        Phytic acid, making up 1-5% of the composition of many plant seeds and cereals, is known to form iron-chelates and inhibit lipid peroxidation. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as an indication of lipid peroxidation, were measured in beef round, chicken breast, pork loin, and halibut muscle after the meats were stored for 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 days at various temperatures [frozen (-20℃), refrigerator (4℃), and room temperature (25℃)]. Phytic acid effectively inhibited lipid peroxidation in beef round, chicken breast, halibut, and pork loin muscle (p$lt;0.05). The inhibitory effect of phytic acid was dependent on concentration, storage time, and temperature. At frozen temperature, the inhibitory effect of phytic acid was minimal, whereas at room temperature, the inhibitory effect of phytic acid was maximal, probably due to the variation of the control TBARS values. At the concentration of 10 mM, phytic acid completely inhibited lipid peroxidation in all the muscle foods by maintaining TBARS values close to the level of the controls, regardless of storage time or temperature (p$lt;0.05). The rate of lipid peroxidation was the highest in beef round muscle, although they had a close TBARS value at 0 day. Addition of phytic acid to lipid-containing foods such as meats, fish meal pastes, and canned seafoods may prevent lipid peroxidation, resulting in improvement of the sensory quality of many foods and prolonged shelf-life.

        Trunk holding test (Sorensen test) appear to have more value than strength test in prediction the occurrence of low back pain. Electromyographic activity of trunk extensor muscles during these test may provide clues to the etiology of neuromuscular-based low back pain. This study investigated the difference in back muscle endurance between healthy adult men and women using surface electromyographic (EMG) power spectral analysis. Thirty hea1thy subjects (15 men and 15 women) performed an unsupported trunk holding test for 60 seconds. Recording surface electrodes were placed over the erector spinae medially and laterally at vertebral levels of and . Slope of total frequency was evaluated using the MP100WSW Fast Fourier Transform spectrum analysis program. The slopes of all indices of back muscle fatigue, except right , were significantly steeper in men than in women (p<0.05). Our results indicated that the trunk holding test using EMG power spectral analysis of erector spinae muscles is useful for the evaluation of fatigue rate of these muscles. Our results also showed a higher muscle endurance in healthy adult women than in men.

        On contraction of the muscles, marked changes in X-ray reflections are observed, suggesting that conformational changes of contractile molecules and the movement of myosin heads during muscle contraction. The time needed to the peak tension after the onset of stimulation and the amount of peak tension depend on the number of twitch cycle. It was found that the successive twitches decreased not only the time needed to the peak tension after the onset of stimulation but also the time needed to the maximum change of the X-ray intensity. However, the difference of the time between the peak tension and the maximum intensity change(Ti-Ii) is nearly the same at any twitch. Based on these results the causes of the decrease of Ti and Ii, and physiological implication of Ti-Ii are discussed.

        The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) on delayed onset muscle soreness(DOMS). Twenty males performed eccentric exercise of the elbow flexor. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) a group (=7) that received low frequency TENS (7 Hz), 2) a group (=7) that received high frequency TENS (500 Hz), 3) a control group (=6) that received no treatment. DOMS was induced in a standardised fashion in the non-dominant elbow flexor of all subjects by repeated eccentric exercise. Treatments were applied immediately following exercise and again at 24 hours and at 48 hours after. Subjects attended on three consecutive days for treatment and measurement of elbow flexion, extension and resting angle(universal goniometer), and pain(Visual Analogue Scale; VAS) on a daily basis. Measurements were taken after treatment. Analysis of results using repeated measures analysis of variance(ANOVA) and post hoc tests were as follows: 1) there were between groups differences in pain value at 48 hours after (p<0.05), 2) one-way ANOVA with repeated measurement for pain, resting angle, flexion angle and extension angle revealed significant differences within low frequency TENS group, 3) one-way ANOVA with repeated measurement for flexion angle revealed significant difference within high frequency TENS group.

        Back muscles play an important role in protecting the spine. Epidemiological studies have shown that loads imposed on the human spine during daily living play a significant role in the onset of low back pain. No previous study has attempted to correlate the response of the trunk musculature with the type of external load. The purpose of this study was to use surface electromyography (EMG) to quantify the relative demands placed on the back muscles while lifting loads in one hand. Forty asymptomatic, twenty year-old subjects stood while lifting loads of 10% of body weight(BW) unilaterally. All EMG data were normalized to a percentage of the EMG voltage produced during no-load standing(%EMG). Our major analysis involved a paired t-test for repeated measures. Of particular note was the fact that the ipsilateral 10% of BW condition produced statistically less % EMG change than did the contralateral 10% of the condition.

