Mg55Y15Cu30 metallic glass powders were prepared by the mechanical alloying of pure Mg, Y, and Cu after 10 h of milling. The thermal stability of these Mg55Y15Cu30 amorphous powders was investigated using the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Tg ,Tx , and ΔTx are 442 K, 478 K, and 36 K, respectively. The as-milled Mg55Y15Cu30 powders were then consolidated by vacuum hot pressing into disk compacts with a diameter and thickness of 10 mm and 1 mm, respectively. This yielded bulk Mg55Y15Cu30 metallic glass with nanocrystalline precipitates homogeneously embedded in a highly dense glassy matrix. The pressure applied during consolidation can enhance thermal stability and prolong the existence of amorphous phase within Mg55Y15Cu30 powders.

The mechanical properties of sintered low alloy steels were analysed using Finite Element Methods (FEM), in which the powder is modelled as an elastic–plastic continuum material. A quantitative analysis of microstructure was correlated with tensile and fatigue behavior to understand the influence of pore size, shape, and distribution on mechanical behavior. Tensile strength, Young’s modulus, strain-to-failure, and fatigue strength all increased with a decrease in porosity. The decrease in Young’s modulus with increasing porosity was predicted by analytical modeling. Two-dimensional microstructure-based finite element modeling showed that the enhanced tensile and fatigue behavior of the denser steels could be attributed to smaller, more homogeneous, and more spherical porosity which resulted in more homogeneous deformation and decreased strain localization in the material. The relationship between relative density of P/M steels and mechanical behavior is also obtained from FEA and compared with the experimenta data. Good agreement between the experimental and FEA results is observed, which demonstrates that FEA can capture the major features of the P/M steels behaviour during loading. The implications of pore size, morphology, and distribution on the mechanical behavior and fracture of P/M steels are discussed. It is therefore demonstrated that FEA can predict the possible mechanism of failure during loading.

Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn quaternary amorphous alloys of Ti50Cu32Ni15Sn3, Ti50Cu25Ni20Sn5, and Ti50Cu23Ni20Sn7 composition were prepared by mechanical alloying in a planetary high-energy ball-mill (AGO-2). The amorphization of all three alloys was found to set in after milling at 300rpm speed for 2h. A complete amorphization was observed for Ti50Cu32Ni15Sn3 and Ti50Cu25Ni20Sn5 after 30h and 20h of milling, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses revealed that the thermal stability increased in the order of Ti50Cu32Ni15Sn3, Ti50Cu25Ni20Sn5, and Ti50Cu23Ni20Sn7.

Fe-doped TiO2 nanopowders were prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) varying Fe contents up to 8.0 wt.%. The UV-vis absorption showed that the UV absorption for the Fe-doped powder shifted to a longer wavelength (red shift). The absorption threshold depends on the concentration of nano-size Fe dopant. As the Fe concentration increased up to 4 wt.%, the UV-vis absorption and the magnetization were increased. The benefical effect of Fe doping for photocatalysis and ferromagnetism had the critical dopant concentration of 4 wt.%. Based on the UV absorption and magnetization, the dopant level is localized to the valence band of TiO2.

Fe doped skutterudite CoSb3 with a nominal composition of FexCo1-xSb12 (0≤x≤2.5) have been synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of elemental powders, followed by vacuum hot pressing. Phase transformations during mechanical alloying and vacuum hot pressing were systematically investigated using XRD. Single phase skutterudite was successfully produced by vacuum hot pressing using as-milled powders without subsequent annealing. However, second phase of FeSb2 was found to exist in case of x≥2, suggesting the solubility limit of Fe with Co in this system. Thermoelectric properties as functions of temperature and Fe contents were evaluated for the hot pressed specimens. Fe doping up to x=1.5 with Co in FexCo4-xSb12 appeared to increase thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) and the maximum ZT was found to be 0.78 at 525K in this study.

Li reacts with N2 at room temperature. In order to activate Li, the mechanical milling of Li with stable metal oxide, namely, Al2O3 and MgO, using a high energy vibrating ball mill was performed. In the case of Li-MgO system, it reacts with N2, but hardly reacts with O2. The reaction with N2 generally produces Li3N, while for some vigorous reactions the Mg3N2 is produced as the major phases. In the case of Li-Al2O3 system, reactivities with both N2 and O2 are high. The difference is explained in terms of the reaction mechanism and the Li state.

