Spaceflights results in the reduction of immune status of human beings and increase in the virulence of microorganisms, especially gram negative bacteria. The growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae is enhanced by catecholamines and during spaceflight, elevation in the levels of cortisols occurs. So it is necessary to know the changes in physiology, virulence, antibiotic resistance and gene expression of K. pneumoniae under microgravity conditions. The present study was undertaken to study effect of simulated microgravity on growth, morphology, antibiotic resistance and cross stress resistance of K. pneumoniae to various stresses. The susceptibility of simulated microgravity grown K. pneumoniae to ampicillin, penicillin, streptomycin, kanamycin, hygromycin and rifampicin were evaluated. The growth of bacteria was found to be fast compared with normal gravity grown bacteria and no significant changes in the antibiotic resistance were found. The bacteria cultured under microgravity conferred cross stress resistance to acid, temperature and osmotic stress higher than the normal gravity cultured bacteria but the vice versa was found in case of oxidative stress.
The MFFn(Mass First Flush) was analyzed for various rainy events(monitoring data from 2008 to 2009) in Transportation area(Highway, National road, Trunk road). Estimated MFFn using SWMM was evaluated by comparison with observed MFFn. MFFn was estimated by varying n-value from 10% to 90% on the rainy events. The n-value increases, MFFn is closed to '1'. As time passed, the rainfall runoff was getting similar to ratio of pollutants accumulation. The result of a measure of the strength of the linear relationship between observed data and expected data under model was good (R2=0.89).
Pollutants runoff loads by volume showed Highway 26.6%, National road 44.8%, Trunk road 35.0% at the MFF20(20% by total runoff). A case of MFF30, pollutants runoff loads by volume showed Highway 40.2%, National road 54.3%, Trunk road 46.8%.
According to the results, Initial precipitation basis were Highway MFF30, National road MFF20, Trunk road MFF30 when the Non-Point source control facilities set up.
The purpose of this study was to identify the irrigation intervals and the amount of suitable growing substrate needed to achieve the desired shallow-extensive green roof system during a dry summer in Korea. In terms of treatment, three types (SL, P6P2L2, P4P4L2) with varying soil mixture ratios and two types (15 cm, 25 cm) with varying soil depths were created. The results have been analyzed after measuring growth and soil water contents. The difference of growth by treatment was significant in terms of green coverage, height, leaf width and photosynthesis. In measurement of chlorophyll content, no difference was detected when measured against soil depth. According to the growth measurement of Zoysia japonica with respect to differing soil mixture ratios in the 15 cm-deep treatment, a statistical difference was detected at the 0.05 significance level in photosynthesis. In case of green coverage, height, chlorophyll content and leaf width, no statistical significance was observed. In case of the 25 cm-deep treatment, a statistical significance was observed in height and photosynthesis. In terms of green coverage, chlorophyll content and leaf width, no statistical significance was detected. In comparisons of soil moisture tension and soil water contents, the irrigation interval and amount were 8 days and 14.9 L in the SL (15 cm) treatment, respectively. The irrigation interval showed for 10 days a 1.3-fold increase, and the irrigation amount was 27.4 L 1.8-fold more than SL (25 cm), respectively. For P6P2L2 (15 cm) treatment, the irrigation interval and amount were 12 days and 20.7 L, respectively. However, an irrigation interval under P6P2L2 (25 cm) was for 15 days 1.3 times longer than P6P2L2 (15 cm), and an irrigation amount of 40 L was 1.9 times more than that under P6P2L2 (15 cm). In P4P4L2 (15 cm) treatment, it was indicated that the irrigation interval was 15 days, and the irrigation amount was 19.2 L. It was not needed to irrigate for 16 days under P4P4L2 (25 cm) treatment during the dry summer and the longest no-rain periods. The irrigation interval and amount under P4P4L2 were 1.8-fold and 1.3-fold, respectively, more than SL treatment as affected by soil mixture ratio. Comparatively P4P4L2 had more 1.3-fold and 0.9-fold in irrigation interval and amount more than P6P2L2. Therefore, it can be noted that different soil depth and soil mixture ratios had a significant effect on the irrigation interval and amount.