        동면어류인 미꾸라지를 일정시기(산란기전:5월, 산란기후:8월, 동면직전:11월, 동면직후:3월) 별로 채취한 다음 자·웅별 전육질부를 시료로 취하여 지방질과 중성 및 인지질 조성을 분석, 검토하였다. 중성지질이 구성지질의 대부분은 이루었고 다음은 인지질, 당지질순이었으며 그 조성과 변화 pattern이 자·웅이 거의 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. 3월 이후 중성지질의 조성비가 점차 많아져 8월에는 90% 가까이 증가하였고 이후 점차 감소하여 이듬해 3월에는 60% 이하로 떨어졌으나 당·인지질은 역으로 3월이 가장 많았다. 중성지질과 인지질 중에는 각각 triglyceride와 phosphatidyl choline 조성이 가장 많았으며 그 함량은 8월에 최고치를, 3월에 최소치를 나타내었다. 중성지질의 주요지방산은 16:0, 16:1, 18:1, 18:2 18:3(ω3) 등으로 이 중 16:1 조성은 인지질보다 월등히 많았고 20:4(ω6), 20:5(ω3), 22:6(ω3) 등 고도 polyene산은 훨씬 적게 분포되었다. 중성지질의 지방산중 16:0 조성은 연중 거의 변화가 없었으나 16:1, 18:1, 18:2, 18:3(ω3)은 3월보다 5월이 2∼4% 정도 높았고 고도 polyene산 조성은 그만큼 적었다. 이중 16:1 조성은 5월 이후 계속 줄어든 반면, 18:1, 18:2 조성은 11월까지 거의 비슷하였다. 또, 8월에는 18:0, 14:1, 17:1 조성의 증가로 포화 및 monoene산 조성이 다소 높아지고 고도 polyene산 조성은 더욱 줄어들어 불포화도가 최소치를 나타내었다. 11월부터는 그 반대로 포화 및 monoene산 조성이 점차 줄어들어 동면 직후인 3월에는 18:0, 16:1, 18:1, 등 대부분의 포화산과 monoene산 및 18:2 조성이 더 큰 폭으로 떨어졌고 20:1, 20:4(ω6), 20:5(ω3), 22:6(ω3) 조성비는 그 만큼 더 높아지는 경향이었다. 인지질은 16:0, 16:1, 18:1, 18:2, 20:4(ω6), 20:5(ω3)이 주요 지방산이었고 3월과 5월 사이에 포화산과 monoene산 조성은 거의 차이가 없었으나 polyene산 조성은 중성지질과 비슷하게 변하였다. 8월에는 16:0, 18:0등 주로 포화산 조성이 높아지고 고도 polyenene산조성은 그만큼 줄었으나 11월부터는 16:0, 18:0과 18:1, 18:2, 18:3(ω3)조성이 다시 줄고 대부분의 고도 polyene산 조성은 점차 많아져 이듬해 3월에는 중성지질과 마찬가지로 불포화도가 더 큰 폭으로 커지고 특히 18:2, 18:3(ω3)와 20:4(ω6)와 22:6(ω3)의 변화가 두드러졌다.

        This paper reviews physiological changes in the nervous system of patients with hemiparesis that may contribute to muscle weakness. The discussion includes the important role that alterations in the physiology of motor units, notably changes in firing rates and muscle fiber atrophy, play in the manifestation of muscle weakeness. This role is compared with the lesser role that spasticity of the antagonist muscle group appears to play in determining the weakness of agonist muscles. The contribution of other factors that result in mechanical restraint of the agonist by the antagonist is discussed relative to muscle weakness in patients with hemiparesis. More studies on patients with hemiparesis are required to assess what role muscle strength training should play in rehabiliting patients after a stroke.

        The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of one proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation technique and static stretching on calf muscle tightness. The subjects consist of 9 hemiplegics, and 9 quadriplegics. The eighteen subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups: prorioceptive neuromuscular facilitation(6 persons), static stretching(6 persons) and control(6 persons). Contract relax antagonist contract and static stretching techniques were applied continuously for twenty minutes each. Of the many proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques, only the contract relax antagonist contract technique was applied. The static stretching technique was applied with the subject placed in standing on a seventy degree inclined tilt table for twenty minutes. A wedge was placed under the feet to obtain maximum dorsiflexion. Wedge thickness varied with each subject. Results revealed: (1) a significant difference between the experimental and the control groups(p<0.05). (2) a significant difference between contract relax antagonist contract and static stretching groups(p<0.05). (3) At day five, the final increments were: contract relax antagonist contract , static stretching (meanstandard deviation).

