The contents of index components in 5 medicinal crops cultivated at different heights in Andong area. Thecontents of allantoin in Dioscorea batatas Decne and catalpol in Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz were not differentby cultivation heights (100~200m). But the contents of index components in Astragalus membranaceus and Angelica acutilobaKitagawa were higher in samples cultivated at elevated heights. At 700m of heights, the contents of formononetin andastragaloside I in Astragalus membranaceus were 1.20 and 201.2㎍/g, respectively. The contents of decursin and nodakeninin Angelica acutiloba Kitagawa were 68.3 and 4.20㎎/g, respectively. Thus Astragalus membranaceus and Angelica acutilobaKitagawa are recommended to be cultivated in higher altitude.

In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects by Alopecurus aequalis Sobol on thelipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production by RAW 264.7 cell line. Consistent with these observations,DS reduced the LPS-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) atthe protein levels in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) andinterleukin-6 (IL-6) were also reduced by DS. Moreover, LPS increased expression phosphorylation of IκBα, but DS showedinhibitory effect by reducing LPS-inducible p-IκBα expression level. These results suggest that the down regulation of iNOS,COX-2, TNF-α, and IL-6 expression by DS are achieved by the downregulation of NF-κB activity, a transcription factornecessary for pro-inflammatory mediators, and that is also responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects.

The present study investigated an ethanol extract (SSB) of a mixture of three medicinal plants of Vitisamurensis, Aralia cordata, and Glycyrrhizae radix for possible neuroprotective effects on neurotoxicity induced byAmyloid β protein (Aβ) (25-35) in cultured rat cortical neurons and antidementia activity in mice. Exposure of cultured cor-tical neurons to 15μM Aβ (25-35) for 36h induced neuronal apoptotic death. At 1-30㎍/㎖, SSB inhibited neuronal death, elevation of intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca²+]i), and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by Aβ(25-35) in cultured cortical neurons. Memory impairment and increase of acetylcholinesterase activity induced by intra-cerebroventricular injection of mice with 16nmol Aβ (25-35) was inhibited by chronic treatment with SSB (25, 50 and100㎎/㎏, p.o., for 8 days). From these results, it is suggested that antidementia effect of SSB is due to its neuroprotectiveeffect against Aβ (25-35)-induced neurotoxicity and that SSB may have a therapeutic role in preventing the progression ofAlzheimer’s disease.

These studies were conducted to discriminate Cynanchum wilfordii, C. auriculatum, Metaplexis japonica, andPolygonum multiflorum by morphological characters. Cynanchum wilfordii, C. auriculatum, and Metaplexis japonica(Ascle-piadaceae) were easily distinguished from Polygonum multiflorum by twining stem to the left, producing opposite leaves, having laticiferous stems and leaves at cutting cross-sectionally, and lacking lignification of the stem. Four species had differ-ent morphological characters of flower. Comparing four species to fruit type, three species of Asclepiadaceae had follicle, while Polygonum multiflorum had achene with three wings. Follicle shape was lanceolate, narrowly lanceolate, and widelylanceolate in C. wilfordii, C. auriculatum, and Metaplexis japonica, respectively. Whereas seed color of four species was darkbrown similarly, seed shape and 1,000 seed weight were useful characters to discrimate between three species ofAsclepiadaceae and Polygonum multiflorum. Shape and color of root were thickened and yellowish brown in C. wilfordii andC. auriculatum. They were thin and long and white in Metaplexis japonica, and fusiform and reddish brown in Polygonummultiflorum. They would be useful characters to distinguish Cynanchum spp., Metaplexis japonica, and Polygonummultiflorum, however, impossible characters to discriminate between C. wilfordii and C. auriculatum.

This study was designed to evaluate antioxidant activity of Curcuma longa L. leaves treated by ultra highpressure extraction. Curcuma longa L. leaves was subjected to 5,000 bar for 5 and 15 min at 25℃ The highest phenolics andflavonoids content was observed in the treatment of high pressure extraction for 15 min (308.28㎍/㎎, 124.33㎍/㎎). TheDPPH scavenging activity was 82.34% at 1.0㎎/㎖ of Curcuma longa L. leaves treated by ultra high pressure process for 15min. The highest SOD-like acitivity of Curcuma longa L. leaves (1.0㎎/㎖) was observed at ultra high pressure extractionfor 15 min (67.54%). The high pressure extraction significantly increased the contents of phenolics and flavonoids and alsoenhanced the antioxidant activity. These results provide useful information for enhancing biological properties of Curcumalonga L. leaves.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic compost on the growth and rootyield of Angelica gigas Nakai with organic cultivation. After fertilizing the soil with organic fertilizer, the dry weight ofliming fertilizer showed a slow change, while microorganism fertilizer decreased about 29% until 20 day after fertilizing. At110 days after fertilizing, microorganism fertilizer decreased more than liming fertilizer. Liming fertilizer decomposedslowly, while microorganism fertilizer decomposed early on rapidly but gently after 20 days in decomposed rate of organicfertilizer. Dried root yields per 10a of A. gigas were not significance between 277.6㎏ in conventional fertilizer and 277.7㎏,280.5㎏ in N 1.5, N 2.0 times of microorganism fertilizer. Decursin and decursinol angelate contents in A. gigas were9.08~9.07% from N 1.0 and N 1.5 times in liming fertilizer, and 7.94~8.12% from N 1.5 times and N 2.0 times in microor-ganism fertilizer, compared to 7.31% of conventional treatment.