Slope is the geographic factor reflecting the 3-dimensional features of basin and it can be considered as the important geomorphological factor which governs the morphology of basin and the dynamics of water movement. In this study the approach to the 3-dimensional structures of basin is attempted with statistical analysis of local slope which can be defined and measured in easy and objective manner by means of DEM. As a result local slope is confirmed to be a highly variable spatial factor in basin. And distribution map of local slope based on spatial autocorrelation length in this study would be a useful tool in the further research of hydrology and geomorphology.
This work is to study the variations of adsorption characteristics of binary vapor according to packing system of double-layer bed by fixed bed experiment. Breakthrough curves of single and binary vapor composed of acetone and benzene on single-layer and double-layer adsorption bed composed of activated carbon (AC) and silica-aluminar (SA) were compared. Adsorptions of binary vapor on double-layer bed were influenced by the differences of surface area between adsorbents as well as the polarity difference between adsorbent and adsorbate. The roll-up phenomenon of acetone vapor was happened by replacement with competing adsorption between acetone vapor and benzene vapor on AC bed, but it was not happened on SA bed because acetone vapor and benzene vapor had less difference in affinity with SA bed. The breakthrough times of acetone vapor and benzene vapor on AC/SA double-layer bed were three times and 1.4 times larger respectively than on SA/AC double-layer bed, the differences of breakthrough times were relatively larger than the equilibrium adsorption capacities according to packing system of double-layer bed.
Three embankments, namely Changpo, Bokkil and Guil, in Chunggye Bay were investigated to assess the influence of environmental changes to phytoplankton size structure, distribution of species and standing crops. Three stations was sampled near at each embankment in Nov. 2006, Feb. 2007, May 2007 and Aug. Phytoplankton were classified into net-size (>20㎛) and nano-size (<20㎛). In summer, the freshwater discharge seemed to have influence in the decrease of salinity and in the increase of turbidity, ammonium and phosphorus concentrations. Chl a concentration and phytoplankton abundance in Feb. 2007 were observed to be generally higher in all stations compared to other periods. Net-size phytoplankton was observed to be higher in Feb. 2007 and May 2007 compared to nano-sized phytoplankton. However, there was shift in phytoplankton composition in Nov. 2006 and Aug. 2007. Phytoplankton under seven class (Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae, Euglenophyceae) was identified during the study period. It was found out that the major phytoplankton class was Bacillariophyceae. Phytoplankton was more diverse in autumn compared to any other season. Cyanophyceae was increased in summer. In rainy season, change in physical factors (salinity, transparency) seemed to have more influence on phytoplankton growth compared to inorganic nutrients.
Air pollution inventories are aggregated around south-eastern part of the Korean Peninsular including Busan, Ulsan, and Changwon cities. Because densely populated cities are concentrated in this region, air pollutants emitted from one of these cities tend to be impacted on the air quality of other cities. In order to clarify the seasonal movement pattern of emitted particles, several numerical simulations using WRF/FLEXPART were carried out. Four cases were selected for each season. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) reproduced atmospheric flow fields with nested grids. The seasonal pattern of air mass of study area was determined by backward and forward trajectories. As a result, the air parcel moves from northwest to southeast due to northwesterly winds in spring and winter. Also air parcel transports from south to north in summer, and moves from west to east. Because the air mass moves differently in each season, these characteristics should be considered when performing air quality analysis.
In order to clarify the impact of emissions reductions on the air quality over Metropolitan area of Korean Peninsula, several numerical experiment and analysis of integrated process rate(IPR) of ozone were carried out. Numerical models used in this study are WRF for the estimate the meteorological elements and CMAQ for assessment of ozone concentration.
As result in the sensitive test of VOC/NOx reduction experiments, although VOC reduction tends to induce the different impact on the advection and photochemical reaction rate of ozone in urban area and rural area, the mechanism of ozone appeared to be more sensitive to the reduction of VOC than that of NOx over the metropolitan and its surround area. So the control of VOC emission inventories is an effective means to decrease the ozone concentrations around this area.

