In the present study, a severe outbreak of Sclerotium rot on Korean melon(Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Makino) observed in Jinju, Korea in August of 2014 and 2015 is reported. The fruit rot disease on the surface of Korean melon fruit appeared as water soaked lesion followed by the development of large rotten areas with abundant white mycelial growth. Abundant white mycelial mats with globoid and white to brown sclerotia(1-3 mm) were also developed on stems near the soil line, and infected plants withered. The fungal pathogen was isolated on potato dextrose agar(PDA) and formed white colonies with numerous sclerotia on PDA. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, 1-3 mm in size, and white to brown in color. The mycelium formed typical clamp connection. These measurements and taxonomic characteristics were most similar to those of Sclerotium. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the complete internal transcribed spacer rRNA gene region confirmed that the fungal isolates were Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. Koch’s postulates were supported by pathogenicity tests conducted on fruit. Based on mycological characteristics, pathogenicity tests, and molecular identification, the fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a Sclerotium rot caused by S. rolfsii on Korean melon in Korea.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of site quality on allometric equations, stem density and biomass expansion factors(BEFs) in a 20-year-old Machilus thunbergii plantation. The study site was located in Jindo county, Chollanam-do, southern Korea. Total 14 trees were harvested from the good site(tree height: 6.7 m) or poor site(tree height: 4.6 m) assumed by tree height growth. Allometric equations, stem density and biomass expansion factors were calculated from the sampled trees. Site-specific allometric equations of tree components were significant(p<0.05) with diameter at breast height(DBH). Also, generalized allometric equations could be applied to estimate tree biomass regardless of the difference of site quality because of no significant effect on slope of site-specific allometric equations. Aboveground tree biomass was significantly higher in the good site(81.0 Mg ha-1) than in the poor site(46.3 Mg ha-1). Stem density was not significantly different between in the good site(0.65 g cm-3) than in the poor site(0.67 g cm-3), whereas aboveground tree and leaf BEFs were significantly higher(p<0.05) in the poor site(aboveground: 2.23; leaf: 0.42) than in the good site(aboveground: 1.82; leaf: 0.23). The results indicated that aboveground Biomass and Biomass expansion factors of a Machilus thunbergii plantation were affected by site quality.
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activities and the contents of antioxidant compounds in extracts derived from 23 medicinal crops. Dried plant materials were extracted by 80% methanol and the extracts were used to experiment. The levels of total phenolic compounds were much higher in Oenothera biennis, Houttuynia cordata, Cedrela sinensis, Rhus javanica, Artemisia annua, Reynoutria sachalinensis, and Dendropanax morbifera compared with other crops. On the other hand, the total phenolic compound levels in Carthamus tinctorius, Polygonum multiflorus, Ginko biloba, Solanum nigrum, and Saposhnikovia divaricata were relatively low. The total flavonoid contents were highest in H. cordata, followed by D. morbifera, A. annua, A. continentalis and O. biennis. DPPH activity was significantly higher in A. annua, R. javanica, C. sinensis, D. morbifera and O. biennis, and ABTS activity was significantly higher in R. javanica, C. sinensis, O. biennis, R. sachalinensis, A. annua, and D. morbifera than other plants. These results suggest that O. biennis, A. annua, R. javanica, D. morbifera, and R. sachalinensis can be utilized as food additives and natural antioxidants due to their strong antioxidant activity.
This study was carried out to elucidate suppressive effect of loess-sulfur complex and neem oil on the development of leaf mold and fungus gnat in no-pesticide tomato farming system. Since tomato leaf mold occurred 15%, neem oil, loess-sulfur mixture and boscalid(47%, water soluble chemicals) 2,000 times, 1,000 times and 2000 times diluted was treated three times, respectively. When disease incidence of tomato leaf mold was investigated 20 days after final treatment, it was recorded 17% in neem oil treatment(control efficacy 40%) and 12.3% in loess-sulfur mixture treatment(control efficacy 59%). Among three control agents used, Boscalid(47%, water soluble chemicals) showed the best control effect against tomato leaf mold. When neem oil was diluted 250 times, 330 times and 500 times and treated in coir bag infected with fungus gnat, its control values was 69, 59, and 55%, respectively. There was no significant difference among three treatments. As a result, 500-fold diluted neem oil treatment is considered a good measure to control fungus gnat in the field condition.
The objectives of this study were to select the seeds of Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae genotypes in terms of superior with bioactive compounds content and to inform sophisticated data for developing the high value-added products. We evaluated to aspects of the antioxidant activity, polyphenol content, and flavonoid contents in seeds from two vegetable family. This study was aimed to examine the potential of pre- and post-harvest treatment of chitosan and high pCO2 on the shelf-life of oriental melon fruit. Post-harvest dipping treatment of chitosan and high pCO2 did not bring any significant effect on the freshness of fruit in general, even at 1% of chitosan. Unlike post-harvest treatment, pre-harvest spray of chitosan significantly increased fruit firmness and firmness increase was higher in double sprays than single one. The internal quality such as soluble solid content and acidity was not altered by chitosan spray. No additional effect of high pCO2 with pre-harvest treatment of chitosan was found. Double sprays of chitosan showed significant effect on keeping visual appearance through delaying the incidence of skin browning. There was a potential of pre-harvest chitosan treatment on the shelf-life increase of oriental melon fruit and double sprays were better than single spray. However, high pCO2 seemed not to be effective on the storability of oriental melon fruit.
