        The 'Misomi' is a rice variety derived from a cross between ‘Sobi’ which has adaptability of low fertilizer cultivation and SR21110 (Ilpum/Jinbu19) by the rice breeding team at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2013. The heading date of ‘Misomi’ is August 14 and six days later than check variety, ‘Hwaseong’. It has 83 cm of culm length and 121 spikelets per panicle. It showed weaker cold tolerance than that of ‘Hwaseong’ during exposed to cold stress. ‘Misomi’ showed resistance to blast disease, K1, K2 and K3 race of bacterial blight and stripe virus, but susceptibility to K3a race, other viruses and planthoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibits translucent, clear non-glutinous endosperm and short grain shape. It has low protein content (6.2%) and similar amylose content (19.4%) to that of ‘Hwaseong’. ‘Misomi’ showed better palatability index of cooked rice than that of ‘Hwaseong’. Particulary, ‘Misomi’ showed excellent processing adaptability than ‘Chucheong’ and ‘Hwaseong’ on palatability index of cold and aseptic cooked rice. Its milled rice recovery rate is similar to those of ‘Hwaseong’. However, whole grain rate of milled rice is higher than that of ‘Hwaseong’. 'Misomi' has 5.68 MT/ha of milled rice productivity in ordinary cultivation, which was 12% higher than that of ‘Hwaseong’. 'Misomi' could be adaptable to the middle plain area and Midwest coast area in Korea (Grant No. 5635).

        This study was investigated to find the effects of sowing time on growth and yields of cowpea grown in a southern region of South Korea. Experiments were carried out in Naju, Jeonnam Province (Latitude 35° 04' N, Longitude 126° 54' E) during 2013 and 2014. The intermediate-erect type strains used in this study were Jeonnam1 and Jeonnam2 (Okdang). Sowing time was performed between middle-April and middle-August at intervals of one month. The days from sowing to emergence was significantly higher in the middle-April sowing (12 days) time but there was no significant differences other sowing dates (5 to 3 days). The days from sowing to first flowering were shorter for sowing dates between middle-April and middle-July because sowing time was delayed and then were lengthened again at middle-August sowing; the days were longest at middle-April sowing (around 62 days) and were shortest at middle-July sowing (35 days). The days from first flowering to harvesting were short for the sowing dates between middle-April and middle-July (17 to 15 days) but were relatively long for middle-August sowing date (24 days). Stem length was relatively long for the middle-May and middle-June sowing dates. Peduncle length was relatively long for the middle-April sowing date. Main-stem node number was highest for the middle-July sowing. Branch number per plant was highest in the middle-April sowing. Seed yields were highest for the middle-April sown Jeonnam1 and the Jeonnam2 (Okdang) strains showing, 199 and 211 kg/10a, respectively, and then followed by sowing in middle-July, 191 and 195 kg/10a, respectively.

        In this study, agronomic characteristics and fatty acid composition of 121 flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) germplasms were analyzed. The flax germplasms had a fairly short growth period of 75-95 days. The plant height at maturity varied from 52 to 124 cm. The flower color varied from white to lilac and even purple. Early flowering flax germplasms had white flowers and were resistant to lodging. In early flowering flax germplasms, all agronomic characteristics, including growth period, plant height, branch number per plant, stem diameter, number of capsules per raceme, seed number per capsule, 1000-seed weight, and seed yield, were decreased. The average fatty acid composition of 121 flax germplasms comprised palmitic acid (5.3%), stearic acid (4.3%), oleic acid (29.7%), linoleic acid (13.1%) and linolenic acid (46.4%). The total content of unsaturated fatty acids ranged from 84~94% with an average of 88%. Among the fatty acids, linolenic acid (omega-3) content was the highest with a range of 36~54%. In five selected flax germplasms (Hollandia 1803, Red son, C & F Res Br 1767, Wiera, and Ireland 1657) with high linolenic acid (≥51%), total lipid and protein contents were 30~36% and 5.4~6.9%, respectively. Overall, flax can practically be adoptable into cropping systems in South Korea and utilized as a scenery crop, since flax has a short cultivation period with diverse flower colors.

