The purpose of this study is to grasp what characterizes the vegetation base of the natural forest as a latent vegetation in the middle region of Korea and thus to offer basic data when improving the vegetation base in the middle region being built or to be built in the future. The findings of this soil section survey show the following: The soil is brown to red color soil group on the whole. In addition, the soil’s physical features like soil hardness are rated as high level, which results from the fact that the forest soil exits in its natural form under less influence of stamping. The pH of soil shows a weak acidity, like Korean normal soil. Specific electrical conductance is also rated as middle to high level in accordance with the standards of landscape architecture. The Salix koreensis community and the Pinus rigida community are different from other communities in terms of total nitrogen, available phosphate and exchangeable K+ content. Specifically, the two communities are opposed to each other in terms of total nitrogen and available phosphate, while being similar to each other in terms of available phosphate and exchangeable K+ content. This seems to result from the fact that they are located near each other. In addition, the two communities are characterized by the fact that they are distributed at the altitude mean relatively lowest and in the valley. To sum up, the forest soil around Goesan Gun is of middle level on the whole according to the landscape standards, when judging it in terms of vegetation base. Accordingly, it seems that the construction of the vegetation base around Goesan Gun will not require large investment expenses for soil improvement. Also, it seems that the spatial scope of research is needed to expand the basic data on the construction of the vegetation base for the whole middle region of Korea.

This research was made to investigate the effects of burned, which is made in the early spring every year at Saebyeol-Oreum from 2003 to 2009, on changes in vegetation on the grassland. The results of analyzing the characteristics of the lay of the land showed that the proportion of the surface land that had the angle of azimuth and the angle of slope in the range of southeast 135°~180° accounting for 73.89% and 21°~30° accounting 58.33% of the entire surface land, respectively, was found to be highest. The results of the analysis showed that the relative importance value was found to be lowered from 27.07 in 2003 to 19.47 in 2009, and this can be attributable to the relative importance value of Artemisia japonica having been heightened from 7.07 in 2003 to 16.23 in 2009. The reason that the relative importance value of Artemisia japonica was found to be high is thought to be that vegetation on the surface land was removed by burned in the early spring and, due to this, the dry surface of soil and the high slope accelerated the soil erosion and could not provide proper environment of the growth and development for Imperata cylindrical and Miscanthus sinensis, so Imperata cylindrical and Miscanthus sinensis were excluded and Artemisia japonica whose importance value had been highest have flourished. Researches to maintain the current vegetation on the burned location of Saebyeol-Oreum and to adjust physical characteristics of soil to restore vegetation and the proper time and cycle of burned should be conducted.

The environmental behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) systems, surfactant plays a critical role in remediation. In this study, sorptive behaviors and partitioning of naphthalene in soils in the presence of surfactants were investigated. Silica and kaolin with low organic carbon contents and a natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content were used as model sorbents. A nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, was used to enhance dissolution of naphthalene. Sorption kinetics of naphthalene onto silica, kaolin and natural soil were investigated and analyzed using several kinetic models. The two compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM) was fitted better than the other models. From the results of TCFOKM, the fast sorption coefficient of naphthalene (k1) was in the order of silica > kaolin > natural soil, whereas the slow sorbing fraction (k2) was in the reverse order. Sorption isotherms of naphthalene were linear with organic carbon content (foc) in soils, while those of Triton X-100 were nonlinear and correlated with CEC and BET surface area. Sorption of Triton X-100 was higher than that of naphthalene in all soils. The effectiveness of a SER system depends on the distribution coefficient (KD) of naphthalene between mobile and immobile phases. In surfactant-sorbed soils, naphthalene was adsorbed onto the soil surface and also partitioned onto the sorbed surfactant. The partition coefficient (KD) of naphthalene increased with surfactant concentration. However, the KD decreased as the surfactant concentration increased above CMC in all soils. This indicates that naphthalene was partitioned competitively onto both sorbed surfactants (immobile phase) and micelles (mobile phase). For the mineral soils such as silica and kaolin, naphthalene removal by mobile phase would be better than that by immobile phase because the distribution of naphthalene onto the micelles (Kmic) increased with the nonionic surfactant concentration (Triton X-100). For the natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content, however, the naphthalene removal by immobile phase would be better than that by mobile phase, because a high amount of Triton X-100 could be sorbed onto the natural soil and the sorbed surfactant also could sorb the relatively higher amount of naphthalene.

