Rice ratooning is the cultural practice that easily produces secondary rice from the stubble left behind after harvesting the main crop. ‘Daol’ is an extremely early growing rice variety. Planting this variety early allows for an additional ratoon harvest after the primary rice harvest. The plant growth and yield of ratoon rice were very low compared to those of main rice. Protein, amylose content, and head rice rate were higher in ratoon rice than in main rice. The distribution by the rice flour particle size of main and ratoon rice was similar. The damaged starch content in ratoon rice was relatively high at 6.1%. Ratoon rice required a longer time and higher temperature for pasting than main rice. Compared to the original rice, peak viscosity (PV), hot paste viscosity (HPV), cool paste viscosity (CPV), and breakdown (BD) were very low, and setback (SB) was high. As a result of analyzing the gelatinization properties of main and ratoon rice using differential calorimetry, it was found that the onset (To), peak (Tp), and conclusion (Tc) of ratoon rice starch were processed at a lower temperature than those of main rice. The gelatinization enthalpy of both samples was similar. The distribution of amylopectin short chains in ratoon rice was higher than that in main rice.

European and Turkish rice varieties were analysed to identify the traits associated with low-temperature germination. The aim of the study is to develop new rice varieties that can use these traits to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in rice fields. The average low temperature germination ratio (GR) in the European and Turkish rice varieties was 89.0±14.1%. The speed of the germination rate (SG) in Korean early maturing varieties, ‘Jopyeong’ and ‘Baekilmi’ was 1.3 and 3.5, respectively, whereas the European and Turkish varieties had a SG of 6.6. In terms of germination energy (GE) by the date, the European and Turkish varieties started germination within 4 days, while ‘Jopyeong’ and ‘Baekilmi’ began to germinate after 8 and 10 days, respectively. The mean germination time (MGT) for the European and Turkish varieties was 9.9±1.2 days. Between 4 to 10 days after inoculation, the germination velocity coefficient (GVC) for the European and Turkish varieties increased moderately from 2.6 to 5.3. After 10 days, the GVC rose rapidly from 7.0 to 12.0. ‘Jopyeong’ and ‘Baekilmi’ had slower germination rates compared to the European and Turkish varieties, in which the GVC increased moderately to 3.2 and 2.3, respectively, between 7 and 9 days after inoculation. The average mesocotyl elongation ability was 4.0±0.4 cm, with a range from 1.3 cm to 7.3 cm.

This study was conducted to determine the acceptability of locally accepted japonica rice varieties among 53 farmers in Bohol and 38 farmers in Nueva Ecija, who were further classified into adopters and non-adopters of the GUVA japonica rice variety. Snowball sampling was made on farmer adopters/cooperators of a high-quality seed multiplication and dissemination project in the said provinces. The farmer respondents were mostly male whose ages ranged from 30 to 80 years and with farm sizes from 0.5 to 16 hectares. The farmers’ rice variety and usage were assessed by comparing the GUVA japonica rice variety with their commonly planted indica rice variety based on its agronomic characteristics, yield and income potential, and seed purity concerns. The barriers/hesitations to adoption of the GUVA japonica rice variety, namely seed availability, varietal information, and market potential, must be complemented with the suggested improvements on the variety together with factors that convince the farmers for committed use of this variety. Researchers together with partner agencies must put a lot of thought on how to integrate and synchronize these concerns so that the farmers can adopt GUVA japonica rice. Interest check on the usage of GUVA japonica rice variety in rice production as well as suggested improvements were solicited as the basis for continuous R&D pursuits that would eventually promote and adopt the GUVA japonica rice variety from these provinces.