        Background : Curcuma longa L., in the family Zingiberaceae, is distributed in tropical and/or sub-tropical regions mainly in India and China. This species is commonly called turmeric, powder is used as medicinal herbs and/or flavor enhancer. It has been cultivated in southern region mainly Jindo. However, it might be possible to extend cultivation regions due to rise in average temperature. In order to select superior lines based on agronomic characteristics, we analyzed multivariate and estimated selection effects from C. longa germplasm. Methods and Results : The C. longa germplasm were cultivated in an experimental field located in Eumseong, NIHHS, RDA. The harvested roots were investigated in agronomic characteristics included in yield and then considered its relationship among the 9 germplasm by multivariate analysis method. Results from principal component analysis (PCoA) showed that it represented 70.00% and 80.44% accumulated explanation from four and five principal compounds (PC). PCoA was conducted from 9 agronomic characteristics and then correlation coefficient has been showed by analysis between each main component value and agronomic characteristics. Value of the first PC was 2.25, 24.96% explanation of total dispersion, plant height, number of rootlet and weight of rootlet were correlated with a somewhat higher level as 0.41, 0.43 and 0.52. Value of the fifth PC was 0.94, 10.43% explanation of total dispersion, the number of shoots was correlated with a higher level as 0.87. Selection effects with outstanding candidate lines including higher lines were estimated at 126.13% in yield. Conclusion : These data on multivariate based on agronomic characteristics will be give us invaluable breeding information by selection of superior lines.

        Developing rice lines with various amylose contents is necessary to diverse usages of rice in terms of raw materials for processed food production, and thereby to promote rice consumption in Korea. A rice mutant line, ‘Namil(SA)-dull1’ was established through sodium azide mutagenesis on ‘Namil’, a non-glutinous Korean Japonica rice cultivar. Namil(SA)-dull1’ had dull endosperm characteristics and the evaluated amylose content was 12.2%. A total of 94 F2 progenies from a cross between ‘Namil(SA)-dull1’ and ‘Milyang23’, a non-glutinous Tongil-type rice cultivar, was used for genetic studies on the endosperm amylose content. Association analyses, between marker genotypes of 53 SSR anchor markers and evaluated amylose contents of each 94 F2:3 seeds, initially localized rice chromosome 6 as the harboring place for the modified allele(s) directing low amylose content of ‘Namil(SA)-dull1’. By increasing SSR marker density on the putative chromosomal region followed by association analyses, the target region was narrowed down 0.94 Mbp segment, expanding from 28.95 Mbp to 29.89 Mbp, on rice chromosome 6 pseudomolecule. Among the SSR loci, RM7555 explained 84.2% of total variation of amylose contents in the F2 population. Further physical mapping on the target region directing low amylose content of ‘Namil(SA)-dull1’ would increase the breeding efficiency in developing promising rice cultivars with various endosperm characteristics.

        Garlic (Allium sativum L.) has been used as both food and medicine in many cultures for thousands of years. Garlic cultivars are completely sterile and propagated through vegetative method. Collection of a large number of fertile accessions of these genus is needed to explore genetic variability. In order to investigate genetic variation among Allium species and its possibilities for direct cultivation in Korea, we characterized 12 accessions of A. longicuspis, flowering wild garlic which had collected from Central Asia, the main center of garlic diversity. Most of A. longicuspis accessions showed higher over-wintering and bolting rate, longer scape length and more number of bulbils than Korean landraces cultivar, Danyang and Euiseong, but A. longicuspis accessions exhibited smaller size of bulbs and bulbils. Most accessions of A. longicuspis had more number of cloves per bulb, except K229596 and K248824 than Korean landraces. All the accessions of A. longicuspis from Central Asia had complete bolters having many flowers and topsets in umbel. Further studies of A. longicuspis should focus on securing true seeds through removal of topsets and crosses among accessions to create the genetic variability.

