The purpose of this study is to illustrate the characteristics of soil organic matter (SOM) and partition coefficient (KDOC). Humic substances (HS) from eight soils of varying properties were extracted by two different methods. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was stabilized in 22hrs. The ratio of UV absorbance at 465nm and 665nm (E4/E6 ratio) for HS were similar pattern for 8 soils. The extraction with increasing pH increased dissolution of SOM. The ratio of organic carbon (OC) associated with HA and FA (the HA:FA ratio) was varied widely in accordance with the soils and was highly correlated to OC content(%) of the soils. In modeling metal speciation in soils and soil solutions, assumptions that all DOC in soil solution is associated with FA and that HA:FA ratio in SOM is constant have been made. The results of this study indicate that the validity of these assumptions is questionable. By sequential pH extraction, the KDOC showed in a linear correlation with pH.

The purpose of this research is development of radar data assimilation observed at Jindo S-band radar. The accurate observational data assimilation system is one of the important factors to meteorological numerical prediction of the region scale. Diagnostic analysis system LAPS(Local Analysis and Prediction System) developed by US FSL(Forecast Systems Laboratory) is adopted assimilation system of the Honam district forecasting system. The LAPS system was adjusted in calculation environment in the Honam district. And the improvement in the predictability by the application of the LAPS system was confirmed by the experiment applied to Honam district local severe rain case of generating 22 July 2003. The results are as follows: 1) Precipitation amounts of Gwangju is strong associated with the strong in lower level from analysis of aerological data. This indicated the circulation field especially, 850 hPa layer, acts important role to precipitation in Homan area. 2) Wind in coastal area tends to be stronger than inland area and radar data show the strong wind in conversions zone around front. 3) Radar data assimilation make the precipitation area be extended and maximum amount of precipitation be smaller. 4) In respect to contribution rate of different height wind field on precipitation variation, radar data assimilation of upper level is smaller than that of lower level.

Aquatic plants grow in water with photosynthesis and purify water quality as taking organic and inorganic matter in water. Polluted water in stagnant stream channel where nutritive salts load is great can be purified by activities of aquatic plants. Aquatic plants should be fixed to bed easily to plant and sustainable environment is needed. So in this study, Mattress/Filter system is suggested to plant aquatic plant in stagnant stream channel. In the result of study, coverage of Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia which planted in mattress was 78%, 62% and 82% and numbers of species in each mattress system were 7, 11, 3. The evenness index of each mattress system was 0.86, 0.91 and 0.79 and diversity index of each mattress system was 1.67, 2.18 and 0.87. Removal rates of phosphorus at Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia which planted in mattress were 68.7%, 62.7%, 55.3% and removal rates of nitrogen of them were 79.8%, 74.7%, 64.9%. The removal rate of nitrogen was greater than phosphorus at all system and both removal rates were greater at Phragmites australis than at Zizania latifolia and at Typha angustifolia the rate was the least. Removal rates of PO4-3, NH4-N, NO3-N at Phragmites australis were 57.4%, 52.8%, 47.8% and at Zizania latifolia were 82.6%, 77.2%, 67.5% and at Typha angustifolia were 80.6%, 73.7%, 64.3%. It seems that removal effect is great by the planted mattress system.

Revetment Mattress/Filter is the porous structure filled fillers in meshed structure so that it can use the fillers of various sizes and form various pores. The porous structure of the Mattress/Filter increases drainage so that it decreases the energy and velocity of flow therefore the tractive force is decreased and the erosion of revetment is mitigated. The filler of Mattress/Filter uses gravels, waste concretes and slags so that the surface is rough and the roughness coefficient increases and the increase of the roughness coefficient decreases flow velocity and tractive force. On the other hand Mattress/Filter and vegetation are combined so that the increase of roughness coefficient and flow velocity still more progress therefore the effect of decrease of tractive force is increased after a few months have passed since the Mattress/Filter is constructed so that the vegetation is developed and be stabilized. The vegetation channel of Mattress/Filter is set up and the inspection comes into operation by varing flowrate and vegetation spacing to examine these characters of the Mattress/Filter. The coefficent of flow velocity U/U*' is decreased exponentially as vegetation desity aH' or λ is increased and the coefficient of friction f is increased as vegetation desity aH' is increased but decreased as the coefficent of flow velocity U/U*' is increased. The effective tractive force F0 is decreased exponentially as the vegetation desity aH' is increased. From the inspection the results are obtained that the porous and vegetation structure of the revetment Mattress/Filter system increases the coefficient of friction of revetment so that flow velocity and effective are decreased therefore greatly contributes the stability of the revetment.