The purpose of this study is to find methods of enhancing arboretum’s competitiveness and suggest efficient ways in making other arboretum afterwards by grasping decision factors that make people visit an arboretum operating in Korea. For this study it was conducted monova and discriminant analysis, multiple regression analysis. I researched the relationship between satisfaction and visitor’s characteristic, and then found there are some differences only in revisitors, though other factors had nothing to do with results. The satisfaction of facility and tour effect is higher in revisitors compared with first visitors. In the gender aspect, women were satisfied with the distinctive things more highly than men among five lower factors of satisfaction. Also, in the age group aspect, the overall satisfaction and satisfaction in the scenary were ranked higher from 20 to 30 than from 40 to 50. The findings will provide imformation on the satisfaction of the arboretum visitors and enhance arboretum’s competitiveness.
Hanwoo young bulls are selected based on performance test using the weight at 12 months and pedigree index comprising marbling score. Pedigree index was not based on the progeny tested data but the breeding value of the proven bulls; resulting a lower accuracy. The progeny testing of the young bulls was categorized into testing at farm and at the test station. The farm tested data was difficult to compare with those from test station data. Farm tested bulls had different slaughter ages than those for test station bulls. Therefore, this study had considered a different age at slaughter for respective records on ultrasound traits. Records on body weight at 12 months, ultrasound measures at 12 and 24 months(uIMF, uEMA, uBFT, and uRFT), and carcass traits(CWT, EMA, BFT, and MS) were collected from steers and bulls of Hanwoo national improvement scheme between 2008 and 2013. Fixed effects of batch, test date, test station, personnel for measurement, personnel for judging, and a linear covariate of weight at measurement were fitted in the animal models for ultrasound traits. The ranges of heritability estimates of the ultrasound traits at 12 and 24 months were 0.21-0.43 and 0.32-0.47, respectively. Ultrasound traits at 12 and 24 months between similar carcass traits was genetically correlated at 0.52-0.75 and 0.86-0.89, respectively.
In the swine industry, growth related traits are important economic traits directly linked to profitability. Representative growth traits include daily gain, back fat thickness, and carcass weight. This study was conducted to search for positional candidate genes associated with the carcass weight through a genome-wide association study(GWAS) using suggestive levels of statistical thresholds in pigs. As a result of the genome-wide analysis of the associations with carcass weight, the single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) markers with suggestive significance were identified in 1 SNP marker on chromosome 2(ALGA0015365) and 1 SNP marker on chromosome 4(ALGA0023678). We could select positional 2 candidate genes, located close to the SNP markers with suggestive significance levels. The SNP markers in adjacent to the 2 genes(LOC100519538, LOC100737583) may provide basic data regarding the marker-assisted selection for the carcass weight trait in pigs.

Three models(Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Logistic model) were considered for analyses. The estimated growth functions for Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Logistic models were Wt=781.0e−2900e−0.09521t,Wt=943.3(1−0.650e−0.06231t)3 and Wt=665.7(1+13.475e−0.18260t)−1 , respectively. The estimated average infection points(ti) showing maximum growth rate were 352.034, 338.181 and 430.987 day of age, respectively, using on Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Logistic model. Average gain at inflection for Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Logistic model were estimated 0.878, 0.833 and 0.986 kg/day, respectively. The estimated weight at inflection for Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Logistic model were 301.5, 279.5 and 332.9 kg, respectively. In the study, the von Bertalanffy model having a variable point of inflection fitted the best for data of Holstein cows.
The physicochemical properties of dry wine produced from domestic kiwifruit according to production year from 2008 to 2012 were studied. pHs of wine were from 4.02(F wine, production year 2009, sterilized) to 4.11(D wine, production year 2012, non-sterilized) and their acidities were lowest in D wine(0.79%) and highest in F wine(1.18%). All the wines have the same soluble solids of 8 °brix and 12% of alcohol, respectively. The reducing sugar was lowest in A wine(production year 2008, non-sterilized) and highest in D wine. The lactic acid was detected as a main organic acid and the free sugar was detected only fructose. As main flavor components, ethyl acetate and 1-pentanol were detected and their sum of 80~90% and a small amount of phenylethyl alcohol which providing rose-like aroma was also detected. The contents of soluble phenolics were highest in D wine(1.07 g/L) and lowest in C wine(0.80 g/L), corresponding to the antioxidant activity was highest found in D wine according to their soluble phenolic contents.