        국내 밀의 수량 증진을 위해 이삭 길이가 길고 1수립수가 많은 장수형 164계통(F8)을 육성하였고, 본 연구에서는 이들 계통의 주요 농업형질과 이들 특성과 관련 있는 표지인자에 대한 평가를 수행하였다. 장수형 계통은 모본인 금강밀과 비교했을 때, 단위면적당 수수와 리터중은 적고, 파종 후 출수까지 일수가 길었고, 간장, 수장, 1수립수와 단위면적당 생산량은 높게 나타났다. 농업 특성 관련 표지인자를 평가한 결과, 장수형 계통은 Rht-B1, Rht-D1, Vrn-B1, Ppd-A1, Ppd-B1 유전자 좌에서는 같은 유전자를 지닌 것으로 나타났다. 장수형 계통 중 Vrn-D1를 지닌 계통은 Vrn-D1a를 지닌 계통에 비하여 출수에 걸리는 시간이 길었지만, 이삭길이와 1수립수가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 Vrn-B1 유전자 변이는 장수형 계통의 농업형질의 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 장수형은 Ppd-D1유전자 변이에 따른 간장이나 이삭 길이는 차이가 없었지만, 출수 일수와 수수는 Ppd-D1b를 지닌 계통이 많았지만, 1수립수, 천립중, 리터중과 수량은 Ppd-D1a를 지닌 계통이 높았다. 종실 특성을 나타내는 표지인자 변이는 출수 일수, 간장, 수장, 분얼이나 1수립수 및 수량에는 영향을 주지 않았지만 TaSus2-2B유전자의 Hap-L타입, TaGW2유전자의 Hap-6A-G타입과 TaCwi-A1a 가 각각의 대립 유전자형보다 천립중이 높게 나타났다. 향후 재배환경이 장수형의 농업형질 및 품질에 미치는 영향에 대한 평가가 필요하고, 만숙과 분얼이 적은 장수형의 단점을 보완하기 위한 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.

        Wheat is a major food source for a large proportion of the worldwide population. Wheat production is hampered by drought, cold and various diseases. Wheat germplasms contain various characteristics such as high yield, low plant height, resistance to diverse diseases and good seed quality. In this study, we evaluated agronomic traits of wheat germplasms collected from the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) for application of the breeding program. Total 221 wheat lines contain cultivars and landraces were provided by NPGS and USDA-ARS. The germplasms were evaluated quantitative and qualitative agronomic properties in Korea university research farm. The agronomic traits of the germplasms in each region were analysed using statistical analysis. The most of germplasms were geographically originated from America continent. The germplasms average heading date showed on May 10. The average heading date of Africa germplasms was 6 days earlier than Europe germplasms. The germplasms average plant height and spike length showed 81.7 cm and 8.6 cm, respectively. The germplasms of Europe showed 21.7 cm taller than average plant height of America continent and the germplasms of Africa showed the smallest plant height comparing with other continents. The germplasms of Asia showed taller spikere length than that of other continents. Seed color in germplasm comprises white, red and purple seed color, 24%, 75%, 1%, respectively. In addition, about 39% of the germplasms indicated lodging resistant. These results could be useful for improvement of wheat breeding program.

        Soybean is a crop of importance economically and nutritionally in many parts of the world. Thanks to many new genes brought from genomic research, It is possible to introduce various candidate genes through genetic transformation to see the performance of the genes in field. In our lab, soybean transformations have been tried for last 10 years to probe the possibility of traits improvement by transformation of new gene into soybean. For this purpose, three different genes were transformed into Korean soybean variety, Kwangan. First, the gene that controls early flowering of plant was transformed into Kwangan. Second, a candidate gene for soybean mosaic virus (SMV) resistance was transformed to produce transgenic plants. Third, another candidate gene for drought tolerance was transformed. All the transgenic plants from three genes transformation were produced for their gene insertion and their expression using PCR, qRT-PCR. Further analysis including harvesting seeds is currently undertaken.

