This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense (C. japonicum)extract on serum level of hormones from induced osteoporosis by ovariectomized rats. Two month-old rats were ovariecto-mized (OVX), remained untreated for 8 weeks, and were subsequently administered C. japonicum (200㎎/㎏) every day for8 weeks. We examined the effects of treated C. japonicum on ovariectomy-related changes in Insulin-like Growth Factors(IGF), Insulin-like Growth Factor binding protein-3 (IGBF-3), Estrogen, Calcium, and Phosporus. After 8 weeks, the serumlevels of IGF-I, -II, and IGFBP-3 were higher presented as compared to the other two groups (P<0.05), in the C. japonicumextract treatment on OVX rats. There were differences between OVX and C. japonicum extract treated OVX rats in serumlevels of Ca2+, but Ca2+ levels for the normal group was higher than for the other two groups. The C. japonicum extractincreased both serum IGFs and IGFBP-3 levels on induced osteoporotic rat by ovariectomized. Thus, these results revealedthat the C. japonicum extract is a possible role for improvement of osteoporosis induced-ovariectomized rats and has a greatpotential as an alternative tool for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Characteristic of seed for Sageretia thea fruits collected from the habitat of harvest season in Jeju and theirgermination ratio in different temperatures were considered. The average weight was 0.2g, average diameter was 7.2㎜,average length was 6.5㎜, and size distribution range was 5.1~10.0mm. The number of seeds per fruit was 1.8, and 1000grain weight was 7.77g with diameter of 3.7㎜ and thickness of 1.7㎜ in size. The fruit maturation was investigated to befrom April 27 to June 1, when the best maturation period was about a week, May 11 to May 18. Also, the fruits grown onMay 4 to May 11 were seen to have the bigger in transverse size and weight with a tendency of the earlier maturation datehas the greater the number of seeds. S. thea seeds pretreated for 24 hours at 50℃ were not germinated, while most of thosepretreated for 24 hours at 4℃ were successfully germinated at any degree of temperature (except at a temperature of 10℃).Particularly, the highest germination rate of 55% was made at 15℃, and plumule and radicle were best grown within thetemperature range of 25℃.

This study was conducted to improve the postharvest storage techniques of managing and storing seeds, totest qualities and viabilities of the seeds and to examine the germination rate and the protein expression of Achyranthesjaponica Nakai. The seeds collected from different areas of Je-Cheon and Gwang-Ju were stored with different temperaturesand durations. Two plant growth regulators and two seed priming were treated to investigate their effect on the germinationrates and the days required for germination. The weight of one hundred seed collected in Gwang-Ju was heavier than thosein Je-Cheon. Seed length collected in Gwang-Ju was also longer about 5.12㎜ than those in Je-Cheon about 4.90㎜ andseed width was longer in Gwang-Ju than those in Je-Cheon. The rates of seed germination in two different collection areaswere higher about 2.9 to 13.0% in Gwang-Ju compared to those in Je-Cheon. Comparing its rates with the storing tempera-tures and durations, they were not clearly different in between 4℃ and 25℃ and they also were gradually decreased withgetting longer storing durations. The germination rates treated by plant growth regulators were higher with GA3 than thosewith Kinetin. The highest seed germination rate was appeared at 50 ppm of GA3. Comparing its rates with different seedpriming, they were relatively higher with KNO3 than those with PEG6000. In protein expression patterns between before thegerminating and after the germinating of seeds, more and clear bands were appeared in the seed after the germination com-pared to those before the germination of seeds, especially 10~20kDa. These results showing more and clear bands weremore clearly appeared in Gwang-Ju compared to Je-Cheon. Comparing the protein expression with plant growth regulatorsand seed primings, GA3 was better expression than those with Kinetin and KNO3 was better than those with PEG6000. Moreand clear bands were closely related to the germination rates of seeds and more detailed studies would be required.

In the present study, we investigated biological activities of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves in order to evaluate thepossibility as a natural biomaterial. The 80% ethanol extract and its subsequent fractions of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves wereprepared using several solvents with different polarities. The extraction yield was 33.4, 36.6, 25.2, 18.7, 5.8 and 5.8% in etha-nol extract, aqueous, butanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, chloroform fractions, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction(661.38㎎/g), butanol fraction (396.68㎎/g) and 80% ethanolic extract (239.54㎎/g) has higher total polyphenol contentsthan other fractions. The antioxidant activity was detected in ethanolic extract, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. Theethyl acetate fraction showed the highest levels of DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50, 4.77㎍/㎖). Moreover, the ethylacetate fraction significantly inhibited production of NO in LPS-stimulated macrophage RAW 264.7 cells without cytotoxic-ity. These results indicate that 80% ethanol extract and its fractions of Rosa davurica Pall. leaf, especially ethyl acetate frac-tion, have the properties of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation, suggesting leaf of Rosa davurica Pall. may be a candidate fornatural and functional materials.

