The plant Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis (Compositae) is a candidate for available functional foods. It has been used to treat diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis. We have reported the isolation of a new eremophilanolide named 6-oxoeremophilenolide and cytotoxic intermedeol together with the isolation of hydrophilic constituents, chlorogenic acid, 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acie (3), and 5-O-[1-butyl]-3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid. Compound 3 was again isolated by combination of silica gel- and ODS column chromatography for the anti-nociceptive action. Compound 3 and 4 were assayed in hot plate- and writhing tests in the rat. Although the three derivatives of caffeic acid exhibited significant anti-nociceptive effects at 10 mg/kg dose (i.p.),(activity potency: 4>3). These results suggest that compound 3 is responsible for at least rheumatoid arthritis, and caffeic acid moiety is the active moiety of dicaffeoylquinic acid.

To develop a clinically available saponin- or sapogenin complex from Oriental medicines, the EtOH extract (KPRG-A) was obtained by extracting from the four crude drugs, Kalopanacis Cortex, Platycodi Radix, Rubi Fructus and Glycyrrhizae Radis. The BuOH fraction (KPRG-B), a crude saponin complex, was prepared by fractionating KPRG-A, which were further completely hydrolyzed to afford the sapogenin complex (KPRG-D). In an attempt to find the antinoicpetive effects of the saponin complex and sapogenin complex, KPRG-C, and -D, were assayed by writhing-, hot plate-, and tail-flick tests using mice or rats. The three samples were also subjected to antiiflammatory tests using serotonin-induced and carrageenan-induced hind paw edema mice and rats, respectively. The three samples significantly reduced inflammations and pains of the experimental animal. The potency were found in the order of KPRG-D> KPRG-C> KPRG-B. The most active sample, KPRG-D, caused no death, no body increase or no anatomical pathlogic change even at 2,000 mg/kg dose. These results suggest that a sapogenin complex, KPRG-D, which was found to contain mainly hederagenin, platycodigenin, polygalacic acid, 23-hydroxytormentic acid, glycyrrhetic acid together with minor triterpene acids, could be a potential candidate for antiinflammatory therapeutics.

The present study was undertaken to classify and describe the riparian vegetation of the 6 river·stream of Korea Peninsula. As a result the vegetation was divided into nineteen communities. The vegetation units obtained in the present study were as follow: A: Salix koreensis community, B: Salix gracilistyla community, C: Robinia pseudo-acacia community, D: Amorpha fluticosa community, E: Brousonnetia papyrifera community, F: Phyllostachys bambusoides community, G: Rubus corchorifolius community, H: Phramities japonica community, I: Phramites communis community, J: Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, K: Miscanthus sinesis var. purpurascens community, L: Artemisia princeps var. orientalis community, M: Humulus japonicus community, N: Zoysia japonica community, O: Inperata cylindrica var. koenigii community, P: Agropyron tsukushiense var. transiens community, Q: Juncos effusus var. decipiens community, R: Rumex crispus community, S: Persicaria hydropiper community. The vegetation characteristics of riversides was recovered in the surveyed results according to river·stream basin, in other words, 10 communities in the upper river·stream riparian, 15 communities in the middle river·stream riparian, 10 communities in the down river·stream riparian. The Phragmites japonica community in the upper and Phragmites communis community in the down was analyzed by common community of the 6 river·stream riparian, respectively, but none in the middle. The standing profile of vegetation across 6 river·stream was seen stepwise Phragmites japonica community, Salix gracilistyla community, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens community, shrub community by natural waterway in the upper, Salix gracilistyla community, Phragmites communis community, Rumex crispus community, Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, Humulus japonicus community in the middle, Phragmites communis community in the down. The differences of distributional featurs of vegetation emerged from the riparian of the 6 river·stream, but don't from the 6 river·stream.

This study was performed to investigate the discrimination of Angelica gigas, Angelica acutiloba and Angelica sinensis on the treatment of chromaticity and colorfastness. Angelica gigantis root has been used as a Korean traditional medicine for the treatment of woman disease. Natural dyes give us many great benefits, including diversified color, but no pollution. These studies were carried out acetate iron, dichloride copper and alum with a mordant to ramie fabric. The ramie fabric was dyed with Angelica gigas, Angelica acutiloba and Angelica sinensis. The results of experiment showed as follows: In discrimination by dyeing, the colors of Angelica acutiloba and Angelica sinensis were very similar, but that of Angelica gigas was different. There were no differences among colors of materials using non-mordant. But dyeing with iron acetate and copper dichloride were showed dark in Angelica gigas than other angelica species.

This study was conducted to investigate the optimal plant growth regulator level for the shoot formation of Lycium chinense Mill. In vitro plant propagation was developed for leaf explants of boxthorn. Leaf explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with cytokinins (BA and 2-iP) alone. Plants were successfully regenerated through in vitro culture by using leaf explants of boxthorn grown in the field. After 4 weeks of culture, 58% of shoot formation had developed from the leaf explants. The shoot formation rate of 'Jangmyeong' was highest followed by 'Myeongan', ;Cheondae', and 'Bullo'. The use of 0.2mg/L BA was critical for enhanced production of shoot formation and resulted in 58% of the culture producing shoot formations. Regenerated plantlets transplanted to pots were developed and successfully acclimatized to greenhouse.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of sta-green and activated carbon on leaf and stem growth of Agastache rugosa as it is affected by different amounts of sta-green and activated carbon. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Growth characteristics including plant height and leaf number were the highest when treated with 30% of sta-green. The weight of fresh leaf and stem of Agastaches rugosa was very low in control. Also, fresh weight of Angelica acutiloba was higher in 10% treatment of activated carbon. However, when the plants were grown in 10% activated carbon. all these promoters were the biggest. Sta-green and activated carbon can be utilized as a soil conditioner in agricultural crop areas.

The study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the popular isoflavone-rich soybean 'agakong' in upland and in drained-paddy fields. Analysis revealed no significant variation in terms of plant height, number of seeds per pod, number of nodes, and 100-seed weight between the two cropping system. Number of pods was significantly higher in paddy field(234.2kg 10a-1) compared to those harvested in the upland field, which was later manifested on the yield where paddy soybeans obtained 278.1kg 10a-1 whereas upland only obtained 179.3kg 10a-1. This observed difference in yield was attributed to the observed higher amount of N in the paddy soil (0.907%) as compared to the upland soil (0.458%). In terms of nutritional content, protein and phytic acid contents were the only parameters that showed significant differences while oil, sugar, reducing power and fatty acids were all comparable in paddy and filed condition. Protein content was higher in upland soil (47.4%) than that of the paddy (44.9%) soil. On the opposite, phytic acid was higher in paddy (2.90%) than in upland (1.09%). This study showed that the yield of soybean is generally a factor of soil N, drained-paddy field production of soybean is comparable to upland-filed production with the benefit of increasing phytic acid content while maintaining its nutritional value.