        Understanding how crops interact with their environments is increasingly important in breeding program, especially in light of highly anticipated climate changes. A total of 150 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of F12 generation derived from Dasanbyeo (Indica) x TR22183 (Japonica) were evaluated at Suwon 2010, Shanghai 2010, IRRI 2010 wet season, Suwon 2011, Shanghai 2011, IRRI 2011 dry season, and IRRI 2011 wet season as a total of seven diverse environments. Traits evaluation included eight important agronomical traits such as days to heading (DTH), culm length (CL), panicle length (PL), panicle number per plant (PN), spikelet number per panicle (SN), spikelet fertility (SF), 100-grain weight (GW), and grain yield (GY). As a result of genotyping using 384-plex GoldenGate oligo pool assay (OPA) set (RiceOPA3.1), the linkage map for 235 SNP markers covering a total of 926.53 cM with an average interval of 4.01 cM was constructed and a total of 44 main-effect quantitative trait loci (QTL)s and 35 QTLs by environment interaction (QEI) were detected for all eight traits using single environment and multi-environments analysis, respectively. Of these, fourteen putative QTLs for DTH, CL, PN, SN, GW and GY found in single environment analysis had the similar position to QEI for those traits, suggesting that these same QTLs from both single-and multi-environments are major and stable for certain traits. To the best of our knowledge, 12 QTLs consisted of four QTLs for CL (qCL2, qCL8.1, qCL8.2, and qCL8.3), six QTLs for GW (qGW3.1, qGW3.2, qGW7, qGW8, qGW10.1, and qGW10.2), one QTL for GY (qGY3) and one for SF (qSF4) out of 44 QTLs obtained from single environment analysis were considered to be novel since no overlapping QTL was reported from previous studies. In addition, 12 out of 35 QTLs obtained from multi-environments analysis were also novel.

        본 연구는 하우스에서 반유한 직립형 동부 계통의 파종기 이동이 생태반응과 생육 및 수량성에 미치는 영향을 구명하 고자 전남 나주(위도 35° 04'N, 경도 126° 54'E)에서 2012 년과 2013년에 수행하였다. 시험계통으로 전남1호와 전남2 호를 이용하여 3월 중순부터 8월 중순까지 1개월 간격으로 6회 파종하였다. 1. 출현일수는 3월 중순 파종에서 12일로 길었고, 기타 파종기에서는 4~3일 이었다. 2. 개화일수는 3월 중순부터 7월 중순까지는 파종기가 지연됨에 따라 짧아지다 8월 중순 파종에서 길어졌다. 즉, 3월 중순 파종에서 75일 내외로 가장 길었고, 7월 중순 파종에서 30일로 가장 짧았다. 3. 개화시에서 수확기까지의 소요일수는 3월 중순부터 5 월 중순 파종에서 28~24일로 짧았으나, 이후 파종에서 는 38~35일로 긴 편이었다. 4. 경장과 화경장은 4월 중순과 8월 중순 파종에서 긴 편 이었고, 주경절수는 6월 중순 파종, 분지수는 3월 중순 파종에서 많았다. 5. 3월 중순 파종에서는 주당 꼬투리수가 많고 립중이 무 거워, 전남1호와 전남2호의 10a당 수량이 각각 340, 367kg로 가장 많았으며, 이후 파종이 지연됨에 따라 대체로 수량이 감소하는 경향이었다.

        Since green revolution in 1970s, representing by the ‘Tongil type’ rice cultivars, rice breeding has greatly contributed to the Korean society in terms of self-sufficiency in staple food-grains and development of agricultural industry. During last three decades, conventional rice breeding has successfully enhanced rice commercial value in Korea through developing elite cultivars related with high quality, resistant or tolerant against biotic or abiotic stresses, special-purpose, direct seedling, super yielding, and functional rice. In the meantime, breeding technologies has been also improved by adopting and putting to practical use of theories and technologies of plant science such as mutation breeding, cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility, anther culture mediated haploid breeding, marker assisted selection, and transformation. Rice breeding, meanwhile, is an endless procedure of creating desirable haplotype expressing improved performances of agronomic traits. Narrow genetic diversity of Korean commercial rice lines have been a major limit factor not only in developing breeding lines having resistance and tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses, but also in expanding genetic availability in terms of widening end-use properties. Although introducing novel allele types might be possible via crosses with wild relatives, it demands additional tedious efforts to restore the unique genetic background of the recurrent parents, which determine commercial value in the market. Moreover, due to most conventional breeding programs are prone to depend on phenotypic selections, addressing the driving force to be a superior haplotype would be very difficult in terms of tagging the chromosomal location of the target loci and estimating their genetic effects. Recently, coupling with the decrease of domestic rice consumption, Korean rice industry has being threatened by rapid changes in environmental, social, and even international circumstances, for example climate change, aging population, and opening of the rice market. To maintain the rice industry as a stable and sustainable growth engine of Korean economy, it is strongly demanded to develop practical strategies encompassing wide variety of available resources including germplasm, bioscience, and manpower. As the role of R&D party, technology convergence followed by communication among stakeholders of rice research would be essential. To the context, based on the hypothesis of the future of Korean rice industry, major schemes related with the issues of 1) High Quality, 2) Cost Reduction, 3) Stable Production, and 4) Consumption Boost would be discussed along with the projections over the achievements and shortcomings of Korean rice cultivars in terms of agronomic traits.