The precipitation behaviors of γ″(Ni3Nb) in four Ni-base alloys were investigated. The four alloys were forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, IN 718 alloy and ECAPed(equal channel angular pressing) IN 718 alloy. Aging treatment was employed at either 600℃ or 720℃ for 20 hrs. The TEM observation and hardness test were performed to identify the formation of γ″. The precipitation of γ″ was noticed after aging at 600℃ for 20 hrs in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy, while it was observed after aging at 720℃ for 20 hrs in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP. The lower aging temperature for γ″ precipitation in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy than in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP appeared to be due to the severe plastic deformation which occurred during mechanical alloying or ECAP.

The injection molded Fe sintered bodies were fabricated using two kinds of nano Fe powders, Fe-5%vol.ZrO2 and Fe-10vol.%ZrO2 powders. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties depending on the ZrO2 contents and sintering temperature were characterized by SEM and TEM techniques. In the wear test, the Fe-0vol%ZrO2 sintered bodies showed mainly adhesive wear, but in the Fe-5%vol. ZrO2 and Fe-10vol. % ZrO2 composites the main wear behavior showed abrasive wear mode.

This research reports for the successful consolidation of Al2O3 powder with retained ultra-fine structure using MPC and sintering. Measurements in the consolidated Al2O3 bulk indicated that hardness, fracture toughenss, and breakdown voltage have been much improved relative to the conventional polycrystalline materials. Finally, optimization of the compaction parameters and sintering conditions will lead to the consolidation of Al2O3 nanopowder with higher density and even further enhanced mechanical properties.

In present work, manufacturing technologies of titanium hydride powder were studied for recycling of titanium tuning chip and for this, attrition ball milling was carried out under H2 pressure of 0.5 MPa. Ti chips were completely transformed into TiH2 within several hundred seconds. Dehydrogenation process TiH2 powders is consist of two reactions: one is reaction of TiH2 to TiHx and the other decomposition of TiHx to Ti and H2. The former reaction shows relatively low activation energy and it is suggested that the reaction is caused by introduction of defects due to milling.

Mechanochemical synthesis of zinc ferrite, ZnFe2O4, was attempted from a powder mixture of iron (III) oxide, alpha-Fe2O3 and zinc (II) oxide, ZnO. Nanocrystalline zinc ferrite, ZnFe2O4 powders were successfully synthesized only bymilling for 30 hours. Evidence of the ZnFe2O4 formation was absent for the powders milled for 10 and 20 hours; the milling lowered the crystallinity of the starting materials. Heating after milling enhanced the formation of ZnFe2O4, crystal growth of ZnFe2O4 and the unreacted starting materials. The unreacted starting materials decreased their amounts by heating at higher temperatures.

The present paper is a parameter study of zinc flake production using a Simoloyer CM01 horizontal high energy rotary ball mill. The manufactured flakes have a dimension in thickness (t) < 1μm and diameters (d) 5-100 μm, consequently a ratio d/t up to 200. The flake geometry is mainly controlled by the variation of process parameters such as rotary speed of the rotor, ratio of powder/ball charge, load ratio of the system, process temperature, operating model and the quantity of process control agent (PCA). The Zn flakes were characterized by SEM, tap densitometry, laser diffraction and water coverage measurement.

In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement of metallic powders with least grain growth. ECAP (Equal channel angular pressing) was used for the powder consolidation. We investigated the consolidation, plastic deformation and microstructure evolution behavior of the metallic powders during ECAP using an experimental method. It was found that high mechanical strength could be achieved effectively as a result of the well bonded powder contact surface during ECAP process of gas atomized Al-Si powders.

In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve full density of Carbon nanotube (CNT)/metal matrix composites with superior mechanical properties by improved particle bonding and least grain growth, which were considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using the conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), the most promising method in SPD, was used for the CNT/Cu powder consolidation. The powder ECAP processing with 1, 2, 4 and 8 route C passes was conducted at room temperature.