Tomato is one of the major widely cultivated crops around the world. The leaf area is directly related to the total amount of photosynthesis, which affects the yield and quality of the fruit. Traditional methods of measuring the leaf area are time-consuming and can cause damage to the leaves. To address these problems, various studies are being conducted for measuring the leaf area. In this study, we introduced a model to estimate the leaf area using images of tomatoes. Using images captured by a camera, we measured the leaf length and width and used linear regression analysis to derive the leaf area estimation formula. Furthermore, we used a Neural Network (NN) for additional analysis to compare the accuracy of the models. Initially, to verify the reliability of the image data, we conducted a correlation analysis between the actual measurement data and the image data, which showed a high positive correlation. The leaf area estimation model presented 23 estimation formulas. We used regression analysis to estimate the coefficients of each model and also used employed an artificial neural network analysis to derive high R-squared (R2) values and low Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values. Among the estimation formulas, the ninth model showed the highest reliability with an R-squared value of 0.863. We conducted a verification experiment to confirm the accuracy of the selected model, and the R-squared value was 0.925. This study confirmed the reliability of data measured from images and the reliability of the leaf area estimation model using image data. These methods are expected to be an important tool in agriculture, using imaging equipment for measuring and monitoring the crop growth.

Aligned with the recent shift in fruit consumption trends, there is a growing increase in the cultivation of these fruits. Thus, various types of small fruits, including blueberries, have recently been introduced and cultivated in Korea. According to the data, there has been a notable uptick in blueberry farming, in stark contrast to the decline in cultivation of black raspberries, black chokeberries, and blackcurrants. New varieties of blueberries continue to be introduced and cultivated, aligning with the recent consumption trends and are expected to be consistently cultivated in the future. Despite the decrease in the other berries, health benefits associated with all berries have ignited growing consumer interest, resulting in domestic and international market expansion. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of identifying plant varieties that are well-suited to Korea's climatic conditions, validating efficient cultivation strategies, and establishing robust distribution networks to foster sustainable development in the berry industry.

Radish is an important root vegetable in the world, and many cultivars have been developed with various molecular marker systems to identify these cultivars. Recently developed markers for radish cultivar identification require only 11 primer pairs, but they still use conventional PCR with different annealing temperatures and time-consuming gel electrophoresis. To improve the genotyping method, we applied touchdown PCR with 11 primers with M13 tails among 105 radish cultivars. Touchdown PCR successfully generated amplicons in all 11 M13-tailed primers with a condition of annealing temperature starting from 55℃, decreased by 1°C and 33 cycles at 53°C. The 11 M13-tailed primers followed by fragment analysis produced 71 amplicons, which produced more amplicons than gel electrophoresis that produced 23 amplicons. Especially, simple sequence repeats produced more amplicons, 12 on average, than the other marker types. The present study requires less effort and provides more accurate results compared to genotyping using gel electrophoresis. Besides, a database can be established using digitized genotyping results among radish cultivars.

Herbicide-resistant transgenic rapeseed (TG rapeseed) was developed by inserting phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT, bar), a modified gene from the soil bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus, into the genome of a conventional variety of rapeseed (Youngsan). The TG rapeseed used for the test was confirmed to express the PAT gene by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunostrip. Feeding tests were conducted with Cyprinus carpio to evaluate the environmental risk of TG rapeseed, including the herbicide resistant gene. C. carpio was fed 100% ground rape suspension, TG rapeseed, or non-genetically modified (GM) counterpart rapeseed (Youngsan). As a result, the feeding test showed no significant differences in the cumulative immobility or abnormal response between C. carpio samples fed on TG rapeseed and non-GM counterpart rapeseed. The 48 h-LC50 values of the TG rapeseed and the non-GM counterpart rapeseed were 3,376 mg/L (95 % confidence limits: 3,169 - 3,596 mg/L) and 2,682 mg/L (95 % confidence limits: 2,267 – 3,123 mg/L), respectively. The rape NOEC (no observed effect concentration) value for C. carpio was suggested to be 625 mg/L. Based on these results, there was no significant difference in the toxicity for non-target organisms (C. carpio) between the TG rapeseed and non- GM counterparts.