The influence of plasma discharge on the nutrient components (NO3-N, NH4-N, PO4-P, K, Ca, and Mg) and water quality [pH, ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) and electric conductivity] of hydroponic water were investigated. It was observed that the NH4-N, PO4-P, K, Ca, and Mg were kept at the constant concentrations for plasma discharging of 90 min. On the other hand, NO3-N concentration was increased with proceeding of the plasma discharge. The increase of NO3-N concentration was considered with the fact that nitric acid was created from nitrogen among supplying air for the insulation of inside of dielectric barrier. ORP and electric conductivity was increased with plasma discharging time. However, pH was decrease with what because of the generation of the nitric acid. When adjusting the hydroponic ingredients, pH and conductivity must to be considered because of the change of pH and conductivitiy with the discharging.
We investigated usefulness of chicken feather as bioadsorbent for removal of hexavalent chromium[Cr(Ⅵ)] and oil from aqueous solution. Chicken feather was chemically treated with DTPA, EDTA, NaOH and SDS, respectively. Among them, EDTA was the most effective in adsorbing Cr(Ⅵ). Cr(Ⅵ) uptake by chicken feather was increased with decreasing pH; the highest Cr(Ⅵ) uptake was observed at pH 2.0. By increasing Cr(Ⅵ) concentration, Cr(Ⅵ) uptake was increased, and maximum Cr(Ⅵ) uptake was 0.34 mmol/g. Cr(Ⅵ) adsorption by chicken feather was well described by Freundlich isotherm than Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich constant(1/n) was 0.476. As the concentration of chicken feather was increased, Cr (Ⅵ) removal efficiency was increased but Cr(Ⅵ) uptake was decreased. Most of Cr(Ⅵ) was adsorbed at early reaction stage(1 h) and adsorption equilibrium was established at 5 h. On the other hand, chicken feather adsorbed effectively oils including bunker-A and bunker-C. In conclusion, our results suggest that chicken feather waste could be used to remove heavy metal and oil; it is a potential candidate for biosorption material.
Recent research has demonstrated that treating poultry litter with alum (aluminum sulfate) and aluminum chloride can remove environmental threats (ammonia, soluble phosphorus and odor) posed by litter. However, scientific information available on heavy metal in poultry litter with liquid aluminum chloride is still lacked. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of applying liquid aluminum chloride to rice hulls on heavy metals and to provide basic information to producers. Six hundred 0-d-old broiler were assigned to 4 treatments (control, 100 g, 200 g and 300 g of liquid AlCl3/kg of rice hulls, respectively) with 3 replicates of 50 birds. The experimental period lasted for 6 weeks. Liquid AlCl3 was sprayed on the rice hulls surface using a small hand pump. Total Al contents increased (P<0.05) with the increasing levels of liquid AlCl3 levels over time in comparison with control groups. Total Cu and Pb were lowered in all liquid AlCl3 treatments compared with the controls during 6 weeks. Significant differences in all treatments were found for total Cu contents at 2, 3 and 5 weeks and total Pb at 0, 1, 2 and 3 weeks. Total Zn contents decreased with time when compared with controls. However, no significant differences in total Zn contents were observed among all treatments. In light of environmental managements, spraying liquid AlCl3 to rice hulls indicated the significant advantages in reducing heavy metals as well as improving poultry industrial competitiveness.
For the cost-effective biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process whose characteristics of influent have low COD/N ratios, the automatic control system for the addition of external carbon based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) data in an anoxic reactor has been developed. In this study, it was carried out with a pilot-scale Bardenpho process which was consisted of anoxic 1, aerobic 1, aerobic 2, anoxic 2, aerobic 3 tank and clarifier. Firstly, the correlation coefficient (R2) of the dosage of external carbon source and ORP value was about 0.97. Consequently, the automatic control system using ORP showed that the dosage of external carbon source was decreased by about 20% compared with a stable dosage of 75 mg/L based on the COD/N ratio of the anoxic influent.