This study was to investigate the improvement of immune activities of the extracts from Codonopsis lan-ceolata by stepwise steaming process and high pressure process. The phenol contents was 8.742㎍/㎎ which was higher thanthat from conventional extraction using 70% ethyl alcohol at 80℃ for 24hours. All of extracts at a concentration of 1.0㎎/㎖showed relatively low cytotoxicity on human normal kidney cell (HEK293) in range of 16 19%. The immune B and T cellgrowth was improved by extracts using the steamed and high pressure precess of C. lanceolata up to 180×10⁴cells/㎖ and96×10⁴cells/㎖, respectively. The extract prepared also greatly increased the secretion of both IL-6 and TNF-α from thestepwise steamed and high pressure process. This results can conclude that stepwise steamed and high pressure processeffectively released active biomaterials which could important role in enhancing immune activity in the body.

This study was carried out to investigate the difference of the content of soil chemical components and growthcharacteristics in six years old ginseng affected by application of decomposing plant residues in paddy-converted field. Theresults show that aerial parts of ginseng are no difference between press cake (PC) 200㎏/10a and control but subterraneanparts of ginseng PC 200㎏/10a, especially quantity related root fresh weight and tap root diameter, are statically about 1.6times heavier and about 1.2 times thicker than the ginseng control. Furthermore, the survival rate of PC 200㎏/10a is67.1% rise significantly compare with the control 50.7%. But compared with the PC 200㎏/10a and the PC 400㎏/10a,ginseng root growth and survival rate of PC 400㎏/10a get worse and that increase physiological disorder occurrence ratethan PC 200㎏/10a. Even though there are no significant differences between the ginseng of decomposing plant residuesexcept press cake treatment and the ginseng of control in growth characteristics, it does tend to increase the survival rateand decrease the physiological disorder occurrence rate in most fertilizer treatment except for RSC 2ton/10a, RSC 4ton/10a and RH 4kL/10a. Noted that EC is highly increased and exceeded 1.7ds/m in RSC 2ton/10a, RSC 4ton/10a and RH4kL/10a. It would be caused physiological disorder in many ways and affected ginseng growth characteristics, survival rate.

The Ponciri fructus immaturus (Poncirus trifoliata Rafinesque) has been used in oriental medicine for uterinecontraction, stomachache, abdominal distension and cardiovascular diseases. Two main compounds, poncirin and naringinwere successfully analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and carried out method validation accordingto ICH guideline. A successful resolution and retention times were obtained with a C18 reversed phase column, at an 1㎖min−¹ flow rate, with a gradient elution of a mixture of methanol, water and acetonitrile. Poncirin and naringin showed goodlinearity (R²>0.999) in relatively wide concentration ranged. The recovery of each compound was 95.81~101.48% withR.S.D. values less than 1.0%. The application of ultrasound-assisted extraction was shown to be more efficient in extractingponcirin and naringin from Ponciri fructus immaturus. The predicted optimal poncirin and naringin yield were poncirin2.15%, naringin 1.65% under an extraction temperature of 40℃, an extraction time of 10 min in a solvent of 70% methanol.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the early growth and root development characteristics ofAtractylodes japonica container seedling. Experiment was performed by light intensity (100%, 60%, 25% and 10% of fullsunlight). Height was surveyed well under 25% of full sunlight (overall 11.013.0%). Root collar diameter was the highest inthe full sunlight (7.52㎜). It was the highest fresh weight (1.52g, 0.92g, 0.90g and 3.34g) under 25% of full sunlight, rootdry weight was getting higher in the higher light level and the highest in the full sunlight (0.13g). Total root length, rootproject area, root surface area and root volume were the highest under 25% of full sunlight (434.7㎝, 17.4㎠, 54.7㎠,0.55㎤, respectively) and the lowest under 10% of full sunlight. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. japonica isjudged nicely by maintaining 25% of full sunlight, excepting 10% of full sunlight. And light levels during the early growthare overly important to improve early growth.