This study was carried out to verify the effect of increasing the ambient temperature around apple trees by directly blowing warm-air under the slender spindle apple training system using an agricultural warm-air blower and ducts used in plastic house cultivation to develop late frost damage reduction technology during the blooming season. The temperature increase effect around apple trees owing to the operating warm-air blowing ducts was most evident at a height of 30 cm from the ground surface. At this height, the branch ducts made of Oxford fabric and Solartex showed a raised ambient temperature of about 2.6oC and 1.1oC, respectively. However, the temperature rising effect at a height of 130 cm and 230 cm from the ground surface owing to the operating warm-air blowing ducts was not distinct compared to that in the control. The effect of raising ambient temperature around apple trees through the operation of warm-air blowing ducts was found to be greater as the ambient temperature did not severely drop below the freezing temperature. Damage to the central flower in the apple inflorescence at the pink stage was significantly reduced in the warm-air blowing ducts made of Oxford fabric (42.8%) compared to that in the control (73.2%). However, the damage to other flowers except the central one was not significant compared to that in the control. The fruiting rate of the central and other flowers in the apple inflorescence depending on the operating warm-air blowing ducts was significantly increased compared to that in the control. The fruiting rates of central and other flowers depending on the ducts materials, such as Oxford fabric, and Solartex, and that of the control were 38.3%/82.7%, 31.4%/82.7%, and 0.5%/61.1%, respectively. In conclusion, in the case of open-field apple orchards, if the warm-air blowing duct is installed close to the laterals where frost damage mainly occurs in the slender- spindle dense cultivation system, the damage caused by late frost in the vicinity of blooming time can be reduced to some extent.

This study was conducted to identify the optimal root zone temperature for paprika cultivation, with an aim to increase the heating and cooling energy efficiency and prepare for extreme weather conditions. The greenhouse air temperature was maintained at 20oC and 25oC during the daytime (12 hours) and at 18oC during the nighttime (12 hours). The plant height did not show any significant differences between the treatment with air temperature and root zone temperature. The root length was highest under an air temperature of 25oC with root zone temperatures of 25oC and 30oC, and it was the lowest at 15oC. The leaf number was the highest when the root zone temperature was adjusted to 25oC and 30oC across all air temperatures. The leaf area increased with higher root zone temperatures, but considering the compactness of the seedlings, a root zone temperature of 25oC was found to be the most effective. The fresh and dry weight of the shoot increased with higher root zone temperatures at an air temperature of 25oC, while the fresh and dry weight of the roots tended to be higher when the root zone temperature was adjusted to 25oC and 30oC across all air temperatures. The compactness was most effective when the root zone temperature was adjusted to 20oC and 25oCC across all air temperatures. Based on the above results, adjusting the root zone temperature to 25oC at an air temperature of 25oC was found to be effective for the early growth of Paprika. The results of this study suggest that not only can growth be promoted through the regulation of root zone temperature, but it also contribute to the establishment of root zone temperature control technology, which can prevent an excessive drop and rise in the root zone temperature.

In 2006, Cambodian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI) bred a high-quality tomato ‘Neang Pich’ variety. Since ‘Neang Pich’ is susceptible to Sclerotium rolfsii (S. rolfsii), it is severely affected the production major tomato growing regions. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of seven S. rolfsii tolerant rootstocks on growth and yield in graft cultivation of ‘Neang Pich’ tomato. ‘Neang Pich’ seedlings were used as scion and non-grafted control. Six eggplant genotypes (‘2017053’, ‘2017062’, ‘17CJVC2’, ‘No. 80’, ‘VI041979A’, ‘VI041996’) and a commercial tomato variety (‘Hulk’) were used as rootstock. The grafted and non-grafted tomatoes were grown in a plastic greenhouse and open field. The survival rate of plants did not differ between plastic greenhouse (80.2%) and open field (79.5%). The top and root fresh weight of plants grown in a plastic greenhouse increased by 77% and 11% compared to the open field and the dry weight increased by 48% and 10%, respectively. The top (309 g) and root (18.9 g) fresh weight, and the top (90.5 g) and root (6.39 g) dry weight depending on rootstock were the highest in plants grafted onto ‘2017062’. The yield of tomatoes in a plastic greenhouse (19.5 MT/ha) was 65% higher than that of open field (11.8 MT/ha). The yield of tomatoes depending on rootstock were the highest in ‘2017062’ (17.8 MT/ha). The effect of cultivation practice and grafting on pH and sugar content (oBrix) of the fruit was non-significant difference (p0.05). The scion diameter, top fresh weight, fruit weight and yield (MT/ha) were significant difference (p0.05) in the interaction effect between tomato cultivation practices (plastic greenhouse and open field) and rootstock.

