This study was carried out to investigate and assess the cold tolerance of 24 species broad-leaved evergreen trees in southern region, South Korea, and propose the selection for urban greening responsive to the climate change. The cold stressed impact of each species was measured and calculated by the electrolyte leakage (EL) method, and then the lethal temperature was predicted by the non-linear regression analysis. The scattered plots and fitted curves of most species tended to show sigmoidal response curve. On assessing the EL values and sigmoidal response curve pattern with different temperature, the differences were obviously showed among all the species. Also, among the species within the same family, the differences were obviously showed. The maximum temperature difference among the species was over 10℃. Between Ilex rutunda and Ilex integra within the same family, Aquifoliaceae, it was over 10℃. The results indicate that there are significant differences in cold tolerance among different species in the same region, which are not affected by any environmental factors but affected by any genetical factors. Thus it is valuable to assess the cold tolerance on most broad-leaved evergreen trees in southern region, South Korea. As a result, Euonymus japonicus, Trachelospermum asiaticum, Dendropanax morbiferus, Ilex integra, Machilus thunbergii, Ilex x wandoensis, Cinnamomum japonicum, Distylium racemosum, and Castanopsis sieboldii may have better cold tolerance and survive the region closer to middle region, South Korea compared to the others.

For developing natural preservatives and insecticide contained in volatile organic compounds of Elsholtzia ciliata and Agastache rugosa, the composition of two plants were analyzed and tested on microorganism survival and insectcide effect from TD-GC-MSD analysis. Main components of Elsholtzia ciliata were elsholtzia ketone, dehydroelsholtzia ketone (82%) and caryophyllene (10%). Main components of Agastache rugosa were estragole (88.2%), dl-limonene (4.5%), and trans-caryophyllene (2%). Inhibition activity of 70% methyl-alcohol extract of A. rugosa against growth of Enterobacter cloacae and Salmonella typhimurium was signifcant effect of observed clear zone and that of E. ciliata was against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. The mosquito larvae was totally died treated by 0.5g powder of A. rugosa for 3 hours, while 80% of the mosquito larvae was died in E. ciliata powder processing. Mortality of mosquito is the first 5 minutes after the smoked incense treatment showed 65% is E. ciliata and 80% in A. rugos and then finally all mosquito died after 20 minutes.

We need to look into optimal light intensity of evergreen broad-leaved trees in order to ornamental value of plants growing indoors because different kinds of them have a difference of light intensity. This study was conducted to evaluate the shade tolerance with shading treatment by analyzing the growth and physiological responses of Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai and Ardisia crenata Sims, which have been considered to have potentials to grow as indoor-cultivated ornamental trees. The shading treatments were regulated with shading rations of full sunlight, and 35%, 50%, 95% of full sunlight. As a result of surveying growth under different shading rations, H/D ratio and T/R ratio of S. glabrai and A. crenata under shading treatment were higher than full sunlight. The total leaf area (cm 2 ) of S. glabra was observed to increasing by 50% shading. A. crenata showed the highest at 95% shading. S. glabrai and A. crenata under 95% shading would lower the L*a*b value and turn a leaf color into dark green, and the chlorophyll content was significantly decreased. The leaf color of both of these trees were determined to have a sensitive reaction to light intensity. The photosynthetic capacity of S. glabra and A. crenata were respectively the greatest at 50% shading or 95% shading, and the light compensation point of both of these trees was the lowest at 50% and 95% shading. Although it was indicated that 50% shading is suitable for S. glabrai and A. crenata to grow healthy, they actively responded to low light intensity of 95% shading as well, confirming that they have shade tolerance. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that S. glabrai and A. crenataare appropriate as indoor ornamental tree.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of creative horticultural activities on low-income class children’s self-esteem and stress coping behavior. For this purpose, 10 children were sampled from low-income class children using H Community Child Center in K City, and creative horticultural activities were applied to them two sessions a week and a total of 12 sessions from July 4 to August 22, 2014. Based on the factors of creativity in horticultural activities, creative horticultural activities were designed to induce fluency through learning the importance and use of plants, flexibility through observing the growth of plants, originality through breeding plants, elaborateness through decorating with plants, and sensitivity through classifying plants. Ultimately, the activities were designed to induce positive changes in low-income class children’s emotional development. For understanding the effectiveness of the creative horticultural activity program, this study assessed the children before and after the creative horticultural activities using a self-esteem scale and a stress coping scale. The results of assessment were as follows. First, the children’s self-esteem level was enhanced significantly from 27.9±3.9 before the activities to 30.7±2.3 after on the average. Their stress coping behavior was improved significantly from 49.0±5.6 before the horticultural activities to 54.3±5.2 after. In particular, significant changes were observed in active coping behavior and socialsupport- seeking coping behavior. These results suggest that creative horticultural activities for low-income class children have positive effects on their emotional development.

The aims of this research were to examine whether horticultural activity is appropriate for personality education to prevent reformatory students from redelinquency, to make use of it for developing educational programs and to take advantage of the research as based information. In order to accomplish the purposes, the researches and surveys were taken in four parts targeting 262 reformatory students from five different Youth Detention Centers out of ten centers in the country: simple mental health diagnostic inventory, general characteristics, preferences of personality programs that are currently underway to juvenile delinquents in juvenile protection education institution, and awareness and preference of the plants and horticultural activities. First of all, as a result of simple mental health diagnostic inventory, ‘depression’ appeared to be the highest while ‘hostility’, ‘somatization’, ‘obsessional thinking’, ‘interpersonal sensitivity’, ‘anxiety’ and ‘psychosis’ emerged in the order. Secondly, as a result of preferences of personality programs, ‘social work’ appeared relatively the highest, while ‘Do-dream program’, ‘art therapy’, ‘career exploration’, and ‘sex education’ showed in the order. Thirdly, 53.3% students responded that personality programs through horticultural activities is desirable and 84% appeared that they prefer it. The most preferred plant species were fruit trees (strawberries, apples), flowers (roses, herbs) and vegetables (Scatter cucumbers, tomatoes). The most interesting garden activities were ‘growing (cultivation)’, ‘decorating (decoration and craft)’ and ‘feeling plants (appreciating).’ Therefore, it is well ascertained that juvenile delinquents in juvenile protection education institution consider introducing horticultural programs into personality education positive. Based on these results, it is identified that more various and specialized horticulture programs to prevent reformatory students from redelinquency should be developed for practical use.