In order to grasp physical characteristics of Ganajin Bay receiving the effluents from land, a comprehensive field surve)'has been conducted at the north of Wando and Gogeumdo in 2002. Water temperature was most high in September while most low in December. A high temperature in September was inferred to have caused by the dispersion of warm fresh water with favor of a dominant wind in autumn. However, salinity and sigma-t in situ was most low in September while most high in December. A low salinity (or density) in September turned out to reflect the influence of a dense rainfall in summer. Water temperature, salinity and density at the surface layer were lower than those at the bottom layer, except for December. Their horizontal profiles suggested the influence of effluents such as Tamjin River. Particularly, time series of water temperature acquired near the sluice and at the north channel of Wando tended to rise at the flood flow but fall at the ebb flow in accordance with the tide. The form ratio of the tide in the study area was 0.31~0.32 and the amplitude of the tide appeared to increase towards the west. Northeastward or southwestward flows prevailed in this area but the residual flows were all northeastward with a magnitude of 3~4cm/s.

High concentration of chlorophyll a occurred around the Ulleung Warm Eddy off Ulleung Island in the East Sea of Korea in spring season. The abnormal distributions of chlorophyll a were captured by satellite remote sensing and measured field data. The temporal and spatial scale of the abnormal distributions were around 20 days and 50km diameter off Ullung Island. The anomalies were quantified by estimated chlorophyll a derived from OCM and SeaWiFS ocean color data from 2000 to 2004. The origin of abnormal high concentrations was estimated by this study. It was that suspended material discharged from the Nakdong River and the coastal water located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula moved to northeastern coast, and then moved to off Ullung Island. The high chlorophyll a concentrations including inorganic materials were accumulated by anticyclonic eddy such as the Ullung Warm Eddy around Ullung Island in the East Sea of Korea in spring season.

The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments, using five advanced oxidation processes (AOPs): UV/H2O2, fenton, photo-fenton, UV/TiO2, UV/TiO2/H2O2. The photodegradation experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed photoreactor equipped with an immersed 32 W UV-C lamp as light source. Initial decolorization rate and COD removal efficiency were evaluated and compared. The results obtained showed that the initial decolorization rate constant was quite different for each oxidation process. The relative order of decolorization was: photo-fenton > UV/TiO2/H2O2 > fenton > UV/H2O2 > UV/TiO2 > UV > H2O2. The relative order of COD removal was different from decolorization: photo-fenton ≒ UV/TiO2/H2O2 > UV/TiO2 > fenton > UV/H2O2. The photo-fenton and UV/TiO2/H2O2 processes seem to be appropriate for decolorization and COD removal of dye wastewater.

An effective technique of sludge separation is required for excess sludge of sewage or wastewater plant. The separation of bulking sludge of paper manufacturing plant was studied using DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) system. The effects of parameters such as nozzle type, A/S(air/solid) ratio, pressure, injection time of pressured water and saturation time were examined. The results showed that the best nozzle type was flat which had small orifice hole. The optimum A/S ratio and pressure were 7.070×10-3(recycle ratio of pressured water : 20%) and 5 atm, respectively. Injection times of pressurized water around 20-25 sesc and flotation time of 30 min appeared to be optimal for the DAF operation. The order of performance of packing was 18 mm > 22 mm > 32 mm.

The simultaneous analysis of multi-residual pesticides was developed using a gas chromatography (GC) method. In this study, a simple and reliable methodology was improved to detect 154 kinds of pesticides in ginseng extract sample by using a liquid-liquid extraction procedure, open column chromagraphy and chromatographic analysis by GC electron capture detector (ECD) and GC nitrogen-phosphorus detector (NPD). The 154 kinds of pesticides were classified in 4 groups according to the chemical structure. The extraction of pesticides was experimented with 70% acetone and dichloromethane/petroleum ether in order, and cleaned up via open column chromatography (3×30㎝) packed with florisil (30g, 130℃, 12hrs). The final extract was concentrated in a rotator evaporator at 40℃ until dryness. Then the residue was redissolved to 2㎖ with acetone, and analyzed by GC-ECD and GC-NPD. The applied concentration of pesticides was over 1~10㎍/㎖. The recovery tests were ranged from 70.7% to 115.2% with standard deviations between 0.3 and 5.7% of the standard spiked to the ginseng extract sample (Group Ⅰ~Ⅳ). The limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.001 to 0.099㎍/㎖ (Group Ⅰ~Ⅳ). The 9 kinds of pesticides were not detected. The developed method was applied satisfactory to the determination of the 154 kinds of pesticides in the ginseng extract with good reproducibility and accuracy.

Heat transfer and flow characteristics in a pipe in which the rotating cutting tool for boring a underground pipe without digging were considered in this study. The amount of heat generation due to the friction between the rotating cutter and pipe wall, mixing flow of air and water injected to cool down are the two important factors to design the boring machine. Computational fluid dynamics analysis using the Eulerian mixture model and the standard k-ε turbulence model was used to analyze the complex phenomena in a pipe during the process. Results show that pipe wall temperature decreased with increasing the cooling water inlet velocity. It is also shown that pipe wall temperature was lowered when the cutter rotation speed was increased until 600 rpm. There was no further cooling effect over 600 rpm.