This study is mainly focused on micellar effect of cetylpyridinium chloride(CPyCl) solution including alkylbenzimidazole( R-BI) on dephosphorylation of diphenyl-4-nitrophenylphosphinate(DPNPIN) in carbonate buffer(pH 10.7). The reactions of DPNPIN with R-BI⊖ are strongly catalyzed by the micelles of CPyCl. Dephosphorylation of DPNPIN is accelerated by BI⊖ ion in 10 -2 M carbonate buffer(pH 10.7) of 4×10 -3 M CPyCl solution up to 100 times as compared with the reaction in carbonate buffer by no BI solution of 4×10 -3 M CPyCl. The value of pseudo first order rate constant(k m BI) of the reaction in CPyCl solution reached a maximum rate constant increasing micelle concentration. Such rate maxima are typical of micellar catalyzed bimolecular reactions. The reaction mediated by R-BI⊖ in micellar solutions are obviously slower than those by BI⊖, and the reaction rate were decreased with increase of lengths of alkyl groups. It seems due to steric effect of alkyl groups of R-BI⊖ in Stern layer of micellar solution. The surfactant reagent, cetylpyridinium chloride(CPyCl) , strongly catalyzes the reaction of diphenyl-4-nitrophenylphosphinate(DPNPIN) with alkylbenzimidazole (R-BI) and its anion(R-BI⊖) in carbonate buffer(pH 10.7). For example, 4×10 -3 M CPyCl in 1×10 -4 M BI solution increase the rate constant (kψ=1.0×10 -2 sec -1 ) of the dephosphorylation by a factor ca.14, when compared with reaction (kψ=7.3×10 -4 sec -1 ) in 1×10 -4 M BI solution(without CPyCl). And no CPyCl solution, in 1×10 -4 M BI solution increase the rate constant (kψ=7.3×10 -4 sec -1 ) of the dephosphorylation by a factor ca.36, when compared with reaction (kψ=2.0×10 -5 sec -1 ) in water solution(without BI). This predicts that the reactivities of R-BI⊖ in the micellar pseudophase are much smaller than that of BI⊖ . Due to the hydrophobicity and steric effect of alkyl group substituents, these groups would penetrate into the core of the micelle for stabilization by van der Waals interaction with long alkyl groups of CPyCl.

The generation of TiO2 nanoparticles by a thermal decomposition of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) was carried out experimentally using a tubular electric furnace at various synthesis temperatures (700, 900, 1100 and 1300℃) and precursor heating temperatures (80, 95 and 110℃). Effects of degree of crystallinity, surface area and anatase mass fraction of those TiO2 nanoparticles on photocatalytic properties such as decomposition of methylene blue was investigated. Results show that the primary particle diameter obtained from thermal decomposition of TTIP was considerably smaller than the commercial photocatalyst (Degussa, P25). Also, those specific surface areas were more than 134.4 m2/g. Resultant TiO2 nanoparticles showed improved photocatalytic activity compared with Deggusa P25. This is contributed to the higher degree of crystallinity, surface area and anatase mass fraction of TiO2 nanoparticles compared with P25.

This study attempted to facilitate various groundcover plants, related to phytoremediation material, and advance shade plants with a heavy metal tolerance to contaminated soil in an urban shade space. Saxifraga stolonifera, which has commonly been used a landscape shade plants, was evaluated to determine its heavy metal tolerance to different concentrations(Control, 100mg․kg-1, 250mg․kg-1and 500mg․kg-1 treatment) of Cd, Pb and Zn in soil. The growth of Saxifraga stolonifera showed no significant tendency after the initial transplantation, but showed distinct changes with the respective treatment heavy metal types and concentrations over time. Especially, severe chlorosis, with more yellowish green leaves, was observed, with inhibition at Cd concentrations greater than 100mg․kg-1. Conversely, no external symptoms or growth retardation were observed with Pb and Zn concentrations less than 500mg․kg-1. Therefore, Saxifraga stolonifera can be applied as a long term phytoremediation species in soil contaminated with low concentrations of heavy metal in urban shade spaces.