To identify some significant phenotypic characteristics of maize(zea mays) seeds, we have obtained Red, Green, Blue(RGB) digital image data from 82 recombinant inbred lines. Based on the collected image data, their morphological and color data were analyzed, and seven significant parameters were selected, including area, perimeter, length, width, circularity, roundness, and surface texture. The extracted RGB data were converted into color hex codes to visualize the representative colors of the seeds. These visualized colors were categorized into six groups: gray, yellowish white, yellow, grayish orange, purple, and brown. The results of maize seed phenotypic analysis using the RGB digital images in this study will serve as a useful tool for constructing a database of seed phenotyping database and establishing a standardized classification system.

The economy of Tanzania relies on agriculture as the main economic activity, because agriculture provides both food and income to the population of the country, especially the rural households. Improvement of market access to crops also increases the productivity. Therefore, in this study, descriptive statistics and statistical analysis of the probit model were used to analyze the factors that determine the market accessibility of small-scale farmers in Chemba, Tanzania. Cross-sectional data collected by the systematic sampling method for 200 corn peasants in Chemba, Tanzania were used. As a result of probit regression analysis, it was found that access to improved seeds and technology had a positive statistically significant effect on the accessibility to the market, while the age of the head of the household, production cost, distance to the market, and household size had a negative statistically significant effect. Therefore, in this study, policy establishment and implementation are recommended. A policy needs to be considered to reduce the transaction costs that eventually allows the farmers to increase the accessibility to markets, enables small-scale farmers to participate in cooperatives, lowers input costs and provides educational programs on quality products to increase their competitiveness in the marketplace.

Gray leaf spot caused by Stemphylium spp., is a major disease of tomatoes, and it threatens its cultivation worldwide, especially in warm and humid areas. This study was conducted on 223 tomato germplasm conserved at the National Agrobiodiversity Center to select the resources resistant to the gray leaf spot pathogen strain previously isolated in Korea, using a bioassay and genotypic analysis of the resistance gene (Sm). Two weeks after inoculation with Stemphylium lycopersici, the disease index (rated on a scale of 0-4) of gray leaf spot was assessed in detached tomato leaves. The results showed that 22 resources were resistant, with a disease index of 0-1. Additionally, 65 genetic resources were found to be moderately resistant, with a disease index between 1.0 and 2.0. Subsequently, Hybridization Probe Melting (HPM) analysis of the 22 resistant genetic resources confirmed the genotype of the gray leaf spot resistance gene (Sm). Among them, 20 genetic resources showed a homozygous resistant genotype. The resources selected in this research may contribute to the breeding of new tomato varieties resistant to gray leaf spot and may serve as a basis for further genotypic analysis studies.

Myanmar's soil is diverse in terms of climate and topography, including the central dry zone, hilly and upland areas, deltas, and coastal zones. As a result, crops such as rice, sesame, groundnuts, green gram, and maize are grown as major crops. Some soils are difficult to cultivate due to topographic constraints and permanent forests. Soil fertility was classified according to the physical and chemical characteristics. Based on these data, classification, and a soil survey, a soil map was made by the Land Use Division of Myanmar Agriculture Service. Myanmar's soil was classified into 24 soils according to the WRB classification by FAO/UNESCO, and soil maps were produced at the national level and for each of the 14 states and divisions. This study sought to contribute to efficient land use and sustainable agricultural development in Myanmar by understanding Myanmar's agricultural conditions and soil types.

