Oral-derived bioresources(ODBs) for human-derived material research have been mainly sampled by individual researchers. Difficulties in ODB secure has impeded advances in dental research and associated industries. ODBs have been obtained in a few biobanks within general hospitals, yet the amount of oral-derived specimens is relatively low compared to other organs and lacked practical clinical data. Recently, biobanks of dental hospitals have started systematic management in South Korea, thus these biobanks are expected to invigorate high-quality ODB banking in the field. In this review, we will discuss the collection and utilization of OBDs, such as teeth, dental plaque, gingival crevicular fluid and saliva, and the need of dental hospital-based biobanks.

Salivary gland adenocarcinoma(AdCa NOS) is one of the major causes of mortality among malignant salivary gland tumors. New therapeutic measure are needed to improve the outcome for patients with AdCa NOS because current therapy does not significantly improve survival rates. Transglutaminase 2(TGase 2) was implicated in forming cross-linked protein polymer, apoptosis and matrix interaction. And also TGase 2 expression is up-regulated in proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells. shRNA which has emerged as an effective method to target specific genes for silencing has provided new opportunities for cancer therapy. But there has been rarely reported using shRNA-TGase 2 transfection in AdCa NOS. The purpose of this study were to examine the specific inhibition of TGase 2 mRNA and protein expression by siRNA transfection of TGase 2 through RT-PCR and immunoslot blotting, and to study proliferation, migration and invasion assay of SGT cell line from AdCa NOS. Cell cycle analysis showed that the downregulation of shRNA-TGase 2 caused the accumulation of cells in the sub-G0/G1 phase. In migration assay, suppressing shRNA-TGase 2 inhibited the capacity of the cells to migrate compared to parental cells. In invasion assay, cells transfected with shRNA-TGase 2 decreased in invasion when compared to SGT and vector transfected cells. shRNA-TGase 2 expressing plasmids efficiently downregulated TGase 2 mRNA and TGase 2 protein expression. It suggested that the shRNA-TGase 2 targeting system against TGase 2 could have a therapeutic potentiality for malignant salivary gland tumors, especially in inhibiting and/or preventing cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion.

Artificial intelligence, has been applied in interpreting osteoporosis on dental panoramic radiograph with high accuracy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the sensitive area of convolutional neural network(CNN), one of artificial intelligence, in interpreting osteoporosis on dental panoramic radiograph. Dental panoramic radiographs taken from 1,170 female (49.19 ±21.91 average age, 21 minimum age, and 84 maximum age) were selected for this study. Two oral maxillofacial radiologists agreed upon interpreting osteoporosis by interpreting mandibular inferior cortical changes. The region of interest included upper and lower jaws for training and testing CNN in interpreting osteoporosis. A filter which was set to look for image characteristics moved through the entire panoramic radiography to identify sensitive areas that distinguish normal groups and osteoporosis patients. In interpreting osteoporosis on panoramic radiograph, CNN responded sensitively at the cancellous bone of the upper and lower jaws while oral maxillofacial radiologists interpreted mandibular inferior cortical change.

Worldwide, oral cancer accounts for 2%–4% of all cancer cases. It is estimated that more of 90% of all oral neoplasms are oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The aims of this study were to evaluate follow-up outcomes in patients with OSCC invading the mandibular body bone who underwent primary radical resection and reconstructive surgery by fibular free flap or CAD-CAM T-mesh with pathological study on two cases. In this article, two cases of mandibular reconstruction in patients with OSCC invading the mandibular body bone are reported. A 68-year-old male patient visited the authors’ clinic with pain on the left mandibular region. After wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy on the mandibular OSCC, a enterocutaneous fibular free flap from right leg was used to cover the intraoral mucosal defect. The other 51-year-old female patient visited the authors’ clinic with pain on the right mandibular region. After wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy on the mandibular OSCC, reconstruction was done with a reconstruction plate and a fibula free flap from right leg. Unfortunately, fibular free flap was lost due to infection of the flap at post-operative 1month, secondary reconstruction using a custom-made type T-mesh and iliac PCBM was done to repair on the mandibular defect after four years postoperatively. The customized CAD-CAM T-mesh was made prior to the operation according to mirror image of remained jaw. Patients with OSCC invading the mandibular body bone are required an accurate segmental mandibulectomy immediate reconstructive surgery with various methods and followed by adjuvant radiation with or without chemotherapy in order to improve the quality of life through the restoration of the oral function and esthetics after surgery. Postoperative CCRT was determined according to the final pathologic findings such as lymph node metastasis and main lesion free margin safety, and this has an essential relationship in the prognosis of postoperative recurrence.
