This study was conducted to investigate needs and operational status for care farming of education or experience farms in South Korea. A questionnaire made up of 38 questions was developed for this study. The survey was conducted online among owners in education and experience farms (total 264 sites) in Seoul and nine provinces in September 2017. A total of 78 questionnaires were collected and the response rate was 44.6%. As the results, the purposes of farm operation reported as experience (85.9%), education (79.5%), production of agricultural products (67.9%), and healing (47.4%). Main visitors in education and experience farm were children and adolescents (89.7%), adults (51.3%), and families (46.2%). A farm activity program was mainly provided by a one-time experience using crops (69.2%), animals (16.7%), and food processing activity (10.3%). Fifty percent of the responding farmers received support from the government and the local government such as public relations (32.5%), operational funding (32.5%), and management consulting (15.0%). The lack factor of operating in farms was lower profit system (24.4%), poor farm infrastructure (21.8%), and lack of promotion and marketing ways (16.7%). 97.5% of the respondents reported ‘very necessary’ and ‘necessary’ of care farming. Specifically, the care farming service reported that priority should be given to children and adolescents (55.1%) and people with emotional and behavior disorder (15.4%). The present study is anticipated to offer the efficient management of care farm and provides reference data of the policy suggestion for care farming setting in South Korea.

In this study, we used dried ginger ethanol extracts which had been used for alleviation of pain and antipyretics for a long time, and confirmed anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities among various pharmacological actions of dried ginger. The result of antioxidant activity using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity, dried ginger shows concentration-dependent radical scavenging activity and more than 80% radical scavenging activity at concentration of dried ginger above 1 mg/ml. Also, in the mouse experiment in which gluten intolerance was induced by providing gluten meal, the effect of inhibiting weight loss was confirmed comparing administrated gluten group and dried ginger administration group. In addition, IL-4, an allergic cytokine, was measured in the small intestine and serum using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), the results showed that IL-4 production in the dried ginger administration group was significantly reduced compared with the administered gluten 200 mg/ml group. In case of IL-6 and TNF-α production, which are inflammatory cytokines, decreased in the primary culture cell treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for induction of inflammation after treatment with dried ginger in a dose-dependent manner. As a result, it was confirmed that the dried ginger extract has a high antioxidant activity and has a mitigating effect on the gluten intolerance which is an inflammatory allergic reaction.

This study aimed to analyze the effects of a horticultural occupation therapy program using a healing garden on the emotional rehabilitation of patients with acute and chronic mental disorders, and to identify the possibility of using horticultural occupational therapy as a mental rehabilitation service to promote the social rehabilitation of patients with mental disorders. In this study, 20 patients diagnosed as chronic mental disorder at Seoul Metropolitan E hospital and 22 as acute mental disorder at Incheon H hospital were divided into 2 groups for Horticultural occupation therapy (HOT) and Group occupational therapy (GOT). General occupational therapy was provided 4 times a week for the experimental groups of patients with chronic and acute mental disorders, and a horticultural occupational therapy program using a healing garden was provided only once a week, a total of 12 sessions, for the experimental groups. For the control groups of patients with acute and chronic mental disorders, occupational therapy was provided 5 times a week only. Among the acute mental disorder patients, the treatment group showed a significant decrease in Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and emotional stress scale (ES), whereas the control group didn’t (p<.001). On the other hand, such significant changes were not seen among the chronic GOT. Futhermore, the chronic HOT showed the significant effect in physical stress scale (PSE).

This study was conducted to suggest more effective ways to create successful ecological playgrounds. For this study, current status of ecological playgrounds, users’ satisfaction and preference were analyzed in July, 2016. A case study was done at Yangpyeong ecological playground, Umyeonsan ecological playground, and Gulponuri ecological playground. To detect current status, location suitability, naturality, eco-education playfulness, and rest・community were examined. Also, It examined users’ satisfaction by accessibility, rest・community facility and preference with programs. As a result, planting rate of native species compared to total species did not exceed maximum 45%. Distribution of educational guidance facilities compared to nature experience and play facilities was at least 62.5%. As a result of analyzing satisfaction and preferences on selected sites, users generally had above average level of satisfaction on a 5-point scale. By contrast, the satisfaction on rest facilities, including pergolas and benches was lower. So complementarity of rest and community was required. In case of preference about additional programs at ecological playgrounds, the average preference of taste focused programs was the lowest among programs focusing five senses. Hence, to boost participation and maximize effectiveness of ecological experience, more sensory educational programs should be considered, such as forest observation, smelling flowers focused on olfactory sense, and listening to sounds in forest focused on auditory sense. In additional facilities preference, users most wanted to supplement and add play rides, pergolas and benches. Users wanted to expand rest spaces and experience learning center on a similar level at every single selected site. This study focused on current status analysis of ecological playgrounds in the targeted places, satisfaction of users and preference survey. With ecological resource utilization program plans considering communities, corporations, and environment, it would be able to contribute to bigger creation effects.

The study revolved around the forests of Yangjae Citizen’s Forest, a park where the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) was applied. The survey methods for analysis are as follows. From August to October, a total of eight surveys were conducted and 147 of the 300 samples collected were utilized for analysis. According to the results of the survey, 43.5% of participants were males and 56.5% were females. The highest number of participants visited the forest at midday and aged twenties visited most among all age groups. The participants visited the forest mostly with family and the main purpose of visit was for walking exercise including strolling. In case of criminal experience two sexual harassment (6.0%), and a fraud crime (3.0%) were tallied. Insecurity analysis resulted that “other users’ drinking” and “few Closed-Circuit Televisions (CCTVs)” were found to increase visitor’s insecurity. According to the psychological security analysis, participants reported they felt safer in open space than the enclosed areas. They also responded that dense wooded areas along the trails would increase the level of insecurity, while open space and resting areas were effectively relieve unsafe feelings. CCTVs and lighting fixtures facilities in the study area play an important role to effectively manage the park to prevent crime.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status of the construction of indoor gardens in expressway service areas. This study can be utilized as basic data for efficient and successful indoor garden introduction in future service areas and improvements for current service areas on expressways. The study period was from September 2, 2016 to October 11, 2017. The status of indoor garden was determined by visiting 147 expressway service areas in Korea. Physical environment survey items include architectural structure, usage type, facility and garden ornament, mobility, material of planter, soil type and planting plants. Among the 147 major expressway service areas, 56 were constructed with indoor gardens done, showing an indoor garden construction ratio of 38%. In terms of the number of service areas with indoor gardens in expressway, Gyeongbu Expressway had the largest number of 16 areas. This was followed by 10 in Jungang Highway, 8 in the Jungbunaeryuk Expressway, 6 in the Seohaean Expressway, 4 in the Namhae Expressway, 4 in the Youngdong Expressway, 3 in the Donghaean Expressway, 3 in Tongyeong-daejeon Jungbu Expressway, and 2 in Honam Expressway. Thirty five service areas in expressway were constructed with natural flowers, 7 service areas were decorated with artificial flowers, and 14 service areas were arranged with both natural and artificial flowers. Most of the indoor gardens in the expressway were constructed in the restroom space, 47 in the men’s restroom and 50 in the women’s restroom. The indoor garden landscape in the expressway service area was all designed as a fixed garden type, except for three places composed of portable planters. There were 19 families, 27 genera, and 30 species of plants found in the indoor gardens in the expressway service areas.