This research was conducted to analyze the relationship between the induction time of runners and the growing degree days for domestic strawberry cultivars, 'Sulhyang' and 'Arihyang'. Runners were induced at 15-day intervals over five periods, starting from late April to early June, and the study compared the number of runner formations and temperature changes for each period while it also investigated the plantlet quality on the transplanting date. Based on back calculations from the transplanting date of September 18th, 'Sulhyang' required induction from late April to early May to achieve 70-day-old plantlets and from late April to mid-May for 60-day-old plantlets. On the other hand, 'Arihyang' needed induction from late April for 70-day-old plantlets and from late April to early May for 60-day-old plantlets. To secure about 20 daughter plants, the growing degree days needed to be around 1,000°C, and a delay in runner induction led to a delay in formation of daughter plants. The relationship between growing degree days and runner formation was expressed as the following quadratic equations: for 'Sulhyang,' y = 9E-06x2 + 0.0124x – 2.4806 (R2 = 0.9696), and for 'Arihyang,' y = 1E-06x2 + 0.0192x – 2.9274 (R2 = 0.9431), and these equations showed high correlations. The crown diameter on the transplanting date was thickest in mid-May for 'Sulhyang', and it tended to increase with delayed runner induction for 'Arihyang'. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the number of daughter plants and growth characteristics varied depending on strawberry cultivars and the timing of runner inducement time. The relationship equations derived through measurements of growing degree days can be used as the fundamental data for reasonable production of daughter plants in the future.

This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of domestic 'Sulhyang' strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) seedlings and to analyze their relationships in order to develop a growth prediction model. Fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf area were measured to validate the newly developed growth model. The relative growth rate (RGR) of ‘Sulhyang’ seedlings’ dry weight was an average of 0.026 g·g-1·d-1, and it increased to 0.066 g·g-1·d-1 on the 49th day after transplanting (DAT). The relationship between DAT and RGR was represented as RGR (dry weight)(g·g- 1·d-1) = 0.0392/(1 + exp(–(DAT – 34.9940)/5.8662)). The crop growth rate (CGR) was an average of 0.060 g·m-2·d-1, and it increased to 0.211 g·m-2·d-1 on the 70th DAT. The relationship between DAT and CGR was calculated as CGR (dry weight)(g·m-2·d-1) = 0.1293/(1 + exp(–(DAT – 49.3917)/6.0928)). The relationship between shoot fresh weight (y) and shoot dry weight (x) per plant showed a linear relationship of y = 4.3189x + 0.7812 (R2 = 0.9976). Fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf area with respect to DAT and cumulative temperature increased exponentially, and sigmoid curve models were developed based on these data. The model with the highest coefficient of determination was found for the relationship between shoot dry weight (y) and cumulative temperature (x), represented as y = 14.2285/(1 + exp(–(x – 1590.1295)/377.8112)) (R2 = 0.9715). The results of this study can be utilized as valuable information for establishing a systematic management system for seedling production using strawberry cutting propagation methods. For the development of a more precise growth prediction model in the future, it is necessary to analyze and apply a wider range of growth indicators and meteorological factors related to strawberry seedlings.

The term ‘lodging’ in agriculture is usually used when the crops fall from their upright position before harvesting. Various factors may be responsible, including inherent weaknesses in the stem, resulting from low lignin content or small root systems.Weather, such as strong winds or rains, will also likely increase lodging. Insect or disease damage can also weaken the plants, and cultural practices, such as fertilization, irrigation, and cultivation techniques, may increase the risk. Most of the research studies on lodging have been undertaken on cereal crops, but this is also an issue with many vegetable crops, and especially those that require mechanized harvesting. In this review, the issue of lodging in solanaceous vegetable crops is discussed, with an emphasis on the key risk factors and potential areas for future research that can identify damage mitigation strategies.

This study aims to distinguish between various Ethiopian durum wheat varieties based on their genetic identity using chemical and morphological characterization of seeds. Combinatorial employment of five chemical tests on seeds showed marked qualitative variation among the test varieties, with high discriminatory potential noted for the standard phenol test, followed by the modified phenol and iodide tests. The modified phenol test was instrumental in further discriminating between the varieties that were not identified using the standard phenol test. Unlike the iodide and phenol tests, the NaOH and KOH tests did not show significant variation among the varieties. These results underscore the efficacy of phenol and iodide tests in differentiating between durum wheat varieties. Although the morphological traits were advantageous in seed characterization, they lacked discriminatory power compared with that of the chemical tests. This study concludes that a single test is inadequate for varietal discrimination; rather, a combination of chemical tests can augment the discriminatory potential.