In this study, a energy recovery ventilation system was applied to the pig model, intake and exhaust duct were installed at a height of top(2.1 m), middle(1.25 m) and bottom(0.4 m). In each of the 9 test sites, one test was performed from 10:00 to 18:00, optimal temperature exchange efficiency and temperature distribution were analyzed. In order to analyze the effect of the energy recovery ventilation system, the temperature of 31 points(4 points of the ventilation system and 27 points in the pig house model) was measured from 10:00 to 18:00. The test that showed the highest heat exchange efficiency was the configuration of middle intake duct and top exhaust duct, which was 75.44%. The test that showed the most uniform distribution was the configuration of middle intake duct and bottom exhaust duct. These results will be utilized to optimally design feeding environment of actual pig houses and to reduce fuel cost.
To evaluate performance of the experimental pick-up type pulse crop harvester for harvesting sprout bean, its pick-up and discharging grain loss ratios, grain quality such as whole grain ratio, damaged grain ratio, unthreshed grain, and foreign material ratio in grain tank, germination rate of threshed grain, and theoretical field capacity of the harvester were analyzed according to engine speeds of 2000, 2400 and 2800 rpm and harvesting speeds of 0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 m/s. It is considered that the harvester showed optimum performance at the engine speed of 2800 rpm and the harvesting speed of 1.0 m/s, and then average pick-up grain loss ratio of 2.7%, discharging grain loss ratio of 0.5%, whole grain ratio of 99.3%, damaged grain ratio of 0.2%, unthreshed grain ratio of 0.0%, foreign material ratio of 0.2%, and germination rate at 8 days after seeding of 72.8% were shown. It is considered that the harvester has lower grain loss and higher grain quality than the imported bean combines. And also as it could harvest 3 rows of cut and dried sprout bean crop width of which was about 2 m, its effective field capacity was estimated for about 50 a/h.
Even though the red pepper is one of the most important seasoning vegetables in Korea, the volume of usage of domestic red pepper has shrunk due to decrease in consumption. Thus, researchers and government officers need to seek for solutions to extend usage of domestic red pepper of food processing industry which consumes considerable amount of it. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the factors of the usage of domestic red pepper in food processing companies using cross-tabulation analysis and multiple regression model and to find the implications for promoting the usage of domestic red pepper. The results of studies present that specific characteristics of food processing companies affect the usage of domestic red pepper, including size of sales, shape of company, food product processed by company, human organization for purchase of food material, registered trademark, and support of government. This study also suggests that government needs to offer more supporting programs to sauce industry and improve the system of program to promote the usage of domestic red pepper.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP), an inhibitor of ethylene action, on fruit quality and incidence of physiological disorders during simulated marketing period in early-season Asian pear(Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) ‘Noksu’. Flesh firmness was decreased abruptly at 15 days after shelf-life in control fruits. which showed less than 10.7N, although those of 1-MCP-treated fruits were kept high value(>30.4N) during 20 days of shelf-life. ‘Noksu’ pears did not show any considerable differences in quality indices such as soluble solids content, titratable acidity during the shelf-life regardless of 1-MCP treatment. The reduction of ethylene production level by 1-MCP treatment did not appeared in ‘Noksu’ pear. Meanwhile, 1-MCP treated ‘Noksu’ pears showed significantly low respiration rate during shelf-life. Also, 1-MCP treatment blocked the incidence of physiological disorders including core browning, internal browning, water soaking and mealiness symptom during shelf-life. Consequently, we concluded that the 1-MCP treatment effectively inhibited the incidence of physiological disorders and extended the shelf-life for 10 days in early-season Asian pear ‘Noksu’.
Deutzia paniculata Nakai(Hydrangeaceae) is a Korean endemic species with very restricted distribution in Gyeongsang-do, Korea. The plants with limited range of distribution are highly affected by various natural and artificial environmental disturbances resulting habitat loss and decline in population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of D. paniculata based on the degree of germination in different soil types and shading under green house condition in Korea National Arboretum in the preparation to conserve from future extinction. Altogether seven soil types: native(control), forest soil, bed soil, peat moss, peat moss + perlite(2:1), peat moss + perlite + vermiculite(2:1:1), peat moss + perlite(3:1) with three replica each were used for the experiment. In each soil types the germination rate, survival rate, growth amount, leaf area, LMA(Leaf Mass per Area), SPAD value, and the amount of chlorophyll with the shading conditions(non-shading, 25% shading, and 50% shading) were measured. The result indicated that the highest germination(88%) was found in the bed soil. The survival rate was more than 90% in the non-shading and 25% shading conditions; however, it lowered to 10% in the 50% shading condition. The observation of plant height, leaf number, leaf length and width of seedling in bed soil showed the highest growth was in non-shading treatment, and the lowest growth was in soil 50% shading treatment. The chlorophyll content of each treatment in bed soil with non-shading treatment was 1.64(a=0.77, b=0.87) whereas it was 1.54(a=0.69, b=0.84) in 25% shading treatment. The average LMA for each treatment was 0.45(mg/cm2). We found the strong negative correlation between the shading levels and the number of leaves, leaf width, leaf length, leaf area, plant height and SPAD. Overall result indicated that D. paniculata greatly favored bed soil and non-shading condition in the greenhouse. Through this study we have established a series of processes regarding the appropriate degree of soil and shading conditions for growth and germination of D. paniculata. Thus, these processes can be applied in various research fields for preservation and proliferation of the species.