        Wheat is one of the most important food crops in the world and provides 20% of nutritional requirement to the consumers in developing countries. The consumption per capita of wheat is persistent but the self-sufficiency has decreased owing to the less competitive world market and double cropping system with rice in Korea. This study was conducted to obtain baseline data on the selection lines with early maturity and good agronomic traits. Geumgangmil, a leading Korean variety, was crossed with CIMMYT’s line, and a DH (double haploid) line was released using pollens of Maize in Mexico. The 71 inbred lines were grown in fields at NICS, Miryang. The culm length of inbred lines were normally distributed from 37cm to 106cm, though that of the P1 (Geumgangmil) was 71 and P2 (CIMMYT’s Line) was 77cm. Especially, some lines were very short and measured below 50cm. The spike lengths of most of the lines were longer than that of P1 (7.5cm), but were normally distributed. The number of spikelet was less than that in P2 (19ea.), but was more than P1(10ea.). The heading day of most of the lines was between P1 (11th April) and P2 (25th April) and the maturity day of the lines was similar to P1 (1st June) but 5 lines showed 2~6 days shorter maturity period than that of P1. However, 20 lines were found to have 2~10 days longer maturity period than that of P2.

        Stem rust of wheat caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. Tritici is historically one of the most important diseases of crops worldwide. The objective of this study was to screen the growth habits and yield of wheat accessions in Korea winter condition. We collected ninety stem rust resistant germplasms from USDA-Grain and planted for the characteristics of growth and yield in 2013. We measured the growth characteristics such as the plant type, leaf color, heading date, stem length, spike length, awn length, number of spikelet, number of tiller, and 1,000 kernel weight (g). Early maturity is most important wheat breeding target in double cropping system such as Korea. Heading dates of ninety cultivars ranged from May 17 to June 7. The Keumkang control cultivar headed on May 23. Heading dates of seventeen accessions had as early as Keumkang control (May 23). The numbers of semi-erect and intermediate type for growth habit were 45 and 33 respectively. The 1000 kernel weights were also measured. Mean 1000 kernel weights ranged from 16.7g (Webster) to 41.8g (123 A1C2). The average of stem length was 100.2cm and Keumkang was 58.4cm. These results showed that A4849-60P-7P-1P (Chile), MG 31492 (Ethiopia), 1338.F.6.C.3.B (Kenya), 1203 A1C2 (Kenya), and II-90-20/3-1R-1M- 3R (Mexico) were best lines for agronomic characteristic such as early heading date and grain yield

        Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple foods that feed more than 50% of the world’s population. With the improving of people’s living standard, eating quality of rice become the most important aims in current breeding programs. Amylose content (AC) and gelatinization temperature (GT) are the two main measures to estimate the rice grain quality. In rice, a total of 27 genes directly involved the rice starch biosynthesis effecting on the rice eating quality. It clearly identified chromosome 6 to be rich in the genes related to AC and GT properties (GBSS I, SSIIa and SBE I) along with other genomic regions scattered in rice genome. Rice blast, caused by the fungal pathogen M. oryzae, is the most devastating disease of rice and severely affects crop stability and sustainability worldwide. Many fungal genes involved in pathogenicity and rice genes involved in effector recognition and defense responses have been identified over the past decade. A total of 99 and 22 blast resistance genes have been identified and cloned; in which 45% were found in japonica cultivars, 51% in indica cultivars, and the rest 4% in wild rice species. Among them, three major resistance gene clusters have been characeterized: the Pik locus on Chromosome 11, and the Pita locus on Chromosome 12, the Piz locus on Chromosome 6 closely to the starch synthesis-related genes. These results could be important clues for studying the relationship between resistance / susceptible materials and eating quality.
