Although Korean veterinary technicians (VTs) received legal recognition through the national licensing examination introduced in 2021, empirical research on their salary levels and determinants has been lacking. This study surveyed 115 veterinarians (hospital directors) in two phases—Phase 1 (May 2025, Chungnam region, N=46) and Phase 2 (September 2025, nationwide, N=69)—to analyze the effects of certification status, career stage, region, and hospital size on VT salaries. Three key findings emerged. First, certified VTs earned significantly more than non-certified counterparts across all career stages (+1.67 to +2.40 million KRW/year; paired t-test, p<0.001; Cohen's d=0.705-0.744; Cohen, 1988), with the premium expanding with career stage (+43.7%). Second, salary increased significantly with career stage (F=33.595, p<0.001, η²=0.209), but the total increase (22.7%) was far narrower than in the US (64.2%), UK (38.8%), and Japan (58.5%). Third, regional salary differences were not statistically significant (F=0.35-0.49, p=0.62-0.71), confirmed after controlling for sampling bias (F=0.094, p=0.963). An integrated multiple regression model (N=520, R²=0.247) identified certification status (β=+203 ten-thousand KRW) and career length (β=+70 ten-thousand KRW/year) as significant predictors; however, 75.3% of variance remained unexplained, consistent with dual labor market theory. The employer-reported all-career average salary of 25.95 million KRW represents 53.1% of Korean nurses (48.85 million KRW) and 42.4% of US VTs (61.15 million KRW). Institutional improvements—including certification-based employment incentives, standardized salary guidelines, and clarified scope of practice—are urgently required.

This study investigated gentamicin (GEN) residues in edible tissues of broiler chickens following intramuscular injection and established the withdrawal time (WT) of GEN in poultry edible tissues. Thirty healthy broiler chickens were intramuscularaly injected with GEN at doses of 2.0 mg/kg body weight (BW) once. After drug administration, tissue samples were collected from six broiler chickens at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 42 days post-treatment. GEN residue concentrations in poultry edible tissues were determined using LC-MS/MS. The correlation coefficient values ranged from 0.9976 to 0.9998, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.003-0.008 mg/kg and 0.01-0.025 mg/kg, respectively. Recoveries in muscle, liver, kidney, and fat tissues were 50.39-74.57%, 50.35-66.24%, 65.57-74.23% and 81.62-111.31%, respectively, with coefficients of variation less than 14.17%. In broiler chickens intramuscularally injected with GEN, GEN concentrations in muscle, injection site, liver, and fat samples were below the LOQ on day 14, 21, 42, and 14 post-treatment, respectively. However, GEN was detected in kidney samples at levels above the LOQ up to day 42 after drug treatment. According to the European Medicines Agency’s guideline on the determination of withdrawal periods for edible tissues, the withdrawal period for GEN in liver and kidney samples were established as 38 and 39 days, respectively. In conclusion, the developed analytical method is suitable for detecting GEN in poultry tissues, and the estimated WT of GEN will contribute to ensuring the safety of poultry products.

This study evaluated the bactericidal efficacy of a Bacillus complex composed of Bacillus subtilis YBK-70, Bacillus atrophaeus YBK-W4, and Bacillus circulans YBK-04 (1:1:1, v/v/v) against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App). A bactericidal efficacy test using the broth dilution method was performed to determine the lowest effective dilution of the Bacillus complex culture medium (BCCM) (4 × 10⁶ colony-forming units/mL) after exposure to the test bacteria for 30 min at 4°C. The BCCM and test bacteria were diluted in suspensions containing low and high levels of organic matter (OM), depending on the treatment conditions. Under low OM conditions, the bactericidal activity of the BCCM against App was observed at all 5.0-fold dilutions. Under high OM conditions, the bactericidal activity of the BCCM against App was observed at all 1.25-fold dilutions. The recommended dilution ratios of the BCCM under low and high OM conditions were 4.0-fold and 1.0-fold, respectively. As the BCCM exhibits bactericidal efficacy against App, it may serve as an effective agent for limiting the spread of bacterial diseases in animals.

