In the Present-Day English adjectives and participles are often followed by a preposition plus V-ing (hereafter called PG construction). However, some adjectives and participles can be immediately followed by V-ing without an intermediate preposition (hereafter NG). Therefore, such adjectives/participles can have both NG and PG constructions. This article investigates 13 such predicates (happy, comfortable, bored, tired, fed up; busy, engaged, occupied; late, quick, slow, done, finished) in the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) and examines the frequency changes of their NG vs PG structures in American English from 1820 to 2009. The findings of this study are as follows: (i) NG is a more recent structure than PG, (ii) the frequency of NG has gradually increased over time with most predicates, (iii) except engaged, the percentage of NG to PG was higher in the late 1900 than the early 1800, and with some predicates NG is more preferred than PG in the Present-Day English, (iv) as shown by the fact that some predicates were more resistant to the change, a linguistic innovation does not apply simultaneously but spread gradually across the relevant lexical items/structures.

Eunsuk Lee. 2016. The Basis for Use of Singular they: From Historical, Semantic, and Cognitive Perspectives. Studies in Modern Grammar 90, 31-43. This study investigates the basis for use of singular they from a few different perspectives. Firstly, from a historical perspective, the singular they is not something that appeared all of a sudden in modern English since it has been used for a long period of time. Singular they did not appear by mistake as its use can be found in the writings of many respected authors. Secondly, considering the notional concord and the referential ambiguity of plural pronouns from a viewpoint of semantics, there are two different uses of singular they - one is to indicate indefinite pronouns and the other is to specify generic nouns. Lastly, from a cognitive perspective, singular they is a cognitively efficient substitute for he or she, or it seems to be cognitively more efficient than those pronouns. Considering all of the perspectives listed above, it is arguable that the use of singular they should not be proscribed like they has been by normative grammarians, but accepted as a change in the use of English pronouns.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze gerund construction on the basis of gradience which was proposed by Aarts (2007, 2008), comparing with previous studies such as HPSG (Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar) approach and WG (Word Grammar) approach under multiple default inheritance. This paper explores syntactic properties of gerunds which have both nominal and verbal nature. The nominal nature of gerunds concerns with external patterns to the gerunds, and the verbal nature of gerunds concerns with their internal patterns. Keeping these properties in mind, this paper examines the logic of multiple default inheritance which allows a single node to inherit from two supercategories, in this case from both noun and verb, and then points out some problems. The paper introduces an alternative analysis, that is, the gradience approach, and argues that English gerunds can be explained neatly by the notion of intersective gradience which makes use of the concept of convergence. Above all, this paper devises a gradient diagram on the basis of basic explanations, and ensures that this diagram can help students to understand confusing gerunds.

Mean-Young Song. 2016. The Temporal Interpretation in Double Access Sentences in English. Studies in Modern Grammar 90, 69-97. This paper investigates the semantics of double‐access sentences (DAS) in which the present tense is embedded under the matrix past in propositional attitudes. There are two major approaches to their semantics; the de re (Abusch (1997) and Ogihara (1995 and 1996) and the de dicto (Gennari (1999) and Smirnova (2009)) approach. The de re analysis requires an acquaintance relation, but it is not always necessary in some cases. Gennari’s de dicto analysis poses a problem when it deals with a mistaken belief and a situation where the mismatch between the semantic and the pragmatic aspect (more precisely, the speaker’s pragmatic inference) takes place. As a more appropriate semantic analysis of DAS, this paper proposes that the presuppositional semantic approach and the Kratzer-style modal semantics incorporate into the semantics of DAS since it is the characteristic of DAS that not only does DAS involve presupposition, but attitude holder's background knowledge can also provide us with a clue as to whether or not the content of the embedded proposition holds at the utterance time. This may assist in understanding the semantics of DAS.

Youn-Kyoung Lee. 2016. The Effect of Discourse Markers on EFL Reading Comprehension. Studies in Modern Grammar 90, 99-115. The present study aimed at examining the effect of macro- and micro-discourse markers in EFL academic reading comprehension. The study involved 70 college students, enrolling the ‘Intermediate English Reading Course,’ and they were from diverse majors. Of 70 participants, half (n=35) read a text with discourse markers and the other half (n=35) read a text without discourse markers. The findings of the study revealed that discourse markers played an important role in English reading comprehension. Compared to the group without discourse markers, the group with discourse makers comprehended significantly more information from English academic reading in an accurate manner. The present study makes an important contribution to the current literature on EFL reading comprehension, by providing the additional empirical evidence concerning the effect of macro-and micro discourse markers as well as the combination of both on English reading comprehension.

Melody with text has been known to play a positive role as a memory aid and a learning facilitator. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of song on young EFL learners’ text recall, especially focusing on the factors of memory retention, L2 proficiency, and text length. 41 Korean young learners of English between the aged of 11 and 12 years participated. As a result, significant effects of song text have been observed in the young EFL learners’text recall in L2. They appear to undergo the process of text and melody integration and take an advantage of the song mode in recalling the words and even a longer phrase for a larger amount of time, especially in their second language. The findings shed lights on pedagogical application of songs to second language teaching for young learners.

It has been claimed that a polysemous expression will occur in different patterns depending on the specific meaning intended. This suggests that, conversely, the pattern in which an expression is used should reveal which of its meanings are intended by the speaker/writer. In the paper, the meaning-pattern association of the phrasal verb stand by is investigated, based on the observation of the corpus, Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The result shows that each meaning of the phrasal verb stand by occurs in a separate set of preconstructed patterns so that it can be easily distinguished from the others. One meaning of stand by, ‘to be present but fail to stop something bad from happening’ is set apart from other meanings, ‘to support’ and ‘to be ready,’ which are more closely linked together. This contrastive meaning has a more restricted set of preconstructed patterns than the other meanings. That is, a meaning that sets itself apart will have a more restricted set of patterns to reflect its specialized usage.