This study were to simulate major criteria air pollutants and estimate regional source-receptor relationship using air quality prediction model (TAPM ; The Air Pollution Model) in the Seoul Metropolitan area. Source-receptor relationship was estimated by contribution of each region to other regions and region itself through dividing the Seoul metropolitan area into five regions. According to administrative boundary, region Ⅰ and region Ⅱ were Seoul and Incheon in order. Gyeonggi was divided into three regions by directions like southern(region Ⅲ), northern(Ⅳ) and eastern(Ⅴ) area. Gridded emissions (1km×1km) by Clean Air Pollicy Support System (CAPSS) of National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) was prepared for TAPM simulation. The operational weather prediction system, Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS) operated by the Korean Meteorology Administration (KMA) was used for the regional weather forecasting with 30km grid resolution. Modeling period was 5 continuous days for each season with non-precipitation . The results showed that region Ⅰ was the most air-polluted area and it was 3~4 times more polluted region than other regions for NO2, SO2 and PM10. Contributions of SO2 NO2 and PM10 to region Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ were more than 50 percent for their own sources. However region Ⅳ and Ⅴ were mostly affected by sources of region Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ. When emissions of all regions were assumed to reduce 10 and 20 percent separately, air pollution of each region was reduced linearly and the contributions of reduction scenario were similar to those of base case. As input emissions were reduced according to different ratio - region Ⅰ 40 percent, region Ⅱ and Ⅲ 20 percent, region Ⅳ and Ⅴ 10 percent, air pollutions of region Ⅰ and Ⅲ were decreased remarkably. The contributions to regionⅠ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ were also reduced for their own sources. However, region Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ affected more regions Ⅳ and Ⅴ. Shortly, graded reduction of emission could be more effective to control air pollution in emission imbalanced area.

We investigated the temporal variations of heterotrophic dinoflagellates (hereafter HDNF) and photosynthetic dinoflagellates (hereafter PDNF) from 14 June to 4 September 2003 at a single station in Jangmok Bay. We took water samples 47 times from 2 depths (surface and bottom layers) at hide tide. A total of 63 species were encountered and in general the most abundant genera were Prorocentrum and Protoperidinium. The abundance of PDNF and HDNF was in the range of 0.04~55.8x10 4 cells/L and in the range of 0.01~4.35x10 4 cells/L, respectively. The mean abundance of PDNF was approximately 7 times higher than that of HDNF, and was higher in the surface layer where has enough irradiance for photosynthesis than in the bottom layer. The total dinoflagellate abundance was higher in the NLP (nitrogen limitation period) than in the SLP (silicate limitation period), and the abundance in the hypoxic conditions was similar to that in the normal conditions. The Shannon-Weaver species diversity index were slightly higher in the bottom layer, the SLP and the hypoxic conditions. The PDNF abundance were correlated with temperature, DO, total inorganic nitrogen and phosphate in the whole water column, and the HDNF abundance was significantly correlated with temperature, salinity and DO. This study shows that the dinoflagellate abundance might be affected by abiotic factors such as irradiance, temperature, salinity, DO and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients, and provides baseline information for further studies on plankton dynamics in Jangmok Bay.

Rapid industrialization has brought Nam-Hae area serious environmental problems associated with released oil and other hydrocarbons. In this work, in order to enhance the quality of the shoreline sediment we made enviro-chemical analyses of its substances, TPHs and microbial growth after treating with oxygen releasing compound(ORC) such as MgO2. Total organic compound(TOC) was reduced from 33.45% to 25.1∼31.08% meanwhile COD decreased from 27.5∼28.9mg/g·dry to 19.9∼26.1mg/g·dry for input of 2∼10% MgO2 in 20days. For 10% MgO2 input, TP and TN were reduced by 13.3% and 18.8%, respectively. Most of all TPH was decomposed by max. 42.4% in 21days, and the total viable count of microbes was found to be exponentially increased by 75.9%.

Emission rate of monoterpene and isoprene was measured in five commonly growing tree species of conifers(Pinus thunbergii, Abies koreana, Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus densiflora, Chamaecyparis obtusa) at the Halla mountain sites. Dynamic flow enclosure technique was used and gas samples were collected into Tenax tube. The highest and lowest hourly emission rate was observed in Abies koreana (1.86 ㎍/gdw/hr) and Chamaecyparis obtusa (0.52 ㎍/gdw/hr), respectively. The major species of monoterpene from pine trees were α-pinene, β-pinene, β-phellandrene, myrcene. Particularly, d-limonene was abundant in Abies koreana but α-pinene, d 3 -carene and sabinene was in Cryptomeria japonica. Emission rates of isoprene show less significant than those of monoterpene. And also seasonal emission rates of monoterpene were dependent on environmental factors such as temperature.