Q fever, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, has emerged as an increasingly important zoonotic disease in the Republic of Korea since the first human cases were documented in the early 1990s. This review synthesizes domestic studies on C. burnetii epidemiology and serological surveillance in Korean cattle and goats over the past three decades. Bovine surveys document widespread but heterogeneous exposure, with seroprevalence ranging from 1.7% in indoor-housed Korean native cattle to 25.6% in dairy cattle, while caprine surveys reveal substantially higher prevalence reaching 22.7% in Korean native goats. Bulk tank milk testing in major dairy provinces identifies herd-level prevalence of 17.8%, and the predominant genomic groups (Group IV, 66.7%) are associated with chronic Q fever. Grazing emerges as the strongest documented husbandry risk factor (odds ratio 32.6), and occupational seroreactivity reaches 7-16% across dairy farmers, slaughterhouse workers, and veterinary service laboratory personnel. Molecular typing by multispacer sequence typing and multiple locus variable number tandem repeat analysis confirms that Korean strains share genotypes with isolates from human cases in France, Poland, and the United Kingdom, demonstrating zoonotic competence and international circulation. Recent spatial analysis demonstrates a strengthening geographic correlation between human Q fever incidence and goat density (odds ratio 1.87 in 2015-2019 rising to 2.33 in 2020-2024), with no significant cattle association. The current surveillance framework, while reinforced by the 2022 KDCA-APQA joint response, requires modernization toward risk-based, quantitative, and One Healthintegrated operation to address the persistent reservoir documented herein.

Inflammatory dermatitis is characterized by epidermal barrier disruption, cutaneous inflammation, and dysregulated cytokine responses. Aster yomena (AY), an edible medicinal plant traditionally used in Korea, has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluated the effects of orally administered AY extract in a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced dermatitis model using SKH-1 hairless mice. Mice were assigned to six groups (n = 5 per group) and treated during a 5-week experimental period. Mice were assigned to normal control, DNCB-treated control, dexamethasone-treated positive control, and AY extract-treated groups. Gross skin lesions, relative spleen weight, serum interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels, and histopathological changes were assessed. DNCB-treated mice developed marked crusting, dryness, swelling, increased relative spleen weight, elevated serum IL-4 levels, and epidermal hyperplasia with dermal inflammation. Oral administration of AY extract improved gross lesions, reduced relative spleen weight and serum IL-4 levels, and attenuated epidermal thickening, edema, and inflammatory cell infiltration. These findings indicate that AY extract showed preliminary anti-inflammatory and antidermatitic effects in a DNCB-induced SKH-1 hairless mouse model and warrant further mechanistic and translational studies.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) remains a serious global threat to the swine industry due to its high mortality rate and the lack of a widely effective vaccine. In this study, we developed an attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium-based delivery platform, JOL2500, to deliver constructs encoding selected ASFV antigens, including the structural proteins p54 and p72, and virulence- or immune-associated proteins 9GL, HA/CD2v, and C-type lectin. The expression of these recombinant antigens was confirmed in vitro using SDS-PAGE, RT-PCR, and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) in RAW 264.7 cells. The immunogenicity of the recombinant constructs was then evaluated in BALB/c mice following intramuscular immunization. Compared with the vector control group, vaccinated mice showed increased antigen-specific systemic antibody responses, including IgM, IgG1, and IgG2a, as well as enhanced mucosal secretory IgA responses. In addition, splenocytes from immunized mice showed increased proliferation and metabolic activity after antigen simulation. Cytokine analysis revealed a pro-inflammatory and Th1-associated cytokine profile, marked by elevated levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-17. Flow cytometry further demonstrated immunization-associated shifts in splenocyte immune-cell populations. Overall, these findings demonstrate that Salmonellamediated delivery of multiple ASFV antigens can induce broad humoral, mucosal, and cellular immune responses in mice. Although protective efficacy against ASFV infection still needs to be confirmed in future studies, this work provides a promising proof of concept for developing safe, practical, and cost-effective ASFV vaccine candidates.

With the increase in pet-owning households and the expansion of cross-border shopping, the unquarantined importation of pet food containing animal-derived ingredients has been rising. These products can serve as a potential vector of biological and chemical hazards, such as African swine fever (ASF) virus, Salmonella, aflatoxins, and melamine, posing a serious threat to animal health and public health in Korea. However, the current manifest clearance system is vulnerable to false declaration of product description. In addition, the structural difficulty in tracking contents during transit through overseas package forwarding facilities has facilitated pet food products designated for quarantine inspection to bypass proper quarantine procedures and enter the country. This study, based on relevant legislation and empirical data, identifies structural deficiencies in the current quarantine system and proposes improvements across legal, technological, and administrative dimensions to enhance the effectiveness of quarantine enforcement.