Shading and soil environment are the main factors of growth and yield in ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A.Meyer). Ginseng yield is directly related to survival rate because of increased missing plant for their growing period. Underfield conditions, diseases and pests significantly affect plant survival rate. We evaluated the seedling establishment, growthand ginsenoside of the ginseng plants, under controlled management conditions in a plastic greenhouse, when their treatedwith different types of organic matter. Ginseng seeds were sown at a rate of three seeds per hole, and the seeding space mea-sured 10㎝×15㎝. Compared to the control, treatment of cattle manure vermicompost (CMV) was shown to increaseseedling establishment and decrease ginsenoside content. Root weights of plants treated with CMV were higher than those ofplants treated with other types of organic matter. In addition, seedling establishment of 2-year-old ginseng plants wasdecreased when it was compared to that of 1-year-old ginseng plants. Our results indicated that organic matter type and ratewere associated with seedling establishment, growth characteristic and ginsenoside content in greenhouse of ginseng direct-sowing culture.

This study was to investigate anti-skin wrinkle effect of Agastache rugosa Kentz extracts by extraction processes. In the comparison of the effect of the solvent extraction, the extracts by 70% ethanol (EE) showed better biological activitiesthat those by hot water. Therefore, further fermented Agastache rugosa was applied to 70% ethanol extraction process(FEE). FEE showed higher DPPH scavenging activity of 62.98% than EE’s 62.71% at 1.0㎎/㎖, but there was no significant.Elastase inhibition was measured 23.0% from FEE at 1.0㎎/㎖. Cytotoxicity showed the highest 16.26% from FEE, thisvalue is safe in the cell experiment. Collagen production showed 113.1ng/㎖ from FEE, on the other hand EE was measured77.4ng/㎖ in adding 1.0㎎/㎖. MMP-1 production was observed 1398pg/㎖ from FEE and EE was measured1632pg/㎖. These results were found the highest antioxidant and anti-wrinkle effect. As a result, it was also confirmed thatanti-skin wrinkle activities of the Agastache rugosa Kentz extract was correlated with anti-oxidant activities.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the photosynthesis response and leaf characteristics of Peucedanum japonicum growing in forest farming. The experiment was performed by leaf mold (pine tree and chestnut tree) and shading levels (0%, 35%, 50% and 75% shading). Light relative intensity was 100% (full sunlight), 60.3% (35% shading), 35.1% (50% shading), and 17.4% (75% shading) respectively. Light response curves of pine-leaf mold and chestnut-leaf mold were the highest in control (full sunlight) and these were getting lower in the higher shading level. Photosynthesis capacity and light saturation point were indicated higher in chestnut-leaf mold within the same shading level. As the shading level increased, maximum photosynthesis rate decreased. And apparent quantum yield was not indicated statistically significant difference from all treatment. Leaf area, leaf length and leaf width were significant higher in 35% shading and control under chestnut-leaf mold in all treatment. As the shading level increased, LAR (leaf area ratio), SLA (specific leaf area) and SPAD value decreased in pine-leaf mold and chestnut-leaf mold. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, P. japonicum is judged better growth and higher yield by maintaining 35% shading (relative light intensity 60%) under chestnut-leaf mold in forest farming.

Edible berries are rich in anthocyanins and phenolic acids, compounds that possess antioxidant, anti-inflam-matory, and other biological activities. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of five berries including acaiberry(Euterpe oleracea Mart.), Aronia/black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), black cur-rant (Ribes nigrum L.), and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) were assessed. The Aronia G (prepared by GreenField s.c.)exhibited the highest antioxidant activities as shown in total phenolic (138.81㎎ CAE/g), flavonoid (3.68㎎ QE/g), andanthocyanin (20.31㎎/g) contents compared to the other berries. It also showed the strongest scavenging activities such asDPPH (69.69㎎ vitamin C/g) and ABTS radical scavenging activity (757.79µmol trolox/g). Aronia G exhibited strong ferricreducing antioxidant power (553.98µmol vitamin C/g), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (820.92µmol trolox/g). Inaddition, black currant and Aronia showed stronger inhibition of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulatedRAW 264.7cell than the other berries. According to the above results, the Aronia and other edible berries have notably highlevel of antioxidant activities and they could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants.
