Cosmetic activities of the leaves of Curcuma longa L. were compared according to different drying methods, to expand the use of the by-products of Curcuma longa L. The highest extraction yield of 29.4% was obtained from vacuum drying process (VD), whose value was very close to 29.2% from freeze drying process (FD). Relatively lower extraction yield were observed as 24.5% and 25.3% from the raw leaf (RL) as control and hot air drying process (HD). The cytotoxicity was observed lower FD and VD than RL and HD. It shows that cytotoxicity was closely related to cosmetic activities such as tyrosinase and melanin inhibition activities by showing much better cosmetic activities of the extracts from both FD and VD than those from the RL and HD. It was interesting that was differences of the cosmetic activities and cytotoxicity between FD and VD, which implies that VD method should be a more efficient process than FD method in terms of drying time and operation costs: 6 hours vs 24 hours and 3-5 times higher extraction costs in drying. It was observed that VD is more excellent dry method than others. This result could be utilized to effectively dry other soft plant biomass.

Complex of mulberry extract (CME) is composed of extracts of mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit, mulberryleaves and black beans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). In this study, we investigated prevention effects of CME on degenerativearthritis. The SC50 value of DPPH radical scavenging by CME was 158.49±11.35㎍/mL. We found that CME significantlyreduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) and protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in RAW 264.7 cells whichwere activated by LPS. Experiments using animal model of degenerative arthritis showed that CME (400㎎/㎏ bodyweight) inhibited the production of TNF-α (77.5%) and IL-1β (95.0%). Furthermore, it was observed that CME reduced to85.9% of paw edema induced by carrageenan. These results suggest that CME could improve degenerative arthritis.

This study was conducted to select and develop effect of eco-friendly organic materials for the eco-friendly prevention of Anthracnose occurred in the ginseng. Anthracnose on ginseng is occurred by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and the crop damage is severe especially from July to August after rainy season. The test results showed that control effect by test products materials on the three years ginseng and four years ginseng field was lower in eco-friendly organic materials than that of chemical pesticide. However, the control effect of bordeaux mixture was higher with 71.3% and 73.8% levels than those of mineral matter, microbial agent, and developed plants extract mixtures (Eugenol, Curcumin, Wood vinegar, etc). On the other hand, three types of developed plants extract mixtures (3 types) showed control effect in a range of from 58.1% to 63.6% against Anthracnose which was higher as compared with plant extract alone and sodium silicate regardless of ages of ginseng. The results of this study would attribute in verifying the control effect of eco-friendly materials against Anthracnose for ginseng through investigating antimicrobial compounds contained in the plants body. Also, it would be used as control method against Anthracnose occurred in ginseng by judging the right control time through monitoring occurrence of disease.

The six polysaccharide fractions were prepared by chromatographic procedure from the hot water extractsof the aboveground parts of Astragalus membranaceus. These six polysaccharides from aboveground parts of Astragalusmembranaceus Bunge were tested for gut-mucosal immune activity and acute toxicity. In a view of molecular weight, the sixfractions were estimated to be 75000, 88000, 129000 and 345000 Da, respectively. Component sugar analysis indicated thatthese fractions were mainly consisted of galactose (46.3~11.8%) and arabinose (35.4~9.9%) in addition to glucose, rhamnose, fucose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucuronic acid and galacturonic acid. Among the six major purifiedpolysaccharides, AMA-1-b-PS2 showed highest bone merrow cell proliferation and lymphocyte of Peyer's patch stimulatingactivity. It may be concluded that intestinal immune system modulating activity of aboveground parts from Astragalusmembranaceus Bunge is caused by polysaccharides having a polygalacturonan moiety with neutral sugars such as arabinoseand galactose. In single oral dose toxicity study, no differences were observed between control and treated groups in clinicalsigns. The results indicated that lethal dose 50 (LD50) of water extracts from Astragalus membranaceus-aboveground partswas found to be higher than 5000㎎/㎏/day in this experiment. From the above results, we may suggest that Astragalusmembranaceus-aboveground parts might have useful as a safe material for functional food and pharmaceutics.

Maesa japonica (Thunb.) is an evergreen shrub belonged to the Myrsinaceae family, which was discovered in2006 in South Korea. And, its biological functions have not been well studied. In this study, we determined the antioxidantactivities, α-glucosidase inhibitory effects and antimicrobial activities of methanol extract and the solvent fractions of M.japonica leaves and twigs. The highest antioxidant activity obtained by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scav-enging assay and reducing power assay was found in the ethylacetate fraction of twigs methanol extract, which contained thehighest level of total phenolic compounds compared to the other fractions. In addition, ethylacetate fraction of twigs extractexhibited higher inhibitory activities against α-glucosidase (IC50=0.8㎍/㎖) compared to the IC50 of the buthanol fraction(IC50=16㎍/㎖) of leaves extract. It showed antimicrobial activities against Bacillus atrophaeus and Bacillus subtilis subsp.Spizizenii. Although the data is too limited, the current study is the first report on biological functions of M. japonica.

This study was carried out to produce more Parasenecio firmus in forest farming. In order to achieve thispurpose, it was surveyed the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of P. firmus. Relatively light intensity was controlledby 100%, 60%, 30% and 5% of full sunlight. Height was the highest under 5% of full sunlight. Shoot diameter was the high-est in full sunlight. Fresh weight (leaf, stem, root and total) and dry weight (leaf, root and total) were the highest under 30%of full sunlight. S (leaf+stem)/R (root) ratio was the lowest under 30% of full sunlight and the highest under 5% of full sun-light. In leaf characteristics, leaf area, SLA and LAR were getting higher in the lower light level and the highest under 5% offull sunlight (176.1㎠, 420.5㎠•g−1 and 123.5㎠•g−1). Especially, leaf area was surveyed higher under 30% of full sunlightin the next. Leaf thickness was getting lower in the lower light level and the lowest under 5% of full sunlight (overall0.14~0.24㎜). As a result of surveying the whole experiment, P. firmus grows well under 30% and 5% of full sunlight inforest farming.

Endophytes are microorganisms that live in the internal tissues of plants without harming the host plants. In this symbiotic relationship, the host plants provide nutrients and shelter to the endophytes, in turn, endophytes can promote the growth of host plants and act as a biological control agents against plant pathogens. Plant-microbe interactions like this are noted for natural methods for sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. However, in spite of the infinite potential, there are only a few reports on the endophytes present in ginseng. In this study, we isolated and identified the endophytes from Panax ginseng seeds and evaluated the biological activities (IAA production ability, nitrogen fixation ability, phosphate solubilization capacity, siderophore production ability, and antifungal activities) of the endophyte isolates. Eight different endophytes were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Most of the endophytes have antibiotic and plant growth promoting (PGP) activities. Particularly, PgSEB5-37E have the highest antibiotic activity, both PgSEB5-37B and PgSEB5-37H have high PGP traits such as an abilities to produce IAA, solubilize phosphate and fix nitrogen. These results indicated that the endophytes from P. ginseng seeds may have applicable value to many industries. In order to use the isolated endophytes, quantitative analysis and field tests are needed to be performed.
