This study compares four major Korean hate speech corpora to analyze differences in target group categorization and the impact of construction methods. The results show that the proportions of key target groups— gender, origin, physical traits, and ideology—vary greatly depending on how the corpus was compiled. In particular, keyword-based data sets revealed a notably higher focus on gender, with the influence of data collectors’ subjectivity and contemporary social issues clearly reflected. Furthermore, by analyzing the intersectionality and exclusivity of hate speech, we identified complex interconnections among target groups and challenges in classification arising from contextual usage. The study recommends the development of theme-specific and context-aware corpora to accurately capture these features.

This study investigates how the term burnout was framed, transformed, and made to function in Korean public discourse from 2010 to 2024. Drawing on 9,206 news articles retrieved from the BigKinds database, the research applies an integrated analytical framework combining Entman’s (1993) four framing functions with Leventhal’s Common-Sense Model (CSM) of illness representation. Five dominant frames —medicalisation, individualisation, normalisation, risk framing, and metaphorisation— were identified through quantitative content analysis and qualitative coding with MAXQDA 2024 (qualitative and mixed-methods analysis software). Results show a marked shift from a medicalised frame in Period 1 (2010-2015) to an increasingly normalised frame in Period 3 (2021-2024), indicating a recontextualisation of burnout from an individual pathological condition to a shared everyday experience. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests, interrupted time series analysis, and keyword network mapping, reveal significant temporal changes in frame distribution, functional complexity, and co-occurrence patterns. The framing functions were found to systematically structure CSM dimensions, shaping public perceptions of identity, causation, temporality, consequences, and controllability. These findings demonstrate that the reframing of burnout reflects not only shifts in linguistic representation but also broader socio-cultural and political reconfigurations, with implications for health communication, organisational policy, and public health strategies.

The purpose of this paper is to study how the term “Honmono,” used as a form of hate speech, gained public attention following the release of Makoto Shinkai‘s film “Your Name” (2017) and has affected individuals and society. It also considers the film’s implications in 2023 in relation to Shinkai’s subsequent film “Suzume.” In this study, news articles and online community posts from 2017 were collected and analyzed. In addition, data from Naver Datalab, an online service, and a survey conducted during the popularity of “Suzume” (2023) were utilized. The analysis showed that there were limitations in the“three stages leading to hate speech anddiscrimination“model proposed in earlier research. Accordingly, this paper proposes a revised model better suited to the case of “Honmono.”

This phenomenological and sociolinguistic study investigates current human perceptions of dialogue with generative artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on intellectual, emotional, and moral dimensions. Participants were female humanities and social sciences researchers in their thirties with extensive AI experience. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews based on real-time interaction with ChatGPT and analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) framework. Results indicate that AI was construed as a strategic collaborator restructuring information into research insights and as a creative mediator integrating diverse resources to generate solutions in academic, professional, and interpersonal contexts. Trust in AI, however, remained conditional, reflecting recognition of its limited autonomy and restricted reliability in expert domains. Emotionally and morally, AI was consistently framed as a non-agentive, emotionally neutral entity. Its affective expressions were interpreted as imitations rather than authentic emotions, and interactions were evaluated through human-centered criteria of utility, risk, and safety. This study provides phenomenological insights into human–AI interaction, showing that humans primarily view AI as an instrumental tool bounded by efficiency and safety. Ultimately, it raises a fundamental question: what constitutes genuine interaction between humans and AI, establishing a basis for future ethical discourse and development.

This study examines how trauma victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster were selectively represented in the Chosun Ilbo, a major conservative daily newspaper in South Korea. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, it analyzes 44 news texts collected from 2014 to 2024, focusing on the strategies of naming, grammatical choice, and intertextuality. The findings show that the coverage consistently foregrounded “Danwon High School students” as the central symbol of public grief, while ordinary passengers, divers, rescue workers, and surviving families were often marginalized or depicted only in functional roles. Such discursive practices created implicit hierarchies of suffering in which some victims’ pain was recognized and remembered, while others were backgrounded or forgotten. Moreover, the reports frequently reframed trauma through psychological or medical discourse, reducing it to treatment and recovery, and diverting attention away from questions of structural responsibility. Intertextual links with later disasters, such as the Itaewon crowd crush, further recontextualized Sewol as part of generational trauma and collective memory. These results suggest that trauma recovery is not merely an individual or clinical matter but also shaped by how victims are socially represented and emotionally positioned within public discourse.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the language attitude and perception of multilingual education for children of old overseas Chinese in Korea. To this end, three old overseas Chinese from different backgrounds were selected as participants in the study, and in-depth interviews were conducted according to the qualitative narrative research method. As a result of the study, the participants still maintained an affection and positive attitude toward Chinese even after living in Korea for a long time, and showed a willingness to protect the traditional Chinese culture. However, as generations changed and people gradually became familiar with Korean society, there has been a tendency to increase the use of Korean and decrease the use of Chinese in daily life. While Korean was perceived as a language that could be acquired naturally through everyday exposure without formal instruction, Chinese was not acquired as sufficiently as expected due to the limitations of the learning and use environment. Although participants recognized the necessity of English education, their actual engagement with it remained relatively limited.

This paper reviews existing research on Critical Language Awareness (CLA) and argues that, despite its relevance to linguistic justice and democratic citizenship, CLA research and pedagogy remain underdeveloped in the Korean educational context. Drawing on sociolinguistics, critical discourse analysis, and other related fields, it explores potential directions for integrating CLA into language education in thematic areas: linguistic forms and functions, language as a social practice, semiotic landscapes, multilingual hierarchies, and narrative identities. Rather than presenting empirical findings, this study offers an exploratory framework intended to stimulate scholarly and pedagogical dialogue on CLA in Korea, emphasizing its role in enabling learners to critically examine dominant language ideologies, recognize sociopolitical dimensions of language use, and reflect on their linguistic identities.

As social networking service (SNS) platforms become increasingly integrated into foreign language education, their impact on learner motivation and intercultural competence may vary depending on the learning context. This mixed-methods study compares American college students learning Korean as a foreign language (KFL) and Korean learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) to examine how SNS-mediated intercultural contact affects motivational orientations and intercultural development. A total of 107 university students (56 KFL, 51 EFL) engaged in semester-long Facebook-based interactions. Pre- and post-semester surveys assessed intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, intercultural communicative competence, and intercultural sensitivity, followed by qualitative analysis of students’ reflections. KFL learners showed a significant increase in intrinsic motivation across the semester, while extrinsic motivation remained unchanged. Compared with the EFL group, they achieved greater gains in intercultural communicative competence (attitudes and skills) and intercultural sensitivity (respect), reflecting deeper interpersonal engagement and emotional openness. Their reflections emphasized peer-based cultural learning beyond textbook knowledge. EFL learners, without significant motivational changes, showed growth in intercultural communicative competence (knowledge and awareness) and increased confidence and enjoyment in the SNS interaction. Their reflections portrayed the interaction as academically structured and limited in spontaneity. These findings highlight the critical role of learning context in mediating how SNS-based intercultural engagement supports motivation and intercultural development.
