values as the result of dietary supplementation with Ecklonia cava. These results show that Eklonia cava exerts an anti-diabetic effect by improving blood glucose concentrations, LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratios, and antioxidative effects on the kidney in diabetic rats.