        단백질 가수분해물의 항산화 작용을 해명하기 위하여 고등어 근육단백질을 이용하여 복합효소, alcalase, bromelain, pancrease, pepsin, α-chymotrypsin, trypsin 및 papain으로 가수분해시키고 linoleic acid와의 모델반응을 통하여 이들 가수분해물의 항산화능과 α-tocopherol과의 상승작용 및 아미노산 조성, Bio-gel P-2 column에 의한 활성획분의 분리 및 획분별 항산호능과 금속이온 봉쇄작용 등을 살펴본 결과, 8가지 효소에 의한 고등어 근육단백질 가수분해물의 항산화능은 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 특히 복합효소, bromelain 및 alcalase에 의한 가수분해물의 항산화능이 다른 효소에 의한 경우에 비하여 다소 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 이들의 α-tocopherol과의 상승작용 및 금속이온(Fe^3+, Cu^2+)에 의한 산화촉진 억제효과 또한 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 아미노산의 조성은 전반적으로 aspartic acid, glutamic acid 및 lysine의 함량이 높은 것으로 나타났다. Bio-gel P-2 column에 의한 활성획분의 분리 결과, 복합효소 유래 가수분해물의 경우는 part E. bromelain 유래 가수분해물의 경우는 part e에서 항산화능이 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 이들의 분자량은 1, 400보다 적을 것으로 추정되었다. 또한 획분별 금속이온 봉쇄작용은 항산화 획분인 part E에서 큰 것으로 나타났으며 획분별 항산화능과 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이들 활성획분의 아미노산 조성은 part E의 경우는 histidine, arginine, phenylalanine 및 lysine이, part e의 경우는 lysine, glutamic acid 및 leucine의 함량이 높은 것으로 나타났다.

        This study was designed to investigate age-related changes in body composition and cell mediated immunity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed stock diet ad libitum and 12 rats were sacrified at 1, 4, 6, 12 months of age. Body weight increased sharply from 1 to 4 months, and increased steadily thereafter. The weights of liver, epididymal fat pads, and kidney increased in similar pattern as body weight, but their relative ratio to body weight decreased with age. The ratio of epididymal fat pads to body weight increased with age. The weight of extensor digitorium longus, soleus and plantaris increased from 1 to 4 months, but it decreased at 6, 12 months. The protein content of muscles decreased or increased throughout 12 months. The T cell proliferation response to Con A stimulation was significantly lower at 6 months than 1 momth and lower at 12 months than 6 months.

        목적: 본 연구의 목적은 의식적인 체간 근육의 동시 활성화(co-activation) 조건과 1RM(repetition max)의 50%, 65%, 80%의 부하 수준에서 바벨 백 스쿼트(barbell back squat)를 수행하였을 때, 척추 분절의 자유도의 변화 양상을 관찰하는 것이다. 방법: 이를 위하여 본인 체중의 1.8∼2배 이상으로 바벨 백 스쿼트를 수행할 수 있는 4명의 연구 참여자들에게 실험 조건에 따른 운동학적 자료를 수집한 뒤 주성분 분석(principal component analysis)을 사용하여 척추의 자유도를 정량화하였다. 결과: 전체 분산의 95% 이상을 설명할 수 있는 주성분의 개수(5개)를 기준으로 백 스쿼트의 하강 구간에서 의식적인 활성에 따라 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였으며 상승 구간에서는 부하 조건에 따라 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 결론: 백 스쿼트의 하강 구간 동안 의식적인 체간 근육의 동시 활성화에 의해 척추 분절의 자유도가 제한될 수 있으며 상승 구간에서는 부하 수준에 따라 차이가 발생할 수 있다.

        Focal myositis is a rare disease associated with inflammatory changes invading the skeletal muscles and may be triggered by nerve lesion. We describe a case of 33-year-old woman who was diagnosed focal denervation myositis of piriformis and gluteal muscles associated with sciatic neuropathy because of severe uterine enlargement due to twin pregnancy misdiagnosed as lumbar herniated nucleus pulposus. MRI is one of the key diagnostic tools in the assessment of focal denervation myositis for differential diagnosis. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used for treatment of focal myositis. Spontaneous regression is obtained in numerous cases.