Differently from fly ash, the bottom ash produced from incinerated urban solid waste has been treated as an industrial waste matter, and almost reclaimed a tract form the sea. If this waste material is applicable to foam concrete as an fine aggregate, however, it may be worthy of environmental preservation by recycling of waste material as well as reducing self-weight of high-rising structure and long-span bridge. This research has an objective of evaluating the effects of application of bottom ash on the mechanical properties of foam concrete. Thus, the ratio of bottom ash to cement was selected as a variable for experiment and the effect was tested by compression strength, flexural strength, absorption ratio, density, expansion factor. It can be observed from experiments that the application ratios have different effects on the material parameters considered in this experiment, thus major relationship between application ratio and each material parameter were finally introduced. The result of this study can be applied to decide a optimal mix design proportion of foam light-weight concrete while bottom ash is used as an fine aggregate of the concrete.

The objectives of this research are to evaluate and compare the oxygen transfer coefficients(KLa) in both a general bubbles reactor and a micro-nano bubbles reactor for effective operation in sewage treatment plants, and to understand the effect on microbial kinetic parameters of biomass growth for optimal biological treatment in sewage treatment plants when the micro-nano bubbles reactor is applied. Oxygen transfer coefficients(KLa) of tap water and effluent of primary clarifier were determined. The oxygen transfer coefficients of the tap water for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were found to be 0.28 hr -1 and 2.50 hr -1 , respectively. The oxygen transfer coefficients of the effluent of the primary clarifier for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were found be to 0.15 hr -1 and 0.91 hr -1 , respectively. In order to figure out kinetic parameters of biomass growth for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor, oxygen uptake rates(OURs) in the saturated effluent of the primary clarifier were measured with the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor. The OURs of in the saturated effluent of the primary clarifier with the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were 0.0294 mg O2/L․hr and 0.0465 mg O2/L․hr, respectively. The higher micro-nano bubbles reactor's oxygen transfer coefficient increases the OURs. In addition, the maximum readily biodegradable substrate utilization rates(Kms) for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were 3.41 mg COD utilized/mg active VSS․day and 7.07 mg COD utilized/mg active VSS․day, respectively. The maximum specific biomass growth rates for heterotrophic biomass(μmax) were calculated by both values of yield for heterotrophic biomass(YH) and the maximum readily biodegradable substrate utilization rates(Kms). The values of μmax for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were 1.62 day -1 and 3.36 day -1 , respectively. The reported results show that the micro-nano bubbles reactor increased air-liquid contact area. This method could remove dissolved organic matters and nutrients efficiently and effectively.

Today, the importance of environmental education is a matter we are all concerned about. The environment surrounding us, such as the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil plants grow in, is critical for our survival. Currently there is a lot of interest in environmental education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. This is a result of the deep recognition of the importance of the environment. However the environmental education being conducted in schools is not yet at a satisfactory level. The practical issues, including an entrance exam-oriented atmosphere, student' and parents' lack of understanding, and teachers' lack of expertise in environmental education, interfere with the stability of environmental curriculum in the schools. Accordingly, we need to devise an alternative environmental curriculum due to the fact that it hasn't been included as a regular subject in the curriculum of many national schools. This study, carried out from April to December 2009, was an examination of the effect of volunteer work at the place of ecology experience on the environmental sensitivity & state-trait anxiety of the 61 Gifted Students. The students were divided into two groups. The test group consisted of 30 gifted students who did volunteer work at the place of ecology experience run by Ulsan Science High School, in Ulsan Metropolitan City. The control group consisted of the rest of the students. The following are the study results: First, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience was influential in increasing the environmental sensitivity of the gifted students. Second, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience was influential in decreasing the state anxiety of in gifted students. Third, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience was influential in decreasing the trait anxiety of in gifted students. Fourth, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience positively influenced not only the gifted students' view of environmental education, but also their overall character.
